The Game of Thrones Finale Got Some Major Mixed Reactions From Fans

HBO premiered the highly-anticipated series finale of Game of Thrones tonight, and let’s just say some fans were not feeling it. (You can read more about how it went down, here.) Contempt for how showrunners took the direction of the narratives and the characters was palpable on Twitter. However, plenty of other fans chimed in that they dug the series finale.

Check out just a few of the reactions, below. Both the positive and negative tweets keep rolling in.

These reactions, though, only hit the tip of the iceberg. All season fans have been pointing out areas where showrunners could’ve done better. People felt like Arya didn’t get enough credit when she killed the Night King. Jon Snow kept making questionable choices left and right. At one point, Sansa basically said that experiencing rape made her grow as a person. That last one really didn’t sit well with viewers, including Jessica Chastain, who tweeted, “Rape is not a tool to make a character stronger.”

Another fan noted, “Sansa thrived DESPITE her trauma, not BECAUSE of it. That’s what is frustrating about the scene and what so many people are missing here.” A third one wrote, “I would have rather Sansa been like ‘it is what it is’ to the events that lead her to this season versus basically implying getting assaulted and shit made her ‘stronger’ Just….pitiful. And def written by a cishet man.”

But there were some moments of success. The fact that Arya did kill the Night King was badass, regardless of the aftermath. “It was so unbelievably exciting,”Maisie Williams told Entertainment Weekly about the scene. “But I immediately thought that everybody would hate it, that Arya doesn’t deserve it. The hardest thing in any series is when you build up a villain that’s so impossible to defeat and then you defeat them. It has to be intelligently done because otherwise people are like, ‘Well, [the villain] couldn’t have been that bad when some 100-pound girl comes in and stabs him.’ You gotta make it cool. And then I told my boyfriend and he was like, ‘Mmm, should be Jon though, really, shouldn’t it?’” For the record: No, it shouldn’t have been Jon Snow. That was Arya’s win, and no one can take that from her.

It’s difficult to say how the reception of this finale will inform the Game of Thrones fandom. A prequel is on the horizon, but will fans tune in? I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

Beto O'Rourke Is Running for President, and Progressive Women Have Mixed Feelings

When I first heard two years ago that Beto O’Rourke, a relatively unknown Texas congressman from El Paso without any flashy national legislative wins, was running against swamp monster Ted Cruz for the latter’s Texas Senate seat, I had a similar reaction to a lot of people: Go for it, dude. Why not?

And like a lot of people, when I saw the lavish magazine profiles and never-ending Facebook Live videos and sweat-soaked blue button-downs, I got excited. Texas needed this win. Democratic organizers in states put for decades in the “Lean Red” and “Solid Red” columns needed this win. And with so much on the line in the 2018 midterms, progressives nationwide needed this win. I believed Beto O’Rourke’s message could inspire action from generation of activists and voters for years to come. And even after he lost, I hoped we’d see him again in the future.

So when news broke that O’Rourke was gearing up for a presidential run, you’d think I’d jump for joy. But I didn’t.

As a candidate in the Texas Senate race, O’Rourke radiated promise and optimism, an avatar for Democrats who’d had little to cheer for in such a historically conservative state. As a candidate on the national stage, however, he looks a lot less like the future we’d hope for. Even against just the other white men in this race (or about to get in it) like former Vice President Joe Biden, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, and Mayor Pete Buttigieg, it’s hard to say what Beto O’Rourke brings to the table other than potentially a Best Personality™ superlative.

It’s hard not to be skeptical, too, about O’Rourke’s personality-driven bid when former Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams and former Florida gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum are putting their post-election efforts towards initiatives like rebuilding Georgia’s entire election system and creating a voter registration group in Florida, respectively. (Abrams may yet announce a run for higher office, but if and when she does, it’ll be backed up with clear policy objectives that she’s detailing now.) If O’Rourke truly wants to do the “greatest good” for America as he claims, why not focus on uprooting structural inequality on the ground and making it easier for the most vulnerable Americans to have their voices heard and their needs met? What does running an ambiguous presidential campaign achieve?

There’s a big difference between O’Rourke running unopposed against Ted Cruz, one of the more unpopular members of Congress, and O’Rourke running against a slate of candidates in one of the most diverse primary fields—both in terms of identities and ideology—in presidential campaign history. Against Cruz, the common criticism that O’Rourke was low in ideological direction, policy proposals, and legislative accomplishments faded into the background. Now it’s unmissable. To his credit, O’Rourke has tried to better define where he stands—but his platform seems mostly to draw on the ideas that more liberal-leaning peers have put forward, with few signature ideas of his own. He’s supported a few more progressive efforts like the Green New Deal and ending narcotics prohibition and legalizing marijuana, though he’s also rescinded his support of single-payer healthcare for a more moderate option called Medicare for America.

Some see this mix-and-match politics as a positive. “Him being so focused on talking to people, listening to people, and inspiring people at the start of this campaign in combination with sharing those policies is an important balance for me,” says New York-based editor Olivia, who asked not to use her last name. “I can see how it is energizing young people in the party and even people beyond the party and that excites me—I feel like that should be something we’re all cheering on, whether he’s our number-one choice or not.”

Ariana Grande Has Mixed Feelings About Going Back on Tour

It’s been a tough month for Ariana Grande: The singer is coping with the sudden death of her ex-boyfriend, Mac Miller, who passed away from an apparent overdose on September 7. Several days after the news broke, Grande’s reps released a statement saying she was taking time to “heal and mend” and “staying close to home.” Since then, she’s kept her fans updated on Twitter, recently admitting to them that she’s trying to get “back to normal” after everything that’s happened. “It’s hard and I’m human and tired,” she tweeted.

One thing Ariantors are curious about is whether or not she plans to go on tour for her Sweetener album. Her aforementioned statement suggests that probably won’t be happening for a while, but on Friday Grande admitted via Twitter that she has mixed emotions about hitting the road again.

“I’m antsy. can’t sit still,” she wrote. “I wanna tour now. Yesterday I [just] wanted to sit home forever but today I wanna do shows and see [you].”

A fan replied to Grande’s tweet urging her to just do what will make her the happiest. “We don’t want you to go on tour and then regret it,” they said, to which Grande replied, “I’d never regret it. My happiest moments are with y’all and on stage and stuff. I think it’s just the [long] chunks of time away from home that are scary to me.”

The singer continued, “Maybe I’ll do a mini [tour]. I can’t do what I did last time right now. That I do know. Whatever it is, I hope it’s okay with you. I just love and miss you. Everybody telling me I need to take time but I’m so antsy.” (Grande’s referring to her Dangerous Woman Tour from 2017, which included the stop in Manchester.)

On Thursday (September 27), Grande worried fans when she tweeted how she just wants one “okay day.” “I’m so tired,” she added.

The next day, she sent out a message apologizing to anyone who felt concern—not that she needed to do that.

“[Just] had a human moment and wanted to confide. [You] know how much I love you,” she wrote. “On some real life shit.”

Balenciaga Sent Platform Crocs Down the Runway, and People Have Mixed Feelings

If there’s one thing about fashion week you can count on, it’s that a handful of designers will debut something so radical, jaw-dropping, or amazing that it’ll get people outside the industry talking—and tweeting. And this season, Balenciaga takes the cake, as it sent models down the runway in platform Crocs for its Spring 2018 show in Paris. Yep, those are Crocs. Except these came with a nearly four-inch platform and patch-like “charms” plugged into the shoe’s signature pinholes. Take a look.

Can’t decide how you feel about them? Neither can the Internet. As soon as yellow, pink, and grey versions of the platform clogs were seen in Paris on Sunday, people immediately went to Twitter to voice their reactions.

The fashion house actually teamed up with Crocs to create this “very innovative” foam shoe that, according to a press release, the Crocs team was very excited about and that they feel “once once again demonstrates the relevance of our iconic clog in today’s fashion and style world.”

They certainly are iconic. And some people seem to be really into the elevated (literally) version of these very not-fashion shoes.

But not everyone.

It may seem like a crazy concept right now, but then again, white platform Tevas were one of 2016’s hottest shoes among street style stars. And who would have guessed that? These seem a bit less accessible, what with their super-high platform, super-bright color, and—we assume—super-high price tag, but we’ll all just have to wait until spring of next year when these are available for purchase to see if they can make it out in the real world—and not get mocked.
