Selena Gomez's Cannes Makeup Had a Secret Nod to Miley Cyrus

Selena Gomez walked the famous Cannes Film Festival red carpet for the first time yesterday to promote her upcoming new movie, The Dead Don’t Die. From her white two-piece Louis Vuitton dress to some serious bling in the form of a Bulgari diamond necklace and ring, she looked incredible.

But what we really need to talk about is Gomez’s ridiculously good glam, specifically her makeup. The vibe was a modern take on Old Hollywood with a classic red lip and a cat-eye by makeup artist Hung Vanngo using Marc Jacobs Beauty. It also had a hidden nod to fellow former Disney star, Miley Cyrus. Vanngo used Le Marc Lip Crème Lipstick in Oh Miley 200 ($32), a strawberry red shade inspired by the singer, on Gomez to give her lips a pop of color.

That wasn’t even the only pop star connection with her look. Vanngo revealed that he also used the brand’s Youthquake Hydra-Full Retexturizing Gel Crème ($59), which was Lady Gaga‘s secret skin weapon during awards season and the Met Gala. (Gaga’s longtime makeup artist Sarah Tanno is an ambassador for the brand, so she got to test it out secretly for months before it hit shelves this month.)

Vanngo also used Accomplice Concealer & Touch-Up Stick in L23 ($32) and Accomplice Instant Blurring Beauty Powder in Siren 52 ($49) to create even more of a glow before adding O!Mega Bronzer Coconut Perfect Tan in Tan-Tastic! ($49) and Air Blush Soft Glow Duo in 506 Flesh & Fantasy ($42) for a touch of warmth.

And to balance Gomez’s bold red lip, Vanngo created a sparkly cat-eye. (Perhaps Taylor Swift was the inspiration?) Here’s how to re-create it for yourself.

First apply a light layer of See-quins Glam Glitter Eyeshadow in Flashlight ($28) to give your lids that glittery look. Next, use the Magic Marc’er Precision Pen Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner—inspired by calligraphy pens—in Blacquer ($30) to create a bold wing liner that emphasizes your eye shape. Then, finish with a few coats of Velvet Noir Major Volume Mascara ($26).

The final result? Flawless. If only a makeup look could win the Palme d’Or.

Victoria’s Secret Swim Is Back After a Three-Year Hiatus

Just before the start of summer 2016, Victoria’s Secret shoppers said goodbye to its in-house swim line, seemingly for good. Parent company L Brands made the decision to counter slowing sales: “In order to better focus our resources on core merchandise categories, we have decided to eliminate non-core businesses, including swim, in our Victoria’s Secret lingerie business,” read a statement from the brand. Three years later Victoria’s Secret is reversing that decision.

On Monday Victoria’s Secret shared a big “secret”: It unveiled its relaunched swimwear selection on social media. The revamped assortment has much in common with the swim line shoppers may remember. The online-only collection includes colorful maillots and bikinis with cutouts and revealing fits. Prices for the new collection range from $42 to $158.

There are some new additions to the Victoria’s Secret swim lineup in its second iteration. Aside from its own in-house designs, it also carries swimwear from 15 outside vendors, including BCBGeneration, FAE, Lucky Brand, and Seafolly. The debut campaign was modeled by longtime brand models including Sara Sampaio, Elsa Hosk, and Jasmine Tookes.

The return of Victoria’s Secret swim comes after several years of weakening sales. Some of those declining numbers have been attributed to the brand’s “sexy” image. It has been criticized for casting a single body type in its campaigns and annual runway show. Meanwhile, brands that put inclusive sizing at the forefront (like Aerie or Harper Wilde) have grown.

Stuart Burgdoerfer, chief financial officer of L Brands, said customer feedback and further hits to sales following the line’s removal from stores led Victoria’s Secret back to its swim business. “We have made a very important decision and we believe a good one to reenter the swim business again, driven principally by customer feedback that we’ve received,” he said.

Given that, it’ll be interesting to see how the brand responds to customers now that the collection is live. After the launch, shoppers had mixed reactions to the collection. Many were excited to see swimsuits back on the Victoria’s Secret website but called the debut pieces “disappointing” and “expensive” on Twitter. The size range of the suits is also receiving criticism—it spans only from extra-small to large for one-pieces, bikini tops, and bottoms.

It’s not just swim that the embattled mall brand plans to revive. People reports that Victoria’s Secret will also expand into eyewear and footwear later this year. Meanwhile, in-store experiences are still declining. Per WWD, Victoria’s Secret still plans to close many brick-and-mortar stores this year.

The Secret Way Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Talked When They Started Dating

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry currently live such public lives that it’s easy to forget when their relationship was quite private. Remember, the duo waited until November 2017 to confirm their relationship—through an engagement announcement, no less. Before this, everything was speculative. No one knew whether Markle and Prince Harry were dating because they were so inconspicuous when they spent time together. There were rumors Prince Harry would fly back and forth between London and Toronto, where Markle was filming Suits at the time. She reportedly made the same trip every few weeks, as well. And they even, reportedly, had a secret way with which they communicated long distance. It’s nothing crazy: They used their cell phones, but Prince Harry reportedly used a secret Instagram account to direct-message Markle.

This comes from royal expert Omid Scobie, who says the early stages of the couple’s relationship was dependent on DMs because they lived in different countries. Prince Harry is reportedly a big fan of emoji and uses them quite often when communicating with Markle, both then and now. “A lot of their early days were spent DM-ing and texting back and forth,” Scobie told Royal Box, according to the Daily Express.

Scobie says Prince Harry’s secret Instagram account still exists, and he also has a secret Twitter one he uses to keep tabs on the media. “Prince Harry told me that he follows a lot of the royal correspondents on Twitter to see what they’re up to,” he also told Royal Box. “I think he does pay attention to what’s being written about him and, of course, now his wife.”

Because Meghan Markle and Prince Harry mostly travel together now, the amount of DMs they have is probably limited. That being said, I’m dying to know what emoji he uses when he’s annoyed by a rumor. Angry-face emoji (?)? Crying emoji (?)? Side-eye emoji (?)? All are fine choices.

The Secret to Having the Best Relationship With Your Work Wife

Grey’s Anatomy‘s Cristina Yang and Meredith Grey. Younger‘s Liza Miller and Kelsey Peters. Crazy Ex-Girlfriend‘s Rebecca Bunch and Paula Proctor. These television power pairs are each other’s closest confidants, allies, and cheerleaders. They’re also work wives. But beyond pop culture—across every industry—the work wife relationship is an important dynamic for many women. So much so that Erica Cerulo and Claire Mazur, co-founders of fashion and design website Of a Kind, have written a definitive book on the subject called Work Wife: The Power of Female Friendship to Drive Successful Businesses.

In Work Wife, Cerulo and Mazur explore how female partnerships in the office can lead to a more progressive, productive, and empowering workplace. The biggest takeaway from the book—and their own experience—is the secret to maintaining a solid relationship: You have to put in the work.

One of the ways Cerulo and Mazur do this is by seeing a management coach together. They started going to theirs, Ben Michaelis, Phd., six years into working together—right after they sold their company, which they still continue to run. “We realized we wanted to see a coach because we were struggling,” Cerulo says. “For the first time ever, we had a boss, and that was the biggest source of tension: How to manage that situation as a single unit and how to deal with authority in this way that we’d never had to do in the course of our working relationship.”

They meet with their coach weekly, and the structure of the sessions are similar to couples therapy. They say working with a third party has strengthened their partnership, sharpened their communication skills, and made them more effective leaders. “I don’t think it’s possible to have the working relationship we have and not wish you could work through certain issues with someone else, or have a forum to deal with the ins and outs of your day to day interactions,” Cerulo says.

Ballantine Books

So when Sierra Tishgart and Maddy Moelis started Great Jones together, Cerulo and Mazur recommended seeing their coach. Tishgart and Moelis are childhood friends of 20 years—they first met at sleepaway camp—but when it came time to launch their kitchenware company, they knew they wanted to consult an expert. “Seeing a coach was one of the first business decisions we made and one of the first investments,” Tishgart says. “To run our business, both successfully and long term, depends on the strength of our relationship. So having a dedicated space to process all of the rapid changes that we’re experiencing in the business—and knowing that we can rely on that—has been invaluable.”

Whether you’re launching a venture with a partner, or just have an extremely close bond with someone on your team, both pairs of work wives attest that having dedicated time to work on your work relationship can help in the long run. As coach Michaelis puts it, “Erica and Claire, as well as Sierra and Maddy, are so successful because they really love each other. They protect each other like they would a marriage, and they also work on that love. Making time for your counterpart—like you would for a romantic partner—and treating it with that level of significant care is what makes it a success.”

So if you’re looking to better your work relationships—with a management coach or by carving out some time for one another—here are a few tips to get you started.

Understand Each Other’s Quirks

They say that opposites attract, which can also be true with business partners. Tishgart considers this a strength of her relationship with Moelis. “What makes Maddy and my relationship work is that different things stress us out,” she says. They take time to understand each other’s differences, as well as empathize with the other’s stressors. “We try to figure out how to really take care of each other in those instances,” Tishgart explains. “It’s natural to have stress and anxiety when you’re build something. So we talk and say, ‘Hey, I see this was a stressful week for you. How can we make sure that stress doesn’t spread and dissipate?’ This helps us not become a sponge for one another. When you’re working so closely together, it’s important to figure out how not to diminish or erase your stress, but to really help to contain and support it.”

Quality Time Is Key

You can’t work on your relationship if you’re not actually spending time together. Michaelis suggests setting aside weekly face-to-face time, no matter what. “That time is sacred, so you can empathize with one another and know what’s going on in each other’s lives,” he says. He also warns that you shouldn’t make the majority of your communication over the Internet, especially around challenging or sensitive issues. “Slack is fine for purely functional things, but we overuse the tool,” he explains. “Especially when we don’t want to deal with certain things. That’s where the challenge really comes in.”

Anya Taylor-Joy on the Secret to a Perfect At-Home Spa Day

After her hauntingly beautiful breakthrough in 2015’s The Witch, Anya Taylor-Joy was at the top of just about every “one to watch” list in Hollywood. For some new stars, that can be the start and stop of their careers. Not Taylor-Joy. The hype this time was real, and she followed that early success with a memorable role in M. Night Shyamalan’s buzzy thriller, Split, followed by the sequel Glass. Next up, the 22-year-old is appearing as Illyana Rasputina (Magik) in the X-Men spin-off, The New Mutants.

So what’s an actress on the rise to do after she’s landed a superhero blockbuster? A gorgeous beauty campaign, naturally. Enter a partnership with Viktor&Rolf on the debut of the brand’s new Flowerbomb Midnight fragrance. Flowerbomb Midnight plays on the brand’s iconic Flowerbomb by honoring the original’s bright floral scent. But add in notes of night-blooming jasmine, patchouli, and blackcurrant, and the result is a sensual, bold perfume that feels both feminine and fierce—which is Taylor-Joy’s favorite part. “It’s saying that things aren’t just black or white—or black and pink, in this instance,” she explains. “Femininity and fierceness are able to co-exist. They’re not mutually exclusive.”

It’s fitting for Taylor-Joy, a woman who demands your full attention on screen but will warmly pause, mid-sentence, to compliment your shoes. And when it comes to beauty, she’s completely fearless—ready to shave her head or try a full glitter look if the occasion calls for it. Here, she answers our Big Beauty Questions.

Courtesy of Viktor&Rolf

What’s one beauty trend you love, but would never try?

ATJ: Oh, I’m not sure there are many of those. I mean, I don’t think my agent would let me shave my head just yet—but I’d be down to do it. I think I’d be down to try anything. Pink mascara might look a bit weird on me, but I’d try it for sure.

I love that you’d try anything. Is there any beauty trend that would scare you or be a challenge for you?

ATJ: A very nude lip, actually, because my eyes are so big that unless I have a color on my lips I tend to look a bit like an owl. Just because my skin is so fair, and the natural pigment of my lip is actually quite dull. For the Flowerbomb campaign, they put foundation on top of my lips and that instinctually freaked me out a little bit—but I ended up liking it. There’s something exciting about showing the face that you’re most vulnerable in to the entire world.

What’s one beauty trend you wish you had never tried?

ATJ: Before I realized that I would never be good at putting on makeup, I definitely went through the raccoon eye phase. I thought I was cool; looking back, decidedly less so. But I’m proud that I tried it.

What’s one beauty rule you swear by?

ATJ: Best thing: If you want to seem like you’ve made an effort, just literally slick on lipstick. It ties everything together. You don’t need to do your eyes. You don’t need to do anything else; just lipstick, and you’re ready to go.

What’s one beauty rule you think is BS?

ATJ: The whole, “eyes and lips and everything fades.” I think that you can go for whatever you want. I’ve seen people pull off some really daring looks to my rapturous applause. So I think you can do whatever you want.

Fill in the blank: “I love my hair…”

ATJ: …when it’s wet and salty. I love the ocean and that texture that it gets when you’ve been surfing or swimming. I don’t own a hair dryer. I tend to just wash my hair, put it up in a bun, and let it dry.

You travel constantly. What city gives you the greatest beauty inspiration?
