Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper Perform 'Shallow' at the Oscars 2019

Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper took the stage at the 2019 Oscars on Sunday night, February 24, to perform their hit song “Shallow” from A Star Is Born—and they didn’t disappoint. The powerful tune, which took home the Oscar for Best Original Song, became an instant hit last fall, reaching the the top five on Billboard‘s Hot 100. It’s without a doubt a standout track in A Star Is Born—and that’s saying something, given the sheer amount of great music moments in the movie.

Tonight’s performance was another incredible moment. Gaga and Cooper kept this performance of “Shallow” simple. They let their incredible vocals do the talking, with Gaga adding some dramatic accents on the piano. The “AHHHAHHHAHHHAH” is still so killer.

Check out the performance for yourself, below:

Twitter is, obviously, living for Gaga and Cooper’s sweet rendition:

“Shallow” has had quite the awards season run, winning multiple Grammys as well as the Golden Globe for Best Original Song. During her one of her acceptance speeches for “Shallow” at the Grammys, Lady Gaga made an important statement about mental health.

“I’m so proud to be a part of a movie that addresses mental health issues,” she said. “They’re so important. And a lot of artists deal with that, and we’ve got to take care of each other. So if you see somebody that’s hurting, don’t look away. And if you’re hurting, even though it might be hard, try to find that bravery within yourself to dive deep and go tell somebody and take them up in your head with you.”

Several celebrities have covered “Shallow” since A Star Is Born came out in October, including Kate Hudson, Nick Jonas, and, most notably, Kelly Clarkson. Her rendition of the song basically broke the Internet two weeks ago. “This chick is amazing,” Clarkson said about Gaga before performing her cover. “We’re really different, but at the same time, we’re really similar in the fact that she just loves music, and that’s why she’s doing what she’s doing.”

Last week, news broke Gaga and talent agent Christian Carino broke up after two years of dating—and just a few months after announcing their engagement. “It just didn’t work out. Relationships sometimes end,” a representative for Gaga told People magazine. “There’s no long, dramatic story.”

9 'Shallow' Covers You Need to Hear Right Now

If you haven’t cried at least once to Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s song “Shallow,” then you don’t have a heart. I’m kidding, but the tune, which appears in their movie A Star Is Born and earned an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song, is full of emotion, power, and soul. So much so that it’s spawned dozens and dozens of covers—a few by some very famous people. Granted, most of the renditions are from Gaga’s legion of Little Monsters, but a few A-listers have put their paws up for “Shallow.”

From Kelly Clarkson to Lea Michele, let’s have a look at just a few of the celebrities who are off the deep end for this song.

The best way to survive a workout? Belting “Shallow” the entire time, apparently. Seriously, though, Kate Hudson can sing—which, if you’ve seen Nine, you already knew that.

Jonas posted his cover of “Shallow” to Instagram on Friday, February 22 (uploaded by Priyanka Chopra, of course). It’s soft and subtle, relying only on Jonas’ muted guitar strums and his even more muted vocals. Have a listen for yourself, below.

The 17-year-old newcomer was one of 30,000 people to audition for Steven Spielberg’s remake of West Side Story. She ultimately landed the role of Maria, which is when the Internet discovered her stunning cover of “Shallow.” Watch 30 seconds of it, and you’ll see why Spielberg jumped at the chance to cast her.

Tsui is known for his YouTube covers, but his take on “Shallow” truly raises the bar. He tackles both the Gaga and Cooper parts here with style and aplomb, and his sugary vocals give the song a poppier vibe than what’s done in A Star Is Born.

The only thing more beautiful than Clarkson’s cover of “Shallow” is how she talked about Gaga before performing it. “I love artists. I know there’s a lot of competition always with artists in the industry, but there’s a lot of us that just dig each other and really get inspired by each other and what they’re doing,” she said. “And this chick is amazing. We’re really different, but at the same time, we’re really similar in the fact that she just loves music, and that’s why she’s doing what she’s doing.”

Michele was one of the first celebrities to post about her love for A Star Is Born in October, so it’s only fitting she and Darren Criss covered the song on their tour. “Tonight.. Shallow. This was my dream,” Michele tweeted about her performance, which she and Criss repeated several times on tour. Their vocals are certainly dream-like.

OK, so this is technically a parody, but it still counts. Corden and Keys riffed off “Shallow” as a way to tee up her Grammys-hosting gig, and the result is pure hilarity. And incredible vocals, of course. I mean, this is Alicia Keys.

Why, yes, it is possible to do a cover of your own song. Gaga’s arrangement of “Shallow” at the 2019 Grammys is completely different than how she sang it in A Star Is Born. In lieu of a stripped-down look and vocals, Gaga went full-on glam-pop, incorporating many of the elements that made her a pop phenomenon back in 2008.

We couldn’t do this list without including the first time Gaga and Cooper reprised “Shallow” outside of the movie. It happened in late January during Gaga’s Vegas residency, Enigma. “Shallow” is always the encore, but fans (and, let’s face it, the world) received a special treat that particular evening. If anything, this performance gave us so many great memes.

Kelly Clarkson Covered 'Shallow,' and Twitter Is Rightfully Going Wild

Kelly Clarkson is known for her incredible covers, but her latest might just be her best one yet. During her Meaning of Life tour show in Green Bay, Wisconsin on Friday, February 15, the singer took on Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper‘s smash-hit “Shallow” from their Oscar-nominated movie, A Star Is Born—and her rendition will give you straight-up chills.

Clarkson’s no stranger to an incredible live performance or a good cover—she’s covered everyone from Adele to Rihanna—but this performance was something else. Clarkson introduced the song by praising Gaga and sharing how much she appreciates her as an artist.

“I love artists. I know there’s a lot of competition always with artists in the industry, but there’s a lot of us that just dig each other and really get inspired by each other and what they’re doing,” she told the audience. “And this chick is amazing. We’re really different, but at the same time, we’re really similar in the fact that she just loves music, and that’s why she’s doing what she’s doing.”

Clarkson then told the crowd a story about the time Gaga wrote Clarkson a handwritten letter to thank her for performing together. “She was the nicest human being ever. Her name is Lady Gaga,” she said. “It’s so cool to know that someone that talented is so nice.”

Twitter is obviously going nuts over her rendition, with some calling it their favorite “Shallow” cover.

Meanwhile, others called it a “holy experience” and a “masterpiece.”

“Nothing is better than a @kelly_clarkson cover,” one person tweeted.

“Been needing a good Shallow cover song in my life and @kelly_clarkson did it. I think u did @ladygaga justice,” another wrote.

“Her version makes me fall in love with this song even more,” another fan added.

Safe to say we now have two versions of the hit to play on loop.

Watch Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper Reunite Onstage to Perform 'Shallow'

Bradley Cooper was probably pretty bummed earlier this week when the Oscar nominations were announced and his name was not on the list of those contending for Best Director. Frankly, I’m not sure what the Academy was thinking because, to me, A Star Is Born is pretty darn perfect. (He did pick up nominations in the acting and screenplay categories, so that does help.)

But over the weekend, Cooper received what many might call an even greater honor: He performed live with his ASIB co-star and fellow Oscar nominee Lady Gaga at her Las Vegas show, Enigma. Gaga brought Cooper onstage to perform their mega-hit “Shallow,” and the crowd obviously went nuts over seeing Jackson and Ally Maine reunited on stage once again.

While I might personally have been disappointed that Cooper wasn’t hiding long, greasy Jackson hair under his baseball cap, he seemed pretty comfortable on stage save a few sound glitches. Ever the pro, Gaga said, “I even got you in-ears,” referring to the monitors that many performers wear during live performances to hear the music. Cooper couldn’t hear anything at first, but once the sound crew got things sorted, he launched into those famous first lyrics, “Tell me something, girl…” and I was instantly transported back to the fictional love story of Jackson and Ally. He certainly hasn’t lost his voice since they finished the film, and Gaga, of course, sounds incredible. Cooper even busted out some vintage Jackson Maine guitar moves as Gaga moved into that iconic “Shallow” wail.

Honestly, I got chills and maybe a little misty-eyed. The chemistry is so real, y’all. Watch for yourselves below and try not to cry.

Here’s hoping these two hit the stage together again at the Oscars on February 24—”Shallow” is nominated for Best Song, after all.
