Taylor Swift Now Supports Queer People, But Her Messaging Needs Some Work

Taylor Swift has seemingly caused the gay apocalypse this week, with queer people running through the streets, banging pots and pans, and clashing over their feelings about her new music video, “You Need to Calm Down,” which dropped Monday. The video is the latest rainbow-painted moment in Swift’s new Lover era and features strong pro-gay messaging, including numerous cameos from LGBTQ+ stars like the Queer Eye Fab 5, Laverne Cox, Billy Porter, Ellen DeGeneres, and Hayley Kiyoko. At the end of the clip, Swift has a message urging fans to sign a petition demanding Senate support on the Equality Act.

Discourse over the video among queer people is, unsurprisingly, a mixed bag. Some fans are thrilled to have such a major pop act use her platform to effect potential change. Others feel that Swift isn’t reading the room; that a heterosexual-identifying person saying, “This is how you do gay rights, bitch,” feels silly in 2019. Especially since Swift was criticized heavily for being apolitical her entire career—even when the country could have used her voice in 2016. I understand how words like exploitative and opportunistic are making their way into discussions about the new video, and about Swift’s sudden, aggressive LGBTQ+ support (see also Swift’s surprising gay fans with a performance at Stonewall).

Then there’s the suggestion that Swift has been baiting fans with intimations that she, herself, is coming out, which is all Internet hearsay at this point. Theories about Swift’s alleged queerness have always existed—speculation goes back as far as 2008, with rumors about Swift and her fiddle player, Emily Poe, being romantically involved. There’s also an entire corner of the internet that believes Swift and her former best friend, Karlie Kloss, were actually dating. Shit really hit the fan, though, in April when rumors about Swift’s planning a coming-out announcement tore through Twitter like a lesbian natural disaster. Seemingly everyone on gay Twitter was talking about it:

Everything gay Twitter has dissected and dubbed a queer clue—the Kaylor theories, the “bisexual hair” in the “Calm Down” video, posting the words “ME! Out now!”—is just subtext, allusions, teases. But “clues” are currency for Swift. For years she’s hidden secret messages in her music videos, social media, and album covers, and encouraged fans to decode them. So even though she’s never explicitly said, “I’m coming out,” she has absolutely given Swifties the okay to sleuth. That’s the only reason speculating about her sexuality doesn’t feel wholeheartedly gross or wrong. She knows fans will read into her imagery. Even still, it’s important to note that none of us is entitled to information about Swift’s personal life. However she chooses to identify—and chooses to talk about it—is valid and 100 percent her business.

Swift obviously hasn’t come out. Instead, she says she’s an ally, which she declared on Tumblr this weekend in response to rumors that she and Katy Perry would kiss in the video. In the post she defended herself as knowing the difference between “allyship” and baiting: “To be an ally is to understand the difference between advocating and baiting. Anyone trying to twist this positivity into something it isn’t needs to calm down.”

Here’s the thing, though: It would be a win for representation if Swift, arguably the biggest mainstream pop star in the world, came out. It’d prove, once and for all, that queerness isn’t shameful or weird. Yes, things are marginally better for queer people these days, but not everywhere. Gay marriage has been legalized, but the quality of life for a queer person is still mostly subpar, even in the most progressive areas. I was lucky to be born into a liberal family, and I currently live in Los Angeles, where I’m surrounded by queer people—but I still get nervous in every public space where I hold hands with my girlfriend. And after growing up in a conservative, Catholic, Republican hometown, I’m still chipping away at all the trauma and shame surrounding queerness that feels irreversibly lodged in my core.

Queer Eye Season 4: Everything We Know So Far

If seeing the Fab 5 in Taylor Swift’s latest music video made you realize just how much you miss them, Netflix has the best news: There is more Queer Eye on the horizon.

The show’s Twitter page shared a short video clip on Tuesday, June 18, letting the world know that the makeover mavericks will be back for season four on July 19. “Have you missed us? (We missed you too.) We’re back in Kansas City for Season 4, July 19,” the tweet reads.

And, as if that weren’t enough, Variety reports that the Emmy-nominated series didn’t get renewed for just one more season: All the guys are actually going to begin production on season five next week, and it’ll have a release date some time in 2020. This means Antoni Porowski, Bobby Berk, Karamo Brown, Tan France, and Jonathan Van Ness will be with us for a good long while.

Here’s everything we know so far about Queer Eye season four.

The show will take place in Missouri again. Last season was shot in Kansas City and other surrounding areas of Missouri. It looks like season four is going to explore that area a little longer, as the new episodes are all slated to take place there.

Before season three, the Kansas City mayor encouraged people to nominate nearby residents in need of a makeover. The city also put up billboards calling for nominations.

All five guys are coming back. We would riot in the streets if there were any changes to the cast. Luckily, according to the short clip the show posted on Twitter, all five members are featured in the latest season.

Claire Foy Was Denied Entry Into an Emmys Party, so a *Queer Eye* Guy Helped Her Out

We’ve seen the Queer Eye guys help people dress better, clean up their living spaces, gain confidence, and even propose to their significant others, but did you know that they also have the power to get A-list celebs into high-profile parties? Claire Foy does now, since Jonathan Van Ness did just that on Monday night, when the actress was reportedly struggling to gain admission to the annual post–Emmy Awards Governor’s Ball. That’s right: Queen Elizabeth II herself (kinda), who had accepted the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series mere hours before, was almost not allowed into an Emmys after-party.

The Good Samaritan move was shared on Twitter by The Hollywood Reporter‘s Chris Gardner, who watched it all go down. “Just witnessed crazy #EMMYS moment: Queen almost couldn’t get into Governors Ball. Claire Foy, best actress in drama winner, denied entry because of ripped ticket that prevented her team from entering back entrance until @jvn came to rescue after gushing over how much he loves her,” Gardner tweeted. As you can see in the photo Gardner attached to the post, Foy is literally carrying her Emmy in her hand, which should probably count for more than any ticket, ripped or not.

Regardless of these questionable ticketing policies, it appears that Foy was eventually able to enter the party, thanks in large part to Van Ness. The whole mix-up also gave Van Ness and Foy the chance to fawn over each other, and then share those incredible moments with the world. That night Van Ness shared a photo on Instagram of himself and the the Crown star—in coordinating white satin ensembles, no less—that appears to have been taken outside the party, either just before or after he salvaged Foy’s after-party plans.

The next day he uploaded a series of shots from the Emmys, including a video in which he appears to be recording a friendly message for one of Foy’s friends on her phone. Amid his proclaiming his love for all things British, Foy shouts, “This is the best thing that’s ever happened!” Couldn’t agree more.

Short-Sleeve Button-Up Shirts: The Best Queer Eye Inspired Picks

It’s a truth universally acknowledged that Netflix’s Queer Eye reboot can make even the most hard-hearted viewer teary-eyed. It’s also well-known that the series’ fashion expert, Tan France, has a penchant for a certain type of shirt—specifically, short-sleeved, printed, button-up blouses. And, after binge-watching the just-released second season, I’m finding myself not only reaching for the tissues, but also for my credit card.

Even if you’ve only watched a few episodes, you’ll quickly pick up on France’s go-to style tips for his transformation subjects (“heroes,” as they’re called on the show): a “pop of color” here, a fresh blazer there—and, if you want something a little funky, try a boldly-patterned short-sleeve shirt, styled with a “French tuck.”

Sixteen episodes deep, I kept coming back to France’s preferred garment, imagining what it would look like in my wardrobe. I tend to wear colorful dresses and polished blouses—but these boxy, button-down styles struck me as a solid pairing for my summer jeans. Plus, France himself wears them so well on the show. (I’m hardly the first and only person to develop an affinity for his very specific shirting after watching the show—Twitter is filled with fellow viewers who’ve adopted his signature look.) I like to think of it as “the Tan Fran Effect,” a unique phenomenon where, post-binge-watch, my online shopping carts are filled with short-sleeved shirts in cabana stripes, floral prints, and other patterns akin to his (and his mentees’) on-screen wardrobe. And lucky for me (not-so-lucky for my bank account), many brands share my recent infatuation for the silhouette, with plenty of summery options at every price point waiting to become a cornerstone of your summer #OOTD.

If you, too, find yourself with a sudden draw towards Tan France-inspired shirts, welcome to the club—we’re always down to talk Queer Eye.
