The Best Skin Care Products Under $20, According to Pros

It can feel like the only way to get dewy, gorgeous skin is to drop your entire paycheck on the newest and fanciest creams, cleansers, and lotions. This couldn’t be further from the truth. While there definitely are some moisturizers and eye creams we’d be willing to throw down some serious cash for (see everything here), the good news is that it’s entirely possible to get amazing skin without going into debt, and we have proof. We polled our staffers to have them share their top won’t-break-the-bank products that truly work. From the gentlest cleanser out there to a best-selling face mask, not one of these finds is over $20, and each one occupies a space in our editors’ (admittedly cramped) bathrooms. Here’s to your skin—and your budget.

The Best New Instagram Makeup and Skin Care Products of 2017

  • <img src=”https://media.glamour.com/photos/5a1de34699af577444a4bc47/master/pass/fenty-lipsticks.jpg” alt=”Fenty Beauty Stunna Lip Paint, $24″/>

Not a week passes that we don’t wonder what will come from Fenty Beauty. First, it was the foundation that sold out (and sold out, and sold out), thanks to its range of 40 shades. Then the glitter-filled Galaxy holiday collection, and now, the Stunna Lip Paint that’s turned the Internet upside down. A true red, we can personally vouch: It really does look incredible on everyone.

As the unofficial master of Internet Beauty™, of course Huda Kattan knows what the people want. While the Huda Beauty foundations were quick to sell out, we rarely open Instagram without seeing the Desert Dusk palette’s mix of rosy, wearable shades.

  • <img src=”https://media.glamour.com/photos/5a1de33be0e79f10c219e19e/master/pass/farsali-highlighter.jpg” alt=”Farsali Jelly Beam Illuminator/Highlighter, $40″/>

As we close out the year, we feel confident saying there’s never been a time when more stuff jiggled (and foamed, speaking of weird textures). Who’s complaining, though? The only thing better than sticking your finger in this Farsali jelly is tilting your face back and forth to watch it shine.

  • <img src=”https://media.glamour.com/photos/59a44c3d27c2f9352e0159bd/master/pass/kkw-contour-instagram.jpg” alt=”KKW Beauty Creme Contour and Highlight Kit, $48″/>

And in the polar opposite aesthetic, the Internet went bananas for Kim Kardashian’s first going-it-alone beauty product. Available in four sets, the creamy contour sticks sold out in two and half hours. No small feat—they were $48.

  • <img src=”https://media.glamour.com/photos/5a1de33bae265d02ef4feb27/master/pass/juvia-place-palette.jpg” alt=”Juvia’s Place Nubian Eyeshadow Palette, $15″/>

At first glance, this palette looks much like any other palette. But the under-the-radar brand has garnered a rabid following, because its shadows come packed with pigments so powerful, they read bright on every single skin tone.

If you’re not following the Twitter account Makeup for WOC, you’re missing out on a world of great product recommendations. The woman behind the account, who goes by Tiara, took her expertise and paired with MTF Cosmetics to create a highlighter custom tailored for deep skin tones. Unsurprisingly, it promptly sold out.

As a YouTube personality, Jaclyn Hill‘s got to deliver what people want with her own, original spin. For her mega-hyped collaboration with Morphe, Hill came up with a set of burnished reds, yellows, and blues that had just about everyone clicking “buy” (and all of the brands following suit). The only problem? Getting your hands on one to test IRL was next to impossible. Now it’s available in Ulta stores and online—along with the rest of Morphe’s favorite palettes and brushes. Ready your points.

Eighties babies will get the reference right away, but for the rest: Lime Crime came out with a collection of three palettes inspired by Polly Pockets. The real question is will there soon be a line of P.P. clothing and accessories to match? Stranger things have happened.

  • <img src=”https://media.glamour.com/photos/59a578da22e1ec7be1970613/master/pass/storybook-cosmetics-lipsticks-dragon-instagram.jpg” alt=”Storybook Cosmetics Dragon Lipsticks“/>

Yeah, we’ll take literally any Game of Thrones–channeling merch we can get these days. Especially when it looks like these gorgeous dragon-inspired lipsticks, coming in three different metal colorways. The brand is quick to note that these are original creations, not sponsored or endorsed by any specific HBO entity, but that doesn’t mean they’re any less pretty. They were slated to go on sale this fall, but thanks to a revamp, Storybook Cosmetics says that it’s hoping to have them out by the holidays—but that release date might turn into early next year.

  • <img src=”https://media.glamour.com/photos/5a1f199ec93a350fbef531f8/master/pass/too-faced-glow-job.jpg” alt=”Too Faced’s Glitter Peel-Off Mask, $42 “/>

If Too Faced does a mask, it’s going to be major. Founder Jerrod Blandino teased a glimpse of this sparkly concoction on his Instagram a few months ago, and the crowds went wild. And now that the mask has made its social media debut ahead of it widespread release in early 2018, we can all rest easy: the new Glow Job mask fully meets our expectations. Gloriously extra as ever, the brand infused the formula with real gold to exfoliate and brighten your skin (and get an Instagram in the process).

You didn’t think Too Faced was the only one to break the Internet with this concept, did you? Welcome to 2017, where we are at peak glitter and everyone is a 13-year-old girl. Not that we’re mad at it. This one features GlamGlow’s signature GravityMud technology, which makes your skin firmer and softer. The glitter floats suspended in the formula, too, so it doesn’t aggravate your skin.

Just take it in. Every single time I see a photo of the Naked Heat palette, I wonder why I’m not currently wearing the Naked Heat palette. Every single time, I have no answer, other than that I like variety (and eh, I’m lazy). It’s the eyeshadow-rut cure-all.

  • <img src=”https://media.glamour.com/photos/59a445d15fdabb483b05c6c6/master/pass/pat-mcgrath-lipsticks-instagram-1.jpg” alt=”Pat McGrath Labs MatteTrance Lipstick, $38″/>

If you talk about Pat McGrath, it’s an unspoken rule that you have to preface her name with “legendary.” Because the makeup artist is just that—she dominates Fashion Weeks all over the world with her insane makeup skills, and her new line brings that magic to your vanity. Her lipsticks especially were a big-ticket drop, with a formula that feels like pure velvet.

  • <img src=”https://media.glamour.com/photos/59a445cf12565a2d1b2a50e9/master/pass/huda-beauty-strobe-instagram.jpg” alt=”Huda Beauty Lip Strobes, $18″/>

With her frankly absurd 21.2 million followers, again, Huda Kattan knows what the people want. And earlier this year, that was Lip Strobes: Both a topper and stand-alone lip look, the metallic glosses were at the front of the metallic trend and basically brought gloss back.

  • <img src=”https://media.glamour.com/photos/59a4898329ac1f7400da9d8b/master/pass/storybook-cosmetics-brushes-instagram.jpg” alt=”Storybook Cosmetics What’s in a Name Rose Brushes, $55″/>

The brand hit it big with its Harry Potter-esque palette last year, and it’s kept up the winning streak with its brush collections and the aforementioned dragon lipsticks (they know what the people want). Among the concepts are wands, quills, and arrows, but the brush set is almost too pretty to believe.

  • <img src=”https://media.glamour.com/photos/59a4473e5fdabb483b05c6ca/master/pass/rituel-de-fille-credo-instagram.jpg” alt=”Rituel de Fille Inner Glow Crème Pigment in Nymph, $29″/>

Organic products have come in leaps and bounds recently, but Rituel de Fille stands apart for its consistently beautiful colors and formulas. That said, it took a viral product to really kick the brand into Internet Obsession Land (you might remember the black pigment “anti-highlighter“). When this red take—that likewise pulls triple duty for your eyes, cheeks and lips—was released, it was everywhere. Literally, we were seeing red.

  • <img src=”https://media.glamour.com/photos/59a48c45010eee7bf0e204e1/master/pass/abh-subculture-palette-instagram-2.jpg” alt=”Anastasia Beverly Hills Subculture Eye Shadow Palette, $42″/>

People the world over love ABH’s Modern Renaissance palette, so the sequel was one of the biggest deals in beauty this year. And while Claudia Soare, the brand’s president, acknowledged that the first batch’s formula had some kinks, the color choice left fans obsessing.

  • <img src=”https://media.glamour.com/photos/59a487bd32cf1d2926f5143c/master/pass/winky-lux-lipstick-instagram.jpg” alt=”Winky Lux Flower Balm, $14″/>

Hands down, one of the most beautiful lip balms in the land. Both in the tube and on your lips, because a quick slick turns into a pretty pink on your lips that’s customized to your pH.

  • <img src=”https://media.glamour.com/photos/59a44c3c6746a8222b270007/master/pass/chrissy-teigen-instagram.jpg” alt=”BECCA x Chrissy Teigen Glow Face Palette, $46″/>

Yes, true, there might be a person alive who doesn’t like Chrissy Teigen, but I ask you—how? Whether talking about post-partum depression or period zits, the woman is lovable. As is her collaboration with Becca, a quartet of glowy, shimmering, universally flattering hues.

  • <img src=”https://media.glamour.com/photos/59a46ee39845bb5caf0431c8/master/pass/desi-katy-collab-instagram.jpg” alt=”Desi x Katy Dose of Colors Collabation “/>

What do you get when two of the biggest Internet makeup personalities combine forces? A collection to be reckoned with, thanks to indie brand Dose of Colors. For some idea of the hype, Kim Kardashian teased a video of herself opening up the package. People lost their minds, and it sold out almost instantly. Luckily though, it’s getting a second life in September.

  • <img src=”https://media.glamour.com/photos/59a44c3e9845bb5caf0431ac/master/pass/kylie-vacation-instagram.jpg” alt=”Kylie Cosmetics Take Me on Vacation Palette, $52″/>

It’s a nod to how thoroughly Kylie Jenner killed it with this palette that it’s still selling out and being restocked, even with newer collections joining the mix. But it truly is different, with a variety of mauvey neutrals and lust-inducing shimmers.

  • <img src=”https://media.glamour.com/photos/59a44c3c27c2f9352e0159bb/master/pass/glow-recipe-instagram.jpg” alt=”Glow Recipe Watermelon Glow Sleeping Mask, $45 “/>

Behold: the sleeping mask that sold 5,000 units before anyone even knew what was happening. Glow Recipe nailed it with its watermelon-based formula, and it’s been on the sold out/back in stock/sold out grind ever since. You wake up glowing. It’s a good sell.

  • <img src=”https://media.glamour.com/photos/59a4825129ac1f7400da9d81/master/pass/tarte-concealer-instagram.jpg” alt=”Tarte Double Duty Beauty Shape Tape Contour Concealer, $25″/>

Not quite as buzzy as a highlighter or lipstick, but the Internet is in full-on, crazy, if you’re a bird I’m a bird, love with this concealer. Because truly, it goes above and beyond: It’s so unbelievably thick, it works just as well for highlighting and contouring, and even as a foundation replacement. The hype is big, but it delivers.

  • <img src=”https://media.glamour.com/photos/59a44c3c12565a2d1b2a50f9/master/pass/colourpop-crystals-instagram.jpg” alt=”ColourPop Crushed Crystal Collection“/>

Feel how you may about crystals, this collection is genius. If you believe in crystals, you finally had beauty products that delivered; if you don’t, who cares, it’s frigging pretty. Since it’s themed around amethyst, aquamarine, rose quartz, and aventurine, you can shop by promised “vibe,” or whatever will look best on your Instagram.

  • <img src=”https://media.glamour.com/photos/59a44ca012565a2d1b2a50fd/master/pass/wet-n-wild-rainbow-instagram.jpg” alt=”Wet n Wild Color Icon Rainbow Highlighter, $5.99″/>

Going hand in hand with the unicorn trend (when something reaches coffee body scrub form, you know it’s everywhere), Wet n Wild took the same fun, fantastical approach towards highlighter with a rainbow medley. It’s not natural in the least, but it’s exuberant, pretty, and escapist—all things to love.

  • <img src=”https://media.glamour.com/photos/59a471246746a8222b27001a/master/pass/nicki-minaj-mac-instagram.jpg” alt=”Nicki Minaj x MAC, $17.50″/>

Nicki Minaj isn’t new to the MAC game, but when images dropped of her most recent collab, fans lost their minds. Understandably so, because where her Viva Glam is a true-to-form bubblegum pink, the two shades that dropped this year were gorgeous nudes. After that, stay tuned: According to MAC, big things are coming from the singer in 2018.

Winter Skin Care Concerns and How to Deal With Them

  • <img src=”https://media.glamour.com/photos/59b19c30f98e005f9c2c7649/master/pass/Winter-Skin-Flaky-Scalp.jpg” alt=”The Winter Skin Situation: Dry Flakes”/>

The Winter Skin Situation: Dry Flakes

Most of the time those flakes you’re finding in your hair are just dandruff (a true dry-scalp condition expresses itself as tightness and usually happens only to people with eczema). But thanks to indoor heating, your dry scalp can get even drier in the winter, meaning it starts overcompensating by producing oil. “This can disrupt its natural barrier and allow yeast to overgrow, causing itching and flaking,” explains Melissa Piliang, M.D., a dermatologist specializing in scalp care at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio.

    Your Scalp Salvation

Skip the dry shampoo and wash your hair a little more regularly to remove the oil yeast feeds on. Try alternating between a sulfate-free shampoo and an antifungal formula containing either zinc pyrithione (the active ingredient in Head & Shoulders, $4.99). If nothing changes in two weeks, see a dermatologist for a prescription cortisone shampoo to help treat any inflammation and itching.

The Winter Skin Situation: Chapped Lips

Your lips need just as much care as the rest of your face come winter time. There are so many factors that contribute to chapped lips—all that cold air whipping around in combination with any lipstick you might be wearing can definitely dry them out and make them flaky or, worse, cracked. We’ve all been there; it’s super painful.

    Your Lip Lifesaver

Moisturize your lips regularly with a lip balm like Carmex Comfort Care Lip Balm in Mixed Berry ($1.99). “Look for ingredients like colloidal oatmeal and cold-pressed antioxidant-rich fruit seed oil that help rejuvenate lips by providing long-lasting moisture,” Keith Edgett, vice president of research and development at Carmex, says. It’s also helpful to wear a scarf whenever you’re stepping out in the cold and to drink plenty of water to make sure your skin stays as hydrated as possible.

The Winter Skin Situation: Dark Spots

Yes, sunspots can pop up, even in the winter. (You should always be wearing SPF.) But this season is actually a good time to help them fade. “It’s best to treat the spots when you’re not going to be spending time outdoors, which just adds to the problem,” says Patricia Farris, M.D., a dermatologist in New Orleans. Her in-office miracle worker is the Fraxel, a series of three fractional laser treatments that erase sunspots, broken capillaries, and crinkly skin without much downtime.

    Your Laserless Fix

To tackle mild UV damage at home, start using retinol pads (try Peter Thomas Roth Retinol Fusion PM Overnight Resurfacing Pads, $52) two or three times a week to exfoliate your skin and help cell turnover. And remember: Load on the sunscreen following any retinol products since they make the skin extra sun-sensitive.

The Winter Skin Situation: Arm Bumps

Those chicken-skin-like tracks on the backs of your biceps are probably not pimples, so stop picking at them. The most common reason they pop up is actually thanks to a genetic condition known as keratosis pilaris (KP). It’s a buildup of keratin protein within the hair follicles, making those raised bumps.

  • <img src=”https://media.glamour.com/photos/59b04a2c157355325f76b0bd/master/pass/Winter-Skin-AmLactin.jpg” alt=”Your Exfoliating Answer”/>

    Your Exfoliating Answer

Your inclination may be to attack these bumps with a grainy scrub, but the best way to treat them is with a chemical exfoliant, specifically a moisturizer containing 12 percent lactic acid, like AmLactin. Not only does the exfoliating acid smooth skin; it’s also a hydrating humectant that helps increase the skin’s production of healing ceramides, says Vivian Bucay, M.D., a San Antonio, Texas, dermatologist. While KP bumps are typically flesh-color, some come with accompanying redness. You can quiet the inflammation by layering a one-percent hydrocortisone cream under your chemical exfoliant.

The Winter Skin Situation: Rough and Scaly Patches

Because your elbows and knees have fewer oil glands and a slower cell turnover rate, dead skin builds up faster, meaning those areas are extra prone to dryness. To really penetrate and hydrate, apply a cream rich in urea (a humectant, that attracts water and softens skin) like Eucerin Professional Repair Extremely Dry Skin Lotion ($9.99) twice every day.

  • <img src=”https://media.glamour.com/photos/59b04a2c8b383c35314fd07d/master/pass/Winter-Skin-Glytone.jpg” alt=”Your Smooth Solution”/>

    Your Smooth Solution

According to Heather Woolery-Lloyd, M.D., a Miami dermatologist, these zones also experience more friction just from all the clothes rubbing, leg crossing, and elbow resting you do all day. “This can stir up inflammation, causing hyperpigmentation, or dark spots, especially in skin of color,” she says. To calm and even out your skin, try a moisturizer like Glytone Exfoliating Body Lotion which has 17.5 percent glycolic acid to help rough areas. For more stubborn patches, dermatologists may prescribe a bleaching cream or inject a shot of cortisone: “The hyperpigmentation is usually due to thickening of the skin,” explains Dr. Woolery-Lloyd, “and the steroid works by lightening the area and thinning it out.”

The Winter Skin Situation: Parched Hands and Nails

You wash your hands a dozen times to make sure you don’t get sick. You’re wearing gloves to keep your hands from going numb. And you keep getting gel manicures because you have a million parties to go to. All smart moves, but they’re having a negative effect on your fingers. “We see this a ton—soaking hands in acetone every week or two does real damage,” says Dr. Woolery-Lloyd, who recommends doubling up on hand cream to counteract the loss of moisture thanks to the extra winter damage.

    Spencer C. Amonwatvorakul

    Your Hydrating Defense

First, smooth on a hand cream packed with ceramides like (CeraVe Therapeutic Hand Cream, $6.59, is a dermatologist favorite). “They form a platelike barrier to really protect the skin,” Dr. Woolery-Lloyd says. Then follow it up with a heavy cream like Aquaphor ($6.29) at night to really lock in the moisture.

The Winter Skin Situation: Razor Bumps and Ingrown Hairs

No matter the time of year, shaving always comes with nicking risks, but consider dragging a blade over skin that is too dry or, worse, cracked. Dry skin makes it that much more inevitable and painful. Not to mention it lets bacteria in your skin, giving rise to razor bumps.

    Your Irritation Prevention

To reduce the possibility of bumps and ingrowns, Dr. Bucay advises using a gentle scrub (try The Body Shop Almond Milk & Honey Gently Exfoliating Cream Scrub, $24) before shaving, then use a moisturizing shave gel like Aveeno Positively Smooth ($3.97). Once your legs are baby soft, slather on that body lotion.

The Winter Skin Situation: Rough Heels

Sure, no one is looking at your feet because you’re probably wearing boots right now. And that’s a great excuse to skip your monthly pedicure. But it also means your heels may start feeling like sandpaper pretty soon. And those cracks you get in the really rough places? They do not feel good.

The Best Face Masks for Dry Skin, Acne, Redness, and More

Of all the beauty products we love (and hoard), face masks rank high up these among our favorites. Just try to name one skin care item that pairs as well with a glass of wine, bubble bath, or the latest episode of Riverdale. (You can’t. They rule.) That said, you can’t swatch a face mask in Sephora—though spot testing at home is always recommended—so it’s best to know how your skin will react before you start binge-masking. To make things easier on your face and your wallet, we’ve rounded up the masks that Glamour editors actually swear by, based on our biggest skin concerns. Read up on the best face masks for oily, dry, redness and acne-prone, and combination skin, then go forth and reap their rewards.

Cure Aqua Gel Review: The Best Japanese Exfoliator for Soft, Smooth Skin

I’m really not the kind of person who says things like, “This [random beauty product] changed my life!” For most of my adulthood, I’ve followed a skin care and makeup routine that can politely be described as boring as hell: Gentle cleanser followed by moisturizer, a dab of CC cream with a little blush or highlighter, and then I throw on some mascara and call it a day.

Still, I’ve always been a little bit jealous of people with elaborate beauty regimens. You know, someone who has a really gorgeous bathroom counter filled with beautiful, minimalistic bottles. The kind of person who regularly matches their lipstick to their outfit, and their facial cleanser to their current skin care conundrum. Someone who knows what clarifying toner is and does. Seriously, though, what is toner? [Ed Note: Read this!]

So believe me when I tell you, Cure Natural Aqua Gel changed my life. Over the years, I tried a lot of rough exfoliators in the hope that they would clean my pores, which always felt like there were blackheads ready to wreck my complexion and ruin my mood at a moment’s notice—especially on my T-zone. My thinking, I guess, was that if I used an abrasive formula, it would slough the crap out of my skin like a dang steel wool sponge. In reality, these exfoliators did little to fix the problem and made me break out. Not great.

But two years ago, when I saw Cure Natural Aqua Gel on a roundup of the best Japanese beauty products available stateside—and discovered that it’s one of the most popular treatments in Japan, with a bottle sold every 12 seconds—I figured it would be worth a shot. It didn’t hurt that a 250ml bottle was under $26 on Amazon, so it wasn’t some massive investment if it didn’t work.

Turns out, it’s the best pore cleanser I’ve ever used. It worked so well that I’ve since become the person at a party who talks at length about their skin care routine and insists that you buy a bottle of this stuff, like, yesterday. And I don’t care!

This product becomes even more magical when you first open the package and realize that it has the exact consistency, look, and even vaguely the smell of hand sanitizer. Don’t be alarmed. The most important thing is that you follow the directions: If you just try to use it like any ol’ cleanser, you won’t get results. And in case you don’t read Japanese (which you’d need if you were going to go off just what was on the bottle), here’s how to use it:

    1. With wet or dry skin, put three or four pumps of the gel on your fingertips and apply it to a small area of your face. I have an issue with the pores on my nose, so I usually start there. (Note that some people will tell you to use it only on your dry skin, but I use this bad boy on just-cleaned, drip-dried skin in the shower and still see killer results.)

    2. Let the gel sit for four or five seconds. You won’t feel anything at all during this time—no tingling, no burning—because even though it’s a chemical exfoliant, it’s surprisingly gentle.

    3. Begin to work the gel in small, gentle circles over the selected area. Do this for about 30 seconds until a film starts to appear.

    4. Repeat on other areas of your face. Don’t stop ’til you get enough.

Gross, I know, but you’ve kinda got to see the results to believe it.

As you’re working the gel with your fingers between steps 3 and 4, you’ll start to feel small, filmy balls of gunk come to the surface. Like “skin gritting,” it’s not entirely clear what they are. The bottle claims they’re “beads of dead skin cells” and I swear it’s the stuff from inside my pores because they’re cleaner immediately after, but I checked with a derm (Dr. Joshua Zeichner at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, he’s great), and technically this gel doesn’t have any exfoliating ingredients. Rather, it’s got hydrating, botanical, and firming ones, along with acrylates that help the gel stick to your skin.

Could it be that glue breaking down, as some suspect? Possibly. All I know is that it’s like Baby Foot in that it is gross and satisfying. But it’s also quick and for your face. It’s like Baby Face! And since you should really only use it a couple times a week, that 250ml bottle will last you months.

My skin’s general appearance is more even and clear after two years of consistent use. Not only am I regularly complimented on my overall face smoothness, but I occasionally insist on having complete strangers come and stroke my cheek so they can confirm its smoothness for themselves. One day, I assume this will lead to a date.

Which is why, in addition to being a great treatment, I can also recommend it as a fantastic way to break the ice at your next social engagement.

We Tested the Fenty Beauty Highlighters On Different Skin Tones, and It Lives Up to All the Hype

We’ve seen big launches in the beauty world, but honestly, very little has been on par with the Fenty Beauty debut. It could be that it’s Rihanna, and gorgeous, outsized spectacle is just her bread and butter, but more likely, the huge response has been thanks to the fact that right off the bat, Fenty Beauty treats women of all colors as equally worth representing. It’s 2017, and that should be normal, so Rihanna’s pioneering the way. And after spending two years developing the line, she did us right: from the 40 foundation colors to the sole, all-you-need lip gloss, the products are beautiful.

And the thing is, Rih understands how products play. After 12 years in the spotlight, she knows foundation needs to be a spot-on match, and she knows highlighters need to pop—which rang loud and clear at her Fenty x Puma fashion show last night. (According to our fashion editor who was there, models’ cheeks could be seen across the room.) Available as powders and in creamy stick form, they’re stunning to look at. But it’s one thing to see them in the pan or on Slick Woods’ cheekbones. It’s another to see how they live on us mere mortals of varying skin tones.

There was only one way to find out. We got our hands on the Killawatt Freestyle Highlighter duo in Lightning Dust/Fire Crystal (a pearlescent shimmer duo on the more natural end of Fenty’s highlight spectrum), and put it to the test. Below, three Glamour staffers weigh in.

    Khaliha Hawkins, digital administrative assistant

    Skin tone: “Medium dark.”

What she thought: “I feel like for my skin tone, Fire Crystal was a bit too light. But Lightning Dust was perfect, which is shocking, because I thought it was going to be the other way around. I’d wear Fire Crystal when I go out, because it’d be darker and I’d want that pop of color to stand out. But Lightning Dust would definitely be an everyday kind of thing. The brush is really cute, and it was honestly very accurate. Everyone always says a fan brush is best for highlighter, but the Fenty one seems better, and it picks up a lot of product.”

    Jessica Militare, assistant editor

    Skin tone: “Light olive.”

What she thought: “I really liked the consistency of the Fire Crystal powder. There was an instant shine that was really pretty. You have to be daring enough to want to wear it to the office, but I think you could totally get away with it, especially saying it’s Fenty Beauty. Like, this is Fenty—leave me alone. Lightning Dust is lighter, but it’s that pale, brightening feel, so it still gets the job done. For me, I prefer Fire Crystal because I want my highlighter to really show. That’s the problem that I find with highlighters—I have to coat it, I really want to see what this is doing. And sometimes with certain highlighters it takes longer, but this is an immediate effect.”

    Rachel Nussbaum, beauty writer

Skin tone: “Very pale, with neutral undertones”

What she thought: “When I first brushed Fire Crystal on, I was a little wary—it’s a lot of glitter, and I’m not here for a My Little Pony sitch. The champagne color is maybe just a touch too dark for my skin, but after a minute, I loved it. The powder has such a creamy consistency that once you give it a second to settle, it melts right into your skin. Lightning Dust is way more subtle, which isn’t what I typically look for in highlighter. But I’m super into it! A light, slightly matte powder feels really modern, and it’s great for places you want to highlight while being under the radar about it. Like definitely, Rihanna, help me weave that illusion.”
