What Selena Gomez Just Said About Princess Diana Will Warm Your Heart

Selena Gomez revealed many tidbits about her music and life in her new interview with Dazed (see the stunning cover, below). But one of the most interesting soundbites the singer-actor gave is that she’s a massive Princess Diana fan.

Dazed had several influential people send Gomez questions for the interview—including photographer Brianna Capozzi, who asked, “Who would you like to be stuck in a lift with?” The Rare singer said Princess Diana, and her reasoning was poignant and sweet.

Princess Diana. She was such a warrior,” Gomez said. “I love everything she did. There’s this interview I will never forget where she is like, ‘I just want to be the queen of people’s hearts.’ You know, she didn’t necessarily care for all of the rules that [were imposed on her].”

Writer Emily Segal chimed in after Gomez’s response, saying she loves all the stories about how Princess Diana reportedly used to go to gay clubs in drag with her friends. To that, Gomez said, “Yeah, like, come on! She is so…. Ugh! I can’t believe it. I just wish she was here.”

Selena Gomez can no doubt relate, on some level, to the media scrutiny Princess Diana endured when she was alive. Selena says her music has been instrumental in helping her get through the harder stages of her life.

“I was dealing with fame and with being run-down, dealing with depression, anxiety and other mental health issues that I had,” she told Dazed. “It was all a bit confusing. When [my 2019 song] ‘Lose You to Love Me’ came out, I stood back and had this moment, like, ‘Oh…this is a huge reason why I’ve pushed myself through this. This is why.’ I was able to release a song that hopefully helps to heal some people, or just lets them know they are not alone. I was actually letting it go personally and when that happened, something inside of me just left. And that’s why I am grateful for the chapters of my life. I’m not saying that it’s gonna be easy from now on, but I have a lot more strength and a lot more courage and a bigger voice to stand up for what I deserve.”

Hailey Bieber Princess Diana Sweater: How To Get The Look

Of all of Princess Diana’s most iconic looks, her off-duty oversized sweatshirts, bike shorts, and sneakers were a fan favorite—long before the combination was majorly on-trend. And sure, no one can do it like Princess Di, but Hailey Bieber came really, really close in her most recent editorial for Vogue Paris.

In the spread shot by Gregory Harris and styled by Virginie Benarroch, Mrs. Bieber did her best Princess Diana impression. If you came across one of the photos on your Instagram feed (chances are you did—they basically broke the internet this week) you probably had to do a double take.

The model looked nearly identical to the Princess in recreations of some of Diana’s most famous paparazzi photos, down to the messy updos.

But the obsession with Princess Diana’s off-duty looks, Bieber’s off-duty looks, Bieber-imitating-Diana’s-off-duty-looks looks probably has to do with the fact that they’re so accessible. Unlike Hailey’s exposed Alexander Wang thong at the 2019 Met Gala, this just-got-back-from-the-gym look is a little more realistic for everyday. It’s so attainable, one of the sweatshirts Bieber wore in the Vogue Paris photoshoot is actually just $60.

That’s right, Bieber’s Princess Di-inspired sweatshirt can be bought at Mango right now.

Considering some of Princess Diana’s actual sweatshirts have gone on to be auctioned off for as much as $10,000, this is a steal. All you need to recreate the rest of the look is a simple pair of white dad sneakers and bike shorts. Princess Diana and Hailey Bieber would be proud.

The Sweet Way Kate Middleton Paid Homage to Princess Diana at Baby Archie's Christening

Baby Archie was christened at Windsor Castle on Saturday, and although Meghan Markle and Prince Harry opted for a private event, they had some close relatives with them. Kate Middleton was among the select friends and family members who attended the intimate event, and she chose to do so while also paying a sweet tribute to Princess Diana: Middleton wore pair of earrings that Lady Di had actually worn to Prince Harry’s own christening in 1984.

A family portrait that Meghan and Harry released on Saturday shows Middleton wearing a pink pussybow dress by Stella McCartney—a longtime favorite designer of hers—and a matching headband with magenta heels. It gave us some serious Blair Waldorf vibes and the whole look was perfect for such a personal family event. But eagle-eyed fans caught one important detail: Middleton also wore Princess Diana’s Collingwood pearl and diamond earrings. Since Princess Diana had shown them off during Prince Harry’s baptism, it made for a sweet tribute when Middleton brought them out for Baby Archie’s big day.

Of course, it’s not the first time Middleton has paid homage Princess Diana in some way: She has a long record of honoring Princess Diana’s best fashion moments throughout the years. Middleton once wore a navy Alessandra Rich polka dot dress with an ivory collar that reminds many people of a polka dot number that Princess Diana was photographed in back in 1985. And the red Jenny Packham dress that Middleton wore just after Prince Louis was born was also extremely similar to the red, collared dress Princess Diana chose to wear when she did a photocall following Prince Harry’s birth in 1984. Middleton has also worn a few tiaras and other pieces of jewelry that once belonged to her late mother-in-law, showing that she, along with the other royals, are keeping Lady Di’s memory alive.

All the Times Kate Middleton's Fashion Has Reminded Us of Princess Diana

Rarely does a week go by without a Kate Middleton outfit sighting the world instantly wants to copy. And while we now scramble to pick up her exact Zara coats or a close imitation of her best dresses, Middleton’s fashion choices themselves appear to be inspired by another member of the royal family: the late Princess Diana. Over the years many have inferred that the Duchess of Cambridge’s wardrobe has paid homage to her late mother-in-law, with some instances being more obvious than others. Whether it be a single similar item or a piece-for-piece recreation, some of Middleton’s best looks make us reminisce about Princess Diana’s iconic stylebook. The two women favored different designers—Kate is partial to Alexander McQueen and Erdem, while Princess Diana leaned into David Sassoon and Bruce Oldfield—yet both women’s tastes include crisp coats, pastel suits, and dazzling formal wear. Here we gathered the 15 instances of straight-up fashion twinning, courtesy of Kate Middleton and Princess Diana.

Prince William Says Losing His Mother, Princess Diana, at a Young Age Was a 'Pain Like No Other'

When Princess Diana was tragically killed in a car accident in 1997, the world mourned. But her death had a profound effect on her two sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, who were just 15 and 12, respectively, at the time.

In recent years, both the princes have opened up publicly about how they were affected by their mother’s death in their efforts to raise awareness about mental health. Now, in a preview clip for the BBC special A Royal Team Talk: Tackling Mental Health, which features a conversation with British soccer stars, William is more candid than ever. “I think when you are bereaved at a very young age, anytime really, but particularly at a young age—I can resonate closely to that—you feel a pain like no other pain,” he says.”And you know that in your life it’s going to be very difficult to come across something that is going to be an even worse pain than that.”

“It also brings you so close to all those other people out there who have been bereaved,” William continued. “So instantly, when you talk to someone else… You can almost see it in their eyes sometimes.” He wants people to feel more comfortable sharing their pain in hopes of being able to help one another. “There has to be a moment for that,” William says, referring to having that British “stiff upper lip.” “We’re not robots.”

Prince Harry also talked about feeling the loss of Diana after the birth of his first son, Archie, with Meghan Markle. “He said missing a mother is like missing some kind of security, how you need that as a son, and it falls away when you lose your mother,” Dennis van der Stroon said of his conversation with Harry during a recent Invictus Games event in the Netherlands. “He said he meets a lot of people in his work who have lost a mother, father, sister, brother, or relatives, and when he hears their story, as he heard my story, he said he doesn’t feel so alone.”

While the circumstances are definitely sad, it really is wonderful to see the princes talk so openly about their grieving process as a way to encourage transparency and honest conversations around mental health—and directly affect the lives of others.

Kate Middleton's Dress Is So Similar to This Famous Princess Diana Polka-Dot Look

Take a close look at Kate Middleton‘s style, and you’ll find plenty of outfits reminiscent of Princess Diana. It goes beyond wearing the late royal’s favorite tiara: It’s mimicking her penchant for bold monochromatic looks, festive fascinators, and even polka dots. You can add yet another outfit to their list of shared fashion moments, courtesy of the latest royal family portrait.

Clarence House surprise-released images of a group photo shoot done in honor of Princess Charles’ 70th birthday, featuring Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall; the Duke and Duchess of Sussex; and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge with their three children: Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis. Royal fans instantly began gushing over the candid nature of the portraits—and it didn’t take long for them to find a connection to Princess Diana, via Middleton’s outfit.

In the photos, the Duchess of Cambridge wears a navy polka-dot dress with a contrasting ivory collar by Alessandra Rich. And for some, it brought to mind a style worn by Princess Diana back in 1985, while at home in Kensington Palace.

Here’s Middleton’s take…

…and here’s Princess Diana’s.

Side by side, the similarities are striking. The designer of Middleton’s dress is known for her vintage-inspired silhouettes and prints, so we can partially credit the ’80s look of the style to that. Still, the duchess has a well-documented streak of Diana-esque outfits, dating back to 2005, when she first started being photographed with Prince William.

This exact Alessandra Rich dress also happens to be a celebrity favorite, having been worn by Sarah Jessica Parker, Daisy Ridley, and Abigail Spencer—the latter to Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s wedding, no less. The royal connection is strong.
