Catt Sadler Is Done Looking In the Rearview Mirror: 'I'm Only Moving Forward'

While thousands of people hit the streets on the East Coast this afternoon to protest President Trump’s administration and come together for social and political change for the second year in a row, celebrities three hours behind on the West Coast were just getting started.

In Los Angeles, we hit the city’s Women’s March and caught up with former E! News co-anchor Catt Sadler, who was joined by other celebrity speakers like Natalie Portman, Allison Janney, Viola Davis, and more on stage.

Wearing a Rebecca Minkoff “Grl Pwr” sweater, Sadler, who recently walked away to much fanfare from her E! News job after finding out her male co-host was making double her salary, tells Glamour that this year’s march has particular meaning.

“It’s weird being on the other side,” she says. “I am humbled and I am honored to be on the stage with some of my heroes today…I don’t have it all figured out, but I now know that I have to use my voice like I did. And that’s what so much of this is about: women refusing to remain silent. Hear our voice.”

For Sadler, that means using her platform to help other women fight and achieve equal pay in the workplace. “I’m hearing from women saying I am going to walk away tomorrow or I’m going to go into my bosses office. I am going to ask what my male counterpart is making,” she says.

And though the mom of two wants to correspond with every single woman who’s reached out, she’s well aware of the time constraint. “That is why I want to stay out here and continue to shine a light,” she says. “It is not my story. It is one of millions. It just so happens that I have somewhat of a platform so I am using my voice for those that can’t.”

If you find yourself in Sadler’s former position and are inspired by her bravery, here’s what you should do. “If you’re stuck, it’s about engineering a really nice exit strategy,” she says. “You keep your head down, you do what you’ve got to do, but there are really good companies and places that you can call home where it will be different. I think, with every day that goes by, and the more we expose what is happening, I think change will happen.”

Sadler, unsurprisingly, isn’t interested in going back to her old gig, even if they offered her equal pay the second go-around. “I’m not looking in the rearview mirror anymore. I’m only moving forward,” she says.

As for the rumors surrounding an E! News boycott on the red carpet? She’s pleading the fifth. “I can’t confirm or deny that, but I hear rumblings,” she says. But that doesn’t mean she’s not totally on board. “I have very bittersweet feelings about somewhere I was for 12 years, you know what I mean? But if I thought that could make lasting change and make a much bigger impact on other women and their workplace experiences by them doing that? Then yes, I suppose I would.”

Catt Sadler Fires Back at E!'s Claim That Jason Kennedy's Higher Salary Was Justified

Sunday evening’s Golden Globes red carpet felt like a longtime-coming reckoning for E! News as several actresses spoke out in support of Catt Sadler following her departure from the network because of a pay-disparity dispute. And now the former anchor has fired back herself at her former employer, which recently claimed that the disparity in pay between Sadler and former colleague Jason Kennedy was somehow justified.

On Tuesday, while speaking to reporters during the Television Critics Association press tour, NBCU Lifestyle president Frances Berwick spoke openly about Sadler’s decision to leave E! after learning she made nearly half of cohost Kennedy’s salary. Berwick said she “wanted to set the record straight” that Sadler and Kennedy’s salaries couldn’t be fairly compared as the pair had “different roles” at the network. Berwick went on to justify the pay gap by explaining that Sadler and Kennedy had different amounts of airtime and different focuses altogether. “Our employees’ salaries are based on their roles and their expertise, regardless of gender,” Berwick said, following up with, “Catt was focused on daytime. Jason Kennedy is on prime evening news, plus red carpet.”

But in an interview today with The Hollywood Reporter, Sadler vehemently denied these claims by Berwick. According to Sadler, comparing Kennedy’s involvement with the network against her own would be comparing “apples to apples.” She continued, “We came to the network at the same time and did similar jobs. For people to use the argument that Giuliana somehow made more money than Jason, that comparison doesn’t work. They’re apples and oranges. She joined before him, she was managing editor, she had multiple shows on the network. It’s unfortunate that people who don’t work there are trying to be the voice for the network. The only story I can tell is my truth, and the truth speaks for itself.”

Back in December in the initial post on her website announcing her separation with E!, Sadler wrote, “I have two decades experience in broadcasting and started at the network the very same year as my close friend and colleague that I adore. My team and I asked for what I know I deserve and were denied repeatedly.”

Celebrities Stand in Solidarity with Former E! News Host Catt Sadler

On the heels of Catt Sadler’s sudden—and for some, shocking—departure from E! News Wednesday, many female celebrities have taken to social media to commend Sadler on her statement-making exit, applauding her for shining a much-needed light on wage inequity and gender biases in Hollywood.

Earlier this week, the TV host left the entertainment news program—on which she’s been a fixture for more than a decade—citing a “massive disparity in pay” with cohost Jason Kennedy and noting that her aforementioned male colleague made nearly double her own salary.

Since then, stars from Jennifer Lawrence to Olivia Munn have voiced their support for the former E! News host. On Wednesday, Lawrence posted an article from Sadler’s blog in which the former E! star penned about her departure; alongside the article, Lawrence writes words of encouragement for Sadler, applauding her candor. See for yourself, below:

Actress Jessica Chastain also chimed in on Twitter, voicing her dismay for this blatant injustice and calling on companies to do better:

“It’s so disappointing to find out that @enews—a network that depends on female viewers—felt your value was worth only half of your male counterpart,” Olivia Munn wrote in a Tweet on Wednesday. She followed up with: “It’s not easy to do what you did. I’m so proud of you for it.”

Outlander‘s Caitriona Balfe also joined Munn in rebuking E! Entertainment for “their lack of respect,” calling the network “absolutely shameful”:

It seems Sadler’s powerful and poignant departure has not gone unnoticed, or more importantly, unvalued—especially among women in Hollywood, who for so long have felt the brunt of the wage gap’s villainy. “Our actions must be in alignment with our beliefs,” Sadler responded to the outpouring of support she received on social media. “As painful as it was to leave, I have been empowered by so many other courageous women. It made doing the right thing my only choice.”

Right on, Catt.

Catt Sadler Leaves 'E!' After Learning Her Male Co-Host Earned Double Her Salary

If you tune into E! for some celebrity news over the next few days, you might notice that Catt Sadler, one of the network’s most popular and busiest hosts, won’t be gracing the small screen. And it’s for a very unfortunate reason.

As reported by People, Catt has decided to leave E! owing to a large pay disparity with her current E! News co-host, Jason Kennedy—specifically, that Jason was earning double the amount as she was for the same job. “Up until this point, I mean it really has been a dream job. Literally a dream job. I’m from Indiana, born and raised, and I had my sights set on E! and I’ve seen the world. I’ve had the best experiences,” Catt said in a statement. “I’ve gotten incredibly close with all of my coworkers. It’s like a family here and it’s been beautiful for the majority of my run. I pinch myself every day the job that I get to do. I have so much fun. It has almost been surreal. But then, this year happened.”

Specifically, 2017 brought forth a two-hour live daily show for Catt, Daily Pop, as well as her regular gig as co-host of the mega-popular E! News. When it was time to negotiate a new contract going into the new year, it was then she realized that “my male equivalent at the network who I started with the same year and have come up with doing essentially similar jobs, if not the same job, wasn’t just making a little bit more than me but was making double my salary and has been for several years.” When negotiations proved not to be fruitful for a pay increase that was equivalent to Jason’s, Catt then decided to leave.

“That was really hard to swallow, but you know information is supposed to be power and when my team began negotiations knowing what we knew, that was the barometer in which I expected to be paid, based on the law and based on what I know to be fair,” Catt explained. “And what I believe in my heart of hearts is reasonable … I’m a single mom of two kids. I’ve given my all to this network. I’ve sacrificed time away from my family and I have dedicated my entire career to this network. And when you learn something like that, it makes you feel very small and underappreciated and undervalued.”

What does the future hold for Catt? She’s not sure, but promises her fans will see her soon in some capacity—perhaps on a new network, even.
