How to Shop for Bridal Lingerie That Feels Cool, Not Corny

Bridal lingerie can be broken down into two categories: what you wear underneath your wedding day look, and what you change into afterwards.

“Brides are either looking for solution pieces to go under the dress, or for gorgeous sets for the honeymoon and time thereafter,” explains Lyn Lewis, CEO of Journelle. The handful of delicates worn before the festivities begin—silk robes, chemises, camis, and so forth—also fall into this category. The way you shop for each of these, though, can be quite different: “As gowns have become less structured, what one wears [underneath] is often nude, very simple, and shaping,” says Emily Bendell, founder of Bluebella, differentiating that from the “beautiful, ivory, and lacy” pieces some change into afterwards. “I tell brides to separate out in their minds their dream wedding dress and their dream wedding lingerie,” she adds, since usually “one [isn’t] worn with the other.”

“Bridal lingerie customers are usually very traditional—people really want romance and softness,” Helena Stuart of Only Hearts tells Glamour. When it comes to shopping for those special pieces, she applies the same philosophy she uses for everyday undergarments: “Comfort first.” Plus, if you’re into the idea of bridal lingerie, she recommends buying pieces to be worn over a few days, for a very clever reason—”most brides think only of their wedding night, but often newlyweds are too wiped out to really enjoy it.”

This particular type of lingerie isn’t one that’s necessarily touched by trends. According to Stuart, it’s “still very classic and traditional”—though, you’ll see designer play with silhouettes and fabrics. (“What I’m enjoying right now is an interest in simpler shapes, cut from quality materials,” she adds.) But that’s part of what makes it special, argues Sandra Rose, Head of Merchandising, Planning, and Product Development at Journelle: “What makes bridal lingerie so fun is that it’s not always subject to the broader trends taking hold in the intimates world. It’s all about finding something special for the bride-to-be; something that makes her feel her most beautiful on her special day.”

There has been some innovation in bridal lingerie design: Lewis believes it’s “getting more modern—we used to see mostly feminine cuts and silhouettes, and there are still many great options options of this ilk, [but] now there are also lingerie pieces in bridal white that are modern or more whimsical.”

Customers are looking for alternatives, too. “I feel that people are moving away from traditional silk styles [and] are looking something more fresh, contemporary that suits today’s modern woman,” notes Ela Onour of Else. “The fabrics are lighter, more comfortable, and the styles enhance natural shapes rather than being padded and heavy.” She highlights the rise of longline silhouettes and bodysuits over the traditional strapless bra as an example. The latter in particular is a good option for someone who wants to stray from textbook notions about bridal lingerie, and go for something you can wear in a variety of scenarios—Heidi Zak of ThirdLove suggests “[wearing] it with a skirt for the rehearsal dinner” or “[packing] it for the honeymoon,” since it’s “equal parts lingerie and layer.”

And it might not be a bad idea to think beyond your wedding itinerary while you’re shopping for these special pieces—in fact, Bendell encourages brides to think beyond the ceremony and honeymoon because, “if you’re treating yourself to beautiful lingerie, choose something you can wear again—[something] romantic and beautiful that doesn’t only scream ‘bride’.”

Sarah Jessica Parker Partners With Gilt for Ready-to-Wear Bridal Collection

After her lavish wedding at the New York Public Library fell through, Carrie Bradshaw couldn’t help but wonder if a low-key, less traditional ceremony was a better fit for her and Mr. Big. Spoiler alert: It was, and Sarah Jessica Parker seems to have taken that revelation to heart with her latest collection.

This week the actress turned designer partnered with Gilt to release a ready-to-wear bridal collection, comprising 10 pieces perfect for the “modern, nontraditional bride,” according to a press release.

Parker’s wedding-ready line is designed to take brides from the bridal shower all the way through the reception, as well as get any bridesmaid or wedding guest ready for the occasion. Besides an assortment of classic dresses in varying cuts and lengths, the collection also includes tie-back and three-quarter-sleeve bodysuits, a halter-neck jumpsuit, and several skirts. Each piece comes in a range of colors—white, black, blush, blue, light gray, and poppy—and sizes (0–14 and XS–L). Prices range from $295 for the sleeveless, bow-back bodysuit to $2,395 for the full-length embroidered gown.

“Collaborating with Gilt on my first bridal ready-to-wear collection was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up,” Parker said in the release. “The team there is brilliant and allowed me to be imaginative and take risks as I was designing for the nontraditional bride. It has been quite fun to play around with colors, fabrics, and details to create unique pieces for all kinds of brides.”

In addition to the apparel, Gilt is releasing 15 existing styles from the SJP by Sarah Jessica Parker shoe line in an exclusive new selection of colors and heel heights, to pair with the bridal collection. The shoes, which include popular styles like the Cosette and the Fawn, are priced between $350 and $485 on the Gilt site.

There Were Plenty of Royal Wedding References at Spring 2019 Bridal Fashion Week

The countdown for the royal wedding is nearing its end, and the identity of the designer who will create Meghan Markle‘s wedding gown remains a case for the FBI. We know traditional style rules are not Markle’s thing—and regardless of what brand gets the ultimate honor, you can pretty much expect her dress to inspire plenty of bridal trends in the near future.

Even without any leads or sketches to work off of, designers at New York’s Bridal Fashion Week clearly had the royal wedding at the forefront of their collective consciousness: Regal details, dresses inspired by palaces, and a whole lot of tiaras made their way down the Spring 2019 runways in startling quantities. (Oh, and plenty of English Breakfast tea was on offer to guests.) So if you were following the shows and noticed a princess-like ballgown or a glittering crown on a model and thought to yourself: Hm, is this supposed to be a royal wedding reference? It may not have been laid out as explicitly in the show notes, but it wouldn’t be that much of a leap to make the connection.

Ahead, we revisit eight collections that subtly and not-so-subtly referenced the new People’s Princess—or the idea of a “royal wedding” more broadly—for Spring 2019 bridal.

7 2018 Wedding Dress and Bridal Trends for Spring 2019

With Fashion Month still clear in the rearview mirror, one would think that the biggest trends coming out of Bridal Fashion Week would mimic those seen on the ready-to-wear runways not too long ago. And yet, Spring 2019’s wedding gowns aren’t reinterpretations of the apparel motifs everyone was eyeing back in February. (Apologies to all the would-be Elle Woods: No magenta in sight this season.) Rather, they’re revisiting some of those timeless elements, like floral embroidery and capped sleeves, and making them feel of-the-moment—like the three-dimensional accents at Vera Wang and Victor & Rolf, or the floaty tulle shoulders at Anne Barge and Jenny Packham.

Ahead, get acquainted with the seven biggest bridal fashion trends for Spring 2019, whether you’re in the market for a wedding gown or not. (It never hurts to look…)

Bridal Fashion Week 2018: The Best Wedding Dresses and Gown

To the untrained eye, seeing one bridal collection can feel like seeing them all—yet, season after season, Bridal Fashion Week consistently proves that there are plenty of ways to innovate the traditional wedding gown.

The Spring 2019 collections, which debuted in April in New York, were a little more scaled back than last season’s, with fewer shows on the calendar and more intimate presentations (in lieu of full-blown runways). Still, the fresh takes on wedding wear aplenty. Creating a breathtaking bridal moment doesn’t necessarily equate to overzealous tulle: For many designers, beauty was found in streamlined simplicity—and with a royal wedding just weeks away, you can bet that some tipped their veils to the impending nuptials. And they gave us plenty to dream about with their latest collections,

From bridal legends like Vera Wang to up-and-comers like Alexandra Grecco, these 33 Spring 2019 wedding gowns are among the most gorgeous we’ve seen yet—and they’re certainly worth a year’s wait. Check out some of our favorites.

Kate Spade New York and Keds Made the Bridal Sneakers You'll Want to Wear on Your Wedding Day

Finding the perfect pair of shoes to wear on your wedding day might be the hardest part of planning the entire event. You have to consider comfort, your outfit, and how much time you’ll you’ll be spending on your feet… Thankfully, Kate Spade New York and Keds have your back—or, in this case, your soles—dreaming up the only type of footwear you’ll want to wear for the occasion: bridal sneakers.

As part of their ongoing collaboration, the two brands created brand-new collection of sneakers designed with weddings in mind. It features more than 30 different styles, so any bride looking for comfort and sophistication can find the perfect pair for her big day (or, you know, any day you want to wear glittery shoes—we won’t judge). The silhouettes range from triple-decker slides (if you want some height without a painful heel) to lace-ups (“something classic,” if you will). There are plenty of details, like pearls and floral appliqués, that let you match your footwear with your wedding theme or décor, should you be into that sort of thing.

“The Keds x Kate Spade New York wedding collection is the perfect union of ease and glamour for everything from the bridal shower to bridesmaids’ gifts to walking down the aisle to happily ever after,” the Keds website reads—so your entire wedding party, from your maid of honor to your ring bearer, can be decked out in the festive kicks.

Prices range from $40 for the baby sneakers and $55 for adult styles, and max out at $120 for a pearl-, flower-, or crystal-embellished slip-on pair—which, when you think about, feels like a true steal compared to some other more classic wedding-day pumps (and definitely a much better option than going barefoot or wearing socks all night when your feet start to ache). Who says that grooms are the only ones who can wear sneakers down the aisle?
