Meghan Markle Just Made Her First Appearance Since Stepping Down as a Senior Royal

Getty Images

(Prince) Harry has made some solo appearances since stepping down, but the Edeavour Awards marks his first photographed event with Markle. (The two reportedly attended a J.P. Morgan event in February, but that was never confirmed by the Sussexes.)

This is the first of several royal engagements Meghan Markle and (Prince) Harry will have while in London. The last one will be the annual Commonwealth Day next Monday, March 9, where they’ll join Queen Elizabeth II along with Prince Charles, Prince William, and Kate Middleton.

As you know by now, Markle and (Prince) Harry are splitting their time between North America and the U.K. after announcing in January they’d be stepping back from the royal family. “After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution. We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen,” they wrote on Instagram at the time.

The post continued, “It is with your encouragement, particularly over the last few years, that we feel prepared to make this adjustment. We now plan to balance our time between the United Kingdom and North America, continuing to honour our duty to The Queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages.”

We can’t wait to see what else comes from this mini royal engagement tour in London.

Here's How Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Are Reportedly Doing, Romantically, Since Stepping Down

If absence makes the heart grow fonder, it’s space from Kensington Palace that has brought Prince Harry and Meghan Markle closer together.

It seems like stepping back from their royal duties and moving to Canada with their son, Archie, was the right move. According to People, Prince Harry and Markle (who reportedly call each other “H” and “M”) are really feeling the benefits of time to themselves. “They are besotted and very sweet with each other,” a source told the publication.

“Archie is the priority. It’s very much still about taking care of him and putting the family first,” another allegedly close friend explained. “He’s a happy kid—he loves to laugh. Archie and Harry have such a good time together. And Meghan is a great mom. She’s very much about tending to him. They are trying to live their life as regular parents.”

As we know from another recent update about their life in Vancouver, the prince and Markle are very happy with their choice. “This decision [to leave] had been weighing on them for a long time, and they are relieved to have it done,” a friend told People earlier this February. “A weight has been lifted off their shoulders.”

They’re not the only ones who are benefiting from a royal hiatus. Prince William and Kate Middleton, who are supposedly closer than ever since all the royal drama, are also planning to take a break from their duties (though for a much shorter amount of time).

According to Us Weekly, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will have the end of February to themselves while Prince George and Princess Charlotte are on school vacation.

Nothing lasts forever, though, and both couples are soon to be reunited in London this March. Per Us Weekly, Queen Elizabeth II extended an invitation to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle and is hoping everyone will present a united front.

Who else wants to be a fly on the wall for that family dinner?

Meghan Markle Makes First Appearance Since Announcing She's Stepping Down as a Senior Royal

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s decision to “step back” as senior royals shocked the world over the last few days. But amid the whirlwind, the Duchess of Sussex made some time for an engagement. On Tuesday, January 14, she paid a visit to Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre. The organization shared that Markle had tea with members and discussed several issues affecting the community.

The Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre, which provides a safe space for women while creating social programs, advocacy, and support, shared the news with a photo of Markle smiling next to several women. “Look who we had tea with today! The Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, visited us today to discuss issues affecting women in the community,” the center wrote on Facebook.

Both Markle and Prince Harry have had a lot going on since issuing a statement that explained they hope to transition into new roles in the royal family and establish financial independence. On Monday, January 13, Prince Harry made his way back to London for a meeting convened with the Queen, in which they reportedly discussed details of what the new set-up might look like. That day, the Queen broke her silence on the situation. “My family and I are entirely supportive of Harry and Meghan’s desire to create a new life as a young family,” she said. “Although we would have preferred them to remain full-time working Members of the Royal Family, we respect and understand their wish to live a more independent life as a family while remaining a valued part of my family.”

She added that Markle and Prince Harry will split their time between Canada and the U.K., and it seems that engagements like visiting the Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre are all part of what the couple has envisioned in their new arrangement. They’ve said they want to keep working on the charities and public issues they’ve been championing, so Markle surely has more events like this in her future.

The Queen Just Broke Her Silence on Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Stepping Down

Queen Elizabeth II has broken her silence on Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s decision to step down as senior members of the royal family. It turns out the reports were true: The queen really did host a family meeting on Monday, January 13, to discuss the situation with Meghan and Harry. And shortly after, she released this lengthy statement to the public:

“Today my family had very constructive discussions on the future of my grandson and his family.

My family and I are entirely supportive of Harry and Meghan’s desire to create a new life as a young family. Although we would have preferred them to remain full-time working Members of the Royal Family, we respect and understand their wish to live a more independent life as a family while remaining a valued part of my family.

Harry and Meghan have made clear that they do not want to be reliant on public funds in their new lives.

It has therefore been agreed that there will be a period of transition in which the Sussexes will spend time in Canada and the U.K.

These are complex matters for my family to resolve, and there is some more work to be done, but I have asked for final decisions to be reached in the coming days.”

See the statement for yourself, below:

From this, it appears the queen is relatively on board with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s decision to step out on their own and become more financially independent. But it’s clear decisions and logistics still have to be hammered out.

In their original statement announcing this news, Markle and Prince Harry wrote, “After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution. We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen. It is with your encouragement, particularly over the last few years, that we feel prepared to make this adjustment. “

Meghan Markle's Dog May Have Been the Biggest Clue They Were Stepping Down

While most of the world is still in shock over Meghan Markle and Prince Harry‘s decision to step down as senior members of the royal family, it turns out one of the Duchess’s dogs may have been a big hint the announcement was coming.

This week, Markle and Prince Harry announced they will opt out of some of their royal duties and plan to partially relocate to North America—most likely Canada—where they will work to become financially independent.

“After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution. We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen,” the couple wrote on Instagram.

This announcement came amidst the couple’s holiday in Canada, where per E! News, it was reported the two were spotted taking a hike with Suits star Abigail Spencer and two dogs.

Though it seemed like an innocent story at the time, this is where Markle’s pets come into play. One of the dogs on the hike was reportedly Guy, the beagle Markle adopted from a rescue shelter, and the other was identified as Bogart, the pup who could no longer travel because of his old age. (He was left behind in Canada with friends after she married Prince Harry as to not force him to make the long journey to the U.K.)

Now, this is where things get interesting. According to People, Guy suffered an injury following his arrival in the U.K. in 2017. He reportedly broke two of his legs at the time and Markle was “distraught” and “very upset” by what happened.

This begs the question: Why would Markle haven taken him on a 10-hour flight back to Canada just for a six-week vacation? For some, the answer is quite simple. Markle and Prince Harry were already in the process of making their move across the pond way before they announced it, so they were taking the necessary steps to relocate their dogs.

Royal correspondent Rebecca English told The Daily Mail that “insiders confirmed that the dogs staying in Canada ‘was the biggest clue, in hindsight, that they were unlikely to come back from this so-called holiday’.”

“Both the Duke and Duchess adore their dogs and Guy has already been relocated from Canada to London once when Meghan moved over,” the Daily Mail‘s source added. “She wouldn’t have considered a move again for him if it wasn’t going to be at least semi-permanent.”

As they said in their statement, the two intend to “balance [their] time between the United Kingdom and North America” where they plan to raise their son “with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter.”

It’s been reported that Markle is already back in Canada with baby Archie and her dogs. As for Prince Harry, he’ll reportedly join his wife and son in two weeks after he sorts everything out with his family in the U.K.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Low-Key Hinted They Were Stepping Down Before Announcing It

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry sent shockwaves through the palace—and world—on Wednesday, January 8, when they announced they were stepping down as senior members of the royal family. “After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution. We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen,” the Duke and Duchess of Sussex posted to Instagram. Shortly after, Buckingham Palace released their own statement that suggested senior royals weren’t privy to Markle and Prince Harry’s announcement—or at least the rollout of it.

But as People magazine pointed out in an article on Friday, January 10, the Sussexes may have hinted at their plan in an IG video published on Tuesday. The post in question features footage from Markle and Prince Harry’s recent stop at London’s Canada House, and it’s soundtracked by the Raphael Lake song “Follow Me.” The lyrics to this tune are telling, especially in light of Markle and Prince Harry’s big announcement. Read just a few of them, below:

“There’s no distance in between/Darling you and me/Make this thing complete/We go drifting out to sea/Making memories..I’ll always hold on/Hopin’ you’ll miss me when I’m gone/So won’t you follow me/Follow me.”

Add this with the fact the Sussex’s video ends with them saying goodbye to the Canada House staff and facing a barrage of paparazzi, and you have what could be a hint…hidden in plain sight. Perhaps the “thing” they wanted to make “complete” was the announcement, and the “drifting out to sea” is code for them dividing time between the U.K. and North America. It’s a totally valid theory—though Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will probably never confirm this outright.

Whatever the case, they’ve returned to business as usual since Wednesday’s bombshell. On Friday afternoon, the @SussexRoyal Instagram account posted photos from Markle and Prince Harry’s recent visit to the Hubb Community Kitchen. They’ve made no mention of their stepping down since the first announcement.

“It is with your encouragement, particularly over the last few years, that we feel prepared to make this adjustment,” Markle and Prince Harry wrote in their release. “We now plan to balance our time between the United Kingdom and North America, continuing to honour our duty to The Queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages.”
