Music's Biggest Stars Brought Their Fashion A-Game to Grammys Weekend

While most eyes tend to be on the red carpet when it comes to finding the most jaw-dropping fashion moments during award season, it seems music’s biggest stars brought their A-game to the entire 2020 Grammys weekend.

Starting at Roc Nation’s THE BRUNCH on Saturday afternoon and continuing into Clive Davis’s annual pre-Grammys gala—which honored Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs this year—everyone from Rihanna to Priyanka Chopra to Dua Lipa wow’ed in unexpected, gorgeous, and memorable looks. Take, for instance, Beyoncé who had two perfect outfits this weekend. She first turned heads at Roc Nation’s event in a gray blazer-inspired dress by Italian designer Francesco Murano. For the evening, the singer swapped her mini dress for a red, floor-length silk gown by Valdrin Sahiti that featured a very high slit.

If this is what celebs had in store for us before the Grammys, we can’t wait to see what goes down on the red carpet.

The Biggest Celebrity Breakups of 2020

Twenty-nineteen saw several celebrity breakups that hit us hard. Michelle Williams and Phil Elverum ended their marriage. Lady Gaga and Christian Carino called off an engagement. Solange Knowles and Alan Ferguson split after five years. And Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth concluded a short marriage but very long relationship. There were also some quick, memorable romances that flamed out—among them Demi Lovato and Austin Wilson, Gigi Hadid and Tyler Cameron, and maybe the year’s biggest WTF couple, Kate Beckinsale and Pete Davidson.

Sadly, for anyone who believes in celebrity love, the hits keep coming in 2020. On January 14, a source confirmed that Vanessa Hudgens and Austin Butler have ended their relationship after almost nine years together. The news comes after fans noticed Butler was absent from Hudgens’s recent posts, including around the holidays. “Vanessa and Austin are officially broken up, and Vanessa has been telling those close to her about their breakup,” the source told Us Weekly.

More celebrity breakups will inevitably happen this year. Below, a list of the ones that were particularly difficult to accept.

Meghan Markle's Dog May Have Been the Biggest Clue They Were Stepping Down

While most of the world is still in shock over Meghan Markle and Prince Harry‘s decision to step down as senior members of the royal family, it turns out one of the Duchess’s dogs may have been a big hint the announcement was coming.

This week, Markle and Prince Harry announced they will opt out of some of their royal duties and plan to partially relocate to North America—most likely Canada—where they will work to become financially independent.

“After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution. We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen,” the couple wrote on Instagram.

This announcement came amidst the couple’s holiday in Canada, where per E! News, it was reported the two were spotted taking a hike with Suits star Abigail Spencer and two dogs.

Though it seemed like an innocent story at the time, this is where Markle’s pets come into play. One of the dogs on the hike was reportedly Guy, the beagle Markle adopted from a rescue shelter, and the other was identified as Bogart, the pup who could no longer travel because of his old age. (He was left behind in Canada with friends after she married Prince Harry as to not force him to make the long journey to the U.K.)

Now, this is where things get interesting. According to People, Guy suffered an injury following his arrival in the U.K. in 2017. He reportedly broke two of his legs at the time and Markle was “distraught” and “very upset” by what happened.

This begs the question: Why would Markle haven taken him on a 10-hour flight back to Canada just for a six-week vacation? For some, the answer is quite simple. Markle and Prince Harry were already in the process of making their move across the pond way before they announced it, so they were taking the necessary steps to relocate their dogs.

Royal correspondent Rebecca English told The Daily Mail that “insiders confirmed that the dogs staying in Canada ‘was the biggest clue, in hindsight, that they were unlikely to come back from this so-called holiday’.”

“Both the Duke and Duchess adore their dogs and Guy has already been relocated from Canada to London once when Meghan moved over,” the Daily Mail‘s source added. “She wouldn’t have considered a move again for him if it wasn’t going to be at least semi-permanent.”

As they said in their statement, the two intend to “balance [their] time between the United Kingdom and North America” where they plan to raise their son “with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter.”

It’s been reported that Markle is already back in Canada with baby Archie and her dogs. As for Prince Harry, he’ll reportedly join his wife and son in two weeks after he sorts everything out with his family in the U.K.

Meghan Markle Has Landed the Biggest Blow to the British Since George Washington

Earlier this week, Meghan Markle and her husband, Prince Harry, dealt the greatest blow to the British crown since George Washington. In fact, she has may have implemented an even better plan of attack than he did. Washington lost more battles than he won, costing Americans a great deal of time, money, and lives—and he waged his war of Independence on American soil. Meghan launched her surprise attack on British rule abroad without a single loss of life.

Frankly, I’m impressed, and I suspect Washington would be, too. He loved an inside job. As I learned writing my Washington biography, You Never Forget Your First, he made up for his losses on the battlefield by embracing espionage and winning in the court of public opinion.

It was frustrating to see the connection go unnoticed in the hours after the announcement, when those in search of historical echoes focused on Prince Harry and his great-great-uncle Edward VIII, who famously abdicated the throne in order to marry Wallis Simpson, another American divorcée. But those throne watchers would do well to remember that Harry now ranks sixth in the line of succession—much farther from the seat of power than Edward was. Plus, the royal family rejected Simpson in 1936. Some of them seem to have since learned their lesson, publicly embracing Meghan in 2017. Prince Harry might have been just another royal stifled under the weight of his family’s expectations. But Meghan? She’s a revolutionary for the modern age.

A mixed-race American actress, Meghan was an unlikely candidate to instigate this unprecedented break with the royal family, just as Washington was once a reluctant rebel. At first, both tried hard to make it work with the royal family under rather unfavorable conditions, hoping their loyalty and obedience would lead to greater compromise and parity.

The Duchess embraced her new country, and met many of its expectations. Meghan—who majored in theater and international relations at Northwestern—gave up her career, had a publicly televised wedding, and paraded her newborn baby in front of cameras when she probably wished she was still in her bathrobe. Perhaps in exchange she thought she could make a few stipulations of her own. But the Crown doesn’t bargain, and neither does the British press. They demand. “I never thought it would be easy,” Meghan said in the documentary Harry & Meghan: An African Journey, but I thought it would be fair.”

Back in the 1700s, so did Washington. As a young man raised in colonial Virginia, he fought for the British military and became their most famous colonist, but that didn’t mean he was paid as much as the British-born soldiers or given the same rank. And yet, he kept at it, believing that his superiors would surely see the error of their ways and recognize that colonists didn’t deserve to be second-class subjects. It never happened. Eventually, a case of dysentery took him to Alexandria, Virginia, and a great match was made; Washington traded in the military for a rich bride and tried to live a relatively quiet life, but the British continued to thwart him at every turn. They often gave him “privileges” like elected office, land, and the ability to farm it, only to take them away. For a while, he sent “humble and dutiful letters” to the Crown, but after a couple of decades, Washington was done waiting for his pleas to be heard. He lasted a lot longer than Meghan—but he wasn’t a black woman living in Britain.

When the time came, the Crown was not prepared for the Declaration of Independence. Over two centuries later, the insubordinance came as no less of a surprise—and this time via social media. In both instances, the impulse was to get a handle on the crisis. In 1776, the Royal Navy sailed into to British New York with hundreds of ships to swiftly quell a rebellion of subjects, not to fight a war against a sovereign nation with a general of their very own. Parliament even offered Washington a pardon for his insolence, but refused to call him by his military title. In 2020, Buckingham Palace didn’t even have to cross an ocean to issue a hastily crafted, infantilizing response to Wednesday’s Instagram announcement (which tasted a little undercooked itself): “Discussions with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are at an early stage. We understand their desire to take a different approach, but these are complicated issues that will take time to work through.”

Golden Globes 2020: The Biggest Moments

Awards season kicked off on Sunday night, January 5, with the 2020 Golden Globes. First up was Ricky Gervais, who returned as host for the first time since 2016 and made up for lost time with a rapid-fire round of insults and jokes. (He’s hosted the show five times in total.) There was some definite uncomfortable shifting throughout the crowd, but, all in all, it was just good fun.

But Gervais’s opening monologue was just the tip of the iceberg. This year’s Golden Globes was highly entertaining—from the presenters to the winners and the candid moments in between. If you missed the show, though, no worries: We’ve compiled the best (and cringe-iest) moments from the night, below.

Gervais’s opening monologue. It was, naturally, quite spicy, with several jokes that left the star-studded audience stunned. No topic was off-limits, including the college cheating scandal. “That must’ve been the most embarrassing thing that’s ever happened to her,” Gervais said of Felicity Huffman’s daughter. “And her dad [William H. Macy] was in Wild Hogs.” Gervais also made cracks about Leonardo DiCaprio’s dating past, quipping the actor brought a date to the premiere of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and, “by the end, [she] was too old for him.” (DiCaprio laughed at the joke, seemingly in good spirits.)

Phoebe Waller-Bridge winning Best Lead Actress in a Television Comedy for Fleabag. She thanked the sexy priest, played by Andrew Scott (bless up), and added, “This has been so, so extraordinary…This means the world to me. Thank you so much.”

Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon presenting together. Aniston made a subtle joke about their hit series The Morning Show, saying “Good morning” to the crowd instead of “evening.” (If you’re not watching the show, you’re hardcore missing out, my friends!) The duo presented an award to Russell Crowe, who wasn’t there to accept but instead delivered a message, which Aniston read aloud, about the wildfires in Australia.

The baby Yoda comparisons to Jodie Comer’s dress. I can’t un-see it.

And all the reactions to Jennifer Lopez’s dress. It was, by far, the most talked-about outfit of the night.
