This Powerful Message From the Girl Scouts About Consent Is Incredibly Important

The Girl Scouts have published a powerful message just in time for the holidays that cautions parents about forcing their children to hug adults. Targeted to the time of year when family gatherings are common, the now-viral article, titled “Reminder: She Doesn’t Owe Anyone a Hug. Not Even at the Holidays”, warns parents not to make their kids hug or kiss relatives and other people.

“Think of it this way, telling your child that she owes someone a hug either just because she hasn’t seen this person in a while or because they gave her a gift can set the stage for her questioning whether she ‘owes’ another person any type of physical affection when they’ve bought her dinner or done something else seemingly nice for her later in life,” a developmental psychologist for the Girl Scouts explained in the piece. (The advice in the piece of course applies to children of any gender, not just girls.)

Of course, the message wasn’t without backlash. Some critics of the story accused the group of sexualizing a common way to greet family. Others argued that the Scouts’ message could trigger an emotional conflict in kids.

But it’s not about a child not being allowed to hug or kiss family members—or being made to feel like it’s wrong to do so. As the Girl Scouts’ article stressed, it’s about a child being “reticent” to hug or kiss a family member and being forced to do so, versus doing it of their own free will: “Of course, many children may naturally want to hug and kiss family members, friends, and neighbors, and that’s lovely—but if your daughter is reticent, don’t force her.”

The other point the organization made in the article was that in light of the recent waves of sexual allegations and abuse, practicing consent should be taught early in young children.

“The lessons girls learn when they’re young about setting physical boundaries and expecting them to be respect last a lifetime, and can influence how she feels about herself and her body as she gets older,” Girl Scouts of America psychologist, Dr. Andrea Bastiani Archibald, said in the article. “Plus, sadly, we know that some adults prey on children, and teaching your daughter about consent early on can help her understand her rights, know when lines are being crossed, and when to go to you for help.”

The article also stressed that being polite is still important—but there are alternative ways of being polite and showing affection that don’t necessarily require such close physical contact, like giving high-fives or blowing kisses. In sum? “Give your girl the space to decide when and how she wants to show affection.”

Selena Gomez Wrote Her Little Sister a Sweet Message About Being Fearless

We know Selena Gomez as an amazing actress, singer, style icon, designer, friend, and girlfriend—but it seems we also need to add “incredible big sister” to her list of many talents.

Last night, the singer shared an Instagram video with her 4-year-old sister, Gracie Elliot Teefey. The two are sitting by the ocean deep in conversation when Gracie says, “I’m not scared.” Selena responds by saying, “Because you are fearless, right? You’re not scared of anything, right?” Then the two share a high five.

Selena captioned her video with this sweet message: “I will forever let my sister know she is strong, bold, and beautiful. She will be raised to know her voice matters. She is going to understand the importance behind being a leader and inspire others by her truth.”

Selena certainly knows a thing or two about being fearless and inspiring people with her honesty. The “Bad Liar” singer underwent a recent kidney transplant and chemotherapy a few years ago to aid her ongoing battle with Lupus. She’s also a big mental health advocate, and takes her job as a role model for millions of young girls seriously.

And though Gracie might be the only one lucky enough to get to call Selena Gomez her big sister, we can all take Sel’s advice to heart—especially considering the thousands of women, in Hollywood and beyond, who have been coming forward this week with their stories of sexual harassment and assault.

Barack Obama Surprises Michelle With Anniversary Video Message

PHOTO: Marla Aufmuth/Getty Images

Grab the tissues — Barack Obama is at it again, bringing us, and Michelle Obama, to tears.

While we (and probably Michelle) doubted Barack would be able to outdo his previous sweet social media messages to his wife, it seems he pulled out all the stops for their 25th wedding anniversary. On Tuesday, the former POTUS surprised his wife at the Pennsylvania Conference for Women in Philadelphia — where Michelle was in conversation with Shonda Rhimes — with an incredibly touching and gracious video message.

During the event, Obama appeared on a screen, first apologizing for “crashing” the event, before launching into a two-minute speech that People reports left Michelle teary-eyed and blushing. Obama also shared his message to his Facebook page and, unsurprisingly, his sincere sentiments have racked up 90,000 Likes in just one hour.

“The idea that you would put up with me for a quarter of a century is a remarkable testament to what a saintly, wonderful, patient person you are,” he says in the video. “It was a lot easier for me to do it because the fact of the matter is that not only have you been an extraordinary partner, not only have you been a great friend, somebody who could always make me laugh, somebody who would always make sure that I was following what I thought was right, but you have also been an example to our daughters and to the entire country. Your strength, grace, your determination, your honesty, the fact that you look so good doing all this…is remarkable.”

He continued: “It’s no wonder that as people got to know you the way that I got to know you, they fell in love. And it is truly the best decision that I ever made to be persistent enough in asking you out for a date, that you finally gave in. I hope you feel the same way.”

After Obama’s message, Michelle, per People, turned to Shonda and joked, “I better get home.”

Earlier in the day, Michelle shared her own message—a black-and-white photo from their wedding—on Twitter. “Happy 25th anniversary @barackobama. A quarter of a century later, you’re still my best friend & the most extraordinary man I know. I ? you” she captioned it.

Barack and Michelle’s quarter century of cute moments began in 1989, when they went on a date to see Do the Right Thing. In the years since, the two have shared two kids, a stint in the White House, started a foundation, and, most importantly, shared several goal-worthy moments for the country to swoon over.

Michelle Obama's 25th Anniversary Message to Barack Is Exactly What You Need Today

PHOTO: Ron Sachs-Pool/Getty Images

Leave it to Michelle and Barack Obama to be the glimmer of hope and happiness needed in the world today. On October 3, which marks the former First Couple’s 25th wedding anniversary, Michelle took to Twitter to celebrate her “best friend” and husband with a sweet message.

Sharing a black and white photo from their wedding, Michelle captioned the now-iconic pic, “Happy 25th anniversary @barackobama. A quarter of a century later, you’re still my best friend & the most extraordinary man I know. I ? you.” (Feel free to start a petition to declare the Obama’s wedding anniversary as a national holiday.) Naturally, the Internet began flooding Michelle’s mentions with adorable GIFs of the two hugging, kissing, and fist-bumping alongside messages of how missed they are in the White House. “Happy Anniversary to an exemplary couple. And y’all are adorable, too. ❤️” one Twitter user wrote.

Barack has yet to share his own message on social media for Michelle, but judging from past public displays of affection towards his wife, it’ll be worth the wait.

Barack and Michelle’s love story — which has been immortalized in the movie Southside With You — began when Michelle was assigned to mentor Barack at the law firm Sidley Austin in Chicago. In 1989, the future Obamas went on their first date to see the movie Do the Right Thing. (“He was trying to show me his sophisticated side by selecting an independent filmmaker,” Michelle teased in 2014, according to MTV.) And the rest is presidential history.

It’s far from the first time that the former POTUS and FLOTUS have had the country screaming “relationship goals.” The couple routinely take to social media on their anniversaries and Valentine’s Day to show each other some love. And just a few months ago, Michelle shared a birthday message to Barack that echoed Tuesday’s anniversary well wishes. “Another year older, but still the same phenomenal guy I married nearly 25 years ago,” she wrote at the time.

Since leaving the White House, the Obamas have traveled extensively, dropped their eldest daughter, Malia, [off at college](/story/barack-obama-admits-he-cried-after-dropping-malia-off-at-college, and are also considering a move to New York City.

Happy silver anniversary, Barack and Michelle.

Kim Kardashian's Response to Trump's Puerto Rico Tweets Is the Message He Needs to Hear

You know things are bad when Kim Kardashian tweets at the president with a poignant message we’d all like him to hear. To nobody’s surprise, President Trump took to Twitter this weekend to praise his handling of relief efforts in hurricane-ravaged Puerto Rico after the federal government’s response was severely criticized for essentially being too little, too late.

Amid a stream of tweets bolstering his own image and going after the media, Trump had a message for the people of Puerto Rico: “Do not believe the Fake News!” A rather thoughtless comment to make to 3.4 million people who don’t have electricity or water, not to mention cell service or internet access. As the rest of us face-palmed and shook our heads in frustration, fellow frequent tweeter (and fellow reality star) Kardashian shot off a response that actually has a chance of crossing the president’s radar.

“They don’t have power to watch the news!!! Please stop tweeting & golfing while people are dying! Please step up & help!” she wrote.

Nailed it. While the accuracy of the media coverage of the situation in Puerto Rico is important to those of us feeling helpless watching from afar, it’s likely not on the top of residents’ minds. Basic necessities like running water and electricity are still far from being restored for most of the island’s citizens.

And while it might be easy to turn the tables on Kim and say that her tweets aren’t really helping either, she and the rest of the Kardashians have donated their fair share in response to Hurricane Harvey, the earthquake in Mexico, and Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico.

Plus, Kim has encouraged her nearly 56 million followers to donate—and they have.

Given that Twitter has been Kim’s outlet of choice to comment on rumors surrounding the surge of baby news in her family, we’ve been paying close attention to her feed. And this clapback isn’t all that different from her others—it just happens to be pointed directly at the president of the United States. And when Kim Kardashian is pleading with Trump to quit tweeting about nonsense and do something helpful, you know things are bad. But we hope he listens.

Jennifer Lawrence Has a Simple Message for Mother!'s Critics

PHOTO: Robin Marchant/The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences/Getty Images

Jennifer Lawrence‘s new movie, Mother!, isn’t getting the love she probably thinks it deserves. The film received an F from CinemaScore], and reviews are split — though the negative ones are pretty scathing. But negative buzz won’t stop J.Law from being J.Law, as evidenced by her reaction to the audience at an Academy screening of the movie earlier this week.

So, basically, the actress held up her middle finger while recounting a tale from filming during a Q&A portion of the screening at the Museum of Modern Art on Thursday, according to People, as if to say, “I don’t care what you think,” or “You’re totally missing the point,” or maybe, “It doesn’t matter what you say about the movie, I’m Jennifer Lawrence, I’ve got my Oscar, I’ve got my money, and no amount of green tomato splats can change that.” Meanwhile, Darren Aronofsky, the film’s director and Lawrence’s boyfriend, simply giggled from the seat beside her. That pretty much says it all, if you ask us.

The film features Lawrence’s titular Mother character dealing with unexpected house guests, a husband who seems more than a little creepy, and other truly terrifying surprises that delve into spoiler territory (but are every bit as disturbing as the ones found in Certified Fresh It).

Lawrence has confessed she isn’t totally on board with how reluctant Aronofsky was about revealing any details of the film to prospective audience members before they showed up at the theaters. “He wants people to go in blind,” she said, according to a New York Times profile. “You’re going to miss all of the detail and all of the brilliance behind the whole movie. My advice is to understand the allegory.”

Maybe later audiences, more likely to pick up spoilers as time goes by, will have a more favorable opinion of the film. Or maybe Lawrence will continue to feel the need to flip audiences off.
