Selena Gomez Just Revealed Some Details About Taylor Swift's New Album

Taylor Swift’s upcoming album, Reputation, is shrouded in secrecy. From the three singles she’s released so far—”Look What You Made Me Do,” “Ready for It?,” and “Gorgeous”—we know it’s her most emotionally charged effort yet, but that’s about it. The fans who’ve attended Swift’s Reputation secret listening sessions can’t stop raving about the record, but how much of an indicator is that? They’re stans. Swift could Auto-Tune a burp and they’d say, “Bravo! Grammy! So many layers!” (No shade to them, either. I do the same thing with Madonna.)

But Swift’s bestie Selena Gomez offered some new tea about Reputation in a recent interview with Zane Lowe. The radio DJ asked Gomez if Reputation is “incredible,” and here’s what she had to say:

“Would you expect anything less? It’s so inspiring. It’s really cool
to surround yourself with people and be involved with people who are
inspiring and changing the way they dictate what they love, whether
it’s acting or music, and she’s one of those people who will continue
to do that.”

At first, this doesn’t seem like much. Gomez is one of Swift’s good friends, so of course her review of Reputation is positive. But read between the lines a little bit: Gomez implies that on Reputation Swift “changes the way she dictates what she loves.” That’s a sign we have a major reinvention on our hands. Sonically, we heard this with “Look What You Made Me Do,” but what if there are other changes in store? Perhaps the record is more diverse than we thought. The three songs out right now are all pretty much electronic pop, but maybe the others are different.

Gomez added that Swift personally played the record for her (natch) and that it’s “everything you would want and more.”

“I obviously love her so much, and I want her to do what she does. She’s killing it,” she said. “So, [I’m] very proud, and obviously a major fan.”

Fans Think Taylor Swift's Being Nude in the '…Ready for It?' Video Is a Dig at Kanye West

Taylor Swift released a teaser for her “…Ready for It?” music video yesterday, and it looks amazing. From the 10 seconds we saw, it appears Swift plays some kind of neon, crime-fighting robot. Her eyes glow in the dark at one point. Lightning bolts shoot out of her hands. Oh, and she appears to be naked.

That last tidbit, naturally, sent the Internet into a tailspin. (Although it really shouldn’t have. Naked people aren’t a big deal, but here we are.) Granted, Swift’s nudity isn’t confirmed, but it sure looks like she’s sporting her birthday suit while battling these futuristic bad guys. Why is she naked, though? Fans have been chattering about this for the past 24 hours, and one theory is dominating the conversation: Kanye West.

The Internet seems to think Swift’s nudity is a not-so-subtle dig at West’s “Famous” video, in which a Swift mannequin lies next to him…completely naked. Remember when that happened?

“IS IT JUST ME OR DID EVERYBODY ELSE REALIZE THAT TAYLOR PUTTING ON A BODY SUIT AND LOOKING NAKED IS HER WAY OF DISSING KANYE & HIS FAMOUS MV,” one fan tweeted shortly after the “…Ready for It?” teaser dropped. “Remember when Kanye had that ‘naked’ Taylor for famous? She’s turning it back with android naked Taylor for#ReadyForItMusicVideo,” wrote another. Here are a few more tweets that allude to the same theory:

So is this true? It’s certainly possible. Swift’s Reputation era, thus far, has been all about firing back at the negative stories and feuds that followed her in 2016. Swiping West by stripping down perfectly aligns with that theme. We’ll probably never know for sure, though—Swift isn’t really doing press for this album—so let the theorizing continue.

A Popular Theory About Taylor Swift's Next Song Just Got Debunked

With Reputation less than a month away, Taylor Swift fans are freaking out. Actually, they’ve been freaking out for a while—decoding Swift’s new songs, music videos, and social media moves like detectives. Swifties take every action their queen makes as some kind of indication of music to come—which is why they had a full-on conniption about a commercial she filmed for UPS last month. The stuttery, electronic music playing in the background of it, when slowed down, sounds like a new single from Swift called “Rip Off the Page.” The person singing the track sounds a lot like Swift, and it fits the current EDM aesthetic she’s going for. Fans were convinced Swift sneakily embedded this song into the commercial just for them to decode.

But this isn’t true. A person on Reddit did a little digging and discovered the music in the UPS commercial is actually just generic instrumentation. They pointed to a Facebook video, which uses the exact same music, as evidence. Check it out for yourself, below:

Before you get disappointed, though, another Reddit user suggested it’s possible this video ripped this music from Swift’s UPS video. “She thinks about every detail, and I doubt that as a singer she’d have someone else’s song in the background of a commercial she’s a huge part of,” they wrote.

However, this is unlikely, because the music actually dates back to 2009—from a video called “Scratch Massive – Ghost in the Subway.” Listen to it, below. You’ll hear the similarities.

Sorry, Swifties, it looks like y’all got this wrong. But there’s a silver lining: This means Swift’s new single is still a mystery. It could be anything, and half the fun of being a fan is wondering what your fave will do next.

Taylor Swift's Music Video Director Reveals the Meaning Behind 'Old Taylor'

PHOTO: Big Machine Records

If you have a pulse, you’ve undoubtedly heard Taylor Swift’s new song “Look What You Made Me Do,” in which she declares the “Old Taylor” is dead. The meaning behind this lyric is still a mystery. Fans originally thought it meant Swift was abandoning her old, smiley personality, but that went out the window when she appeared in an AT&T ad filled with cuddly cats and cookie dough. Perhaps the line is directed at the media: The “Old Taylor” sat back and ignored tabloids, but “New Taylor” is firing back in the form of an album where half her face is filled with newspaper print on the cover. Maybe it means she’s no longer going to wear her hair in loose curls.

Or maybe “Old Taylor” doesn’t mean anything at all—that’s what Joseph Kahn sort of suggests in his new interview with Variety. The director, who helmed the “Look What You Made Me Do” video, says that Swift is “consistent” in who she is—which basically means “Old Taylor” and “New Taylor” are the same.

“Taylor is Taylor,” Kahn said. “She’s so consistent in who she is. Her imaging may be changing depending on what the thematics of the art is that she’s producing, [but] the person remains the same. There’s a core person there that’s really a fantastic human being.”

In other words, Swift is doing what dozens of pop artists do every few years: She’s reinventing. This doesn’t mean she’s altering herself: She’s just adapting her public image to fit the story she’s telling. Madonna and Rihanna are pros at this—and now so is Swift. Her former self isn’t dead—just her former image.

It’s interesting many people think Swift is literally changing herself with this new music, like she’s “method singing” or something. This is a phenomenon I’ve noticed with female performers: Oftentimes, people can’t separate the work from the artist. Their public personas and real lives are inextricably linked, which is very frustrating. Female artists should be able to express themselves creatively without the world thinking there’s trouble or change in their personal lives. Sometimes, it really isn’t that deep.

Taylor Swift's Guitars in Her New Ad Might Offer Clues About 'Reputation'

PHOTO: taylorswift13/Twitter

Taylor Swift certainly knows how to build anticipation. Her upcoming album, Reputation, won’t be out for another two months (on November 10, if you want to mark your calendar), but her first two singles from it have already launched 1,000 fan theories from Swifties unwilling to let mere music keep them occupied. These intrepid pop-culture detectives have been looking for clues to the track list everywhere, even in a minute-long ad for AT&T that stars Swift and a few iconic guitars.

The ad features Swift in the studio getting ready, it’s implied, to record some music for her upcoming album. And Swift fans, who were definitely rock stars at those Highlights “Find the Difference” puzzles, have noticed (and shared their observations on Tumblr) that in the back of the studio there are a few of Swift’s famous guitars from various stages of her career—from the brown acoustic guitar of her early days to the red electric ax more connected to her pop transformation. The appearance of the guitars, coupled with the line up of “ex” Taylors at the end of the “Look What You Made Me Do” video, have lead some fans to believe the tracks on Reputation might all correspond to those ghosts of Taylor past.

The AT&T video also features Swift playing a new white acoustic guitar, giving Swifties hope that the album will feature at least one acoustic track, despite the fact that the “new” Taylor seems to be in love with beats that are better to work out to than they are a soundtrack for long periods of staring into the middle distance. There’s also some speculation that the “possible” acoustic song could be the much mythologized (and possibly nonexistent), 10-minute-long version of “All Too Well” off of Red.

If you need more Reputation speculations, theories, and predictions to occupy your days as you count down to the release, there’s no shortage, from snake-y connections to an album split between the old Taylor Swift and the new. So break out your headphones and your oversize magnifying glass. Those videos aren’t going to analyze themselves.

Taylor Swift's Video Director Says Beyoncé Copied 'Bad Blood,' but Where Are the Receipts?

I love Joseph Kahn‘s music videos. If you’re unfamiliar with his work, he’s helmed some of the most important pop clips in history—Britney Spears’ “Toxic,” Lady Gaga’s “LoveGame,” and all the best videos from Taylor Swift’s 1989 album. He also directed Swift’s most recent video, “Look What You Made Me Do.” The man is talented—insanely talented. The “Womanizer” video is literally why I’m gay.

But goddamnit, Kahn’s talking is getting in the way of my love for his videos. First, he tweeted about how cultural appropriation is “hot” and actually not bad at all. Then, he came for the BeyHive, which is just a fundamental mistake in 2017. And now he’s pitting Swift and Beyoncé against each other for no reason at all.

Let’s back up: When Swift teased her “Look What You Made Me Do” video before the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards, people started saying she ripped off Beyoncé’s Formation era. Of course, the comparisons went away after Swift dropped the full video. Truthfully, they’re not really that similar—which Kahn said in a (very rational) tweet right before the video was released.

His latest comments about the situation, however, are not rational. Instead of putting the Bey vs. Taylor fire out for good, Kahn chose to say this in his recent interview with the Los Angeles Times:

“[‘Look What You Made Me Do’ is] not ‘Formation’ at all. They try to say she’s wearing a black
crop top and Beyoncé wore a black crop top. But they don’t realize in
2015 in ‘Bad Blood,’ Taylor Swift was wearing a black crop top. I
really do think, by the way, that Beyoncé copied ‘Bad Blood.’”

Um, what? Beyoncé copied the “Bad Blood” video? How? When? Hold up, let me conduct a thorough receipt investigation:

Still looking. Stand by.

Almost done.

There are none. At no point in Beyoncé’s Lemonade did she throw on a red wig and recruit a group of Victoria’s Secret models to wage an intergalactic war against Selena Gomez’s bob. She didn’t wear latex or knee-high boots and stomp around while Lena Dunham smoked a cigar. She didn’t have a kiki with three Hailee Steinfelds. Where is Kahn getting his info? Taylor Swift Fan Theory Tumblr?

Honestly, this is all just so dumb. Swift and Kahn silenced the Beyoncé copycat haters when they released the “Look What You Made Me Do” clip in full. The video is 100 percent original—and good! I watch it 20 times a day, minimum. The work speaks for itself.

However, these quotes will spark another war between the fandoms—and we’re creating more drama between two female artists where there really isn’t any. The criticisms of Swift’s new video were valid when we only had a five-second preview of it, but they’re not anymore. And neither is the notion that Beyoncé’s main inspiration for Lemonade was a nunchucks-wielding Cara Delevingne. Let’s not make any more bad blood.
