Jennifer Lopez and Shakira's Super Bowl Halftime Show Is Being Called ‘Inappropriate’

Jennifer Lopez and Shakira delivered an unsurprisingly epic halftime show at this year’s Super Bowl. There was dancing. There was pyro. There were bops. It’s truly everything I hoped it would be (and this is something I’ve been wanting for a while now).

But there’s a certain subset of people out there who think Lopez and Shakira’s halftime performance was “inappropriate” and “too provocative”—an R-rated attack on family values. One columnist from a well-respected newspaper even wrote, “If the Super Bowl is going to be touted as family entertainment, or at least not marketed as adult entertainment, perhaps the NFL has an obligation to warn people with children that what they’re about to see may be upsetting to some viewers.”

Mind you, this is all over Shakira and Lopez’s “skimpy outfits” and “booty shaking,” which is just heterosexual speak for “costumes” and “choreography.” There was nothing inappropriate about what they did onstage—at least, nothing more or less inappropriate than what male halftime performers have done for years. The only difference is that we still exist in a culture that thrives on policing women’s bodies. A culture that says a woman baring her midriff is a threat to the American family but an aging rocker grabbing his crotch is just a Tuesday. That is the issue here—not Jennifer Lopez or Shakira, who delivered one of the best Super Bowl halftime performances in recent memory. (I mean, come on: It started with “She Wolf!” A forgotten gem of a song! That’s gay rights!)

If people are actually outraged by Lopez and Shakira’s set, then it’s only fair they call the moral police on these six (male) halftime heathens too:

His stomach was just so racy. It made me want to be racy too, ya know?

All the Beauty Products Jennifer Lopez Used During Her 2020 Super Bowl Halftime Show

We’re definitely still not over Jennifer Lopez and Shakira‘s incredible Super Bowl halftime show last night in Miami—are you? The energy they created is enough to power us through another week. Along with admiring the incredible moves of these two ageless wonders, we were obsessed with J. Lo‘s glam—the makeup, the hair, the nails. As usual, she showed up and showed out.

While she may have had multiple (miraculously quick) costumes changes, that makeup needed to stay put through a rigorous performance, plus look great on television and in the stadium. We got the full breakdown on the singer’s look from her longtime makeup artist Scott Barnes.

First up was the eyeliner. Barnes used the “boldest, blackest” option he could find—Marc Jacobs Beauty Highliner Gel Eye Crayon in Blacquer—in the lash line and then extended it out to elongate the shape of her eye. Then he used Scott Barnes Snatural Eyeshadow Palette in Foxy and Femme in the crease of the lids and Boudoir and Brickhouse to shape her eyes. Barnes then applied the Sin shadow to add depth to the outer corner of her eyes and on the lower lash line. To add some brightness to the inner corners of her eyes, he applied Twilight Sand from his Glowy and Showy Highlighter Palette on the lid and inner corner of her eyes and finished with the Scott Barnes Pumped Up Mascara and Bianca Falsetto Lashes.

Obviously, no J. Lo look is complete without that famous glow. To create it on Super Bowl night, Barnes applied Marc Jacobs Beauty O!Mega Bronzer Coconut Perfect Tan in Tantalize on her forehead and cheekbones. To contour her nose, he mixed Marc Jacobs Beauty O!Mega Bronzer Perfect Tan in Tantric with the Scott Barnes Sculpting and Contour Palette in Sliced. He then covered her chest and arms with Scott Barnes Original Body Bling, the OG of body glow creams.

And then there was that hair, styled by Chris Appleton, who was touching up the look mere minutes before Lopez took the stage. You’ve probably seen the meme of it going around on Instagram.

Here’s how the Color Wow Creative Director created that massive and gorgeous head of hair. First, Appleton applied Color Wow Dream Coat Anti-Humidity Hair Treatment to create a base and add shine. Then he blow dried the hair smooth with the Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer on medium heat and speed. Once that was done, he curled Lopez’s hair with a 2-inch curling iron, clipping each section to the root to cool before releasing them and brushing out with a Tangle Teezer brush, creating all that movement we saw on stage. Appleton then grabbed the curling iron again and added in detailed pieces around her head.

Can we start a petition to have Jennifer Lopez do this all over again next year?

Super Bowl 2020 Halftime Show: Watch Jennifer Lopez and Shakira's Incredible Performance

Jennifer Lopez and Shakira headlined the Super Bowl 2020 halftime show, which happened Sunday, February 2, and they certainly did not disappoint. Both women are known for their impeccable, awe-inspiring showmanship: choreography, theatrics, an X-factor, the works. And they brought all of those elements to (arguably) the world’s biggest stage for 12 glorious minutes.

The performance was a seamless hybrid of Lopez and Shakira’s discographies. They performed songs both together and apart. And they didn’t miss a beat, either. That’s to be expected, of course: After all, they’re both total pros who have been in this business for decades. It’s no surprise they delivered one of the best halftime shows in recent memory.

Both Shakira and Lopez performed several of their greatest hits, including “She Wolf,” “Whenever, Wherever,” “Jenny From the Block,” “Let’s Get Loud,” and “On the Floor.”

But I’ll stop talking and let the fans tell you how they did. Check out some reactions, below:

Lopez and Shakira released the sweetest statements about each other when it was announced they’d be co-headlining the Super Bowl 2020 halftime show.

“I’m so honored to be taking on one of the world’s biggest stages in the company of a fellow female artist to represent Latinos and Latinas from the U.S. and all over the world—and to top it off, on my birthday. This is a true American dream and we are going to bring the show of a lifetime!” Shakira said, while Lopez added, ““Ever since I saw Diana Ross fly off into the sky at the halftime show, I dreamed of performing at the Super Bowl. And now it’s made even more special not only because it’s the NFL’s 100th anniversary, but also because I am performing with a fellow Latina. I can’t wait to show what us girls can do on the world’s biggest stage.”

This year has already been big for Lopez, who earned Golden Globe and SAG nominations for her performance in the movie Hustlers. Shakira, meanwhile, went on a world tour in 2018 that spanned 54 dates across Europe, Asia, North America, and Latin America.

Alex Rodriguez Wrote a Heartwarming Note to Jennifer Lopez After Her Golden Globes Loss

Jennifer Lopez was nominated at the Golden Globes Sunday night (January 5) for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Hustlers. Unfortunately, she didn’t win (Laura Dern did for Marriage Story), but I have a feeling she isn’t sweating it—especially not after the sweet note her fiancé, Alex Rodriguez, posted to Instagram.

Shortly after the Golden Globes wrapped, the baseball veteran wrote this tribute to Lopez:

“Jen, it doesn’t take a trophy, medal, or plaque to identify a true champion. To millions of young women who have watched you and have been inspired and empowered to do amazing things in their lives, you are a champion. For countless musicians, dancers, actresses, and performers who have seen and emulate your passion, drive and work ethic to find their own success, you are a champion. To your children, your family, your coaches, your staff, and your extended family, you are a champion. To everyone whose lives you enrich daily, you are a champion. And don’t you ever forget it.”

Of course, those who follow Alex Rodriguez and Jennifer Lopez‘s relationship closely shouldn’t be surprised by this public display of affection. He’s always showing that he’s her number-one fan—whether that’s through being the perfect Instagram fiancé on the red carpet, or just saying the most affectionate words.

“I can’t believe it’s been two years,” he wrote on Instagram in February 2019 in honor of their two-year anniversary. “Only 730 days, which have flown by, but it feels like we have been together forever. We are meant to be, and how much you mean to me cannot be put into words.” He added, “Like you there is none other. Words will never do justice to what the last two years have meant to me. Thank you for always being you, for your unwavering support and unconditional love.”

Jennifer Lopez Hosted SNL and Changed Into That Versace Dress on Stage

Jennifer Lopez hosted Saturday Night Live over the weekend and her opening monologue featured a show-stopping quick-change into that Versace dress that’s basically become her legacy (it’s the updated version she pulled out on a runway earlier this year to remind people of her iconic 2001 Grammys look.) The whole bit was framed around how J.Lo has been having her best year ever—she got engaged to Alex Rodriguez, she had a huge sold-out tour, she starred in Hustlers, and, believe it or not, she turned 50. She was so euphoric she broke out into a Christmas song (complete with a Rockettes kick line) that ended with her tearing off a chic tuxedo and revealing the famed deep-V gown.

J.Lo had a lot to celebrate. “I got what every girl from the Bronx dreams of: proposed to by a Yankee,” she joked during her first few minutes onstage while also listing the success of Hustlers and her recent tour. “And I slayed the Met Gala. And that’s not a brag. A doctor diagnosed it on the spot as a fourth-degree slay.”

But the big moment was when she showed off the dress—a nod to her SNL hosting gig in 2001, which also involved the Versace piece. That year, she’d cracked about how her mom had always told her to be prepared, so she’d worn the gown under a purple bathrobe. There had even been a split-second when Bill Hader tried to pull off the beloved fashion moment.

Donatella Versace shouted J.Lo out on Instagram, posting videos from her 2001 SNL appearance and her taking over the mic this week. “Jennifer on SNL in the original jungle dress in 2001, she is still so beautiful today, who can tell the difference!?” she wrote in the caption of the older clip.

Afterward, J.Lo reflected on all the good stuff that’s happened to her in 2019 and commemorated her hosting gig with a photo. “This year has brought many blessings. @nbcsnl, thanks for being one of them. #TheBestIsYetToCome,” she wrote on Instagram.

Kim Kardashian and Jennifer Lopez Friendship Involves Karaoke Nights and Taco Tuesdays

Kim Kardashian and Jennifer Lopez have a “very, very close” friendship, according to Alex Rodriguez. The former MLB player opened up about his fiancée’s “beautiful” relationship with the Keeping Up With the Kardashians star in a new interview, revealing the women spend a lot of time together. In fact, they’ve become each other’s mentors and do fun things like Taco Tuesdays and even the occasional karaoke night.

“We’ve all known each other for a long time,” Rodriguez told People.”But Kim and Jennifer are very, very close, and she’s almost like a mentee of Jennifer, and Jennifer’s mentored her a lot over the years.”

“Now, they just go back and forth,” Rodriquez continued. “They mentor each other and they have this really beautiful relationship that goes back over a decade and a half, and it’s nice to do anything with Kim and our family.”

He also shared a few details regarding what a typical Kardashian-West-Lopez-Rodriquez hangout session consists of. The athlete said they often spend the the holidays together, and also often do movie and karaoke nights, where he admitted Kardashian is a “really good” singer.

Last December, Lopez and Rodriguez also attended Kardashian’s star-studded Christmas Eve party—and it looks like the couple will attend this year as well.

All three of them recently teamed up for a holiday campaign to promote the Portal device, which sees Kardashian and Lopez rocking face masks and discussing “top secret” holiday party ideas before Rodriquez walks in and interrupts them.

“My bestie @jlo and I are always on the move. But @PortalFacebook smart video calling always keeps up with us… and @arod too,” Kardashian tweeted.

Last year, Kardashian also gushed over her friendship with Lopez on her Instagram Story, admitting the Hustlers star is her inspiration and telling fans that “dreams do come true.”

“If you would have said to me 10 years ago, ‘Jennifer Lopez is coming over for your house to watch a movie and to have dinner’ I never would have imagined this would have been my life!” she said.

Now let’s just hope JLo and her karaoke makes its debut on KUWTK next season.
