Mindy Kaling Is Done Feeling Guilty Over New Mom Expectations

When you’re pregnant, it easy to paint a perfect picture of what kind of mom you’re going to be—you’ll buy the best organic baby food, attend Mommy and Me classes religiously, and you’ll definitely be the kind of mom that never misses a milestone. But once your little bundle of joy arrives all those mommy expectations can seem like a distant memory. “I thought I would go into everything with a real source of like, deep Yoda knowledge about being a mom,” says Mindy Kaling, who became a first-time mom when her daughter Katherine was born in 2017. “That has not ended up being the case.”

All the expectations placed on new moms—breastfeed without complaining, look pretty (but don’t wear too much makeup), fill your Instagram feed with cute baby pics—can also be a major source of guilt. Even for Kaling. “I work with another mom on Four Weddings and a Funeral [coming to Hulu later this year] who has a one-year-old, and the thing that we always feel frustrated about is Mommy and Me classes always take place on like a Tuesday at 11 A.M.,” she says. As a working mom (albeit a very famous one), she can’t just ditch the office. “We just are never there. Getting over the guilt that I have to send someone else to take my child to a class that I’d like to go to is on-going,” she says, “but I’m kind of relieving myself of those guilty feelings. That has been my New Year’s resolution—moving forward it’s the kind of change I want to make for myself.”

On Instagram at least, Kaling seems like the type of mom who couldn’t possibly have anything to feel guilty over. The Ocean’s 8 star could give food bloggers a run for their money with her tutorials of homemade baby food (which, TBH, looks practically gourmet for someone who describes herself as “barely a cook”). “Because I work and I don’t get to cook a lot for her…I wanted to have it memorialized on Instagram so that everyone can see the few times I can actually do it,” she says with a laugh. “It’s for me, too! It makes me feel good and it’s really rewarding.”

IRL, she says, things don’t always look so ‘grammable. “I wish I could be one of those Instagram food stylists who spends three hours on Sunday preparing sweet potatoes and sautéing broccoli so they can make healthy bowls and put them in Tupperware,” she says (don’t we all.) “I’m just not that person and I’ll never be that person,” she says. Kaling, who is a Protein One ambassador, loves a good shortcut. “I throw a box of Protein One bars in my car or in my trailer so when it’s 11 P.M. and I’m working, I don’t go off the deep end and want to eat an entire pizza or have my assistant go and buy me a thing of cookie dough,” she says.

For Kaling, and so many other new moms, a parenting strategy that evolves on the fly shouldn’t be a source of guilt. “I read this book—and not to name drop, but it was given to me by Oprah—that talks a lot about how to be a conscious parent. I loved it,” she says. But it’s not always easy to keep up with. “When I go to bed at night, I’m like, ‘Oh, should I not have been having that conversation on the phone in front of her?’” Still, per her New Year’s resolution, Kaling isn’t letting herself lose sleep over it. “I just try to [say to myself], OK, I was sweet and patient with her and we spent a lot of quality time together, and I didn’t do anything that is shameful,” Kaling says. “I think my parenting strategy—and this is not at all what I anticipated—is just getting through each day.”

Mindy Kaling, Hoda Kotb, and Savannah Guthrie's Best Advice

If anyone’s qualified to talk about making your dreams come true, it’s three women who have refused to take no for an answer. Mindy Kaling, Hoda Kotb, and Savannah Guthrie all just happened to do so on TV—Kaling in her revolutionary series The Mindy Project, and Kotb and Guthrie co-hosting Today on NBC. But even as Kaling’s built a reputation for asking “why not me?” and encouraging women to go for everything they want, it’s easier said than done. That’s where determination comes in—something the three can all speak to, especially when it comes to the long hours and hard work involved.

At Glamour‘s 2018 Women of the Year Summit on Sunday, November 11, the three gathered for panel called Closing the Dream Gap: Showing Girls (and Ourselves) What’s Next. Their biggest advice for women looking to build their confidence and make their dreams come true is to put in the hard work. From that, they say, comes the confidence and the courage to think you can achieve anything.

“I always just did the leg work, and it meant I never came to anything unprepared,” Kaling said. “The only reason I was able to be confident was because I literally couldn’t not be confident with the amount of research and preparation I did.”

Guthrie echoed a similar sentiment. “The work is the confidence,” she said. “Confidence isn’t some slogan. Confidence is earned.”

Kaling noted that self-love is also a really big part of success. The actress and comedian says that when she Googles herself, she notices how people say she’s really “into” herself. “It’s not that I’m into myself,” Kaling said. “It’s that I don’t hate myself. In my career, a lot of people have a problem with being around women who don’t hate themselves. Never hate yourself.”

Kotb, Guthrie, and Kaling also discussed a conundrum many women face: the balance between being assertive and coming across as “likable.” Kaling told a self-deprecating anecdote about how never being perceived as conventionally attractive by men actually made asking for things easier. “When you are ignored in that way, things like confidence and asking for things in your professional career become a little easier,” she said.

Guthrie added, “Growing up, I was not an attractive child. Boys didn’t like me. Physical appeal was never what I had, so it helped me to come up with a personality and lean on other things. What gives you success in the longterm comes from the inside.”

Kotb shared a story about how her friend Maria Shriver’s 22-year-old son was the one who complained about the less-than-appetizing food at a luncheon filled with extremely powerful women. She said that many of the women there, despite being so successful, were afraid to voice their dissatisfaction for some reason.

The trio hopes this thinking changes for other women, but on their own terms. “I want [my daughter] to be confident and humble,” Guthrie said. “I want her to be gentle and bold.” Kotb added, “You can change and evolve by watching other women.”

At the end of the day, all three of these women say dreams come true when you figure out how to swallow your fear—even temporarily. Fake it until you make it. “I was fearful and insecure, and I just did it anyway,” Guthrie said. “It took me a long time to feel solid and secure. Maybe just yesterday.”

Kaling spent years being frustrated with the lack of diversity in Hollywood. That’s what motivated her to go after her acting and writing dreams. “I’ve always just had a chip on my shoulder,” Kaling said. “When you’re raised without seeing representation and you’re forced to relate to Jennifer Aniston on Friends, you’re just starved for it for so long.”

Representation is what helped Guthrie realize she could be lead anchor of a news show. “I felt like I connected with [Katie Couric], ” she said. “She made sense to me. And I was like, ‘Maybe I could do that.'”

Overcoming adversity and fear—specifically breast cancer and a divorce—is what helped Kotb see things more clearly. “You start to think to yourself, ‘Well, now what am I afraid of? What am I afraid of?” she said. “I remember I woke up one morning and I got four words: You can’t scare me. All of a sudden I became empowered.”

A similar phenomenon happened to Kaling, too. After she broke a gender and race boundary in Hollywood and found herself working on The Office, she asked herself what else was possible. That’s what she, Guthrie, and Kotb want to happen for all women.

“Why not you?” Guthrie said. “Whatever your dream is, you don’t have to shout it to the world—but in your own mind think big.”

Mindy Kaling Has Reportedly Given Birth To a Baby Girl

Congratulations are in order for Mindy Kaling—well, maybe. She reportedly gave birth to her first child, a baby girl, on December 15. And according to E! News, the actress named her daughter Katherine.

News first broke of Kaling’s pregnancy back in July. Since then, she’s kept details of her pregnancy as low-key as possible. Though she told Willie Geist during an appearance on Sunday Today, “I’d like to be the fun mom. I know I’m gonna be the dorky mom. So it could be kind of fun, too. I think that would be nice.”

She also noted that she felt some trepidation about becoming a first-time parent, simply because she didn’t know what to expect. “It’s so unknown to me,” Kaling said. “I have a lot of control over a lot of aspects of my life, and this is one where I’m like, okay, it’s out of my hands, which is kind of a fun feeling.”

Kaling added that she had all the motherly inspiration she needed at home with her own mother, Swati. “My mom was incredibly fierce and so devoted to us, just loved us and really wanted us to be happy no matter what we did,” Kailing told Geist. “My career choice was not something that she was familiar with, and she was just so supportive of that. And if I could give that to my child, just that open-mindedness, I’d be so happy.”

While Kaling will certainly have a fun holiday season with her new daughter, she won’t have the luxury of taking too much time off. Her latest film, A Wrinkle in Time, will be released in theaters in March—meaning Kaling will likely be back on the interview circuit soon. But then again, maybe her little one can just tag along and make each appearance all the more adorable.

'The Mindy Project' Is Auctioning off Some of Mindy's Best Costumes

Alas, The Mindy Project is coming to an end on Tuesday, but there’s one bright spot in the unyielding bleakness brought about by its finale: Mindy Lahiri’s incredible, colorful costumes and accessories are headed to auction. You read that right—and if you’ve spent the past six seasons lusting after Mindy’s wardrobe as much as you’ve followed the plot, you’re going to want in on this. There’s just one catch: You gotta act fact. Really fast.

On Monday, Hulu announced that it partnered with Universal Television and ScreenBid to auction off 45 items from the show, including costumes worn by star and producer Mindy Kaling. (If you’re not obsessing over the clothes, you should also known that they’re also auctioning off a few props.)

The auction includes the Dolce & Gabbana lemon print dress worn by Kaling in the “Princeton Charming” episode from season four, which comes with a matching yellow cardigan and Christian Louboutin white-and-tan pumps.

Or, you could try and bid on the Hervé Léger hot pink bandage dress Kaling wore in the iconic “My Cool Christian Boyfriend” episode, way back in season one. (The show is also auctioning off the very same dress in black for all your holiday LBD needs, real or conveniently invented for this occasion.)

There’s also the double-breasted magenta dress with rhinestone buttons that was made specifically by costume designer Salvador Perez for Mindy to wear when she lunched with Chris’ mom in season three’s “Annette Castellano Is My Nemesis.” Less lunch-with-the-boyfriend’s-mom is a very cozy Wildfox star knit sweater that was worn at the end of the show’s very first episode.

Other insanely wearable Mindy outfits from the show that are up for auction include a Mono B horse print sleeveless blouse, which comes with a black and white plaid Free People skirt and a yellow I Look cardigan; a black Wildfox No. 9 sequin knit sweater with black Plush heart print leggings.

There’s also a great weekend outfit in there: the AG purple scoop neck T-shirt, bebe red leatherette moto jacket, a fringed suede purse, and Ralph Lauren suede brown booties that Mindy wore to a music festival when she was dating DJ Sacrament back in season two. Bidding on that one is currently at $50, so don’t think this incredible sale is going to break the bank.

Bids right now range from $50 to $500, and according to the Los Angeles Times, 10 of the auction’s items will benefit the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network—so we’re pretty sure any potential splurges are justifiable. The auction will kick off on Monday at 9 P.M. PST and close on November 27.

Check out the full list of auction items here—you might as well just grab your credit card while you’re at it, TBH.

We Got Mindy Kaling to Give Us Her Take on the New iPhone X

The lore surrounding the upcoming iPhone X (out Friday, November 3) has officially reached a fever pitch—from mounting anxiety surrounding a demand that may reportedly outnumber supply to a much-debated new facial recognition feature (a James Bond–ian widget that lets your mug do the unlocking). But while most of us will have to wait until Friday (or longer) to get our hands on the tenth-anniversary iPhone, Mindy Kaling got to road-test one all weekend long. So we got her to give us her take on the glass-backed, wireless, face-enhancing, face-reading, face-contouring mega-phone.

“I usually don’t care about getting new versions of anything,” Kaling admitted. “When I get an update for my computer, I always click ‘remind me later’ until months go by and my computer starts smoking.”

Nevertheless, she tells Glamour the new iPhone is “so legit.” Here are five ways The Mindy Project star thinks the new phone will “upgrade you.”

1. Face ID

Of all the new features in the iPhone X, this one has gotten the most buzz. There’s no Touch ID (nor is there a home button, for that matter); instead, your face unlocks the phone. According to an Apple release, the “TrueDepth camera projects and analyzes more than 30,000 invisible dots to create a precise depth map of your face.” So you can use your face to do everything from unlocking your phone to using Apple Pay.

“Like a villain in a thrilling dystopian science fiction movie, my face is now my password,” reports Kaling. “Face ID works indoors, outdoors and in the dark, so when you have a 3:00 A.M. panic attack, you can be on your phone spiraling even sooner.”

The new iPhone X

2. Wireless Charging

Both the new iPhone 8 and iPhone X have glass backs, allowing—at last!—for wireless charging. “I can now charge my iPhone wirelessly by placing it on a little puck by my bed,” says Kaling. “This just looks cool.”

3. Portrait Lighting

Apple has seriously bumped up the camera on the iPhone X (as well as the iPhone 8, for that matter), including redesigned rear lenses with improved image stabilization—meaning crisper photos, even in low lighting. On the X, a new feature called Portrait Lighting builds on the previous “Portrait Mode” by offering the ability to adjust any portrait-style photos you may take with shadows, lighting effects, and more. In a nutshell, you’re going to waste a lot of time on this phone taking and editing selfies.

Kaling was officially impressed. “We all love Portrait mode, but this is insane,” she says. “I literally never have to wear makeup or shower ever again, my photos will always make me look like Priyanka Chopra.”

4. Water- and Dust-Resistant

This might seem like a no-brainer, but haven’t we all experienced some water “incident” that resulted feverish, poor decision making to attempt a rescue, like dropping an iPhone into a bag of rice? “I treat my phone basically like a coaster for diet sodas,” Kaling says, “so this is a must.”

5. Animojis

Aside from the Face ID, Animojis is probably the most-discussed new iPhone X feature. In addition to the TrueDepth camera allowing your face to unlock your phone, it also has the ability to animate your expressions in a series of emoji—from the panda to the unicorn to, yes, the poop emoji—dubbed “Animoji.” You can then send these as iMessages to your friends. If you think sending an Animoji of yourself to someone sounds dorky, Kaling disagrees: “Mark my words: Animojis are the future. Imagine how this could take the edge off of tough conversations! ‘Warren, I no longer love you, I’m leaving you’ sounds so much more palatable coming from an animated panda head!” OK, point made.
