This Is Us Season Four Fall Finale Recap: Isaac Aptaker Breaks Down Those Big Twists


Yeah, exactly. We had to make sure because we would get confused when we were writing it and we would have Rebecca get a text from Randall and then say, “Oh, no, no, no, wait, wait, wait, that’s the wrong timeline! She wouldn’t be getting that text!” It’s just a process of constantly remembering where you are in space and time to make sure that it all makes sense when you look back on it.

We know Rebecca lives another 10 or 12 years into the future, so how much will the show explore the journey of how her health progresses?

That’s a really good question. We’re committed to telling this story really accurately and as medically honestly as possible. We always have our experts and our consultants, both anecdotally people who have experienced it personally and also doctors and experts in the field. That said, we also are very aware of how sad this story is. Whenever we tell a sad story, we’re always looking for the silver lining for the moments of joy, for the moments of triumph. We’re going to be both accurate and as uplifting as possible while telling something that is incredibly, incredibly sad.

When is the next time we’ll revisit the storylines set nine months from now?

That’s the Big Three’s 40th birthday, which every season has started with, so that will be the beginning of our fifth season. It’s not going to be a super long wait to get the answers to all of the questions that we just flash-forwarded to. It’s really by the end of this season and the very beginning of next that we’ll be caught up to that moment.

In the scenes set nine months from now, Kate’s wedding ring is still on. Is it accurate to say that even though she might be having trouble with her marriage, so far it’s still intact?

Yeah. I think even if things are bad with Toby, nine months is an incredibly fast time to go from married to divorced, especially when you have a young child. I think people should definitely be aware and concerned about the fact that Toby wasn’t in that flash-forward but, yes, she is wearing a ring. I think that would be awfully fast for them to be divorced.

Riverdale Season 4, Episode 1 Recap: Shannen Doherty Tributes Luke Perry in Cameo Role


Warning: Spoilers ahead.

Many eyes were on Riverdale‘s season four premiere Wednesday night, as both fans and critics waited to see how it would pay tribute to Luke Perry, who passed away in March after suffering a stroke. Perry, perhaps best known for portraying Dylan McKay on Beverly Hills, 90210, co-starred on Riverdale as Archie Andrews’s father, Fred. He was a beloved character—a moral compass, of sorts, in what’s otherwise an incredibly dark and dramatic world. Tonight’s episode, appropriately titled “In Memoriam,” honored that.

Early in the episode we learn the cause of Fred’s death: He was driving a few towns over and stopped to help a woman whose car tires blew out. While attempting to fix her car, he was struck by an ongoing vehicle and sustained fatal injuries. The person driving the car didn’t stop after hitting Fred. At first, we think the culprit is a grown man named George Augustine, who Archie goes to confront in a fit of rage. But there’s a twist: George is actually covering for his young son, who secretly took the family’s car out and struck Fred by accident.

Archie is overcome with even more emotion when he finds out how his father died. Essentially, Fred passed away as he lived on Riverdale: helping people. What’s more: George covered up for his son exactly how Fred would’ve for Archie had he done something similar. There’s a resonance to how the show-runners wrote Fred’s death that deserves to be applauded.

Also commendable (and powerful) was including Shannen Doherty, Perry’s 90210 co-star, in the episode. She plays a small but pivotal role as the woman who Fred pulled over to help. Doherty appears midway through the episode, dropping flowers off on the side of the road where Fred was hit. “He saved my life,” she tells Archie. “If he hadn’t done what he did, there’s no way I’d be here right now. I know that.”

Many Beverly Hills, 90210 fans were moved by Doherty’s cameo. Here are just a few Twitter reactions:

The episode, overall, was a respectful, heartfelt, and warm homage to a Hollywood icon. It makes sense that Riverdale creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa waited until now to address Luke Perry’s death on the show. Doing it in the spring, so soon after Perry passed, would’ve felt like a rush job—like the show was trying to fit something in at the last minute. But Perry was too important of a figure, both on Riverdale and beyond, to get a quick tribute.

‘This Is Us’ Season 4 Episode 2 Recap: Should We Be Concerned About Kate?


After a divisive season premiere, This Is Us got back to its roots tonight with an entire hour focused on the Pearsons past and present—and a return to the neighborhood pool.

In the early ’90s, we see Rebecca and Jack struggle with the idea that their preteen kids are growing up and branching out on their own. Back in present day, Beth and Randall are dealing with Deja wanting more independence and Tess opting for a whole new look. Meanwhile, Toby and Kate work with a specialist to help baby Jack—who is blind—feel comfortable and safe in his home while they secretly (and not so secretly) try to manage the stress of raising a child with special needs.

As for Kevin, he bonds with baby Jack; Kate urges him to take a movie role in Chicago because focusing on his sobriety and working will make him a better uncle to Jack. What Kate doesn’t know is that Kevin has been helping their uncle Nicky with bail money. She also doesn’t know that her husband is lying about what he’s doing when he leaves the apartment, saying he’s going to the grocery store when he’s really at the gym, but that’s a bigger story that could have long-lasting implications.

The episode left a lot of questions unanswered—this is This Is Us, after all—so we asked executive producer and co-showrunner Isaac Aptaker to fill us in on what’s ahead for the Pearson clan. Turns out, there’s some cause for concern.

Glamour: Jennifer Morrison wasn’t in this week’s episode. My theory is that Cassidy could be Nicky’s daughter, or she’ll eventually become the mother of Kevin’s son.

Isaac Aptaker: Let’s hope not both! [Laughs.] We will start getting those answers next week. We will revisit Cassidy and what that dynamic is. She’ll be in Nicky’s world in this next episode in some way.

On tonight’s episode, we see Tess get a major haircut. Eris Baker [who plays Tess] actually chopped her hair for the storyline….

She brought in photos of Zoë Kravitz as inspiration from when Zoë had short hair and nailed it. She sent us a lot of photos from Zoë’s Instagram page.

How will this new haircut shape Tess’s story for this upcoming season, in terms of her personal growth?

She’s been coming out to her immediate family in past episodes. Now she’s living in a brand-new city and starting at a brand-new school. She’s trying to figure out how she wants to be perceived, how she wants to portray herself to the world, and she’s decided that she feels most comfortable with this haircut. But then, at the end of the episode, as she’s getting ready for school and packing her book bag the night before, the reality sets in. She looks in the mirror and has a bit of self-doubt of whether it was too bold of a choice. She’s wondering if this is who she really wants to be on her first day of school. Eris is so great because it’s a complicated story.

The Bachelorette Season 15, Episode 13 Recap: Now That's an Ending


When Jed arrives at the rose ceremony, he comes with his guitar in hand. Reader, I swear I screamed, “NO HE DID NOT” at the sight. “Talking’s hard sometimes for me,” he tells Hannah, before launching into a song with lyrics such as “we always knew it’s me and you” and “baby, time stands still for us.” Hannah loves it.

“I’ve always prayed for my future husband,” she says. She’s questioned why some relationships turned out the way they did, but now she knows it was all to lead her to Jed. “I have lived 25 years of my life without you,” he says, “and I don’t want to go another day without you in my life.” He gets down on one knee, she says yes.

“We did it!” Hannah cheers. “That’s awesome,” Jed mumbles.

Of course, that’s not the end of the story. When we return from a commercial break, we’re treated to a few behind-the-scenes home videos of Hannah and Jed together after the proposal. “I thought I was getting someone sweet and honest,” Hannah says. “And that’s not the case.” The day after the proposal, she reveals, Jed admitted that he had been “hanging out” with someone the week before he left for the show. He claimed he had broken it off, but they were never boyfriend and girlfriend. Hannah was annoyed, but she thought it was something they could work through. And then that People article came out.

“I love the person I got engaged to,” Hannah says. “I don’t know how I feel about this person.”

And so, the Bachelorette producers have arranged for the two to meet up in Los Angeles so she can confront him about it. Right away, Hannah asks what really happened. Jed’s version of events is this: He was hanging out with this woman, they hooked up a few times, and then went on a weekend getaway together because he “got a cabin for free.” They stopped by his parents’ home on the way back from the trip, but only because they lived near the cabin. He never “put a label” on their relationship or called her his girlfriend—and it’s clear he thinks that absolves him. Oh, and he was sleeping with other women during this time.

It gets worse: This woman threw Jed a whole-ass surprise birthday party that involved all of his friends and family, as well as a trip to the Bahamas (from her parents!) as a gift. “And you don’t call that dating?” Hannah asks, incredulous.

According to Jed, he told her he was recruited for The Bachelorette and was thrown off that she would still want to be with somebody who was considering going on a dating reality show. Hannah presses him, and he admits that, OK, he might have told her he was only doing it as “a music thing.” Plus, he says, he never thought he’d actually like the Bachelorette.

The Bachelorette Season 15, Episode 12 Recap: And Then There Were Two…


Of course, Tyler instantly charms the fam. “Tyler seems to be the real deal,” Robert says. Hannah’s parents tell her as much. “I think he has good intentions,” Robert says. “There’s so much about him I like,” Suzanne gushes. Their confidence in Tyler inspires Hannah to tell him she’s falling in love with him. The smile on his face at this news! My God. It’s like staring into the sun, or staring at a really hot guy smiling.

The family has to meet Jed the next day, but they’re skeptical. Tyler set the bar so high—how could Jed be better? (Answer: He cannot.) And Jed seems a little nervous as soon as he arrives, stumbling over his words and giving sort of rambling answers to their questions. When Robert asks Jed about his goals in life, he talks about his songwriting career (without mentioning, oh, how Hannah might fit into that). Then Robert asks Jed if he might be able to financially provide for Hannah (which, ugh, the patriarchy). Jed gives a vague answer about wanting various income streams, then mentions that he recently signed a deal to write a jingle for a dog food company. To him, that was a sign his career’s on the right track.

However, it’s Hannah’s mom who has the best shade. When she sits down with Jed, she comments that he’s been in Nashville “a while” without hitting it big. Later, she tells her daughter, “He has qualities.” Qualities! Not good, not bad, just qualities. I think Suzanne must be feeling very whelmed about Jed.

Ultimately, though, Suzanne says it’s Hannah’s decision. That said, she would pick Tyler because, I mean, she has eyes and ears. “I knew this was going to happen,” Hannah complains, sounding every bit an angsty teenager being told she can’t go out on a Friday night. “I’m telling you what I see as a mom,” Suzanne replies. “I want to see you with somebody that will love you like you deserve to be loved.”

Hannah’s dad tells her that Tyler was more direct with his answers. Hannah presses her dad to be more specific, so he complains that Jed thinks “the dog food jingle” is enough to provide for Hannah. LOL. Hannah points out that she plans on being successful, so it doesn’t matter whether or not Jed is the breadwinner. (Woo, Hannah!) Hannah’s dad, however, insists “the man of the house still has his obligations.”

The Bachelorette Season 15, Episode 11 Recap: The Men Tell All


We don’t find out who gets the roses, though—that comes next week. Instead, we go back to the studio for the rest of the Men Tell All special. Luke is invited out on stage first, to a smattering of applause. I could get into the specifics of every insane thing he says, but really it’s more of the same: His words were misconstrued, Hannah wasn’t giving him an opportunity to speak, blah blah blah.

“I don’t get to see anything that happens with Hannah on the other dates,” he says at one point. “I don’t get to see her straddle or mount or swap saliva with other guys. That’s not easy, and I wouldn’t want someone that I’m literally getting fitted for a suit to propose in and I’m finding out that the night before my one-on-one time with her she’s having sex. And that’s not something I want in a future wife.”

Every time Chris asks a question, Luke takes an excruciating amount of time to answer. But the dead air doesn’t make his responses any better—he still keeps spouting the same bullshit. Luke is willing to admit he was arrogant…but not much else. “If I could go back, I wouldn’t change a thing,” he says. (Until exactly one commercial break later, when he walks that back: “Obviously, if I could go back I would change a lot.”)

It’s all very bad (and annoying that he’s even given a platform for this long), but it gets worse when Luke says he felt like he was on a “rescue mission” for Hannah. At that, Devin comes onto stage unannounced. “My blood has been boiling,” he tells Luke about watching from backstage. “There are men who want a strong, independent woman. And there are men who want a woman they can control. I feel, right now, that you you are the man that wants to control a woman so you can feel better about yourself. I’m sorry but that’s not a man.”

I’ve been watching The Bachelorette for a long time, and I honestly can’t remember seeing a contestant call out another dude so plainly for being misogynistic. It’s incredible—made even more surprising by the fact that Devin wasn’t known for being a particularly outspoken member of the cast this season. “The only person who needed rescuing was Hannah from you,” he says before leaving the stage.

Luke replies, “The last thing that I want and the last thing I’ll ever do is control a woman.” But then immediately says, “Although a man is supposed to lead and guide a woman in a relationship.” Reader, I gasped.

When the rest of the guys—minus Peter, Luke, and Jed—join from backstage, they immediately take Luke to task. Mike says it’s clear Luke has learned nothing and calls him a narcissist and misogynist. “I think your future wife is going to be a prisoner of you if you don’t learn how to change,” he says. Even sweet, doe-eyed Connor tells Luke to fuck off. “You’re a liar, manipulator, controlling, and you honestly are a psychopath.”
