Gossip Girl Writer Reveals Dan Humphrey Wasn't the Original Gossip Girl

Good morning, Upper East Siders! Gossip Girl here, and have we got a scoop for you. While it was revealed in the finale of the popular CW show that the one and only Dan Humphrey, AKA Lonely Boy, AKA a writer who somehow managed to get his work placed in both The New Yorker and Vanity Fair during the show despite never really actually writing, was the brains behind Gossip Girl. However, according to the show’s writer and executive producer Joshua Safran, Dan wasn’t the original choice for the titular character who chronicles the lives of Manhattan’s elite: it was Nate Archibald!

BuzzFeed reports that Safran stopped by the Vulture Festival to talk both the original show and the upcoming HBO reboot, and he spilled the beans about how Dan ended up as GG.

“I like to joke that Dan was Gossip Girl because I had left the show by then. Dan was not my intended Gossip Girl, so honestly, you’d have to ask someone else,” he said. “But I understand why Dan was Gossip Girl. I just had my heart set on Nate.” And apparently, before Nate, he thought Serena’s brother Eric van der Woodsen should have been Gossip Girl, which makes a lot of sense when you think about it. (We, like Blair, thought it was Dorota.)

“We worked hard to kind of lay in tiny seeds about it being Eric, and then the NY Post wrote an article saying that Gossip Girl was Eric so we were like, ‘We gotta scratch that,'” Safran revealed. “Then one of the writers realized that Nate had never sent a tip in to Gossip Girl, which is true at least through the end of season five. Nate never sent in a tip in through all of those episodes, which is when we’re like, ‘Oh, well then he’s Gossip Girl.'” Imagine if Nate had been able to incorporate Gossip Girl into his newspaper, the Spectator!

Safran is returning for the GG reboot, and while we don’t know when the show will premiere, we do know that it’s set about 12-13 years after the finale, so in “real time,” and will feature high schoolers at Constance Billard Academy, Serena and Blair’s alma mater. The original cast won’t be in the new show (we think), save for Kristen Bell as narrator, and the cast will be more diverse than the ’00s version.

That’s about all we know so far, so until it hits our TV screens, we’ll be busy rewatching the original series for the hundredth time and imagining what life would have been like had sweet, golden boy Nate been unmasked as Gossip Girl. XOXO!

Best Leggings to Travel and Fly in, According to a Travel Writer

Travel days are when efficiency really matters. Exactly how late can I set my alarm for so I make my flight, while still allowing enough time if my Uber gets stuck in traffic? How can I arrange my carry-on so I can unpack for the security screening in seconds? And, of course: What can I wear so that I can be comfortable on a long-haul flight, still look like I’ve put thought into my outfit, and sprint to the gate, should dire moments call for it?

If I’m being honest, I still romanticize what getting dressed for a flight looks like Mad Men-style dresses, heels, a scarf that’s tied with that Parisian flair. (Yes, my reference imagery is midcentury airline advertisement.) But then my alarm goes off at 4:12 A.M. after three hours’ sleep, and it’s a race out the door to catch my red-eye.

I’m a travel writer based in Berlin, which means I head to the airport about four times a month to fly budget airlines that make Southwest feel like the Ritz Carlton of air travel. When I think about what I want to wear, I’ll go for an outfit that’s going to make my day easier—not more complicated.

I’ve written about the $35 dress that served as my go-to travel day uniform, and I still stand by it. It’s a great piece that works with or without tights, can bounce between climates (both weather-related and cultural), and is basically like wearing an acceptably oversized T-shirt. The only downside? No pockets. That’s fine if you’re a highly organized person with a designated spot for your passport, your wallet, your boarding pass, your headphones, and so on. But that’s not me. And when I was staring down the barrel of an almost 12-hour flight to Singapore (plus a layover), I knew I was going to have to switch it up.

I’ve been wearing these $75 leggings from Victoria’s Secret for years, exclusively for fitness purposes. I liked them enough, and noticed the brand had a version with pockets. I bought a pair specifically to wear on travel days. They’re high enough that you can throw your iPhone in one without having to take out your earbuds, but deep enough that you can tuck a passport in the other without worrying it’ll fall out as you sprint walk through the terminal. (I guess technically this makes them cargo leggings, but we don’t need to talk about that.) But I’ve found there’s so much more about them that makes them ideal for flying, specifically: a high waistband; a compression fit; an opaque fabric that’s more breathable than cotton but not at all sheer; a great ⅞-length option, which is perfect for transitions from colder to warmer climates, as I did leaving 40-degree Berlin for 85-degree Penang. Oh, and they’re durable—I had a pair from 2016 I just got rid of last month.

What I really love about this pair, specifically, is that it introduced me to this genre of leggings I really wasn’t acquainted with: ones designed for physical activity but intended to be worn elsewhere, too (hence the pockets). To be totally honest, I have my issues with Victoria’s Secret as a company—and the types of people it chooses and chooses not to feature. But at the very least, these leggings have opened my eyes to a type of silhouette I didn’t know existed, and that has changed what I look for when I’m in the market for new travel outfits. And in our athleisure-obsessed world, there are plenty of similar pairs to choose from.

Ahead, check out some of the pocketed leggings I’m eyeing for my next long-haul trip.

Lena Dunham Defended a 'Girls' Writer Accused of Raping a 17-Year-Old Girl

Actress Aurora Perrineau has filed a police report accusing Girls writer and producer Murray Miller of raping her in 2012, when she was 17 years old, according to a report by The Wrap published on Friday. After the news broke, Girls co-showrunners Lena Dunham and Jenni Konner released a statement defending Miller, explaining that they believe Perrineau’s allegations are false.

According to Miller’s attorney Don Walerstein, Perrineau’s lawyers contacted Miller several weeks ago asking for monetary damages for the alleged assault—something Perrineau’s mother denies. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Walerstein released a statement saying, “Mr. Miller categorically and vehemently denies Ms. Perrineau’s outrageous claims,” adding that Miller’s legal team has “overwhelming evidence directly contradicting these false and offensive claims.”

On Friday night, Denham and Konner sent a statement to The Hollywood Reporter denying Perrineau’s claims and saying they stand with Miller:

“During the windfall of deeply necessary accusations over the last few months in Hollywood, we have been thrilled to see so many women’s voices heard and dark experiences in this industry justified. It’s a hugely important time of change and, like every feminist in Hollywood and beyond, we celebrate. But during every time of change there are also incidences of the culture, in its enthusiasm and zeal, taking down the wrong targets. We believe, having worked closely with him for more than half a decade, that this is the case with Murray Miller. While our first instinct is to listen to every woman’s story, our insider knowledge of Murray’s situation makes us confident that sadly this accusation is one of the 3 percent of assault cases that are misreported every year. It is a true shame to add to that number, as outside of Hollywood women still struggle to be believed. We stand by Murray and this is all we’ll be saying about this issue.”

Dunham also tweeted what seems to be an indirect message of support for Murray, saying, “I believe in a lot of things but the first tenet of my politics is to hold up the people who have held me up, who have filled my world with love.”

The Girls creator has received quite a bit of backlash since releasing her statement. People are accusing her of hypocrisy, citing a tweet from August in which she stated, “Things women do lie about: what they ate for lunch. Things women don’t lie about: rape.”

According to Walerstein, “Mr. Miller looks forward to sharing all evidence and information with any and all authorities seeking the truth in this matter.”

Perrineau told The Wrap she’s unable to comment further about the alleged assault while the LAPD investigates.

Emma Stone Is Reportedly Dating 'SNL' Writer Dave McCary

Bad news, Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield “shippers”: Emma’s got a new boyfriend, and there’s no Spidey suit in sight.

The La La Land star is dating Saturday Night Live writer and segment director Dave McCary, Page Six reports. The pair reportedly met when Emma hosted the show last December, and they attended the premiere of his film, Brigsby Bear, together in June, though no one seemed to notice they were together.

McCary isn’t the only SNL staffer who may be making an appearance on some Hollywood red carpets this year: Ben Affleck and Scarlett Johansson are also dating people they met during their own appearances on the show. According to Page Six, hosting SNL is apparently the “new Tinder.” Ha!

Even though it looks like any rekindling of the Stone/Garfield romance is officially off the table, the pair, who met while filming The Amazing Spiderman in 2012 and dated for three years, have managed to maintain a strong friendship in the years since their breakup. In August, Emma watched Andrew star in a performance of Angels in America in London, which fans took to mean that they were getting back together. Even though that apparently wasn’t the case, Emma has been very clear about the fact that Andrew is still someone she “loves very much.”

In true ex goals fashion, the support goes both ways. Earlier this year, Andrew visibly teared up while watching Emma receive the Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance in La La Land. In the past, he’s called himself Emma’s “biggest fan as an artist” and said that he is “constantly inspired by how she handles and holds herself.” He also noted that it’s been “bliss” to watch the successes she’s achieved throughout her career, and that it has been “wonderful to have that kind of support for each other,” calling it “nothing but a beautiful thing.”

The good news is, this means at least Andrew Garfield is still on the market.

A 'Sex and the City' Writer Finally Explained Why Carrie Took the Ring From Charlotte

PHOTO: Richard Corkery/Getty Images

Any fan of “Sex and the City” knows Carrie Bradshaw lived a, shall we say, unrealistic lifestyle, especially for a woman who writes a single freelance newspaper column and lives in New York. She’s got a closet full of designer clothes and $385 shoes, eats every meal in a restaurant, and is a fan of $20 cocktails. She also had a fairly unrealistic New York City apartment, even if it was rent-controlled, that she almost lost and ended up keeping because she bullied her best friend into, essentially, giving her the money.

Now, 15 years after Carrie’s questionable life choices, Sex and the City writer Amy Harris has jumped to her defense. “If people were pissed and hated that Carrie did that, I’m OK with that,” the writer-producer told CNBC Make It, about the fact that the character accepted her divorced friend’s beloved engagement ring as a down payment. “Sarah Jessica and I talked about this: We believe [Carrie] paid [Charlotte] back. It was a loan, not a gift, so she did have to learn to save a little, to not spend everything on shoes and clothes.”

To be clear, there wasn’t any explicit indication that Carrie paid back her friend, but the lessons were apparently still there. “In my mind, she had to acknowledge all the shit choices she’d made and the fact that she hadn’t saved a penny and that was a big mistake, and so she was living with that,” Harris said. “Carrie learned a lesson. I do believe she sat down every month and wrote Charlotte a check.”

Even so, the Internet has been divided about this whole awkward money exchange for years—and according to Vulture, it was even named the number-one “most messed-up” thing about Sex and the City.

“People are funny about money,” said Harris, who went on to explain that even the writers weren’t even in agreement that this was the right way to handle the “Carrie needs cash” situation. “The biggest fight we ever got into in the writers’ room was about the money; that was a very big debate. Money is a tricky, complicated thing. Carrie spent it well on things she enjoyed, and luckily it all worked out well for her–I love happy endings.”

The real happy ending? Carrie got to keep her money right where she could see it: hanging in her closet.
