The Biggest Celebrity Breakups of 2020

Twenty-nineteen saw several celebrity breakups that hit us hard. Michelle Williams and Phil Elverum ended their marriage. Lady Gaga and Christian Carino called off an engagement. Solange Knowles and Alan Ferguson split after five years. And Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth concluded a short marriage but very long relationship. There were also some quick, memorable romances that flamed out—among them Demi Lovato and Austin Wilson, Gigi Hadid and Tyler Cameron, and maybe the year’s biggest WTF couple, Kate Beckinsale and Pete Davidson.

Sadly, for anyone who believes in celebrity love, the hits keep coming in 2020. On January 14, a source confirmed that Vanessa Hudgens and Austin Butler have ended their relationship after almost nine years together. The news comes after fans noticed Butler was absent from Hudgens’s recent posts, including around the holidays. “Vanessa and Austin are officially broken up, and Vanessa has been telling those close to her about their breakup,” the source told Us Weekly.

More celebrity breakups will inevitably happen this year. Below, a list of the ones that were particularly difficult to accept.

The Biggest Celebrity Breakups of 2019

We’re only two months into 2019, but there have already been some pretty major celebrity breakups. On January 4, news reports came out that Gigi Hadid and Zayn Malik were taking a break after reconciling last April. “They could get back together, but it’s over for now,” an insider told Us Weekly. And just this week, there have been two breakups: Lady Gaga and Christian Carino, and Khloé Kardashian and Tristan Thompson.

If 2018 is any indication, this will be only the first of more Hollywood uncouplings to come. Last year alone saw the end of several relationships, including, Jenna Dewan and Channing Tatum, Chris Evans and Jenny Slate, Cardi B and Offset, and Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson.

Below, all the celebrity breakups from 2019 (so far). We’ll update this post as more happen.

The Biggest Celebrity Breakups in 2018

I’m fairly confident that everyone, deep down, is obsessed with at least one celebrity couple. Sure, some people might be too embarrassed to admit this out loud, but pop culture’s just too ubiquitous for you to not catch feels for an A-list pairing. Whether fictional (like “Bughead”) or real (like John Legend and Chrissy Teigen), we turn to celebrity couples—and their Twitter accounts—for escape and enjoyment. Listen, my day is just better after I see Blake Lively trolling her husband, Ryan Reynolds, on Instagram, and I won’t be judged for it!

But this connection also makes it really hard when your favorite celebrity couples break up. We don’t know these people, but if you’ve been following a famous couple on social media, it’s jarring if they break up. It’s a change, and no one likes change.

Fans certainly don’t like the fact these celebrity couples broke up this year. It’s like the end of an era, after all, and if 2017 is any indication, this list is going to keep growing.

Here are the most surprising celebrity couples who’ve called it quits in 2018. Pour one out for each of them (then go get another bottle of wine because you deserve it).

Bachelor in Paradise Season 5, Episode 10 Recap: These Breakups Are Hard to Watch

Caution: Spoilers ahead.

It’s a new day on Bachelor in Paradise, but that doesn’t mean the spell Shushanna cast is over. “So, are you a good witch or a bad witch?” Wells asks Shu first thing in the morning. “I’m a good witch,” she replies. All kidding aside, Shu thinks she just has “the look” of a witch, so that’s how the rumor spread. Even if that’s true, Shu, I don’t think burning Kamil’s photo in the fire helped.

In other news, Jordan and Jenna go on a date where they take “engagement photos.” Their purple-haired photographer seems nice enough, but I suspect he has some sort of vendetta against the double Js because the “final” photos we see on screen are so, so awkward. Jenna’s eyes are half-closed in one, Jordan makes a weird face in another…they’re all outtakes, basically. What did they do to piss him off? It must be bad because before shoot ends, he springs a surprise on Jenna: a wedding dress to wear in the last pics. Jenna isn’t into this—not because of the dress or the lame premise. No, she’s uncomfortable because her feelings for Jordan are real, and she wants to know if he feels the same way. When she confesses this to Jordan, he says all the right things and then they jump into the ocean. After all that, did the photographer even take any wedding dress pics? Unclear.

Anyway, they return to the villa from their date and a new arrival shows up soon after: Robby, who is met with crickets. The guys don’t want a new person competing for a rose, and the women don’t want a sentient Kewpie doll in their presence. Also, as Cassandra says, “Why is Robby Hayes here? Every single girl here knows his reputation; it’s not a good one.”

Everyone gossips about how he cheated on Amanda Stanton after last season of Bachelor in Paradise, but when Robby asks Shushanna out she says yes.

“I feel like Shushanna’s moved on from Kamil. She burned his photo in the fire.” – I forgot to write down who said this, but it’s gold nonetheless.

Shushanna knows people have “negative thoughts” about Robby—or, as Astrid puts it, “You can’t turn a fuckboy into a husband”—but she doesn’t “want to hear about it.” On their date, Shu tells Robby that everyone thinks she’s a witch. He brushes it off and jokes, “Put a spell on me hahaha,” and this is enough to win her over.

Back at the villa, Joe tries to have a serious conversation with Kendall about whether or not they’re on track to getting engaged. She avoids the conversation and ducks out before giving him a real answer. And the next day, she totally avoids him.

That night, ahead of the rose ceremony, there are three main dramas at play. First, there’s the love triangle between Olivia, Diggy, and John. Diggy pulled some strings (read: producers) to get the trumpeter from their first date to come perform for them. However, John steals her away in the middle of it to show her a sunflower field he (producers) made.

Cue an incredibly sad but hilarious montage of Diggy sitting alone with the trumpet player. And it turns out it was even worse than it looks:

The second drama of the night is the most short-lived: Olivia and Cassandra feel it’s their duty as Shu’s friends to warn her about Robby. They tell her he’s a serial cheater and his intentions here questionable, but Shu’s like, “I’m just not sure!” When she asks Robby directly if he’s ever cheated he just says, “Yes.” Somehow, Shu doesn’t seem bothered by this.

“I have been 100 percent honest…since I’ve been here.” -Robby

The main drama of the night is between Kendall and Joe. He’s upset that she’s avoiding a serious talk, but when they finally sit down Kendall admits she doesn’t know if she’s in love with him. Joe’s frustrated; he’s been falling for her this whole time, but it’s hard to express that when she’s said repeatedly she’s afraid of commitment because her past boyfriends “suffocated” her. Kendall thought they were on the same page, but Joe says that was her projecting. They break up and leave paradise in tears.

Their departure throws everyone off, but the rose ceremony must go on. The couples are: Cassandra and Jordan, Shushanna and Robby, Annaliese and Kamil, Astrid and Kevin, Krystal and Chris, Jenna and Jordan, and Olivia and John. This means Diggy is leaving paradise, but there’s always his trumpet player! Literally, the trumpet player is sitting in the back of the van with Diggy.

The next morning, Kevin spends an hour talking about the eight-egg omelet he ordered. You know Astrid loves him because she listens to the whole thing and says “Wow!” without any hint of sarcasm. But before he gets a chance to eat it, Chris Harrison shows up to reveal that nobody new will be entering paradise. Instead, the remaining couples have a few options: leave hand in hand, stay and go to the fantasy suite (and probably head toward an engagement), or say goodbye now.

With that, things start getting real. John tells Olivia that he likes her, but he doesn’t think they’re ready for the fantasy suite and all that comes with it yet. She agrees, and they decide to leave but continue “hanging out.” Cassandra and Jordan split, and it’s as awkward as their entire relationship. Robby breaks up with Shushanna by saying, “If I’m in Utah, we can grab dinner or something.”

Annaliese right away is like, “We should DEFINITELY do the fantasy suite!” Kamil, who seconds earlier was on the verge of breaking up with her, backtracks and says he’s in. Chris and Krystal, and Jenna and Jordan, also decide they’re ready for their individual fantasy suites.

The big surprise comes when Kevin and Astrid talk. He’s freaking out because the last two times he’s done the fantasy suite have been a disaster. (Kevin, why are you still signing up for this franchise? You know you can say no, right?) “There’s something missing with me,” he says through tears. “It’s like I’m at 80%.” It’s clear this is all about him and nothing to do with her—but it’s still hard on Astrid. She feels blindsided because, to her, she gave him so many opportunities to be open about how he was feeling. It’s a hard breakup to watch—probably because it’s one of the most realistic ones to happen on this show. Ultimately, they both leave alone.

As for the fantasy suites, they’re pretty uneventful unless you’ve been dying to watch Krystal rub a feather over Chris’ bare chest. (And if so, may I suggest therapy?) So with that, I’ll see you tomorrow for the season finale. Almost there!

Gay Breakups Are Better, and Here's Why

Recently a woman I was completely in love with dumped me. Normally I’d dive right into a routine of debasing her and emboldening my friends to call her a Demogorgon in wire-frame glasses. Except, unlike other exes, she wasn’t a Demogorgon. In fact, she was honorable in her actions; she let me go instead of leading me on. I actually res…resp…respec—sorry, I’m having trouble saying this—I respected her. So what now?

After the breakup she reached out a couple times, which I resisted ferociously. But since, I’ve warmed to the idea of being friends with my ex, and even suggest you do the same. It’s not my revolutionary idea: The LGBTQ community is known for its emphasis on tolerance, but one of our progressive dating phenomena is particularly worth praising and sharing. It’s quite common to become friends with exes. I’ve witnessed women introduce an ex to her new girlfriend like this: “This is Sasha. We hooked up for a month then realized we didn’t like each other like that,” or “This is Amanda. We f-cked in the bathroom of Moby’s small-plates restaurant, but it sucked.” Or the gem: “This is Annie. We dated for three years, but our shaman confirmed we had conflicting moon signs.” Why are gay people so good at this? Because we’re used to being judged and shamed for dating each other, staying friends is an act of solidarity; when you’re marginalized and have fewer safe spaces, keeping allies is a means of survival. We see an ex every time we go to a gay bar whether we like it or not. We can’t afford to get upset about it. We have bigger tofu to sauté.

But this behavior is often nothing short of alien to straight people. Imagine a woman at a party with her boyfriend, saying, “Kyle”—I assume his name is Kyle—“this is my friend Josh. We dated for two years in college, but now we’re just BFFs.” That would never happen! Kyle lives in a heterosexual world that breeds stereotypical gender roles and toxic masculinity. But if Kyle focused less on leg day and more on mending his insecurities, maybe he wouldn’t feel he has to compete with Josh. Conversely, she—let’s call her Kate—should feel free to be friends with Josh. She already invested years into nurturing a relationship with him. They even went to Cornell together! This analogy has gone off the rails, but here’s the thing: There are valid reasons to crave actual friendship with an ex. You liked each other at some point and have tons of shared experiences. You shouldn’t have to throw all that away, but most times we do. Why?

It could be because society incubates the idea that exes are our enemies, which is fully encouraged by pop culture revenge plots like Kill Bill and Carrie Underwood ruining her ex’s four-wheel drive. And culturally, we value monogamy so much that we fear being cordial with an ex might agitate our current partner, based on the faulty logic that says you’re more likely to cheat with a past S.O. than anyone else.

But somewhere out there an alternate reality exists, where we’re not stewing in resentment over our exes, unfriending them and their family members, or probing invitation lists to make sure we don’t end up at the same party. Imagine bumping into your ex at the grocery store while wearing a shirt you slept in, with some rogue pimple cream on your chin, and it doesn’t even faze you! You’re just like, “Sup, Kyle. I see you’re still a fan of egg salad.” Doesn’t that sound f-cking beautiful? That’s what the gay community does, that’s what I learned to do, and you can too.

As for my most recent ex? After some time apart, we started sending each other memes, which is 2018’s equivalent of waving a white flag. I’m finally ready to walk into a party with my new girlfriend, bump into my ex, and say, “This is Sally. We dated for four months. She’s my friend.”
