Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Subtly Honored Princess Diana in Their Royal Wedding Portraits


Meghan Markle and Prince Harry paid tribute to Princess Diana in several ways on their royal wedding day. From the flowers in Markle’s wedding bouquet to the ring she wore to the reception, Princess Diana was very much a part of the couple’s special day.

And she even made an appearance in Markle and Prince Harry’s official wedding portraits—well, subtly. Both People magazine and The Business Insider confirm that the couch Prince Harry’s sitting on for the photos is the exact same couch Princess Diana sat on for Harry’s christening pics in 1984.

It’s a pretty unmistakable couch, if we’re being honest. The plush piece of furniture is forrest green with bright gold handles and legs. Even with all the children in Markle and Prince Harry’s photso, you can still tell it’s the same couch. You can see it from a mile away.

Markle and Prince Harry first talked about Princess Diana in their engagement interview from November. Prince Harry included some of his mother’s stones in Markle’s engagement ring—a move that meant so much to the former Suits star.

“Everything about Harry’s thoughtfulness and the inclusion of [the diamonds] and not being able to meet his mom…. it’s important for me to know she’s a part of this with us,” Markle said. “I’m able to somehow know her through him…. To be able to have this [ring]—which links where[he] comes from—it’s perfect.”

Prince Harry added that he thinks Markle and his mother would be “thick as thieves.” “She’d be over the moon [about our relationship], jumping up and down. So excited for me,” he said. “She would’ve been best friends with Meghan. It’s days like this where I miss having her around. I’m sure she’s with us.”

Nicole Kidman Got Subtly Political While Accepting Her 'Glamour' Women of the Year Award


When director Sofia Coppola took the stage to introduce a Glamour Women of the Year honoree and friend (whom she directed in this year’s “The Beguiled”), she described her as “one of the great classic actresses of our era.” Obviously, she was talking about Nicole Kidman. Name a more iconic duo, we’ll wait.

Already an Oscar winner, Kidman won an Emmy this year for her wrenching portrayal as a victim of domestic abuse in “Big Little Lies,” in addition to being a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador.

Upon going up to accept her award, she noted that Coppola was “an example to all of you who want to be female directors that you can do it. Sofia is female power.” And then she turned the spotlight on everyone else in the room and watching at home: “Let’s use this moment to celebrate what makes us, us.” She also gave a touching tribute to her husband Keith Urban, acknowledging that having a strong man on your side can be an asset as good as any other. “As much as I’m a strong woman, I need help and I need support.”

But she ended the night urging people not to seek comfort solely with people who are too much like us. “I truly believe that we must share the good love that we receive whenever we see it’s needed,” she said. “It’s about building bridges, because bridges bring about new adventures and change, and that’s what we need—change.”

Thank you, Glamour, for this wonderful honor.  This has been the most
extraordinary year. I use that word extraordinary in all of its
meanings.  We’re in uncharted waters.

But as we take tonight to celebrate—and I bow down to the other
honorees for their phenomenal contributions to art, culture,
exploration, human rights —I want to take a moment to say this is a
celebration of us.  What makes us us.

In my household growing up, everyone was equal.  Maybe it was because
it was a house full of scientists and academics. Or because it was the
’70s in Australia and it was a time of demonstration and change. I had
a feminist mother, but I also had a father who was supportive and
loving. It was so much about union and support. I was very fortunate
to be the recipient of these parents – supportive, empowering,
encouraging. That was their love…what we call in my home now good
love. And that is something I want to pass along to not just my own
children, but to those around me.

I’m a sister, I’m a mother, daughter, I’m a wife, I’m a career
woman…I’m a mother to four loving children, daughter of a formidable
mother and father and wife of a truly good man.  It is who I am, why
I’m standing here tonight. And I am aware that not everybody has been
as lucky as I have been.

As much as we gravitate, with all of this going on in the world, to a
safe place, to the people most like us—the people whose gender,
sexuality, race or politics we share—I’m convinced the galvanization
of all of us together is essential. I truly believe we must share the
good love wherever we see it’s needed.

One of the first things I learned in my work with UN Women to support women survivors of
violence is how critical the solidarity of others is. The feeling that
they are not alone. That there is help. So let’s speak out. Let’s
offer our support and create change. It is about building bridges.
Bridges bring understanding, empathy, bring change…

I feel deeply indebted to the people in my life who made me, me.  It
has led me to this point, to this year. To my life and my purpose in
life.  I suppose what I want to say is thank you.  Thank you for
supporting and embracing me, for allowing me to fail and to fall down
and get back up, brush off my knees, even if they’re bloodied and
fly. Thank you for the good love.  I promise to pass it on.

Taylor Swift Subtly References Joe Alwyn in Her 'Ready for It' Music Video


There’s a lot to unpack in the “Ready for It” video that Taylor Swift dropped last night. The storyline, even after several viewings, is still unclear. We know Swift plays some kind of animatronic cyborg; she skulks around a futuristic-looking basement menacingly, fiddles with a neon crystal ball, and gets into a fight with herself at one point. But how these ideas are connected to a song seemingly about a relationship is still a mystery.

One thing that’s clear, though, is the reference she makes to her boyfriend, Joe Alwyn, at the top of the video. It happens around the 16-second mark: The numbers 89 and 91 are spray-painted on the wall behind Swift. The first is an obvious self-reference—Swift, as we all know by now, was born in 1989—and the second is most likely a nod to Alwyn, whose birthday is February 21, 1991. Take a look at the numbers for yourself, below:

There’s one more 1989 reference you might’ve missed in the video, too. The phrase “The Year of the Snake” appears in Chinese toward the beginning of the video. Swift was infamously branded as a “snake” last year after that whole Kim Kardashian Snapchat drama. She’s since reclaimed that image, and she does it again here…because 1989 is the Year of the Snake. Connections!

It’s no surprise Swift nodded to Alwyn in this video. Most fans think “Ready for It” is about the English actor, whom Swift has been dating for more than a year. The lyrics make several not-so-subtle references to him. “Younger than my exes, but he acts like such a man,” Swift sings at one point. (Alwyn is 26—noticeably younger than her last two boyfriends, Calvin Harris and Tom Hiddleston.) The vibe of the tune also indicates a loose Alwyn theme: It’s about the giddy, bubbly stages of a new relationship.

“Ready for It” is the second song Swift’s released from her new album, Reputation. She dropped the first, “Look What You Made Me Do,” in late August, and the third (“Gorgeous”) just last week. The album is due out November 10.
