Julia Roberts Was Reportedly Suggested at One Point to Play Harriet Tubman

The story of Harriet Tubman is currently playing in theaters nationwide with Cynthia Erivo in the titular role. (The movie is simply called Harriet.) But according to the screenwriter, one exec had a very different idea about who should star as the black abolitionist and activist who freed numerous slaves via the Underground Railroad in the 1800s.

That suggestion? Julia Roberts. “I wanted to turn Harriet Tubman’s life, which I’d studied in college, into an action-adventure movie. The climate in Hollywood, however, was very different back then,” writer Gregory Allen Howard said during a Q&A with Focus Features, via People. “I was told how one studio head said in a meeting, ‘This script is fantastic. Let’s get Julia Roberts to play Harriet Tubman.'” Allen said the idea was met with some rather obvious questions, to which the unnamed executive allegedly said, “It was so long ago. No one is going to know the difference.“

People on social media were as confused and outraged as you might be reading about this story. “They want Julia Roberts A WHITE WOMAN to play Harriet Tubman A BLACK ABOLITIONIST who was a SLAVE. Make it make sense,” one Twitter user wrote. “Full offense: if your instinct, when telling a former-slave abolitionist story, is to turn the SLAVE into a WHITE SAVIOR…Just…Even if you ignore the ‘political correctness’ aspect, the blatant disrespect for HISTORY, shows you have no business making this movie, PERIOD,” another tweeted.

Of course, the internet also had some fun—and a side of social commentary—with the rather absurd suggestion.

Of course, no one is implying that Roberts herself had anything to do with the story or the executive’s remarks. She has yet to say anything publicly or via a statement. “Julia Roberts is somewhere minding her damn business….” one Twitter user surmised.

Harriet, not starring Julia Roberts, is playing in theaters nationwide.

Belt Bag: Celebrities Are Basically Forcing You to Buy a Belt Bag at This Point

Of all the ’80s trends that have come back to haunt us, the fanny pack seemed like the least likely to catch on. But this decade’s take—rebranded as the “belt bag”—is sleek and streamlined. The only thing it has in common with the neon, nylon fanny pack I you wore to a New Kids on the Block concert is the undeniable convenience. You can’t properly bop to “The Right Stuff” or take a decent selfie if you’re also juggling a cute-but-cumbersome clutch.

And celebrities get that. Here’s proof:

Hailey Bieber

Mrs. Bieber modeled a convertible belt bag from Alexander Wang x Bulgari in two colors.

Kylie Jenner

Stormi’s mom slung a plaid belt bag across a white sports bra.

Kaia Gerber

Kourtney Kardashian Heavily Photoshopped a Pic of Her and Kim Kardashian to Make a Point

Kourtney Kardashian is the latest Kardashian-Jenner sibling to be accused of altering a picture of herself on Instagram.

Here’s what happened: Kourtney and her sister Kim attended the 2018 LACMA Art + Film Gala last week in Los Angeles and shared a photo of their lewks on Insta. They seemingly coordinated with matching black dresses—both of which were very chic. No one’s contesting that. What commenters did notice, however, is that Kourtney’s left hand looks a little off in the shot. It wasn’t long before the photoshopping and FaceTuning accusations rolled in.

“What happened to Kourtneys left hand??” one person commented on Instagram, according to People. “Those body’s [sic] are are all fake,” another critic wrote.

Check out the photo in question for yourself, below:

Instead of replying to the accusations, Kourtney seemingly clapped back by posting the same photo of herself and Kim on Twitter—except this time she actually did heavily Photoshop it. She gave herself an exaggerated back arch and shrunk Kim’s waist to a very small size. Of course, it’s possible Kourtney posted this for other reasons—but it appears to be a response of some sort.

See the altered image, below:

In September Khloé had to shut down similar accusations of Photoshop after people suspected the trees in the background of her bikini pic were “wavy.”

“People find anything to comment on, especially just negative people,” Khloé said on Instagram Stories. “And a few people said I did horrible Photoshop because the palm trees are slanted. Well, honey, I don’t Photoshop palm trees. A negative mind will never give you a positive life. Change that mentality and you will change your life.”

This Fashion Show Sent Models Down the Runway Makeup-Free to Make a Point

As the name implies, New York Fashion Week is usually about the fashion, plus the beauty looks that complete the scene. But Thursday evening saw a new frontier: Models of diverse skin tones, shapes, and abilities walked in “skinvisibility cloaks” without any makeup, in a very interesting first for the runway. The show was held by Olay for the brand’s new “Face Anything” campaign, and where it’s usually easy to spot a brand stunt from a mile away, the individual triumphs of the models who walked actually made it feel groundbreaking.

The show’s roster included two-time Olympic gymnast Aly Raisman, beauty influencer Jackie Aina, comedian Lilly Singh, curve model Denise Bidot, and fashion blogger and cancer survivor Mama Cax, among others. It’s impossible to look at those names and the rest of the cast, and not see the ties. All raised their voices, largely through self-made social media platforms, to take on restrictive, harmful norms and double-standards. The show paid those facts attention: before each woman walked, a clip played of her addressing the thing that she’s always been told she’s “too much” of.

Too strong, too defiant, too emotional, too ambitious—the collection sounds like the press before the last election. As Cax points out, none of the traits are a negative when a man is associated with them. In her words, the campaign sees women refusing to dim their lights, instead striking out the “too” and owning what they are.

While 2018 has brought a flood of campaigns dedicated to empowering women, there’s a fine line between those that ring true, and those which use the guise for corporate gain. There is a hint of capitalism here, despite the invisibility cloaks (which camouflaged against the runway, as inspired by Harry Potter). Each of the women completed Olay’s 28-day challenge ahead of the show, using Olay Regenerist Whip Face Moisturizer, Olay Eyes Ultimate Eye Cream, Olay Total Effects 7-in-1 Anti-Aging Daily Face Moisturizer, and Olay Eyes Deep Hydrating Eye Gel (and to be fair, their skin did look great).

But Bidot says that in her experience, the brand asked all the right questions. “The first time I met with them, they were asking me about where I feel we’re at as women, what we feel is empowering, and how they can help the community. Those are the dialogues and the narratives that we need to continue to push. Because alone, we can only get so far.”

Bidot, who started modeling 12 years ago, says that she’s walked runway shows since 2014, but it’s taken until now to see an actual shift in terms of inclusivity. “We always said [plus-size women] we could do beauty campaigns and skin care campaigns, but no one was willing to give us a shot,” she tells Glamour. “Now here we are, breaking the norms.”

Growing up, Bidot, 32, says she “didn’t really see girls that looked like me, not just ethnically, but also physically. And I always wondered why that was. I couldn’t imagine why we couldn’t be the leading ladies—why we couldn’t have all the same careers that everyone was allowed.” The work’s not over yet, she says, both in models and who’s invited to shows. While size-inclusion surged this time last year, the last two seasons left her wondering whether designers saw it as a fad rather than a movement.

“We need to make sure we support the brands that support us, and keep pushing the brands that aren’t quite there yet,” she says. “We’ll wait. You can’t make people move faster than they want to, and we’re not going anywhere. I think that’s what this solidifies.”

Chrissy Teigen Just Posted a Video of Her Stretch Marks to Make an Important Point

Chrissy Teigen‘s been quite open about her body insecurities in the past, revealing just last August that she’s cried over the pressures of Instagram. Her confession made so many people battling body image issues feel less alone, and she continued this transparency last night (July 30) on social media. While hanging out at the pool with husband John Legend and her two children, Teigen shared a video of her stretch marks and simply remarked, “I guess these just aren’t ‘gonna go away. This is my body.”

To make sure her followers knew she wasn’t shaming herself, Teigen followed up her video with a few tweets. “Mom bod alert,” she wrote before continuing, “Instagram is crazy. I think it’s awesome people have killer bodies and are proud to show them off (I really do!!) but I know how hard it can be to forget what (for lack of a better word) regular ol’ bodies look like when everyone looks bonkers amazing.”

The Cravings author admits, however, she isn’t fully there when it comes to body confidence. “I’m still super insecure,” she wrote. “I’m just happy that I can make anyone else out there feel better about themselves!”

Check out Teigen’s video and tweets for yourself, below:

Of course, to make this stream of confessions on brand, Teigen peppered in a few jokes. “Mosquito bites are a nice touch,” she also captioned the video. Then, at the end, she tweeted, “OK back to being stupid!”

But fans aren’t ready to move on from Teigen’s video. Hundreds of people flocked to both Twitter and Instagram and thanked her for helping them feel more at peace with their bodies. “You have no idea how much better you just made me feel. I even showed my husband: look Chrissy has stretch marks where I do,” one woman wrote. “Thank you for assuring women everywhere that this is normal, OK and expected,” another one wrote.

Check out a few more reactions for yourself, below:

Thanks, CT, for reminding us of such an important point: that our bodies are forever changing, and that’s 100 percent OK.

This Valedictorian's Mic Got Cut Off When She Brought Up Sexual Assault—but She Still Got Her Point Across

Last week, 17-year-old Lulabel Seitz made a speech to graduates at Petaluma High School in Petaluma, California, where she was the class valedictorian. She told them how proud they should be of their achievements and ability to get through tough times on campus, but when she broached the subject of sexual assault, her mic was cut off.

“We are not too young to speak up, to dream and to create change, which is why even when some people on this campus, those some people — “ Seitz said just as the mic went silent. Seitz looked around, perplexed, as her classmates quickly began to shout, “Let her speak!” But the mic didn’t come back on. Although Seitz eventually took her seat and didn’t finish, she went on YouTube later and posted what she would have said if she’d been allowed to continue: “And even learning on a campus in which some people defend perpetrators of sexual assault, and silence their victims, we didn’t let that drag us down,” she says in the video.

“The Petaluma High School administration infringed on my freedom of speech, and prevented a whole graduating class from having their message delivered,” Seitz writes in the caption of her YouTube video. “For weeks, they have threatened me against ‘speaking against them’ in my speech. Sometimes we know what’s right and have to do it despite the threats.”

Seitz told ABC News that administrators had specifically told to her to steer clear of the topic during her speech. However, she felt compelled to speak up, particularly because sexual assault is something personal to her. She said one of the incidents she was referencing in her speech was her own, after a student allegedly assaulted her on school grounds, reported ABC News. She claims that administrators didn’t suspend or expel the student, but she later reported the incident to police and the student was arrested.

“They made all these rules to prevent me from speaking,” Seitz said. “So I decided to use the opportunity to bring it up.”

Seitz added that she was even pulled out of her last class in high school to “make sure she got the message.”

“They told me to be quiet, told me I can’t talk about it,” she told ABC. “I realized that this is a big injustice and needs to be spoken about.”

In an initial statement to the San Francisco Chronicle, school officials said they could not comment due to student privacy issues. However, the high school’s principal David Stirrat told the Washington Post by email that students had to have their speeches approved ahead of time, and they had been told the microphone would be cut off if they went off script.

“In Lulabel’s case, her approved speech didn’t include any reference to an assault,” he said. “We certainly would have considered such an addition, provided no individuals were named or defamed.”

Still, many people felt Seitz had been unfairly censored and that she should have been allowed to make her point about sexual assault. Her video has now been viewed more than 300,000 times and there has been an outpouring of support for her on social media. Former Texas state senator Wendy Davis tweeted, “‘Let her speak …’ – often a necessary refrain when women speak truth to power. I have a feeling we’ll be hearing a good deal more from Lulabel Seitz as the future unfolds for this extraordinary young woman. #letherspeak.”

Actress Mia Sorvino, who has been a vocal force in the #MeToo movement, also took to Twitter to say, “Lulabel Seitz is a fierce truth teller and they tried to silence her- don’t you understand sexual assault victims will be silenced no more???? High school valedictorian says speech was cut off when she began to talk about sexual assault.”
