Meghan Markle Wears Self-Portrait for the Queen's Christmas Luncheon

The next manifestation of the so-called “Meghan Markle Effect“: fans being able to track down something she wears without even getting a full look at her outfit. Such was the case with the dress she donned to the Queen’s annual Christmas luncheon. Simply with a few blurry images of Markle sitting in the passenger seat as she and Prince Harry drove into Buckingham Palace, royal fashion sleuths identified the maker of her lace-topped dress—as well as the exact style.

Granted, the guipure lace is pretty distinctive, but it’s still no small feat. Here’s the best look we have at Markle’s dress for a holiday meal chez the Queen.

Markle’s lace-top dress is by celebrity-favorite brand Self-Portrait. Called the Nightshade Midi Dress, the style features the brand’s signature lace work (this one has embroidered flowers all over) cut into a short-sleeved top, as well as a black crepe, mid-length A-line skirt.

It originally retailed for £300—so a little over $400—but has since sold out on Self-Portrait’s website. You can still find different styles featuring the same Nightshade lace, though, including a mini dress version (on sale for £75, or around $101) and a long-sleeve ruffle top (also discounted right now, for £98, or around $131).

Markle has worn the London-based brand, which was founded by designer Han Chong in 2013, before. You may remember her light blue teardrop dress from Glamour‘s College Women of the Year event back in 2016.

Her future sister-in-law also appears to be a fan of the brand: Kate Middleton wore Self-Portrait’s Mia lace and pleated gown (low-key twinning with Paris Hilton, NBD) to the U.K. premiere of A Street Cat Named Bob last year. Great minds.

Expect Self-Portrait’s remaining Nightshade stock to sell out in 3, 2…

Twitter Is Not Here for Ivanka Trump's Tweet to Meghan Markle and Prince Harry

We can all agree that one bright spot in an otherwise, um, challenging year was the engagement of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry. When, after many months of speculation, news of their impending wedding broke in late November, a wave of people took to Twitter to send the lovebirds their happiest well-wishes. A second wave came this past week, when they announced their wedding date (May 19, 2018; set an alert now).

First Daughter and “assistant to the President” Ivanka Trump was among those who wanted to tweet their congratulations. In the first part of a two-part tweet, Trump wrote that she was “Wishing Meghan and Prince Harry a lifetime of love, laughter and happiness together.” Then she followed it up with, “I have no doubt that this couple will do extraordinary things, both individually and collectively. Congratulations!”

Love or not-so-much-love Ivanka, her message to Meghan and Harry is pretty innocuous. Thoughtful even. And she’s right: Both Meghan and Harry will likely rack up a few accomplishments as a married couple. They already have, after all, and show no signs of stopping now that they’re getting hitched.

But when Twitter spotted her message, it went off.

It appears that many people read what Trump wrote and inferred that something more was going on. Mostly, they wondered whether her kind words were just a savvy way to angle for an invite to the royal wedding. As you might have guessed, they were not kind with their accusations.

(In case you don’t remember, Trump and her husband Jared Kushner once made a cameo on Gossip Girl back in the day, hence the relevance of the above GIF.)

We don’t know if Ivanka will get an invitation, but it’s kind of hasty of Twitter to jump all over her and surmise some nefarious intent from an otherwise nice message—even if you’re not her biggest fan. What we do know, however is how Price Harry proposed to Markle; that the cake is going to be banana flavored; and that Markle is planning to focus on charity work after the wedding. We’re just counting down the days now until the actual wedding.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Have a 'Profound Sense of Commitment'

As if you needed any more confirmation that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are taking England—and the world—by storm with their upcoming wedding, the couple has literally been blessed by a holy figure.

The Most Revd and Rt Hon Justin Welby—whom you probably know as the Archbishop of Canterbury—recently expressed his delight about Prince Harry and Markle’s engagement, also dropping a few hints at how their May 2018 wedding will be structured. And unlike Prince William and Kate Middleton’s grandiose Westminster Abbey wedding with thousands of guests in attendance, we’ll be expecting something a little more low-key with the duo’s choice in Windsor Castle.

“I am very, very sure after conversations that this is no tick-box exercise of ‘We ought to get married in church,’” he told BBC Radio Four’s Today broadcast, per People. “There is a profound sense of commitment, of seriousness both about faith and about their lives together which is quite inspirational.”

The Archbishop isn’t sure yet if he’ll be marrying the couple in Windsor’s cozy St. George’s Chapel—“I think that’s up to them”—but he’s confident it’ll be an event to remember. “Of course it’s important because people will look at it and they’ll see a model of how two people commit their lives to one another before God, in the presence of millions of people,” he said. “That’s going to be wonderful, it’s always a beautiful moment. Every wedding is profoundly beautiful.”

As we already know, Markle has to be baptized before the wedding day to become a member of the Church of England. And as opposed to other, bigger royal weddings in the past, there won’t be a procession through London or a balcony kiss for everyone to witness, either. But despite the chill (OK, chill-er affair), don’t fret, you’ll still be able to watch on TV.

Meghan Markle Is Breaking Royal Protocol by Spending Christmas With Prince Harry

One of the most charming anecdotes to come out of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s first sit-down interview last week was about the Queen’s band of corgis. According to Prince Harry, the dogs are typically temperamental and take a while to warm up to new humans; however, they took an instant liking to Markle, cuddling up on her leg as she sat down with the Queen for tea. Dogs are pretty excellent judges of character, TBH, so it’s no wonder Markle was fully and warmly embraced by the Royal Family in such a short period of time. When you have the corgis’ seal of approval, everything else is a piece of cake.

Including scoring an invitation to the Queen’s Christmas party. According to Us Weekly, the annual gathering has historically been “spouses only,” but the Queen bent the rules for Markle. “Attending as a fiancé is a first for the family,” a source tells the magazine. “Given that Meghan doesn’t have family in the U.K., it’s only right that she spends Christmas with Harry and his.”

Just imagine: Had the Queen not granted permission for Markle to attend, she would’ve spent her first Christmas in the U.K. alone. What would she have done? Watched old Suits reruns? Done a private reenactment of her Hallmark movie Sparks Fly? Royal protocol, man. It gets in the way of everything!

“To be able to meet [the Queen] through [Prince Harry’s] lens, not just with his honor and respect for her as the monarch, but the love that he has for her as his grandmother, all of those layers have been so important for me,” Markle said in her sit-down interview last week. “When I met her, I had such a deep understanding and, of course, incredible respect for being able to have that time with her.”

Meghan Markle Just Made a $670 Bag Sell Out

Once you become royalty—not that I’m speaking from experience—every single choice you make is scrutinized, and in the case of Meghan Markle’s fashion, every choice has sent stampedes of shoppers clamoring for their own identical coat/bag/dress. This isn’t exactly a new phenomenon—Kate Middleton‘s style choices famously drain accessible brands out of their stock—but it’s clear that the Meghan Markle effect is taking hold.

Just a few days after Canadian brand Line the Label literally renamed a coat after her after she wore to announce her engagement to Prince Harry, the handbag she carried during the couple’s first official outing in Nottingham on Friday has officially sold out.

To be fair, it’s a great bag. Designed by Strathberry, an Edinburgh-based label, the bag’s bordeaux leather exterior is accented by a peacock-blue fold and vanilla handle held in place by a gold crossbar.

PHOTO: Samir Hussein/WireImage

Strathberry, a brand found in luxury department stores around the world, told ELLE UK that after Markle’s appearance with its Tricolor Midi Tote, the bag sold out in 11 minutes. Eleven! The bag, by the way, goes for £495, or $667 at today’s exchange rate. (If you’re happy to carry another color, they start at £455, or $613 at current exchange rates.)

The sell-out effect is on par with Line the Label’s newly renamed coat: After Markle’s coat was ID’d in the outfit credits from coverage of her Nottingham visit, the brand’s website actually crashed as everyone tried to buy their own $626.50 coat.

If you want to get your hands on Markle’s Strathberry bag…well, you’ll have to wait until after the new year, when the brand says it will restock the style. But considering that Markle’s stylist, Jessica Mulroney, is also dressing Canada’s elegant Sophie Grégoire-Trudeau—wife of, yes, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau—it’s more than likely the Markle Effect won’t be slowing down anytime soon.

Wait, Are Prince Harry and Meghan Markle the 'Love Actually' Kids?

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s royal engagement has been very distracting this week. Between news of Harry’s real first name and the blinding dazzle of Markle’s ring, the approaching holiday season, with all the classic movies that come along with it, has almost been eclipsed—almost. Luckily, comedian Travon Free remembered to have his annual Love Actually viewing, because he made a fantastic discovery—Harry and his bride to be look a lot like grown-up versions of the film’s cutest almost couple, Sam (Thomas Brodie-Sangster) and Joanna (Olivia Olson).

Free first tweeted out a side-by-side image of the real-life couple and their adorable fictional doppelgangers, according to HuffPost, immediately putting the puzzle pieces together for all the fans of the film. Even Olivia Olson, aka American Joanna, agrees the resemblance is there, posting the side-by-sides on her Instagram with the caption, “Memedom congrats to the happy couple…lol.”

Of course, fans do know exactly what happened to “grown-up Sam and Joanna,” after the continuation of their love story was addressed in a short Love Actuallysequel” released this summer for Red Nose Day. In the short film, Sam, now in his late 20s, meets up with his dad (Liam Neeson), who was so supportive of his youthful courtship, to tell him he’s reunited with Joanna and the two are engaged. It’s truly a love story for the ages, now tied to another great love story.

Go ahead and take this as your Yuletide reminder to rewatch the greatest British anthology Christmas rom-com ever made, and listen to “All I Want For Christmas Is You” on repeat while gazing at photos of Meghan and Prince Harry. A Merry Christmas, indeed.
