10 Times Alex Rodriguez Was Jennifer Lopez's Biggest Fan

I understand Alex Rodriguez is an important baseball player, but he’s also Jennifer Lopez‘s Instagram boyfriend, which is way more prestigious. Seriously, swinging a bat on some diamond-shaped field is nowhere near as cool as being J.Lo’s personal photographer. Just being in her presence is an honor, and Rodriguez 100 percent understands this. That’s why he takes every opportunity to gush about Lopez, either on Instagram or in interviews or just by admiring her lovingly on the red carpet.

Below, check out just a handful of times Rodriguez shouted his love for Lopez to the rooftops. Wouldn’t you do the same?

Alex Rodriguez Found a Photo of Jennifer Lopez He Had Autographed 20 Years Ago, and It's a National Treasure

Lovebirds Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez are clearly obsessed with each other. (See: all their coordinated outfits, their adorable public affection at award shows.) How do we find a love like theirs in our lifetimes, which are but a blink of the eye in the course of human history? The answer, apparently, is fate.

On Friday, A.Rod posted quite the throwback on his Instagram. It took us back twenty years ago, when an already-major pop star known as Jenny From the Block autographed a glam shot for a young, up-and-coming baseball player by the name of Alexander Emmanuel Rodriguez. We can only assume that the shimmering wattage of Jenny’s skin illuminated served as an unassuming beacon of destiny. And (J.)Lo, a love was born.

“#TBT to almost 20 years ago when a big time global pop superstar signed a pic for a young ball player #lifecanbeafunnythingsometimes #pictureperfect #keepsake #jlo,” Rodriguez eloquently captioned his priceless photo. Check it out:

It wasn’t just A.Rod who was thrilled with this discovery, which definitely belongs in the Smithsonian (and not in storage.) Lopez left a comment on the Instagram photo, writing “Omg!! Who found that!!???” She reposted it to her own feed, once again expressing her surprise at what we should all agree is the newest national treasure:”Wow!! Had to repost!!! He found this cleaning out storage!!”

Blessed be destiny; blessed be the light of their love.

Gina Rodriguez Just Confirmed She's Engaged to Joe LoCicero

It’s official, people: Gina Rodriguez is engaged.

The Jane the Virgin actress confirmed to Us Weekly on Tuesday (August 7) that she and actor Joe LoCicero are planning to tie the knot. “I have a very, very special man in my life. I am engaged. You’re the first people that I’ve told,” Rodriguez told the magazine. “It’s wonderful blessings like that, that make me realize that if I have an opportunity to help someone else, I want to.”

She continued, “I am marrying a feminist. I am marrying a man that is incredible and loving and understanding and kind and patient. I’m marrying a really incredible human being. That what it is. I met a human that like, knows he’s a human.”

Us Weekly first reported on July 30 that Rodriguez and LoCicero are engaged; however, neither of them has said anything until now. Rumors of their engagement sparked, though, last month when Rodriguez uploaded a photo of herself rocking what looked like a diamond ring on that finger. The same ring is on display in the photo, below:

Rodriguez and LoCicero met on the set of Jane the Virgin. “He thought I was being nice to him because I am nice to everyone that comes on the show,” she said in May 2017 on Live With Kelly and Ryan. “So he thought I was just being super sweet to him and I thought he was just being sweet on me because I’m the lead.” Their relationship bloomed six months after that, however, when they bumped into each other at the gym.

Congrats, you two!

Gina Rodriguez Just Gave a College Scholarship to an Undocumented Latinx Student

Gina Rodriguez is an absolute pro at making us cry, from her beautiful speech at the 2015 Golden Globes to countless heartwarming moments on Jane the Virgin. And on Tuesday, she picked up the mantle again when she announced a very special scholarship for an undocumented Latinx student.

Funds for the scholarship come from an unusual place: the budget for Jane the Virgin‘s Emmy promotion. Instead of spending what Rodriguez calls “an insane amount of money” to do a “bizarre dance” to be in the running for an award this year (including putting on campaigning events and providing branded promotional swag), she convinced the show’s network, The CW, to set up a four-year college tuition scholarship for an undocumented Latinx student, The Hollywood Reporter reports.

“Our show has always jumped at any opportunity to help me do something for the Latinx community,” the star tells THR. “So I asked my showrunner, Jennie [Snyder Urman], if we could do something different with the money this year.”

“It’s taboo to talk about the money being spent, but it’s the reality,” Rodriguez continued on the culture of campaigning that goes on in Hollywood. “I think sharing this might inspire other people to do something similar. You can desire recognition and, at the same time, decide to not play in the confines of the game as it’s set up.”

Rodriguez partnered with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Los Angeles to find the student for the award. THR notes the young woman will be attending Princeton University in the fall.

The decision to make the scholarship go to an undocumented student is consistent with the show’s history of shining a light on the Latinx experience of living in the United States. Since its first season, Jane the Virgin has addressed how immigration issues impact the show’s central family, most notably a storyline about Jane’s grandmother Alba, who seeks citizenship after being in the country for 40 years without documentation.

Paying off student debt is a problem Rodriguez has been public about facing herself. In 2017, she revealed it took her 11 years after graduating to pay off the college loans she’d taken out to attend New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. (She posted her final payment the day she was nominated for her second Golden Globe Award, according to People.)

And while she’s not following the traditional route of campaigning for an Emmy, Rodriguez is still in the running for the award in September. Jane the Virgin‘s fifth season will premiere on The CW in January 2019.

Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez Had to Evacuate the Restaurant During Their First Date

Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez’s relationship all started with a little tap on the shoulder. In their joint cover story for the December 2017 issue of Vanity Fair, J.Lo and A-Rod (a.k.a. J-Rod) shared the story of how they struck up a romance more than a decade after their first meeting.

“It was just one of those things where you feel compelled to do something you wouldn’t normally do,” Lopez said of her approaching Rodriguez while they were lunching at the same restaurant in Beverly Hills last winter. “I almost yelled out ‘Alex,’ but I am the shyest person when it comes to things like that,” she said. “I could literally just have walked away, but I walk over and tap him on the shoulder and say ‘Hey.'” Lopez said that she was dressed “like a boy,” in character as NYPD Detective Harlee Santos for her show Shades of Blue, but Rodriguez took one look at her and said, “You look so beautiful.”

Hours after their chance meeting, Rodriguez called Lopez and invited her to dinner. When they met up a few days later at the Hotel Bel Air, she asked if he remembered the time they had met on the field at a New York Mets game 12 years before. Though she told him, “You don’t have to say you remember if you don’t,” he replied, “Shea Stadium, during a subway series.”

“He was sitting there in his white shirt, very confident and manly, but then he was just so talkative!” Lopez said. “I think he thought I was going to be this loud person, but I’m not. I just listen. So he’s talking, talking about his plans, about how he had just retired from baseball, about how he saw himself getting married again, all these things you wouldn’t normally talk about on a first date.” She continued, “I don’t know if he thought it was a date. I thought it was a date. Then I knew he was nervous because he asked me if I wanted a drink. I said, ‘No, I don’t drink,’ and he asked if I minded if he had one. He was nervous, and it was really cute.”

Rodriguez confirmed that he was, indeed, nervous—but mostly because he wasn’t sure about her relationship status. “I didn’t know if it was a date,” he said. “Maybe we were seeing each other at night because of her work schedule. I went in uneasy, not knowing her situation.” Luckily, he said, “She told me around the third or fourth inning that she was single. I had to get up and go re-adjust my thoughts. I went to the bathroom and got enough courage to send her a text.” The text, they reveal, said, “You look sexy AF.”

Just as things were heating up, however, the restaurant literally started heating up. “It took a turn. The fire alarm went off, and we had to evacuate,” Lopez said. “No, really. The fire alarm went off!” Despite the interruption, the first date went well, and the duo have been going strong ever since: They made their red carpet debut at the Met Gala in May, co-hosted a telethon to benefit Puerto Rico earlier this month, and are now reportedly house-hunting together.

J-Rod opened up about their relationship to VF even further. “We are very much twins,” A-Rod, 42, said. “We’re both Leos; we’re both from New York; we’re both Latino and about 20 other things.” J.Lo, 48, echoed, “I understand him in a way that I don’t think anyone else could, and he understands me in a way that no one else could ever.” She explained: “In his 20s, he came into big success with the biggest baseball contract [at the time]. I had a No. 1 movie and a No. 1 album and made history. We both had ups and downs and challenges in our 30s, and by our 40s we’d both been through so much. And more importantly than anything, we had both done a lot of work on ourselves.”

Gina Rodriguez Is Producing a New Show About an Empowering, Secret Women's Social Media Group

Jane the Virgin star Gina Rodriguez is a fierce advocate for women: among other efforts, she’s spoken out against the pay gap and and encouraged women to own their sexuality. And as a dynamic leader in a male-dominated entertainment world, she’s using her power to bring a new female-driven drama to television—and to be honest, it sounds amazing.

The series, potentially titled Femme, “follows four millennial women from different walks of life who become unlikely friends and fierce allies after meeting online in a secret feminist social media group,” according to Variety. “They form a sisterhood army in the real world to support each other through both serious and humorous crises and to help other women in need.”

Sisterhood army? We can get behind that. It’s timely, too, considering women have been using social media more than ever as a platform to speak out about feminist issues, like the fight against sexual harassment and assault.

Rodriguez and her production company will executive-produce the show for the CW as part of Rodriguez’s deal with CBS. To make the news even better, two writers from the smart, hilarious show Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, will write and produce the show. (Their other credits include Cougar Town and One Tree Hill, so yeah, this is set up to be SO good.)

Lest we think that’s Rodriguez’s only project, she currently has two other shows in the works with CBS and the CW: She’s producing a drama called Have Mercy, which follows a Latina doctor who immigrates to Miami and can no longer practice, so she opens clinic in her apartment to help the community. The other is a dramedy called Illegal, based on the life of co-executive producer and writer Rafael Agustin. The show is about an American high school student who finds out he is undocumented. And, in April, Rodriguez was also confirmed to be working with Netflix to voice the title character of the 1990s classic reboot of Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego?.

It looks like we’re about to see a whole lot coming from Rodriguez as she works to give more opportunities to female writers, producers, and actresses—and we are so here for all of it.
