Critics' Choice Awards 2018: The Biggest Moments

Awards season continued on Thursday night (January 11) with the 2018 Critics’ Choice Awards, which, like the Golden Globes, honors the best performances of the year from both film and television. Unlike the Globes, however, this awards show felt very business as usual—which was disappointing. There was such a powerful energy at the Globes just a few days ago; winners used their speeches as an opportunity to talk about sexual harassment and Time’s Up, the newly-formed organization dedicated to ending sexual violence and gender imbalance in the workplace. But that topic was barely acknowledged tonight, for some reason. It’s imperative these conversations aren’t fleeting—there’s still so much work that needs to be done. We can’t lose focus.

Here were the biggest moments from the night, though:

Jay Pharoah randomly asking the audience if they miss Barack Obama before presenting the award for Best Comedy Movie.

Like, he just asked people that. There was no follow up. He just asked it. Iconic.

“It’s time for [men] to shut up, listen, and amplify.” — Kumail Nanjiani, while accepting the award for Best Comedy Movie (The Big Sick).

Say it louder.

Sterling K. Brown’s overall presence.

He elevates any room he’s in. That’s just a fact.

When host Olivia Munn jabbed at the male attendees from the Golden Globes for not speaking up more.

Via a champagne toast with Niecy Nash, no less. I raise my glass of Landmark Vineyards Pinot Noir—a sponsor of tonight’s show—to you, queens!

Rachel Brosnahan reignited the Time’s Up fire during her acceptance speech for Best Actress in a Comedy series (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel). Before her speech, it felt like the celebrities were really dodging the issue.

“I know we’re not all here in black tonight, but let’s not lose focus,” she said. “If you haven’t already, please go to timesupnow.com, donate to the legal defense fund, let’s keep this going, please.”

Gal Gadot winning the See Her Award, which honors women in entertainment who helped increase diversity and representation in the industry this year.

“It’s not only our job to entertain, but our duty to inspire and educate for love and respect,” Gadot said. “My promise and commitment to all of you is that I will never be silent. We will continue…[and] band together to make strides for equality.”

Dacre Montgomery’s smolder, which lasted all night.

I’m weak.

Gal Gadot sceaming, “Ahhh, come on!” when the show tried to rush Patty Jenkins offstage.

Let her speak, y’all!

'This Is Us' Season 2 Episode 11 Recap: The Pearson Three Have Their Biggest Fight Ever

This Is Us is back, and it’s weepier than ever. Huzzah! Read the recap, below—I’m not going to keep you waiting. Spoilers ahead, obviously.

We start with a flashback: Child Kate’s playing Monopoly with Rebecca. Child Randall—the world’s most perfect child—has new glasses, and he’s afraid the kids at school will call him Urkel. Pre-teens are terrible. Child Kate asks Rebecca for more cookies, and Rebecca says they should eat apples instead; it’s awkward. But all of this is interrupted by Mustache Working Dad Jack, who comes home, much to the delight of Kate. (His ‘stache looks particularly off the rails in this shot.)

Jack’s co-worker has a cabin in the Poconos and says he and his family can have it for a full week, if they want. So the Pearsons are going on vacation, which means emotional fuckery is afoot.

Child Kevin arrives to the Poconos a few days after everyone else because he was at football camp or something. Rebecca has to straight-up tell Kevin not to make fun of Randall’s glasses because he’s a monster. And she’s also concerned about Kate, too: She notices everything exciting Kate about their trip revolves around food. Jack says Rebecca’s overreacting and that Kate is just “big-boned.” Oy. There’s a lot to unpack here; hopefully This Is Us deals with this subplot respectfully.

Kate, Kevin, and Jack start playing a football game, and Kate says she’s tired and wants to stop. Jack says she’s been “eating a lot of sweets” and wants her to exercise to be healthy. This upsets Kate, and she runs away. Jack follows her, and she asks him straight-up if he thinks she’s fat. It’s a poignant scene. The actress who plays Child Kate, Mackenzie Hancsicsak, is heartbreaking here.

But you know who isn’t? Child Kevin, who throws a football at Child Randall and calls him “four eyes.” WTF?!? Randall then loses his glasses, and Rebecca immediately thinks Kevin had something to do with it…as she damn well should. Kevin then goes on a rant, saying he “hates” Rebecca and that she “sucks” and their family “sucks.” Well, you know what? I hate him, and I don’t care if he’s a child. He’s the worst! Always and forever!

In the middle of the night during a thunderstorm, Kevin finds Randall’s glasses under the bed and rushes to his parents’ room to tell them. There, he finds Randall and Kate sleeping in the bed with their parents, and there’s no room for him. So he goes to sleep on the floor, which is beyond heavy-handed foreshadowing for what happens in this episode.

Adult Kate

Kate’s packing for something and lamenting about how it’s been a month since she’s seen Kevin. He’s in rehab—remember the DUI from last episode?—and she thinks that’s somehow her fault. Toby takes out the trash, but the bottom of the bag gives in, revealing junk food containers. It appears Kate’s broken her diet, and he looks concerned. I could write an essay about how policing Kate’s eating on this show is icky, but let’s just focus on what happens next. (FWIW, Toby looks considerably less annoying in this episode, and I don’t know why.)

Adult Randall

Randall’s going on a trip, too. Apparently, all of the siblings and Rebecca are visiting Kevin in rehab. We learn Tess hopped into the back of Kevin’s car because she was sad about Déjà moving out of the house. She promises not to run away again, but Randall and Beth are still worried. (Randall also looks hot AF in the jacket he’s wearing, but that’s neither here nor there.)

“If she was doing a little worse, then I could stay here with her and not have to visit your jackass brother.” —Beth, reading Kevin for filth.

Beth, Queen of This Is Us, starts dragging Kevin right out the gate. She calls him a “jackass” and says she’s pissed they have to visit him. They’re both upset with Kevin, but Randall says they need to be there for him because Kevin helped him during his lowest points last year. Essentially, they’re grinning and bearing their anger on this trip, which Beth calls “white people repression.” Iconic.

Adult Kevin

Everyone shows up at the rehab center for Kevin. He emerges looking like his old self; the beard is gone, and he’s enthusiastic and lively. He looks like a damn snack again and, honestly, thank God. He’s very jumpy, though, which is weird. His therapist, Barbara, suggests a therapy session between him, his siblings, and Rebecca, which is going to be interesting.

Kevin apologizes to Kate, Randall, and Rebecca during the session, but it’s clear Randall is pissed because he keeps saying, “We’re here for you, Kev.” (That’s what he and Beth agreed to keep saying to mask their anger toward Kevin.)

But the therapy goes deeper. Kevin says he became an addict because he’s always felt like the third runner-up to Kate and Randall. Kate always had the attention of their father, and Randall their mother. He drowned out his insecurities with football, fame, and then drugs and alcohol. He then says the Pearsons are a family of addicts: Kevin’s one, Jack is one, their grandfather is one, and Kevin suggests even Kate is one—with food—and this strikes a nerve in her. Rebecca vehemently defends Jack, saying he’s “so much more” than an addict.

“Of course, he’s Mr. Rehab.”—Beth, dragging Kevin more.

And then the family completely explodes. Randall says Kevin isn’t an addict, but just desperate for attention. This causes the two brothers to go at it: Kevin says Rebecca’s always loved Randall the most and that Tess hopped in the backseat of his car to avoid the insanity of Randall’s home. This leads to a pretty shocking confession: Rebecca thought Randall was the “easiest” child to love.

The Pearson Three then have a tranquil debriefing on a park bench. Randall says they all view their upbringing through different perspectives and he doesn’t want to “crap all over” Kevin’s. They apologize and smile and make lighthearted jokes about their intense therapy session because this show shifts emotions every five seconds.

Meanwhile, the supporting family members kicked out of the therapy session—Beth, Toby, and Miguel—go have beers at a bar. Their conversation pivots to Jack, who Beth and Miguel dub the ultimate “Pearson no-fly zone.” They say they’ll never meet Jack or live up to him. Toby confesses Kate’s “fallen off the wagon” with her eating and he’s upset she isn’t talking to him about it. It’s clear all three of them feel on the outside of the Pearson gang—no one more than Miguel, who says point-blank he married his best friend’s wife.

Things end with Toby confronting Kate about her secret junk food. But Kate beats him to the punch: She says she has “a lot of issues” with food, so we’ll probably delve deeper into that as the season continues. Honestly, I’m here for that—so long as it’s done carefully and empathetically.

The final scene is rough: Rebecca reveals to Kevin she didn’t think she had to worry about him growing up, and now she’s seeing how she’s wrong. Oof, talk about coming back with a vengeance. This Is Us has me bawling all over again…and rolling my eyes. But mostly crying.

  • <img src=”https://media.glamour.com/photos/59750eed242b4f1672f38d54/master/pass/DCS4_Heather.jpg” alt=”BrainStim“/>

At Liberos, a research center in Los Angeles run by sex researcher Nicole Prause, Ph.D., you can come get your brain zapped for a better sex life. Through a method called Direct Current Stimulation, the BrainStim headset delivers electrical currents to your brain with the aim of boosting or curbing your sex drive—depending on whether you feel it’s too low or too high—by restoring your brain’s reward center to healthy activation levels for around an hour. Right now, you have to go into the lab to get it, but Prause is hoping to make it commercially available in the near future.

This virtual companion is an addition to the eerily realistic RealDoll sex robots. You attach the head of “Harmony” to any RealDoll body and select which personality traits you’d like her to have. Then she’ll have a realistic conversation with you—although, when Engadget’s Christopher Trout tried her out, she wasn’t exactly the best conversationalist. For example, her response to, “What’s your favorite sex position?” was “I’m not that kind of girl.” Fair enough!

As if the powerful suction of the Satisfyer Pro 2 weren’t amazing enough, this year saw the release of the Satisfyer Pro 2 Next Generation, which has an even more impressive motor. The air waves the head creates will suck orgasms right out of you, catching you off guard in a way that’s almost too good. Its adorably-shaped close cousin, the Satisfyer Pro 2 Penguin: Next Generation, is also a force of nature. But with its cushy head, the Satisfyer Pro 2 Next Generation is super comfortable and powerful, especially for its $50 price tag.

Imagine having your vibrator’s movements match whatever porn you were watching with no effort on your part. Well, Pornhub is one step closer to making that futuristic premise a reality, thanks to its new set of videos in which the action controls the movements of sex toys. Unfortunately, it currently only works with Fleshlight Launch or Kiiroo Onyx—both toys for penises—but Pornhub plans to add videos that connect to vibrators in the future. We hope they get on that soon, for the sake of the quarter of Pornhub users who are women.

In 2014, Dame Products launched Eva on Indiegogo, and it became the most successful crowdfunded sex toy in history. The tiny clitoral vibrator fits between your labia, so you can enjoy its vibrations during sex without using your hands. Three years later, Dame cofounders Alexandra Fine and Janet Lieberman got to work making Eva even better in response to customer feedback, and Eva II was born. The toy’s second edition has smaller proportions, a lighter body, and shorter wings with an adjusted profile so that it fits a greater variety of bodies. The motor’s gotten quieter and stronger, the whole thing is waterproof, and the button’s easier to press, which means more evenly distributed orgasms for more couples.

In addition to vibrating at the tip, this one uses rotating beads to add even more sensation. In combination, the toy produces seven rotation and vibration patterns and six intensity levels to help introduce users to anal pleasure.

If you and your partner have been bumping up against the same relationship problems over and over and want to solve them once and for all, there’s an app for that. We Did It uses artificial intelligence to identify your weak points as a couple and help you work through them with specific activities. You each fill out a survey on how you feel about different aspects of your relationship, what you’d like more of, and how you’d like to reach that point. Then, based on your responses, the app plans a “dream week” packed with massages, picnics, household chores, or whatever would benefit you both.

This vibrator has two vibrating heads to provide plenty of G-spot and clitoral stimulation, but its most unique function is its temperature control, which adapts to your own body temperature for a more realistic sex toy experience. Another plus? It charges in its case, so you don’t have to worry about your roommates spotting it on your dresser.

Hot Octopuss, the company that brought us the “world’s first guybrator” the Pulse, released its first female toy this fall. Instead of the usual motor inside a vibrator, the head of this toy moves up and down to create vibrations—and they are powerful. The Queen Bee is perfect for those days when you’re feeling too lazy to take your pants off, because you could probably feel its vibrations from behind a four-inch wall.

This vibrator—a revamped, rechargeable version of an existing toy—buzzes along with whatever sounds it picks up from your surroundings, from footsteps to music. Wear it to a club and there’ll be a party going on in your pants. Fair warning, though: If your goal is to get off, you’re probably better off using it in “wireless remote control mode” than “club mode,” which tends to make the vibrations pretty inconsistent.

When it comes to sex ed, our options have historically been lacking. Most of us didn’t get a thorough sex education in school, to say the least, and as adults, we’ve basically just got porn—which (hopefully) nobody watches for accurate information about sex. Sure, there are genuinely informative in-person workshops at sex toy shops, but not everyone can attend those, depending on where they live. Combining the accuracy and inclusivity of these workshops with the accessibility of porn, Andrea Barrica created O.school, a site you can watch several live-streamed classes per day on everything from healthy relationships to sex toys. A large portion of the teachers are LGBT and people of color, and the courses are geared to make people of all different identities feel welcome.

When you think of a classic sex toy, the Hitachi Magic Wand may come to mind—but the company wouldn’t identify itself that way: The people behind the “massager”don’t want to associate themselves with sex toys. Alicia Sinclair created Le Wand to reclaim the wand vibrator as, well, a vibrator. It comes with a “pleasure guide” so users can enjoy its NSFW purposes, as well as plenty of fun attachments to explore internal stimulation. It’s also cordless, making for a more seamless experience.

Homelessness Was This Teenager's Biggest Secret, But Her Incredible Story Has a Happy Ending

Every year, 600,000 families with 1.3 million children experience homelessness in the United States. That’s a staggering number. Under such heartbreaking circumstances, no one would fault children dealing with homelessness for feeling despair that impacts their relationships, drive and performance in school. But Angelique didn’t succumb to any of that.

Her story is one that can inspire both compassion and support from those not directly touched by homelessness, and serve as a powerful message to the 600,000 families dealing with homelessness: they can get through it.

Angelique’s mother, Leigh, suffers from depression and bipolar disorder, which have made it difficult for her to maintain a steady income. Angelique’s father, originally from Nigeria, lives in California. Now 18, Angelique, Leigh, and Leigh’s mother lived in their car for 8 months when Angelique was 13, and Angelique still managed to maintain straight As during this period.

Rather than making her angry or leaving her feeling defeated, Angelique’s past (and current struggles as a result of her mother’s ongoing battle with bipolar disorder) have galvanized her to help others. While she’s a talented actor and dancer, she wants to become a psychologist so she can help people like her mother who are suffering from mental illness. Her primary goal in the near-term is to become completely independent: “I know I have no safety net. Everything that I want to be, it’s all on me. This experience has driven me to this independence in the way that I never felt like I had an option to neglect my schoolwork, because I knew [it] was my ticket to never having to experience anything like this again.”

Watch Angelique, her family, teachers and mentors discuss her journey, including its happy ending. And prepare to be inspired.

The Biggest Celeb Costume Trend for Halloween 2017 Is Disco Queen

There have been a lot of great celebrity costumes for Halloween 2017 season thus far. But none of them have been chicer or more popular than the 1970s-inspired disco queen looks that everyone from Kaia Gerber and mom Cindy Crawford to Amal Clooney were seen wearing over the holiday weekend.

To be fair, we’re guessing part of the costume’s popularity has to do with the fact that Casamigos, the tequila brand co-founded by George Clooney and Rande Gerber (a.k.a. husbands to Amal and Cindy, respectively), threw a ’70s-themed party in Los Angeles over the weekend. But it also makes sense that the costume is having a moment given the decade’s ongoing popularity in fashion, beauty, and pop culture. After all, who doesn’t love an opportunity to sport big sexy hair and wear something slinky and shimmery?

Check out all the groovy versions of the look below, then let them inspire your own costume come Tuesday.

Amal looked every bit the disco diva when she hit the party wearing a sparkly turquoise jumpsuit, huge hoop earrings, round sunglasses, and teased hair.

Lady Gaga's Netflix Documentary: 8 Reveals That Will Surprise Even the Biggest Little Monsters

Lady Gaga’s new Netflix documentary, Gaga: Five Foot Two, drops today, and it’s good. Very good.

The film, which runs a little over an hour and 40 minutes, is an emotional look into the life of the biggest pop star on Earth. Yes, it addresses her professional life—specifically, the creation of her fifth album, Joanne, and her Super Bowl halftime performance—but Five Foot Two is personal more than anything. Gaga talks about some very deep issues in this film: her relationship with Taylor Kinney (and other boyfriends), sketchy music producers, and both her physical and mental health. It’s an explosive watch—even for the biggest Little Monsters.

These eight reveals from the documentary are particularly interesting. Read on, below, and check out Gaga: Five Foot Two on Netflix right now.

She’s over fuckboys. One of the first sentences Gaga says in her documentary is “me and Taylor are fighting.” Yes, she’s referring to Taylor Kinney, the Chicago Fire star whom she was engaged to but broke things off with in July 2016. She doesn’t reveal the exact cause of the split, but she does go on a rather long monologue about how her “threshold” for men’s “bullshit” is pretty low. “I just don’t care,” she said. “I’m 30. I feel better than ever. All my insecurities are gone. I don’t feel insecure about who I am as a woman. I’m not embarrassed or ashamed of what I have. I feel more sexy and sexual—all that shit is better. What happens, is, I don’t know. In relationships, you gotta move together as best as you can.”

Her mental health and physical pain are inexplicably linked. “If I’m depressed, my full body can spasm,” Gaga said in reference to the chronic pain she experiences as a result of her fibromyalgia. Throughout the documentary, she discusses the way her physical pain affects her mental state. It’s clear that the hip injury Gaga suffered from in 2013, which caused her to cancel half her Born This Way Ball Tour, still takes a toll on her psychologically. One of the most poignant moments in the film is when Gaga becomes elated after completing a performance and feels no physical pain for the first time. She speaks emphatically about wanting to perform again and again, like a child playing her favorite sport for the first time.

    PHOTO: Courtesy of Netflix

She’s over the Madonna “feud,” but she does have one bone to pick: “The thing with me and Madonna, for example, is I admired her always—and I still admire her, no matter what she might think of me. I do,” she said. “The only thing that really bothers me about her is [this]: I’m Italian and from New York, so if I’ve got a problem with somebody, I’m ‘gonna fucking tell it to your face. But no matter how much respect I have for her as a performer, I could never wrap my head around the fact that she wouldn’t look me in the eye and tell me I was reductive or whatever. I saw it on fucking TV. Telling me that I’m a piece of shit through the media—it’s like a guy passing me a note through his friend…I want Madonna to push me up against the wall and kiss me and tell me I’m a piece of shit.” Seems like a reasonable request to us. (As a Madonna and Lady Gaga super-fan, may I just add that their entire feud was dumb and cheapened the work of both artists.)

She had a mini-meltdown while shooting a scene in American Horror Story: Roanoke. The exact issue she had is unclear, but things ended with Gaga loudly complaining that she had too many jobs to afford being delayed on the set. “I like to know what I’m doing before,” she said. “I don’t mind changing it on the fly, but something this complicated, when they keep throwing shit at you, it’s like— I just don’t wanna sound German.” From this, it seems like there was conflict with the dialogue or dialect that her character used.

The male music professionals she worked with before Joanne didn’t make her feel the best. “What I was on my own wasn’t good enough,” Gaga said in reference to her previous professional collaborations. “I don’t feel that way working with Mark [Ronson, one of the leads on Joanne]. In a similar light, Gaga revealed she used avant-garde visuals back in the day to protest the music industry’s expectation for her to be sexy. “When they wanted me to be sexy, when they wanted me to be pop, I always put some absurd spin on it to make me feel like I was in control…If I’m gonna be sexy on the VMAs singing about the paparazzi, I’m gonna do it while bleeding to death [and] reminding you of what fame did to Marilyn Monroe.”

    PHOTO: Courtesy of Netflix

Gaga partly wore outrageous outfits back in the day because she wasn’t secure in herself. As a super-fan, this threw me for a loop because Gaga always contended that those opulent visuals were a part of who she is. Here, she says the opposite. “I never felt comfortable enough to sing and just be this way,” Gaga said, referring to her current, stripped-down Joanne era. “To just sing and wear my hair back. I never felt pretty enough or smart enough or a good enough musician.”

There’s a correlation between her professional life exploding—and her personal life imploding. Well, there’s not a scientific correlation, but Gaga feels like some connection exists, and it upsets her. She explained that every major music achievement she’s experienced has come with a breakup. “I sold 10 million [records] and lost Matt. I sold 30 million and lost Luke. I did a movie and lose Taylor. It’s like a turnover. This is the third time I’ve had my heart broken like this,” Gaga said. Ironically, Kinney sent Gaga flowers the day of her Super Bowl performance.

She’s still genuinely shocked by her own success. Her mouth literally dropped when someone told her Joanne was number one around the world.
