Maleficent: Mistress of Evil Review: This Fairy Tale Updates the Disney Princess in Subtle, Powerful Ways

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, Disney’s sequel to the 2014 retelling of Sleeping Beauty with Angelina Jolie that’s in theaters now, is sort of strange and dark for a fairy tale. And naturally, that’s what makes it so great. The movie covers a lot of things—motherhood, the loss of innocence, love, hate, immigration, power, magic—without losing focus. The costumes are, and I cannot stress this enough, excellent. And best of all, it honors the most enduring tropes of Disney fairy tales (spoiler: good triumphs over evil) while updating the princess narrative in subtle and powerful ways.

Just look at Aurora’s (Elle Fanning) story. She’s now 21 years old and engaged to Prince Philip. It’s hardly surprising or revolutionary that she’s marrying her first boyfriend, but we then learn they’ve been dating for five years. Five years! Compare that to the “love at first sight, married the next day” plot of, well, just pick a movie. Aurora is no sleepy princess, either. She’s the strong-willed barefoot queen of the Moors, the forest wonderland where magical creatures live, having given her previous castle to “the people.” We stan an egalitarian monarch.

Of course, this will come as no surprise to those who saw the first film, a decidedly feminist reboot of Sleeping Beauty. But Linda Woolverton—the screenwriter behind both Maleficent films and basically your entire childhood (Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King, hello!)—tells me that turning a tale of problematic true love on its head was a challenge at first. While writing the first film, she struggled with making the Disney villain sympathetic. “What on Earth happened to this woman that she was that pissed off?” she asked herself. And so, “I had to give her a real reason.”

The answer: She wrote a scene in which Maleficent is drugged by a paramour and wakes to find he’s cut off her wings. “It was…nothing we ever said out loud, but it feels like a date rape,” she tells me. “It’s funny, I worked really closely with Angelina Jolie on the whole script—she was fantastic—and we never actually said date rape. It wasn’t until after that it was like, ‘Oh, huh, that’s what that is.'”

That powerful metaphor in Maleficent’s backstory wasn’t the only twist in the first film, though. You may recall that it’s actually Maleficent herself who breaks the sleeping curse by kissing Aurora on the forehead. (Turns out the unconditional true love of a mother is greater than that of a random paramour’s.) That moment was yet another instance of Woolverton realizing, after the fact, what she had written. “For the first Maleficent, I was talking [in an interview] about the moment when Maleficent wakes Aurora up and gives this speech, and I broke down,” she says. “It was so terrible. I realized that the whole movie was an apology to my daughter for getting a divorce.” She adds, “I didn’t even realize it until that moment that the whole movie was about that.”

Prince William and Kate Middleton Took Prince George and Princess Charlotte to a Soccer Match

On Saturday, the royal family partook in a tried-and-true fall Saturday outing: watching a soccer match. But all eyes were squarely on Prince George who unequivocally won the sporting event thanks to his, shall we say, more than enthusiastic celebrations.

The 6-year-old was spotted in the stands clapping, waving and cheering on Aston Villa (who also happens to be his dad’s favorite team) as they took on Norwich City. While Princess Charlotte watched quietly while seated next to Kate Middleton (Prince Louis did not seem to be in attendance) George was enthralled with every moment, turning to Prince William to share in his excitement.

The future king of England quickly began trending on Twitter for his over-the-top expressions — it’s what the rest of us look like watching Bachelor in Paradise.

Here’s George strategizing the team’s next moves with his dad:

Princess Charlotte Reportedly Goes By This Adorable Nickname

Princess Charlotte may be fourth in line to the British throne, but most days she’s just a (mostly) regular kid back at school. As if I didn’t already love this little royal, hearing her reported nickname just took my affection to the next level. Royal reporter Katie Nicholl writes in Vanity Fair that Charlotte was called “warrior princess” at her preschool thanks to her “love of the outdoors and her feisty and outgoing character.” We already know that her parents call her “Lottie,” but this seems even more fitting for the little girl who told photographers outside Prince Louis’s christening, “You’re not coming.”

Sounds like Charlotte is very much her mother’s daughter. One of Kate Middleton‘s main focuses in her royal work is showing young children the benefits of playing and learning outdoors. Earlier this year, the Duchess of Cambridge unveiled her “Back to Nature” garden at the Chelsea Flower Show and brought a barefoot Charlotte, along with her brothers, Prince George and Prince Louis, to play in the space.

The little princess also showed off her stylish side recently on her first day of school at Thomas’s Battersea with Prince George. Eagle-eyed fans spotted a unicorn keychain hanging off her school bag; it turns out she’s a huge fan of the magical creature. At a royal engagement yesterday, Prince William spotted a child playing with a unicorn toy. “My daughter loves unicorns. Loves them,” he said, per People. “Very cool.”

Princess Charlotte was also spotted with a unicorn earlier this summer while watching her dad and uncle, Prince Harry, play polo. Basically, she is to unicorns as her mother is to her beloved wedges and Aunt Meghan is to delicate rings. Even a “warrior princess” needs a go-to accessory. And what better one than a unicorn, am I right?

Hailey Bieber Princess Diana Sweater: How To Get The Look

Of all of Princess Diana’s most iconic looks, her off-duty oversized sweatshirts, bike shorts, and sneakers were a fan favorite—long before the combination was majorly on-trend. And sure, no one can do it like Princess Di, but Hailey Bieber came really, really close in her most recent editorial for Vogue Paris.

In the spread shot by Gregory Harris and styled by Virginie Benarroch, Mrs. Bieber did her best Princess Diana impression. If you came across one of the photos on your Instagram feed (chances are you did—they basically broke the internet this week) you probably had to do a double take.

The model looked nearly identical to the Princess in recreations of some of Diana’s most famous paparazzi photos, down to the messy updos.

But the obsession with Princess Diana’s off-duty looks, Bieber’s off-duty looks, Bieber-imitating-Diana’s-off-duty-looks looks probably has to do with the fact that they’re so accessible. Unlike Hailey’s exposed Alexander Wang thong at the 2019 Met Gala, this just-got-back-from-the-gym look is a little more realistic for everyday. It’s so attainable, one of the sweatshirts Bieber wore in the Vogue Paris photoshoot is actually just $60.

That’s right, Bieber’s Princess Di-inspired sweatshirt can be bought at Mango right now.

Considering some of Princess Diana’s actual sweatshirts have gone on to be auctioned off for as much as $10,000, this is a steal. All you need to recreate the rest of the look is a simple pair of white dad sneakers and bike shorts. Princess Diana and Hailey Bieber would be proud.

Of Course Prince George and Princess Charlotte Were Adorable at Kate Middleton and Prince William's Sailing Race

The Cambridge family has officially returned from vacation (reportedly in Mustique) and is back to royal duties across the pond.

Kate Middleton and Prince William brought along their two oldest children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte, for their engagement today—and it looks like the whole family was having lots of fun. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are competing with each other in the inaugural King’s Cup Regatta, a sailing race to benefit some of their patronages, including Child Bereavement UK and the Early Years program from the couple’s Royal Foundation.

“Their Royal Highnesses hope that The King’s Cup will become an annual event, bringing greater awareness to the wider benefits of sport, whilst also raising support and funds for the causes that The Duke and Duchess support,” a caption on their official Instagram explains.

Bonus: We get to see their royal highnesses looking casual in shorts—and another magnificent ponytail on Middleton.

But it’s the little royals who really stole the show. George and Charlotte were spotted on another boat with their grandparents, Carole and Michael Middleton, cheering on their mom and dad. George was especially nautical in a captain’s hat. And it looks like he’s lost another front tooth since the birthday photos his parents released when he turned six.

Prince George and Princess Charlotte Are Reportedly as Obsessed With Baby Archie as We Are

Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor may be one of the most famous babies in the world—his parents are out here sharing his milestones with the likes of Beyoncé and Jay-Z—but to Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, he’s simply their adorable little cousin.

Us Weekly reports that George and Charlotte are especially taken with the newest member of the royal family. “They dote on him,” a source told the magazine. “Charlotte treats Meghan and Harry’s son like a little doll and is always asking after him.”

Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle recently took all the kids to watch their fathers, Prince William and Prince Harry, play in a celebrity polo match—and from the photos, it looks like a good time was had by all. Even Prince Louis got in on the action, playing with his mom’s sunglasses and making faces for Aunt Meghan and Archie.

Us Weekly also reports that George, who will turn 6 on July 22, and Charlotte, 4, also include their little brother in playtime. But it sounds like Charlotte may be running the show. “Charlotte’s a bit of a tomboy and loves climbing and sports,” their source said. “Although Charlotte’s much bossier than George, she looks up to him. They squabble over small things like toys, but the majority of the time they get along.”

Recent reports indicate that the splitting of the royal households has eased whatever tension might have been present between the Cambridges and the Sussexes. Middleton and Markle, who have been the subject of many a tabloid headline about a “royal feud” are apparently getting closer, too. “They’re each a little more relaxed,” a source says. “They have more in common now.”

It’s not surprising, then, that the royal cousins are also bonding. Harry and William are famously tight with their own cousins—Zara Tindall, Peter Phillips, Princess Beatrice, and Princess Eugenie. After all, who else could truly understand what growing up in the royal spotlight is actually like?
