Patty Jenkins' Salary More Than Tripled for the 'Wonder Woman' Sequel

Director Patty Jenkins is having quite the year.

First, she gets immortalized as her very own Barbie doll for International Women’s Day. “I am someone who is lucky enough to make the films I want to make,” Jenkins said at the time. “But the honor of having a Barbie that looks like me and is doing what I do touches and delights the girl and child in me to the core. It celebrates all sides of me and my hopes for myself and others, in a very special way.”

Now, news is swirling about the well-deserved raise she’s receiving for her work on the Wonder Woman sequel which is due to hit theaters in 2019. A new Variety story reports that Jenkins will make $9 million for her writing and directing roles on the new film. The first Wonder Woman movie grossed over $400 million domestically and The Hollywood Reporter says that she was paid around $1 million (though there may have been additional bonuses based on the film’s success.)

Hopefully, Jenkins’ salary is the beginning of a trend of equal pay for female directors—something she has previously said she was acutely aware of during the negotiation process. ‘You’re of course aware of the money,” Jenkins told Variety last October. “But I’ve never been more aware of a duty than I was in this deal. I was extremely aware that I had to make sure I was being paid what the male equivalent would be.” She continued, “Women who have not been in a system that allows them to build up the same level of pay as men are not able to be paid the same as men forever if that’s the way it continues. You have to ask for it to happen, and you have to ask when you’re the appropriate person.”

Catt Sadler Fires Back at E!'s Claim That Jason Kennedy's Higher Salary Was Justified

Sunday evening’s Golden Globes red carpet felt like a longtime-coming reckoning for E! News as several actresses spoke out in support of Catt Sadler following her departure from the network because of a pay-disparity dispute. And now the former anchor has fired back herself at her former employer, which recently claimed that the disparity in pay between Sadler and former colleague Jason Kennedy was somehow justified.

On Tuesday, while speaking to reporters during the Television Critics Association press tour, NBCU Lifestyle president Frances Berwick spoke openly about Sadler’s decision to leave E! after learning she made nearly half of cohost Kennedy’s salary. Berwick said she “wanted to set the record straight” that Sadler and Kennedy’s salaries couldn’t be fairly compared as the pair had “different roles” at the network. Berwick went on to justify the pay gap by explaining that Sadler and Kennedy had different amounts of airtime and different focuses altogether. “Our employees’ salaries are based on their roles and their expertise, regardless of gender,” Berwick said, following up with, “Catt was focused on daytime. Jason Kennedy is on prime evening news, plus red carpet.”

But in an interview today with The Hollywood Reporter, Sadler vehemently denied these claims by Berwick. According to Sadler, comparing Kennedy’s involvement with the network against her own would be comparing “apples to apples.” She continued, “We came to the network at the same time and did similar jobs. For people to use the argument that Giuliana somehow made more money than Jason, that comparison doesn’t work. They’re apples and oranges. She joined before him, she was managing editor, she had multiple shows on the network. It’s unfortunate that people who don’t work there are trying to be the voice for the network. The only story I can tell is my truth, and the truth speaks for itself.”

Back in December in the initial post on her website announcing her separation with E!, Sadler wrote, “I have two decades experience in broadcasting and started at the network the very same year as my close friend and colleague that I adore. My team and I asked for what I know I deserve and were denied repeatedly.”

Catt Sadler Leaves 'E!' After Learning Her Male Co-Host Earned Double Her Salary

If you tune into E! for some celebrity news over the next few days, you might notice that Catt Sadler, one of the network’s most popular and busiest hosts, won’t be gracing the small screen. And it’s for a very unfortunate reason.

As reported by People, Catt has decided to leave E! owing to a large pay disparity with her current E! News co-host, Jason Kennedy—specifically, that Jason was earning double the amount as she was for the same job. “Up until this point, I mean it really has been a dream job. Literally a dream job. I’m from Indiana, born and raised, and I had my sights set on E! and I’ve seen the world. I’ve had the best experiences,” Catt said in a statement. “I’ve gotten incredibly close with all of my coworkers. It’s like a family here and it’s been beautiful for the majority of my run. I pinch myself every day the job that I get to do. I have so much fun. It has almost been surreal. But then, this year happened.”

Specifically, 2017 brought forth a two-hour live daily show for Catt, Daily Pop, as well as her regular gig as co-host of the mega-popular E! News. When it was time to negotiate a new contract going into the new year, it was then she realized that “my male equivalent at the network who I started with the same year and have come up with doing essentially similar jobs, if not the same job, wasn’t just making a little bit more than me but was making double my salary and has been for several years.” When negotiations proved not to be fruitful for a pay increase that was equivalent to Jason’s, Catt then decided to leave.

“That was really hard to swallow, but you know information is supposed to be power and when my team began negotiations knowing what we knew, that was the barometer in which I expected to be paid, based on the law and based on what I know to be fair,” Catt explained. “And what I believe in my heart of hearts is reasonable … I’m a single mom of two kids. I’ve given my all to this network. I’ve sacrificed time away from my family and I have dedicated my entire career to this network. And when you learn something like that, it makes you feel very small and underappreciated and undervalued.”

What does the future hold for Catt? She’s not sure, but promises her fans will see her soon in some capacity—perhaps on a new network, even.
