The Google Assistant Has a Sense of Humor Thanks to Elena Skopetos, the Device's "Funny Bone"

While she’s not in a traditional writers’ room—no, it doesn’t look like a scene out of 30 Rock, with writers feasting on pizza and at war over concepts—much of her time is spent coming up with timely jokes. She’s worked on special material for Mother’s Day, and is already gearing up for for New Year’s. Her favorite joke she’s ever written for the Assistant, was pegged to football. “Why did the center freak out during the play? I don’t know, he just snapped.”

According to Skopetos, writing jokes for the Google Assistant isn’t all that different from how you’d develop a regular on a sitcom or craft a standup persona. “We have a basic model for the Assistant of being a smart, humble, polite, person, but it’s always growing and evolving.” Still, there are certain nuances she employs when writing jokes for her own comedy, that you won’t find in one of the Assistant’s zingers. “With my comedy, I can go down a really niche rabbit hole. Like right now I’m working on a character that’s a Grey’s Anatomy surgeon. It’s kind of a niche thing where everyone might not get it, though I think it’s funny. But when I’m working on the Assistant, I have to really try to work in universals, and things that will appeal to everyone,” Skopetos says.

But the pursuit of universal appeal isn’t without its own pitfalls. A recent report from UNESCO found that devices like Amazon’s Alex and Apple’s Siri—all of which use a woman’s voice as the default—perpetuate gender stereotypes. They also encourage the belief that “women are obliging, docile, and eager-to-please helpers, available at the touch of a button or with a blunt voice command,” the report stated. Skopetos, who liaises across teams to make sure that the personality of the Assistant stays consistent, says those concerns are “certainly something we think about a lot.“

“The first thing I’ll say is we think of the Assistant as genderless,“ she says. “We never use the pronouns ’he’ or ’she’ when we’re referring to it. And we have a large selection of different voices from different backgrounds that you can choose from.”

Plus, having an acute awareness of how women are depicted and treated as we move about the world is one of the main themes of Skopetos’ own sets. In one of her sketches called, ”What Every Woman You’ve Ever Met Is Thinking”,” she cuts back and forth between the polite conversation a woman is having with a male colleague and her honest inner dialogue, which sounds like the heroine of an action movie plotting the different ways she could take him down in case he tried to make a move. “It’s funny, but it comes from a real place of, yeah, it can be really scary for a woman to be alone in a room with a guy you don’t know,” Skopetos says. “I’m thinking a lot about how I can take my experience as a woman and use comedy to amplify that voice.”

And while Skopetos is just as focused on her personal comedy career as ever—she performs at improv clubs all over New York—it can be tough to balance it all. Though Google is supportive of her second life (her managers will even come to her gigs), it can be straight up exhausting. ”Balancing two careers is a doozy. Just when you think you have it right, something blows up and you have to figure it out all over again,” Skopetos says. But she wouldn’t trade the experience, or what it’s done for her comedic development, for the world. ”It’s given me a broader perspective of how many different experiences and types of people are out there, and how to get into the mindset of putting myself in someone else’s shoes who might be radically different from me, and also write in a way that’s going to be empathetic and passionate to that.”

The Latest Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton 'Feud' Rumor Doesn't Even Make Sense

If I had to guess, I’d say Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton probably have the same relationship you’d share with a sister-in-law. You’re not best friends—because you have separate lives—but you’ll happily bond at Thanksgiving over the Netflix show you’re both binge-ing or look at photos of her kids. (Especially if they have hilarious Instagram fan accounts.)

The rumor mill, however, has been working overtime to create some type of feud between the Duchess of Sussex and the Duchess of Cambridge. Never mind that Kensington Palace released a statement denying any ill will between the women. If a random website says Kate left a bridesmaids dress fitting for Meghan’s wedding “in tears,” then it’s obviously true, right?

And the stories keep getting more and more wild—so much so that the latest one doesn’t even make sense. According to Us Weekly, Kate and Meghan had a chat on Christmas Day where they aired out their grievances. Can we confirm or deny that? No, but what comes after this has me like…???

“Kate opened up about feeling like Meghan had used her to climb the royal ladder,” a source reveals to Us Weekly.

Sorry, but I’m confused: Was Kate the one flying to Toronto every few weeks to visit Meghan on the set of Suits? Was it over a roasted chicken Meghan made that Kate decided to propose? Did Kate put on a really convincing ginger beard and wig for her royal wedding to Meghan?

No, really: How did Meghan use Kate to climb the social ladder? Meghan dated Prince Harry. She got engaged to Prince Harry. She married Prince Harry. The closest I’ve ever been to London is listening to Rita Ora’s album, Phoenix, but I have a feeling marrying Prince Harry is a pretty quick way to jump rank with the royals. No help from Kate is required.

And this is all assuming Meghan is trying to social climb, which she probably isn’t. Have you seen the way she looks at Prince Harry? That’s true love. She held an umbrella for him one time, for goodness sake. Do you know what that means? It means, “I love you even though the only throne in your future is Game of Thrones season eight.”

Can we just let Kate and Meghan go back to making idle chat about the weather in peace? It’s what we all deserve in 2019.

'The Big Bang Theory' Season 11 Episode 13 Recap: As Usual, Penny Has the Most Common Sense

We’re now halfway through the season 11 of The Big Bang Theory and one thing has become clear: Thank God for Penny. Seriously. Even in episodes in which nothing really happens—like tonight’s, for example—she’s the best part. It’s why I still stand by my theory earlier this season that The Big Bang Theory will end with the reveal that Penny is a world-renowned psychologist and the past 200-plus episodes were all a dream.

If you watched tonight’s episode, it all makes sense, right? Sheldon found Penny to be a surprising source of scientific inspiration during a lull in his career, to the shock of pretty much everyone but Penny. (And FYI, she came to the rescue of the men once again. Just saying.) No offense to Young Sheldon, but I’d love to see a spin-off of Young Penny next.

In fact, I had plenty of thoughts during tonight’s episode, which is why I decided it was time to make a list. Here, five things that struck me during “The Solo Oscillation.”

1. Even though Raj and Howard are friends again, I’m thrilled the writers decided Raj should still wear his hair naturally curly. If you remember, Raj revealed that he straightened his hair all these years because Howard did, and he wanted to fit in when he came to the United States. By not going back to the hair straightener, Raj continues to establish his self-worth and own who he is.

2. I care more about young Sheldon than I do about adult Sheldon. Season 11 Sheldon is more of an annoying child than Iain Armitage’s young Sheldon will ever be. In tonight’s episode, adult Sheldon admits that he berated Leonard to conceal the fact that he’s not working on anything at the moment. And as anyone who has watched every episode of this season knows, it’s like the 100th time Sheldon has insulted, crossed, or acted immaturely toward someone he loves. Enough. (Unless you’re Amy, who doesn’t seem to mind.)

3. Are we ever going to revisit a potential romance between Sheldon’s mom and Leonard’s dad? Every time I see Laurie Metcalf on screen as Mary, I wonder if we’ll ever revisit that potential romance between Mary and Alfred during Penny and Leonard’s wedding. After all, it’s not like Judd Hirsch isn’t still in the CBS family…he stars on the network’s Superior Donuts. So where’s the cameo?

4. This show makes me hungrier than any food commercial on TV. Case in point: I’ve been battling a sore throat and don’t have much of an appetite, but the minute Penny and Sheldon started eating pizza together tonight, I’m ready to order Domino’s, Pizza Hut, and every local chain within a five mile radius. Same with Chinese food every time the group breaks out the chopsticks and plastic plates.

5. Amy needs to have a long, hard look at her relationship. Nothing new here, but the Amy from previous seasons would totally not stand for Sheldon’s antics now that they’re engaged. When she asks Leonard if marriage feels different and he replies not really, she acts relieved since “Sheldon and I are in a really great place right now, and I don’t want anything to mess that up.” I’m sorry, but “a really great place?” Leonard reminds her that the reason she’s not with Sheldon right now is because he kicked her out of the apartment to be alone. As I was saying…

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Have a 'Profound Sense of Commitment'

As if you needed any more confirmation that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are taking England—and the world—by storm with their upcoming wedding, the couple has literally been blessed by a holy figure.

The Most Revd and Rt Hon Justin Welby—whom you probably know as the Archbishop of Canterbury—recently expressed his delight about Prince Harry and Markle’s engagement, also dropping a few hints at how their May 2018 wedding will be structured. And unlike Prince William and Kate Middleton’s grandiose Westminster Abbey wedding with thousands of guests in attendance, we’ll be expecting something a little more low-key with the duo’s choice in Windsor Castle.

“I am very, very sure after conversations that this is no tick-box exercise of ‘We ought to get married in church,’” he told BBC Radio Four’s Today broadcast, per People. “There is a profound sense of commitment, of seriousness both about faith and about their lives together which is quite inspirational.”

The Archbishop isn’t sure yet if he’ll be marrying the couple in Windsor’s cozy St. George’s Chapel—“I think that’s up to them”—but he’s confident it’ll be an event to remember. “Of course it’s important because people will look at it and they’ll see a model of how two people commit their lives to one another before God, in the presence of millions of people,” he said. “That’s going to be wonderful, it’s always a beautiful moment. Every wedding is profoundly beautiful.”

As we already know, Markle has to be baptized before the wedding day to become a member of the Church of England. And as opposed to other, bigger royal weddings in the past, there won’t be a procession through London or a balcony kiss for everyone to witness, either. But despite the chill (OK, chill-er affair), don’t fret, you’ll still be able to watch on TV.

This 'Game of Thrones' Fan Theory About Daenerys Getting Pregnant Actually Makes a Ton of Sense

You know the routine: watch Game of Thrones on Sunday night, then anxiously check in throughout the week to see what fan theories have popped up (so many!). We’re never ones to shy away from a good one ourselves, and this latest one involving our favorite bearded IKEA-rug wearer and the mother of dragons is too convincing not to share.

No, it’s not that they’re going to get together—at this point, that story arc is basically a given. Jon has already vowed to bend the knee, and Dany’s fallen for the King in the North’s infectious brooding, as evidenced by that bed scene at the end of last week’s episode.

Instead, this theory expands on their connection and takes it one step further: not only will there be some cave love scenes in the future, but Daenerys and Jon will make one or more babies as a result.

As Buzzfeed points out, there were three key moments from episode six that brought up the issue of children, and they’re especially foreshadowing when put into context with the healer witch’s prophesy from season one. Buckle up!

1. When Daenerys and Tyrion argued about succession. Daenerys put a lid on the discussion pretty quickly and made it clear she had strong feelings about the matter.

2. There was a definite meaningful look when Jon offered Jorah his family’s sword and Jorah declined, saying Jon should pass it down to his kids. Sure, it’s not Grandma’s china, but it’ll do. Also swords are phallic symbols. If you look closely, there’s a definite eyebrow raise when Jorah hands Longclaw back and tells Jon to make it an heirloom. The actor has also said the moment could partially be him approving of Jon and Daenerys getting closer.

3. Then, at the very end, Daenerys opens up about her inability to have kids following the death of her dragon. “The dragons are my children. They’re the only children I’ll ever have. Do you understand?” Pretty much nothing in the Westeros world is a definite, and so the definitiveness of her “my dragons are the only kids I’ll ever have” statement is worth questioning.

That’s a lot of kid talk for one episode, and screenwriters are usually beyond efficient with their dialogue—so reading into things isn’t a bad way to go. We get a sense that with each of these interactions that there’s more than what’s at the surface.

Plus, Buzzfeed also pointed out why there might be a bigger twist coming. All the way back in season one, the blood magic healer Mirri Maz Duur made Dany believe that she could trade a horse’s life to save Khal Drogo’s. And, well, we all know how that went. Dany ended up losing her unborn child, Rhaego, in a difficult pregnancy and Drogo went into a vegetative state. When Dany begs Mirri to know when Drogo will return to normal, the healer responds: “When the sun rises in the west and sets in the east. When the seas go dry and mountains blow in the wind like leaves.”

Obviously all the things Mirri mentions seem impossible, so Dany takes her words to mean she won’t see Drogo again, nor will she be able to have more children. But in the book there’s more to the prophecy. In it, Mirri’s last line reads, “When your womb quickens again, and you bear a living child, then he will return, and not before.”

This plays into a long-held fan theory: that the prophesy might actually not be about Drogo, but rather Dany will find a new love and be able to have a baby again.

Now, follow us here, this theory gives the vision Daenerys had in the House of the Undying (back in season 2) a new twist. If you remember (or watch above), she walks through the throne room of a war-torn Red Keep. It’s snowing, which Buzzfeed points out could have something to do with Jon or the Night King. Daenerys reaches out to touch the throne before turning away. Then, she turns up north of the Wall in a tent with Drogo and Rhaego, but ultimately chooses to leave them behind.

As one Redditor points out, the vision lines up with Dany’s storyline this season: she’s put a pause on going after the Iron Throne to team up with Jon and fight the Night King. She’s also gone north of the Wall, and left behind her love (Jon) and her child (Viserion, the dragon killed by the Night King in last week’s episode). But, as we all know, Jon makes it out of the frozen water alive and comes back to Dany—so could the prophecy come true after all? Has it actually been about Jon this whole time?

There’s also the “Song of Ice and Fire” title of the original book series: Daenerys is usually associated with fire; Jon with ice. What could be more poetic than two opposites coming together and having a child who saved the kingdom or some other mythical feat?

In the Game of Thrones world, twists are par for the course, and we wouldn’t put the possibility of such a huge one past them.
