Kathie Lee Gifford Says 'No Person Is Perfect' and Calls for Forgiveness for Matt Lauer

Yesterday, Savannah Guthrie and Hoda Kotb opened the Today show on a somber (and shocked) note as they announced the firing of their co-host Matt Lauer over sexual misconduct accusations. Guthrie was obviously distressed by the news but also expressed her heartbreak for the woman who had come forward. “This is a sad morning at Today and NBC News,” Guthrie said. “As I’m sure you can understand, we are devastated. I’m heartbroken for Matt. He is my dear, dear colleague. And I’m heartbroken for the brave colleague who came forward to tell her story and any other women who have their own stories to tell.”

She added: “This reckoning that so many organizations have been going through is important, it’s long overdue, and it must result in workplaces where all women—all people—feel safe and respected.” Hotb concurred.

As the day, and the show, went on, her other co-hosts weighed in with Al Roker saying he was “still processing” while the newest addition to Today, Megyn Kelly, said that this one hit close to home but, “”But when this happens what we don’t see is the pain on the faces of those who found the courage to come forward, and it’s a terrifying thing to do. We are in the middle of a sea change in this country. An empowerment revolution,” Kelly added. “As painful as this moment is for so many here at NBC today, at CBS earlier this month, at Fox News over the last year, in Hollywood this fall, it is a sign of progress. Of women finding their voices, their courage and of the erosion of a shameful power imbalance that has been in place for far too long.”

But it’s Kathie Lee Gifford’s comments that are drawing fire from both men and women on Twitter. Gifford, who is always quite open about her Christian faith, commented that she had been praying for Lauer. But it was what came next that has everyone in an uproar:

“I’m grappling with, should I even share something? But I guess I
really should. I don’t feel that Matt has betrayed us in any way at
all but when I found out that my husband had betrayed me, you question
your own judgment. You say, ‘Was everything a lie?’ And I think we
have to very much fight against that, that the man we know and adored
was the man we loved and adored and continue to. I texted him this
morning and said ‘I adore you and no person is perfect in this world.’
Nobody is. We’ve all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God, is
what scripture says. And what we need now is forgiveness and mercy for
one another. And We don’t need taunts and we don’t need ugliness. We
have enough of that in the world.” She continued by sending her love
and God’s blessing to the person who came forward, to Matt, his
children, his wife saying the one thing she’s sure of in her life is
the only God can heal it.”

The betrayal she’s referring to is the infidelity of her late husband, Frank Gifford. And while it’s all well and good that she chose to forgive him, the situation between Lauer and his accusers is not the same thing. Not to mention that sweeping the multiple accusations quickly aside with a nobody’s perfect, let’s all just get along mentality is a disservice to the women who suffered at his hand.

Twitter, as you might imagine, was not having it.

Here’s hoping Gifford can read the room a little better when she hits the air at 10 a.m. Thursday.

President Trump Tweets He Turned Down Time Magazine's 2017 Person of the Year Award

In just a couple of weeks, we’ll find out who has the distinction of being Time’s 2017 Person of the Year—typically, yes, a person (though it can also be a group, object, or idea) who has most influenced the year’s events, whether that’s in a good way or not so much. Last year, the nomination went to just-elected, not-yet-inaugurated Donald Trump. But the now-President is apparently contemplating his place in the canon once again: On Friday, Trump tweeted that he was “PROBABLY going to be named” (emphasis his) Person of the Year once again; however, he wrote, he turned the magazine’s offer down because “probably” just wasn’t good enough. And it wasn’t long before Time issued a correction to Trump’s story.

Trump tweeted, “Time Magazine called to say that I was PROBABLY going to be named ‘Man (Person) of the Year,’ like last year, but I would have to agree to an interview and a major photo shoot. I said probably is no good and took a pass. Thanks anyway!”

A few hours later, the magazine tweeted its response, stating, “The President is incorrect about how we choose Person of the Year. TIME does not comment on our choice until publication, which is December 6.”

Even the chief content officer of Time Inc. tweeted to clarify Trump’s claim: “Amazing. Not a speck of truth here—Trump tweets he ‘took a pass’ at being named TIME’s person of the year.”

Of course, Twitter users threw their two cents into the ring about Trump’s tweet—and the results were incredible.

(Speaking of, it’s worth noting that #MeToo is currently beating Trump in Time‘s reader poll for Person of the Year nominations.)

When Trump was named 2016’s Person of the Year, he told Matt Lauer that he considered it “a very, very great honor.” Meanwhile, the magazine’s then-editor-in-chief, Nancy Gibbs, wrote about Trump’s nomination following the announcement: “So which is it this year: Better or worse? The challenge for Donald Trump is how profoundly the country disagrees about the answer.”

It’s not the first time Trump’s had a thing about Time: He often brags about the number of times he’s appeared on the publication’s cover. He’s even claimed to hold the record for number of cover appearances, at 14—however, former President Nixon has had more than three times as many. Earlier this year, it came out that Trump displayed fake issues of Time with his face on the cover in five of his golf clubs.

In the meantime, we’ll be waiting to find out who the person of the year actually will be—but for now, it seems we can chalk Trump’s tweet up to fake news.

Ivana Trump Is the One Person Encouraging Donald Trump to Tweet

PHOTO: CBS Sunday Morning

Once upon a time, namely from 2008-2016, there was a president who tweeted presidentially. His name was Barack Obama, and while we will not get swept into any sort of comparative nostalgia here, his sanity (or that of his aides) using the social media platform kind of formed a baseline for Presidential Tweeting 101. Until January 20, 2017, when Donald Trump took office and threw the textbook out the window. The stories of his tweet debacles are honestly too numerous to go into here, though recent egregious sh-tstorms of late have involved terrifying provocations aimed at North Korea and hurricane-ravaged Puerto Rico. There’s been repeated attempts by his team to stage Twitter interventions.

So why does he tweet the way he does? We might never know exactly why, but an enabler has revealed herself, and it’s none other than Ivana Trump, his ex-wife and mother to Donald Jr., Eric, and Ivanka Trump. In an interview with CBS on Sunday morning, she said that she still speaks regularly with Donald—about once a week, in fact. According to the transcript CBS Sunday Morning provided, he also asks her for advice, particularly when it comes to tweeting.

Ivana says Donald repeatedly asks her, “Should I tweet? Should I not tweet?”

She continues: “I said, ‘I think you should tweet. It’s a new way, a new technology. And if you want to get your words across rightly, without telling the New York Times, which is going to twist every single word of yours, this is how you get your message out.”

The interviewer, Jim Axelrod, gently chimes in to mention that “so many people…have said, ‘Mr. President, stop tweeting.'”

“Well, it’s a tweeting president,” Ivana responded. “This is his new way, how to put the message across. And he’s right.”

“And you love it,” said Axelrod.

“Yeah,” responded Ivana.

And there you have it, folks. Watch the interview below:

Kendall Jenner Is Literally the Only Person in Fergie's New Music Video

Kendall Jenner isn’t just a star of Fergie’s new music video “Enchanté (Carine).” She’s the star, co-stars, and every and all supporting players.

The model appears in every scene, wearing in an impressive collection of outfits to make dinner party, walk the dog, and lip sync to Fergie’s new track. Just saying: It’s hard not to see parallels between the many Kendalls on-screen and the mountain of Taylors from Swift’s mega-hit video for “Look What You Made Me Do.” Maybe 2017 will be the year of the mimeograph music video?

Jenner isn’t the only young star to leave a mark on the video. Fergie’s son, Axl Jack Duhamel, has a credit on the song for adding his adorable 4-year-old vocals to the track. Though this music video marks a notable release from Fergie’s new visual album, “Double Dutchess,” this month’s headlines have focused on the musician’s personal life rather than her music. After an eight-year marriage, the singer recently announced she and Josh Duhamel are divorcing. The two released a joint statement explaining, “We are and will always be united in our support of each other and our family.”

This isn’t the first time Jenner and Fergie have collaborated on a music video. The model appeared in the 2016 video for The Black Eyed Peas’ “#WHERESTHELOVE ft. The World,” which focused on raising awareness of recent international and domestic acts of violence and featured celebrities, including Justin Timberlake, Usher, and DJ Khaled. Though Jenner’s cameo in the video is brief, it was likely great lip-synching practice for her latest Fergie collab.
