Somehow a Starbucks Cup Made It Into a *Game of Thrones* Scene Last Night

UPDATE: May 12, 5:30 P.M.

It appears that the Game of Thrones cast is turning against each other as Coffee Cup-gate’s culprit continues to remain a mystery. Fans pointed fingers first at Sophie Turner, a.k.a. Sansa Stark, who had been captured on camera holding a similar cup in a behind-the-scenes pic, but she denied that she left it on the table for the cameras to (accidentally) include in a scene. Now, in a twist worthy of, well, a Game of Thrones episode, Turner’s pointing her finger at Emilia Clarke, a.k.a. Daenerys Targaryen (all in good fun, of course).

Turner sat down with Jimmy Fallon to discuss Coffee Cup-gate on Friday and made her case for Clarke.

“Let’s clear this up,” the actress told Fallon. “That’s in a different scene, and also, we all have the same cups for all of our water and tea and everything, so I’m gonna just go with, I mean look who it’s placed in front of. Emilia Clarke. She’s the culprit.”

Clarke, on her part, got ahead of the story last week, denying that it was hers after Liam Cunningham (the Onion Knight) went on Conan and told the host it was her cup. “What a bastard!” Clarke told the L.A. Times (“laughing,” it should be noted). “I don’t even drink Starbucks. I have no idea whose it was. Liam’s a cheeky one. The funny thing is in Belfast, there is no craft coffee selling Starbucks. Unless we’ve got the Americans in, some hotshot producer, and then we’ll have Starbucks lying around.”

We might never know the answer.

(P.S. If you didn’t catch the cup while streaming the episode and have no idea what this is all about, it’s because the cup was digitally removed from VOD episodes.)

Original Story

Caution: Some light Game of Thrones spoilers ahead.

After last week’s episode of Game of Thrones, people were buzzing about how Arya Stark was the one to kill the Night King. But this week’s viral topic is a little…erm, lighter. It has nothing to do with the plot—though that was action-packed—and instead focuses on an apparent production blooper.

Don’t know what I’m talking about? Well, let me take you to the exact moment in question. It happened while Tormund was talking to Daenerys, who was sitting at a table and not looking happy in the slightest. If you look closely, you’ll see something interesting on the table in front of Daenerys. Something modern. Something you might drink a few times a week, at least. It’s a Starbucks cup, and fans are completely losing their minds.

This eagle-eyed fan captured video of the moment and provided some hilarious commentary. Check it out for yourself, below:

I truly have no idea how a Starbucks cup ended up in the final cut of a Game of Thrones episode. Did the beverage empire somehow break the time-space continuum? Does Daenerys have time-traveling powers we don’t know about? Is the lighting on the show just so bad that this was missed? Either way, I’m so thankful this mistake happened—if anything for the Twitter reactions. Check out just a few of them, below.

Now I’m sitting here thinking about what Starbucks orders the Game of Thrones characters would have. Arya Stark is such a badass that she’d probably drink just plain coffee with no sugar. Sansa Stark strikes me as a green tea kind of gal. All the dragons on the show would 100 percent order Caramel Frappuccinos. Cersei would walk into a Starbucks and walk out the second she realizes wine isn’t on the menu (which, understandable). Jon Snow, meanwhile, doesn’t deserve any Starbucks at all.

Ariana Grande Has Unveiled Her Very Own Cloud-Themed Starbucks Drink

Yesterday, March 4, Ariana Grande posted a mysterious tweet directed at Starbucks that featured a string of seemingly random emojis. But it turns out, she wasn’t just craving caffeine. The singer just unveiled that she’s actually teamed up with the coffee company to release her very own drink: the Cloud Macchiato.

Starbucks then revealed in a tweet that the new drink comes in caramel and cinnamon, and it’s so “light and fluffy they’re basically a cloud in a cup.” No, there is no Grande-branded sweetener involved, but the concoction does contain a vanilla-flavored foam made with egg white powder, which causes it to appear cloud-like. That frothy quality also explains why the company had been non-stop tweeting about clouds in the last 24 hours.

“We’ve long been fans of Ariana Grande’s (and we’re both fans of Clouds), so we’re excited to work with her to celebrate the debut of Cloud Macchiato,” Starbucks said in a statement, according to USA Today.

Ariana, meanwhile, tweeted a few photos in a Starbucks apron and hash-tagged them #starbucksambassador. Within just a few minutes, fans had already swarmed their local baristas and started posting pictures of the drink. One fan, whom Ariana retweeted, let the world know that they could “officially confirm that the caramel cloud macchiato does indeed slap.”

However, others had some very legitimate questions. The egg white powder doesn’t appear to be safe for vegans who still want a side of cloud in their beverage. And others took issue with Ariana partnering up with a big corporation so close to International Women’s Day, calling it a version of “branded female empowerment.” (Starbucks has shared that for International Women’s Day, they’re also planning to release two playlists, one which will include Grande.)

“You cannot write better parody of woke capitalism than the actual thing,” one Twitter user wrote, adding, “Happy International Women’s Day from Ariana Grande and Starbucks. You’re doing feminism with the coffee.” Ariana only responded to say International Women’s Day is on March 8, but didn’t address the criticism further.

She later tweeted about her upcoming tour, which is going to keep her busy the next few months—we’re guessing she’s going to be drinking a lot of her own coffee when she needs a boost.

Starbucks Will Close Every U.S. Store for Racial-Bias Education on May 29

Following the arrest of two black men at a Starbucks in Philadelphia, the coffee chain has announced it will be closing all of its company-owned stores across the country on May 29 for racial-bias education.

“I’ve spent the last few days in Philadelphia with my leadership team listening to the community, learning what we did wrong and the steps we need to take to fix it,” Starbucks CEO Kevin Johnson said in a statement. “While this is not limited to Starbucks, we’re committed to being a part of the solution. Closing our stores for racial bias training is just one step in a journey that requires dedication from every level of our company and partnerships in our local communities.”

According to the press release, all Starbucks stores and corporate offices nationwide will be closed on the Tuesday afternoon so the chain’s almost 175,000 employees can receive training. Starbucks announced that the training curriculum is intended to “address implicit bias, promote conscious inclusion, prevent discrimination and ensure everyone inside a Starbucks store feels safe and welcome.” Furthermore, the chain said, the curriculum will be designed with guidance from “national and local” experts who include “Bryan Stevenson, founder and executive director of the Equal Justice Initiative, Sherrilyn Ifill, president and director-counsel of the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund, Heather McGhee, president of Demos, former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder, and Jonathan Greenblatt, CEO of the Anti-Defamation League.”

Following the training day, the curriculum materials will be made available to other companies, according to Starbucks. It is unclear whether the training will continue beyond that one day, and whether Starbucks has any rules in place to make sure employees are adhering to the training later on, although the company did state it would be part of the “onboarding process” for new employees.

Starbucks’s announcement comes less than a week after a video showing police arresting two black men at a Philadelphia Starbucks drew widespread criticism and accusations of racism. On Thursday, April 12, the two men were arrested after an employee called the police on them for waiting for their friend without having purchased anything, witnesses said.

“The girl behind the counter had called 911, apparently, and the cops came and said the guys were ‘trespassing,'” Melissa DePino, the witness who took the video, told Philadelphia magazine. “They said we were waiting for somebody, and then the white guy in the video—that’s their family friend they were waiting for—he shows up. The guys wanted to know what they did. And then more cops and more cops and more cops show up.”

“People ignore this kind of stuff,” she told the publication, adding that the men had “never raised their voices” and “never did anything remotely aggressive.” She continued, “They don’t believe that it happens. People are saying that there must be more to this story. There is not. This would never happen to someone who looks like me. People don’t believe black people when they say this stuff happens. It does. They want to know the extenuating circumstances. There are none.”

The men were never charged with anything and were later released.

Following the incident, both the Philadelphia Police Department and Starbucks announced they would be doing separate internal investigations. Starbucks also publicly apologized to the two men, with CEO Kevin Johnson addressing the “reprehensible outcome” in an open letter.

Starbucks has since told reporters that the manager of the store who called police on the two men no longer works for the company.
