The Biggest Fashion Headlines of 2019

The headlines out of 2019 were, in a word, wild. They’re the kind that you remember and can recall exactly where you were when you heard them first, they’re stories you’ll probably tell your grandchildren one day. And though there’s no comparing impeachment proceedings and climate strikes to runway shows, within fashion there’s been a number of moments that have earned worldwide attention this year and possibly, for better or worse, shifted the industry.

The one conclusion you can be sure of: The biggest fashion news of this past year is an indication of what to look out for 2020. For example, while Chanel continues to transition to a new era following the loss of Karl Lagerfeld, Rihanna (also known as the World’s Richest Female Musician) is less than a year into building her own fashion empire. Plus, the most glamorous style moments of 2019 proved that the red carpet is a place to challenge norms. And occasionally, the strongest political power flex doesn’t happen while wear a tailored suit, but rather a traditional thobe or moccasins. In the upcoming election year, expect plenty more examples of fashion-as-communication to emerge.

Ahead revisit 10 of the most memorable fashion headlines of 2019.

Meghan Markle Sent One of Her Biggest Fans a Sweet Thank You Note

Somewhere in Charleston, South Carolina, a teenage Meghan Markle fan is having a very good weekend.

Becca Anderson, the aforementioned royal fan, shared the unthinkable on her Instagram Stories this week: Anderson had received a letter from Buckingham Palace dictated by none other than the Duchess of Sussex.

Per The Daily Mail, Anderson told her Instagram followers that she had written Markle a “letter of encouragement.” (She didn’t specify what, exactly, her letter said.) And on Friday, the teen posted a picture of a letter she received from Markle’s team in return.

While the letter wasn’t written directly by Markle, it included a message straight from the royal to her U.S. fan. “Her Royal Highness appreciated your generous words of support and has asked me to send you warmest thanks,” it said. The letter was signed by Claudia Spens, who serves as the royal family’s official head of general correspondence.

Here’s the entire note, courtesy of The Daily Mail:

“The Duchess of Sussex has asked me to thank you for your thoughtful card. It was so kind of you to take the trouble to write as you did. Her Royal Highness appreciated your generous words of support and has asked me to send you warmest thanks and best wishes.”

Markle is known for keeping up correspondence with some of her admirers. In October, she enlisted Prince Harry to deliver a voicemail to Aleyna Genc, Markle’s longtime student pen pal, during one of his solo engagements. Markle began writing Genc after the student saw the duchess deliver a speech at the United Nations.

It hasn’t just been royal super fans who’ve shared kind messages with Markle lately. A wave of public support hit the Duchess of Sussex in October, following the release of a documentary in which she opened up about media scrutiny. “[…] not many people have asked if I’m okay. But it’s a very real thing to be going through behind the scenes,” Markle said in the film regarding the pressure she’s endured.

For now, Markle and Prince Harry are far from the public eye. They’re in the middle of a six week break from royal duties.

Baby Archie's Biggest Milestones That Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Have Talked About

It seems like just yesterday that the we were all waiting not-so-patiently for the arrival of baby Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, the first child of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry. In just the first six months of his life, he’s met the world’s press, been christened in front of two future kings (his grandfather, Prince Charles and his uncle, Prince William), and gone on his first royal tour in Africa, where he casually met Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

While those are the kinds of milestones that Archie mostly has in common with his cousins—Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis—he’s also just a baby, doing baby things. Markle and Prince Harry revealed some of their son’s latest milestones at a previously-unannounced visit with military families in Windsor yesterday (November 6).

In a video on the Sussex Royal Instagram, Markle has a sweet interaction with a little girl. “Look at all your teeth! Archie just got two teeth, two tiny ones right there,” she says, gesturing to her bottom gum.

Another mom at the event, Amy Thompson, said she chatted with the Duchess of Sussex about their children being on the move. “My daughter Aeris is the same age as Archie and we talked about weaning and the children beginning to crawl,” she said, per Hello! magazine. “She’s just a normal mum and it was like talking to a friend.”

The visit with military families is just one of a number of events the royals have this week, leading up to Remembrance Sunday (November 10). Markle and Prince Harry visited Westminster Abbey’s Field of Remembrance today and placed crosses of remembrance there to mark the service and sacrifice of British veterans. It was Prince Harry’s seventh time at the event, and Markle’s first.

The Sussexes, Prince William, and Kate Middleton are expected to reunite this weekend for the Remembrance Sunday ceremonies.

Alex Rodriguez Was J.Lo's Biggest Cheerleader After a Show Mishap in Vegas

Alex Rodriguez has already shown he’s one of the world’s best Instagram boyfriends for Jennifer Lopez on the red carpet. But he’s also a constant cheerleader who’s been known to sing his fiancé’s praises in interviews and on social media posts. It turns out, he’s just as supportive backstage, too: At a recent concert, he was there to cheer J.Lo up after she had a tough time during a performance.

J.Lo released a video diary on Saturday that offers intimate, behind-the-scenes footage from her work-intensive “It’s My Party” tour. There’s one moment in the recording where she has some slight malfunctions onstage—she forgets a few dance moves and hits herself in the face with her microphone, drawing blood. She’s emotional when it all ends, but A-Rod meets up with her and her team and tells them how great they did: “It was the best show I’ve seen so far,” he says, turning to J.Lo a few moment later and adding, “And you showed why you’re a champion, baby.”

J. Lo is still pretty shaken up and tells him she’s not happy with herself, leading A-Rod to go full stage mom. He goes through each part of the performance and comforts her, insisting that she killed it. He also shares how he saw members of the audience loving every second of what was happening.

“I don’t even know what I’m doing,” J.Lo says tearfully. “And I would miss things, and I’m like, ‘Why am I messing them up?’…Like one step here or things that I never forget. I don’t forget anything!”

“Baby, nobody’s looking at steps. People are looking at how beautiful you look and how great you sound—and by the way, when you held that note, that was the longest you’ve held it so far. It was unbelievable,” he assures her.

Watch it here:

The whole exchange is pretty sweet, but not a total surprise—after all, A-Rod has been talking about J.Lo being his “dream date” for 20 years.

J.Lo seems pretty happy, too. In a scene later in the video, she gushes, “That’s why I love him, and I’m going to marry him. Whether he wants to or not, we’re getting married. We’re getting married forever and ever.”
