‘Wild’ Author Cheryl Strayed Knows the Secret to Finding Love After Loss

I really, really, really, really grieved the loss of my first marriage, even though I was the one who said, “I don’t want to be married anymore. Let’s end this.” But it was a different kind of grief than the grief I had for my mom. I’ll always grieve my mom. It’ll be a loss that will always be a hard one for me. The loss of my first marriage was a temporary grief; it was a temporary loss.

There shouldn’t be this timeline for grief. I think pathologizing pain is something that our culture does quite well. You should be sad if somebody you love deeply dies. That’s a normal response to a really sad, hard thing that happened. The first [step to healing] is to accept that sorrow is real and it’s going to take some time for it to lift. And then once it does lift a bit, to accept that—to accept that that’s not a sign of your lack of love, or commitment, or dedication to that person, but that it’s really that your loss is shifting into something a little deeper, where you’re starting to say, “I realize that this thing is true. This is a fact. My dad isn’t going to reappear like a magic genie and be there in my life again, ever again,” or, “My mom isn’t.”

We have to carry it—to say that the person is gone forever, but at the same time will always be present, so that in the absence of the beloved, there is a profound presence that we can make manifest in our lives by the things we do, and live, and believe, and say.

I love my kids the same way my mother loved me, and perhaps that’s the most powerful way I’ve carried her; I’ve carried that full-throttle-wild-abandon-imperfect-but-without-any-question-it’s-there love that I got from my mom, and I give it to my kids and they carry it forward. They’ll carry it onward. She’s alive in them; she’s alive in their spirits even though they never met her.

The power of vulnerability is also truly magic. Vulnerability, I’ve become convinced, is the way to get love. And of course, many of us decide not to be vulnerable because we’re afraid. But vulnerability is the way to get love, romantic or otherwise. The minute you’re the one who says, “I’m afraid right now,” or, “I’m missing my mom,” or, “I am in the midst of a divorce,” the minute you simply say what’s true, people open themselves up to you, and they offer you consolation—an essential connection.

I think that so much of loving well is about courage. It’s about telling the truth as soon as possible, as often as you can. That’s the secret to a good life, and that’s about vulnerability. Vulnerability is simply telling the truth about who you are, as often as you can, in any given situation. And nobody said any of this was going to be easy. If you’re looking for love again, there’s just no way around the fact that you have to be vulnerable in order to connect with others. Nobody’s going to love a cardboard-box version of you. Nobody wants to feel like they’re knocking at a closed door when they’re in a relationship with you. We want the real, juicy, meaty you. We want the tender stuff on the inside.

Kelly Clarkson Covered 'Shallow,' and Twitter Is Rightfully Going Wild

Kelly Clarkson is known for her incredible covers, but her latest might just be her best one yet. During her Meaning of Life tour show in Green Bay, Wisconsin on Friday, February 15, the singer took on Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper‘s smash-hit “Shallow” from their Oscar-nominated movie, A Star Is Born—and her rendition will give you straight-up chills.

Clarkson’s no stranger to an incredible live performance or a good cover—she’s covered everyone from Adele to Rihanna—but this performance was something else. Clarkson introduced the song by praising Gaga and sharing how much she appreciates her as an artist.

“I love artists. I know there’s a lot of competition always with artists in the industry, but there’s a lot of us that just dig each other and really get inspired by each other and what they’re doing,” she told the audience. “And this chick is amazing. We’re really different, but at the same time, we’re really similar in the fact that she just loves music, and that’s why she’s doing what she’s doing.”

Clarkson then told the crowd a story about the time Gaga wrote Clarkson a handwritten letter to thank her for performing together. “She was the nicest human being ever. Her name is Lady Gaga,” she said. “It’s so cool to know that someone that talented is so nice.”

Twitter is obviously going nuts over her rendition, with some calling it their favorite “Shallow” cover.

Meanwhile, others called it a “holy experience” and a “masterpiece.”

“Nothing is better than a @kelly_clarkson cover,” one person tweeted.

“Been needing a good Shallow cover song in my life and @kelly_clarkson did it. I think u did @ladygaga justice,” another wrote.

“Her version makes me fall in love with this song even more,” another fan added.

Safe to say we now have two versions of the hit to play on loop.

Colton's First *Bachelor* Trailer Is Here, and It's Wild

The first trailer for Colton Underwood’s season of The Bachelor is here, and guess what everyone has on their minds? His virginity.

This shouldn’t surprise anyone. Colton’s sex life was a major plot point on both Becca Kufrin’s season of The Bachelorette and Bachelor in Paradise. Plus, the first poster for his Bachelor tenure literally uses the tagline, “What does he have to lose?” For some reason, people are bewildered this hot 26-year-old guy could be a virgin.

That carries on to the trailer, as well. The word “virgin” is said four times by the trailer’s 40-second mark, which is just…wild. “I have not dated a virgin since I was 12,” one of the female contestants says. “I am a virgin,” Colton says, as if we could forget.

“You could lose your virginity this week,” Chris Harrison says in his very serious Chris Harrison voice. The greatest virgin reference, though, is when one of the women exclaims, “Could Colton lose his virginity in Singapore? Maybe!” Hey! Did you guys know Colton is a virgin?

Watch the trailer for yourself, below:

Of course, there is more drama outside Colton’s V-card. Your standard Bachelor hijinks are also here. The women cry and accuse each other of talking smack. Colton cries. Chris Harrison becomes gobsmacked at one point and says this season is incredibly dramatic. We’ve seen all this before, and it’s addicting every time.

What I want to know, though, is why Colton becomes so agitated at one point that he storms away and then jumps over a tall fence. Did someone say the word “virgin” one too many times?

Colton’s season of The Bachelor premieres Monday, January 7 at 8 P.M. ET on ABC.

Everything You Need to Know About Wild Fable, Target's Newest Fashion Brand

Target has left few aesthetic stones unturned since announcing that it would revamp its apparel assortment with all-new in-house brands: You have your athleisure covered by JoyLab, your denim covered by Universal Thread, your hero pieces covered by A New Day…and now there’s Wild Fable, a trend-focused collection first announced back in May that’s aimed at young shoppers. And after a summer of anticipation (and vague descriptors), we finally have our first look at what Target’s latest design venture looks like—and it’s nothing like what you’ve seen so far.

Available in stores and online on Friday, August 3, Wild Fable debuts with plenty of late-summer staples, infused with nineties touches: ribbed camis, plush corduroy minidresses, reconstructed denim shirts, and Clueless-esque plaid skirts…. According to Mark Tritton, Target’s executive vice president and chief merchandising officer, the label is “really amping up [Target’s style] credentials and connecting more definitively to [the shopper’s] wants and likes… It’s got a different attitude than what we’ve done before.” Tritton explains how the retailer spoke with 1,000 customers to nail the exact vibe that shoppers wanted next, and these conversations were key to determining which pieces would make Wild Fable’s roster. “I think the guest decides now. I think they’re in charge more than ever,” he tells Glamour.

“While we had some great brands and some great offers, we felt there was a better way to be more authentic and connect with [millennials and Gen-Z], and use a better voice to bring a fresh approach in how we speak to her and him and them,” Tritton says of Wild Fable’s target audience. “We see them as a wide emerging space, as a guest that says, ‘There’s a lifetime value in this.’ They come to us as kids, and they love Target—they’re coming to us for key areas like beauty, and we want to build that momentum with them and that connection point and understand them more.”

Wild Fable’s look feels almost like a punk-chic departure from Target’s existing wares, but it shares the accessible price point of all other in-house lines: Items start at $3.99 and max out at $39.99. It’s also size-inclusive, with all pieces available in sizes 0 through 26W. “The size inclusive term for us is almost benign now—both in the men’s line and the women’s line, there’s that sense of democracy: Come, shop, you decide,” Tritton explains. “We’re not going to come and tell you where you should and where you shouldn’t go—I think those days are rightfully gone.”

Ahead of Wild Fable’s formal launch, take a sneak peak at seven key looks from the collection. Trust: You’ll want have your shopping list ready when it finally goes live.
