Model Teddy Quinlivan Shares How She Gets Ready for a Date


Google “date night beauty” and you’ll get tips on bombshell hair, bedroom eyes, and why your date will love it. Sorry to all the potential Tinders matches here, but we believe in getting ready for no one but ourselves. That’s why we created the Date Prep Diaries, a personal look into the different pre-date rituals of women across America.

First up: Teddy Quinlivan, 24, single and a model in New York City and Paris

When it comes to beauty, my philosophy is that if you love yourself unapologetically, the right person will come to you. I don’t swipe on a magic mascara or lipstick and feel less insecure. It’s something I’ve had to work on internally for years and years. So when I go on a date, I try to look the most like my natural self.

I was so nervous I wasn’t going to live a normal life anymore when I came out as trans two years ago [especially when it came to dating]. But I’ve actually been pleasantly surprised. Not only has my life been normal, but I’ve been dating more and having more successful dates. It’s not like I tell anyone or announce that I’m trans before a date, because that’s not the most important thing about me. But if somebody is not attracted to me for something I have no control over, like my trans identity, there’s literally nothing I can do about it. This is who I am.

How often I go on dates varies. It really just depends on what mood I’m in. Sometimes I’ll be really busy and I don’t have time to go on any dates in a month, but other times I’ll be thirsty, and so I’ll go out on multiple dates in a week. I never go out to dinner with a boy [on a first date], especially if I’m meeting somebody from Tinder. A whole dinner can take an entire hour, and if I don’t find you attractive, then I’m just not going to devote that time to you. So my strategy is to be like, “Let’s go grab a drink.” Sometimes I don’t even want to do that, so I’ll suggest, “Let’s hang out at your place.” But I’m not really a Netflix and chill kind of girl, and I never want there to be an insinuation that it’ll lead to sex in any way, shape, or form. It’s never on the table from the get-go. It has to be earned.

The thing boys always compliment me on is my skin—they notice that. Plus, I like to feel dewy and fresh. So when I’m getting ready for a date, I usually start out by doing a face mask like Dr. Jart’s sheet masks or Sisley’s Black Rose one. Then, I exfoliate my lips with a MAC lip scrub, because I always want to have the most soft, kissable lips. After that, I moisturize with the Trish McEvoy Beauty Booster Serum, which I swear by, and Creme de la Mer.

As a passable transgender woman, I know a lot of other trans women feel more comfortable wearing more makeup. I do too in my daily life, but when I’m out on a date I don’t feel like I need to wear a lot. It’s very rare for me to find somebody I connect with, and when I do find that person, I don’t want something like my makeup overshadowing me. So I’ll usually keep my skin natural and add a little bit of La Prairie’s Cream Blush and a taupe eye with a little highlight in the corner. I always like to make my lashes look really full and thick with the Dior Pump n Show Mascara. And anything that draws attention to your lips is key, so I love the Fenty Gloss Bomb.

Michelle Obama Shares In Her New Memoir How She And Barack Embarrassed Malia On Prom Night


Now that Michelle Obama‘s highly anticipated memoir Becoming is out, we’re all getting an intimate look at the former First Lady’s time in the White House. One of the book’s most candid scenes comes when Obama describes the very parent-y way she and Barack embarrassed their oldest daughter, Malia, just before her prom.

Obama writes that in the spring of 2015, Malia revealed that she wanted to go to prom with “a boy she kind of liked.” She had only one super-relatable request of her parents on the big night at Washington, D.C.’s Sidwell Friends High School: “Just be cool please, OK?”

The Obama’s apparently did as they were told, but maybe they were a little too cool.

“On the appointed evening, her date arrived in his car, clearing security at the southeast gate of the White House, following the path up and around the South Lawn by which heads of state and other visiting dignitaries normally arrived, and then gamely — bravely — walking into the Dip Room dressed in a black suit,” Obama remembers in the book. She and Barack took an elevator down with Malia to met the boy, and Obama shares that to her daughter’s mortification, “I was barefoot, and Barack was in flip-flops.”

They had arranged for Malia’s date to drive, an exception since Malia would normally be accompanied by Secret Service. Still, Obama writes, a security detail would “basically ride the boy’s bumper all the way to the restaurant they were going for dinner before the dance.”

“By my reckoning, we did manage to play it cool, though Malia still laughs, remembering it all as a bit excruciating,” she writes.

It’s such a mom moment that shows how deeply personal Obama gets in Becoming. In the book she opens up about several other intimate experiences, including suffering a miscarriage and experiencing fertility issues.

Pete Davidson Shares How He Proposed to Ariana Grande, Says It Was ‘Dope’


Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson’s relationship is anything but traditional. After only a few weeks of dating, Davidson proposed to Grande, and the two have been planning their wedding ever since. But their whirlwind engagement isn’t the only unique part of their romance, apparently.

The Saturday Night Live comedian recently revealed exactly how he popped the question to his pop star fiancée, sharing that the big moment was incredibly laid-back. “I didn’t want to do something corny,” he said in an interview with Variety. “We were in bed hanging, after watching a movie. I was like, ‘Will you marry me?’ It was really dope.”

Despite the low-key proposal, Davidson added that he was as nervous as anyone would be when he asked the big question. “I’m still convinced she’s blind or hit her head really hard,” he said. “Something is going to happen, and she’s going to be like, ‘What the f*ck is this thing doing around?’ For right now, it’s rocking.”

Davidson recently moved in with Grande, and while he says he contributes to keeping the refrigerator stocked and doing the laundry, he calls the place “Ariana’s house.”

“I never thought I’d meet anyone like her,” he added in the interview. “I can’t even put into words how great of a person she is. I could cry. She’s the f*cking coolest, hottest, nicest person I’ve ever met. I’m f*cking living the goddamn dream. I feel like I’m living in a fantasyland.”

Grande also opened up about her relationship on the Zach Sang Show recently, saying she didn’t even plan on getting married until she met Davidson. “I’m not like a very traditional person so the fact that I’m getting married is something I never even saw coming. I never saw that coming, I never wanted that,” she explained. “Like, what’s the point? Then I kind of understood it once I found the right person.”

As for Davidson? He was on a slightly different wavelength when he first met Grande. “The day I met her, I was like, ‘Hey, I’ll marry you tomorrow,” the SNL star told GQ in an interview.

“She was calling my bluff. I sent her a picture [of engagement rings]. I was like, ‘Do you like any of these?’ She was like, ‘Those are my favorite ones,’ and I was like, ‘Sick,’” Davidson added.

Two weeks later, Davidson proposed to Grande with a $93,000 pear-shaped diamond. And the rest, as they say, is history.

Meghan McCain Shares Emotional Tribute to Late Father John McCain


John McCain—Republican senator, former POW, and two-time presidential candidate—has died after a year-long battle with brain cancer. He was 81.

“Senator John Sidney McCain III died at 4:28 p.m. on August 25, 2018,” his office said in a statement. On Thursday, McCain’s family revealed he was discontinuing treatment.

Minutes after the news broke online, the senator’s daughter Meghan McCain, 33, released her own statement on Twitter, writing that she “was with him at his end, as he was with me at my beginning.” She concluded with a C.S. Lewis quote, from the author’s 1956 children’s fantasy novel The Last Battle: “The dream is ended: This is the morning.”

The View co-host has been open about the hardship of dealing with an ill parent. “I’m not the same person I was when my dad was first diagnosed,” she told Glamour earlier this month. “My father is the sun in my universe … He’s the absolute center.”

In July 2017, McCain revealed that he had been diagnosed with glioblastoma, the most aggressive form of brain cancer that watchers of American poli­tics know well—the same disease killed Senator Ted Kennedy and Beau Biden, the oldest son of former vice president Joe Biden. Meghan McCain told Glamour she joined her father——publicly nicknamed “The Maverick” at doctor visits, waking up at 5 a.m. for his radiation appointments and had no intention of taking the View gig when it came her way. It was her father who insisted she go for it, saying she’d be “insane to pass it up.”

In Apri 2018, McCain was back in the hospital, and Meghan said doctors warned her it was time to initiate any conversations she needed to have with her father, though she hesitated. “We’ve done that,” she told her dad’s team. “He knows I love him more than anything, and I know he loves me more than anything. There’s nothing else. What’s next?”

Talking to Glamour, Megan also was forthcoming about how she, her father’s only daughter, received no special treatment growing up; the Maverick had been as strict with her as he was with her brothers. Why hadn’t she been given status—a daughter’s reprieve? But his relentlessness, she knows, made her resilient. “I realize now he did it so I could survive this.”

Andy Spade, Husband Of The Late Kate Spade, Shares His First Statement


Andy Spade, the husband and partner to the late accessories designer Kate Spade, has broken his silence for the first time since his wife’s passing on Tuesday. In a statement provided to The New York Times, Andy called his wife “the most beautiful woman in the world.”

In his statement, Andy says, “Kate was the most beautiful woman in the world. She was the kindest person I’ve ever known and my best friend for 35 years. My daughter and I are devastated by her loss, and can’t even begin to fathom life without her. We are deeply heartbroken and miss her already.”

He then explained that his wife had suffered from “depression and anxiety for many years,” adding that she was actively seeking help and working closely with medical professionals.

“We were in touch with her the night before and she sounded happy. There was no indication and no warning that she would do this. It was a complete shock. And it clearly wasn’t her. There were personal demons she was battling,” he added.

Andy also stated that the couple had been living separately for the last 10 months. Their daughter, Frances, lived between the two homes, which were just a few blocks apart. According to Andy, he still spoke to his wife every day, ate meals alongside her and continued to vacation together as a family.

“We were not legally separated, and never even discussed divorce,” he said in the statement. “We were best friends trying to work through our problems in the best way we knew how. We were together for 35 years. We loved each other very much and simply needed a break.”

To clear up tabloid rumors about his wife’s death, Andy added that everything besides these facts is false.

“She was actively seeking help for depression and anxiety over the last 5 years, seeing a doctor on a regular basis and taking medication for both depression and anxiety. There was no substance or alcohol abuse. There were no business problems. We loved creating our businesses together,” he wrote. And, perhaps most distressing of all, he added “…yet to see any note left behind and am appalled that a private message to my daughter has been so heartlessly shared with the media.”

Andy closed the message by saying his main concern is now with his daughter. He signed off with, “Kate loved Bea so very much.”

Following the news of the designer’s alleged suicide, women across generations took to social media to share their memories of the designer and just how much owning a bag she so carefully designed meant to them.

Exclusive: Meghan Markle's Makeup Artist Shares Every Detail of Her Royal Wedding Look


By this point, it’s difficult to imagine there’s something we don’t already know about the royal wedding. Everything from Meghan Markle’s dress to her bouquet to her tiara to her hair to her wedding cake to the blisters she got from her Aquazurra heels has been dissected ad naseum. (Kidding about that last one—Meghan and Harry handed out slippers to guests so their feet wouldn’t hurt—but with the level of obsession we’re now at, it could be a tabloid headline any minute.) The one detail that’s largely remained a mystery, however, is Markle’s makeup.

We know it was soft, radiant, and—importantly—not used to cover her freckles. The Internet’s been so enamored by them, in fact, searches for freckle-friendly makeup spiked on Pinterest immediately after the wedding. Her eyes were neutral with just a sweep of brown shadow and her lashes somehow didn’t drip black at that lip bite. You know the one.

As Kensington Palace announced on Saturday, the look was created by renowned makeup artist Daniel Martin—a surprise to those who believed the rumors Meghan would be doing her own bridal makeup, like Kate Middleton, but not those familiar with Martin’s work. Repped by The Wall Group, he got his start with the legendary Pat McGrath, and went on to land contracts as a Dior brand ambassador and Honest Beauty’s creative color consultant. He’s worked with celebrities including Chrissy Teigen, Jessica Alba, Elisabeth Moss—and, of course, Meghan, whom he met during her Suits days.

Among the beauty community, everyone was in agreement: no one deserved the role more. (Truly, he’s an absolute delight to be around. You should watch some videos we’ve done together!) And it’s in that spirit he’s sharing all of his details from the big day. Read on to get that Markle Sparkle.

Glamour: Everyone was obsessing over Meghan’s freckles. Why was it important to her that they show through?

Daniel Martin: She’s very much about keeping her skin as real and natural as possible. Right now in makeup, so much is covered up and masked by contouring, strobing, and creating this false dimension to what you naturally have. On your wedding day, you want to look back at your photos and think about how great you felt in your dress and not be distracted by how trendy your makeup was in 2018. I focused on bringing out her best self and elevating it to a level, that you’re not necessarily able to achieve yourself.

Glamour: What was your secret to sheering out her foundation so that her natural beauty shined through?

DM: Meghan has incredible skin. I started by prepping her skin with a clarifying toner, water-based moisturizer, and a Korean sunscreen that also acts as a foundation gripper to lock down foundation. Then I just balanced and neutralized any discolorations where needed with concealer and foundation. I like to use water-based foundations because it absorbs well into your skin without becoming oily over time.

Glamour: What did you and Meghan discuss for the look? Can you tell us more about that process?

DM: We text a lot because I’m always traveling and the time difference between our two countries is challenging to just hop on a call. So we basically did our trial over the phone! Because we know each other so well, it was actually easy.

Glamour: What was your inspiration for the look?

DM: We didn’t have a specific person as our inspiration, but our anchor descriptions were timeless, effortless, and chic. She wanted to look like her best self.

Glamour: What inspired you and Meghan to do a focus-on-the-eyes look?

DM: There’s something magical that happens to the iris’ of her eyes when you add warm tones of rusts or copper close to them (in the tight line or waterline). With this in mind, I wanted her eyes to almost “flutter” as she looked up at Harry (he’s 6’1″). I customized and shaped out some corner lashes to give her that doe-eye look, pulling them out on the outer corners. This added weight to her natural lashes without looking heavy.

Glamour: What’s your secret for such a natural-looking smoky eye?

DM: The trick to this technique is to lay down a base of cream color all over your lid and layer it with an accompanied eyeshadow. I used shades of warm chestnut, cocoa, and smudge of rust into her lash line. This melds and breaks down naturally over time, creating a depth that appears smudgy and smoky in pictures.

Glamour: What did you do to make her cheeks look so radiant and glowy?

DM: I used a luminizer with a dual fiber brush to stipple on top of her foundation. I then used my finger to lightly tap a cream coral color on the apples of her cheeks to add a slight flush as well.

Glamour: What did you use on her lips?

DM: I made sure her lips were well hydrated, but I opted for a tinted lip balm that gave color without looking like heavy lipstick. We wanted a natural flush.

Glamour: What tricks did you use to make sure Meghan’s makeup stayed in place all day?

DM: We used blotting papers for her forehead, around her nose, and chin. And makeup-wise, I only used powder on her forehead, that’s it!

Glamour: Did you give her any products or touch-up advice for the reception?

DM: After we got her ready for the reception, she was on her own. I gave her her favorite blot papers and lipstick and she was off!

Glamour: Did you do anything to accentuate her shoulders or collarbone in that gorgeous Givenchy gown? What about her Stella McGartney evening dress?

DM: The same luminizer that I used on her face, was also on her body. You have to keep the continuity for it to appear harmonious from head to toe.

Glamour: How did you make sure her makeup looked good both in person and in photos?

DM: Because I had to think about live TV, in the church and high noon light, I needed to understand what I could and couldn’t do on her face. With that being said, it’s important where you create the depth and add light. Too much of both can look overdone in both situations and not flattering on a big screen. My advice is to choose your best asset and accentuate it. That helps keeps the balance on camera as well.
