Kylie Skin Review: Everything Worth It From Kylie Jenner's Skin Care Line

We toss around the phrase “break the internet” a lot, but there are few people who truly manage to. The Kardashian-Jenners always do, particularly Kylie. In 2015, she did just that with the launch of her makeup line Kylie Lip Kits (now Kylie Cosmetics). Her signature lip kits sold out in mere seconds, with resellers on eBay charging up to $3,000 for certain shades. Four years and a billion dollars later, Kylie Cosmetics is an empire in its own right, and has branched out into nearly every color cosmetic category.

Now, she’s venturing into skin care, another savvy business move, given that the category is quickly outpacing makeup sales. Fans caught on that she might have skin care in the works back in October, and the formal announcement—and separate Instagram page—came earlier this month.

What’s most notable (besides the very Glossier-esque baby pink packaging) is the price—nothing costs more than $30, which isn’t too surprising since her fan base skews younger. The same can be said for the products themselves. While nothing in it is going to be a potent gamechanger for someone with serious concerns (think acne, discoloration, or wrinkles), Kylie makes good on the basics. The line’s got two different types of face washes: a foaming cleanser and a walnut scrub (which was met with some skepticism on social media when Jenner announced it). There’s also a vanilla-scented toner, an eye cream, a vitamin C serum, and a moisturizer. Or you can get everything in a bundle for $125.

Diehards no doubt will drop the cash for the full line, but for the rest who are curious if Kylie Skin stacks up to her makeup, we recruited Glamour editors to give the products an initial test run ahead of the May 22 launch. Here are our first impressions.

After Wax Care – 10 Things You Should Never Do After a Bikini Wax

If you choose to get a bikini wax, by now you probably have an idea of what to expect during the process. Thank god we live in a time where we can swap waxing horror stories with our friends, so we all know what we’re getting ourselves into. But what about what happens after? While most of us know how to prep, no one really talks about how to ease any lingering pain or extend the life of your freshly-waxed bikini line. We went out to experts for the the best after wax care tips, and what not to do the first two days following your appointment.

1. Stay Out of the Sun

The first 48 hours after waxing, your already delicate skin down there is even more vulnerable. So while you may be dying to throw on your bikini the second you leave your wax, keep in mind that sensitive skin is more susceptible to UV rays. “This can lead to permanent sun damage and/or hyperpigmentation,” says esthetician Marta Grochowska of Haven Spa in NYC.

2. Avoid Swimming

This kind of goes hand in hand with the above, but it goes for indoor pools too—an especially large bodies of water (like an ocean, lake, or river) that could contain bacteria. “Avoid public water like swimming pools for a few days,” says dermatologist Kally Papantoniou, M.D., in New York City. If you don’t, you could have an increased risk of getting an infection, and no one wants that.

3. Be Careful Not to Over-Exfoliate

“Waxing removes the topmost layer of dead skin (along with the hair) so any kind of additional scrubbing can lead to skin damage,” says Grochowska. However, after the first few days, it’s important to remove dead skin cells with a light scrub or exfoliating serum to prevent ingrown hairs. (We love the Fur Silk Scrub).

4. Avoid the Sauna and Hot Yoga

“Steam opens your pores, which helps to push hair out,” warns Noemi Grupenmager, founder and CEO of Uni K Wax Center. Because it could cause premature stubble, “it might make you think the wax service wasn’t done correctly,” she says. Plus, bacteria likes warm, wet places, and you want to keep your fresh wax as clean as possible. For these reasons it’s worth it to take a break from hot yoga as well.

5. Wait a Little Before Getting a Spray Tan

“The chemicals may irritate your skin,” says Grochowska. Another reason to reschedule? “The color will look uneven between waxed and unwaxed areas.”

6. Be Selective With Your Skin Care

Stick with gentle, fragrance-free body products following for the first few days after your bikini wax. “Avoid any lotion, soap, or other toiletry items with artificial fragrance or color,” says Grochowska. “These ingredients are very irritating to freshly waxed skin.” Instead, wash up with something like Aveeno Skin Relief Fragrance-Free Body Wash, which is formulated specifically for irritated skin.

7. Take Showers Instead of Baths

“It’s better to take showers for the week after,” says Dr. Papantoniou. “Running water from the shower will be cleaner than sitting in bath water.” Why? See reason #2 again. It makes you more prone to infection.

8. Sorry, No Sexy Time

This one is a pretty standard rule most waxers will warn you about, but it’s easy to forget. Any kind of action down there—sex in particular—can lead to discomfort. “It can cause excessive chaffing from friction on extra-delicate skin,” says Grochowska. Consider turning the first two days into official cuddle time.

9. Opt for Loose Clothing

One thing to keep in mind both before you head into your appointment and after: Anything tight-fitting can rub raw spots and irritate, says Dr. Papantoniou. You’ll want to give your leggings a break for a few days and stick with maxi dresses, flowy pants, and breathable cotton fabrics.

“Fenty Skin” Was Officially Registered as a Trademark — Is Rihanna Launching Skin Care Soon?

Over the last two years, Fenty Beauty has brought us countless boundary-breaking launches—some of which sold out in mere hours—with the kind of inclusive marketing we’ve been waiting to see in the makeup space for years. Now, the powerhouse brand is getting ready to make its mark on the skin-care world, too, and we couldn’t be more excited.

Although details are limited, here’s what we know so far: Thanks to eagle eyes at Page Six, “Fenty Skin” was officially listed as a trademark on the United States Patent and Trademark Office’s website as of March 25, 2019 (i.e. less than a month ago). You might remember that there were rumors of a Fenty skin-care line coming in September of 2017 after a fan found items like creams, lotions, gels, and cleansers, registered under “House of Fenty.” But besides the brand’s best-selling Body Lava, we’ve yet to see other complexion-care products from Fenty.

Now, though, there are specific trademarks filed under the new “Fenty Skin” label, including “medicated and non-medicated skincare, soap, body care and personal care products (excluding color cosmetics, perfume and other fragrance-only products), and related accessories such as kits, tools and applicators.”

While right now it’s hard to imagine what a line of Fenty skin care would look like, something tells us it will be just as amazing and inclusive of skin types and tones — just as its makeup is. (Our girl Rihanna is behind it, after all.)

The “Fenty Skin” trademark application was just approved, albeit it still has to be viewed and signed by an attorney, a process that Page Six points out can take up to three months. In the meantime, it’s safe to say we’ll be storing away some of our precious pennies for when it does finally make its grand debut.

8 Genius Skin Care Tips That'll Give You Clearer Skin for Free

The best things in life really are free, even when it comes to your beauty routine. But taking care of your skin can be a big investment (hi, lasers and serums), so we’re always down for skin care tips that don’t take a huge bite out of our paychecks.

Which is what led us here: We’ve asked top skin care experts to give us their best advice. And the part we love the most? Not one thing below costs a single penny (assuming you already have most of these things in your kitchen).

Give Yourself a Face Massage

Alexa De Paulis

Got puffy eyes? No problem. Sure, you could stock up on eye cream…or you could use your fingers to give yourself an under-eye massage. “Use your ring fingers to press gently on the orbital bone, moving from the inner to outer corner of your eyes and repeating two to three times,” says celebrity facialist Cecilia Wong. “This will not only stimulate circulation, but it also helps minimize fine lines and reduce inflammation.”

Celebrity facialist and La Mer global skin care advisor [Georgia Louise] is also a huge proponent of massage all over your face to stimulate collagen and activate product. “Your hands are your most powerful weapon,” she says.

Chill Out

Literally. Louise loves her signature Facial Freeze Tools to depuff and sculpt your face, but if you’re looking for a budget option she loves this Old Hollywood trick: wash your face using ice water.

“I think it’s awesome to have a mega rinse with cool water if your skin is in need of refreshing,” she says. Not only does the chilly temperature make you feel more awake, it can quickly reduces puffiness, tighten pores, and calm inflammation.

Switch Your Pillowcase

We hate to add to laundry to your to-do list, but keeping your pillows clean is a top beauty secret. Pillowcases can hang on to dirt, oil, and bacteria from our faces, hair, and environment, and can become a breeding ground for acne. Try to swap out you pillow at least once a week to reduce the risk of a breakout.

Louise recommends a silk pillowcase to “really ensure your products are penetrating and won’t escape from your skin.” Sure, it’s money, but if you are looking to invest in a solid option, we’re huge fans of Slip’s Silk Pillowcases ($85), which not only helps ward off wrinkles (no creases in your pillow equals no long-term creases on your skin), but also make your hair shinier too.

Sleep on Your Back

Don’t worry. We’re not going to tell you to get eight hours of sleep, which is probably the oldest free skin care tip in the book. Because as essential as how much sleep you’re getting is the position in which you sleep. It really does matter. “After UV exposure, the second most common cause of wrinkles is squishing your face into a pillow at night,” says celebrity esthetician Renée Rouleau. “It’s like ironing wrinkles into your skin.” Sleeping on your back is ideal, since even pressing your cheek into a pillow can cause lines.

Put Some Salt on It

You’ve got two options here: You could ice a zit to help bring the inflammation down or even better (and maybe more comfortable): You could salt it. “Sea salt has powerful antibacterial properties and works to pull oil from the pore,” says Karen Young, founder of Oui Shave. She recommends combining one teaspoon of sea salt with enough water to form a paste. Dot this on the offending zit, let it dry for up to an hour (10 minutes for sensitive skin types) and then rinse it off.

How to Get 'Glass Skin' – I Tried the K-Beauty Skin Care Routine

In certain circles, where the difference between ampoules and essences needs no explanation and double cleansing is practically religion, “glass skin” is a term you’ll hear spoken in reverent terms. It’s a phrase that originated on the K-beauty scene and quickly went viral on social media and used to describe a complexion so luminous and poreless, it could be modeled from glass.

I’ve scrolled through plenty of pictures depicting the awe-inspiring results of a glass skin routine—and even once tried to fake it with a single highlighter-serum hybrid. The results of that experiment were successful, but my skin beneath the iridescent liquid was still my regular skin (in pretty good shape, but hardly mirrorlike).

When Peach and Lily founder, Alicia Yoon, recently asked me if I had tried a complete glass skin routine before, I saw my chance to finally attain the reflective cheekbones of my dreams. I’ve known Yoon for a long time, and let me tell you, the woman has no pores and always manages to look the exact right amount of dewy. If I were to have someone guide my foray into this radiant land, she was the ideal candidate.

There was just one caveat: somewhere during the past month, I had gotten complacent where beauty was concerned. My laziness crept up on me subversively, rearing its head only when I opened Yoon’s email and immediately gulped. The screen was crowded with lines and lines of meticulously detailed sentences that outlined the precise steps I should take starting from the moment I woke up.

She encouraged me to think of the process “as a meal plan—giving your skin the 360-degree care it needs to thrive: proper cleansing, exfoliating, balancing, antioxidants, humectants, vitamins, minerals, fatty acids, and protection!” My actual meal plan is about 75 percent croissants, and baguette-shaped blood cells flow through my veins, so we were perhaps on different pages about that one. Nevertheless, slathering my face in assorted creams and serums is literally my job, so I persevered.

While the experiment Yoon had me run through consists of 11 different products, she stresses that it’s not necessary to purchase that many things to duplicate the results. “It’s not so much about the number of steps, but what your skin needs to be at its absolutely healthiest,” she says. “Cleanse properly; either double cleanse or use a cleanser that can both dissolve makeup and remove water-based impurities. Balance your skin’s pH with a toner. And hydrate, hydrate, hydrate.”

Drenching your skin in moisture is the hallmark of this approach; it’s what gives your face that liquid highlighter (without actually using a drop of highlighter) glow. There are other things you should add too: sunscreen, exfoliants, and face masks. The most important thing, according to Yoon, is to keep everything gentle. “Don’t overdo it with too many acids or harsh actives,” she advises. “In the long run, your skin will get inflamed.” Check your ingredients labels. If you’re using products with vitamin C, be very careful about cocktailing them with high concentrations of AHAs, BHAs, or retinol.

I followed the routine below for a full week (Yoon estimates you need anywhere between one to three weeks to see “profound results”). However, I will prematurely reveal that I was already impressed after only seven days. So when you see the results below, imagine them given additional time. (You may have to sit down for that one.) My arsenal of topicals would have been completely overwhelming if not for the accompanying instructions, so I will now selflessly bequeath them to you.
