Naomi Campbell Somehow Just Landed Her First Beauty Campaign


Would you believe it if we told you that supermodel Naomi Campbell has never had a beauty contract until now? It sounds bonkers given that she’s reigned supreme over magazine covers and runways for nearly 30 years, but—somehow—it’s true.

Thankfully, this egregious situation has been rectified as Campbell has just been named the new face of Nars Cosmetics for its spring 2019 campaign. “Naomi is a living icon and brings such strong personality to the camera,” says François Nars, the company’s founder who also photographed Campbell for the brand. “She and I are like family. I have known her since the very beginning of her career. From the start, I have admired her, her beauty, and her style.”

“Very excited to be the new face of NARS Cosmetics ? Shot by my dear friend François Nars✨,” Campbell wrote announcing the news to her 6.1 million Instagram followers.

It’s rather mind-boggling that at 48, Campbell is still experiencing “firsts” in her incredible career. Of course, she is one of the original supermodels who rose to international superstardom in the ’80s and ’90s. And she’s been breaking barriers ever since. In 1988, she was the first black woman to appear on the cover of French Vogue and in 1989 she was the first black model to grace American Vogue‘s coveted September issue.

Campbell has also long been a voice for diversity and inclusion in the fashion and beauty worlds. And the fact that she’s only now getting her first beauty campaign in 2018 is evidence that more work is necessary. “I’ve never done [a beauty campaign] for anyone. People say, ‘Oh you’ve got beautiful skin’ and yet I’ve never done one,” Campbell told The Evening Standard in 2017. The writer of the piece also noted, “She gives me a look that says, ‘You know why.'” Mmhmm.

Jeffrey Campbell and Curve Model La’shaunae Steward Are Releasing Size-Inclusive Shoes


Footwear brand Jeffrey Campbell is addressing a blind spot in its own inventory: shoes designed to fit all bodies.

On Tuesday, the brand announced it was teaming up with curve model La’shaunae Steward to launch a capsule collection of size-inclusive shoes. In an Instagram post about the collaboration, Jeffrey Campbell promised five styles “made to fit your every curve.”

“When we say our shoes are made for everybody we truly mean everyBODY,” the brand captioned an image of Steward from a Girlboss editorial, in which she’s wearing one of the shoes from the collaboration. “Stay tuned. ?”

In an interview with Refinery29, Steward explained that the seed was planted when she and her friend Sanam Sindh, Jeffrey Campbell’s creative director, were discussing the lack of boots on the market for plus-size customers. “I was telling her how a lot of the boots don’t fit thicker legs, and as my friend—who knows how the fashion world doesn’t celebrate fat brown women enough—she saw this as an opportunity for me, an underappreciated curve model,” she said.

The model pointed out that even when brands do attempt to be size-inclusive, they don’t make an effort to create fashionable or attractive products. “So many brands never care about their fat customers,” she told Refinery29. “Most plus-size stores have the ugliest clothes and wide-fitting shoes.”

This capsule marks a huge step forward for size-inclusive shopping, according to Steward—especially considering the reach of an affordable, trend-driven footwear brand such as Jeffrey Campbell. “I grew up never being able to afford the things I like and for [a brand I’ve] loved since a young teenager to believe in me and to acknowledge me is amazing,” Steward said.

Steward is also a body positivity activist who hopes to break barriers in the fashion industry, according to Refinery29—and this collaboration is just the beginning. “[I want to see] girls who actually look like me in high-fashion and walking the runways,” she told Refinery29. “Representation is so important. So many models are glamazons who are 5’7″ or taller. They have small waists and perfect thighs. [For plus-size models, they’re] a size 16 at the biggest. And these are the women ‘representing’ all fat women. I’m 5’3″ and bigger, [and I] also deserve the spotlight!”

Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell Reunited on the Louis Vuitton Runway


Back in September, the fashion world collectively lost their minds when a crew of OG supermodels reunited at Versace’s Spring 2018 show for a dazzling finale. So imagine the scene at Paris Fashion Week Men’s, when two of the most iconic names in fashion, Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell, walked down the same catwalk for the first time in years. Yup, it was major.

This wasn’t any ordinary fashion show: Moss and Campbell came together again to send off Kim Jones, who, after seven years at the helm of menswear at Louis Vuitton, presented his final collection in Paris. In matching monogrammed trench coats, they made a special, surprise finale appearance, reminiscent of that Versace moment from the fall. And while their ’90s runway appearances are the stuff (or struts?) of legends, the model duo proved they still have it—and can show the new generation a thing or two about how to dominate the catwalk.

While Campbell hasn’t been absent from Fashion Week lineups for long (she most recently walked a few shows during the Spring 2018 womenswear season), more time has passed since Moss made her way down the runway—in fact, this is her first official appearance since Louis Vuitton’s Fall 2013 presentation, five years ago, per Vogue. It’s been even longer since both Campbell and Moss appeared as part of the same show, though, despite basically running the circuit in the ’90s and early aughts, which makes this reunion all the more incredible.

The casting came from Jones himself, it seems. On Instagram, he shared backstage Polaroids of Campbell and Moss, explaining how their appearance at his final Louis Vuitton show “was really a thank you and reference to @themarcjacobs early 2000s Vuitton and the fact that he was the one that gave me the opportunity to be @louisvuitton”. (Jones ascended to the top menswear position at the company when Jacobs was its creative director.)

More than simply marking the end of Jones’ time at Louis Vuitton with a grand finale—really, there’s no better way to go out than with two legends wearing in your designs—casting Moss and Campbell makes a strong point about age inclusion on the runway: At 44 and 47 years old, respectively, they’re older than the majority of models we see cast in fashion shows and ad campaigns. Their continued presence in the industry confirms what we already knew: Models can kill it on the runway at any age.
