The Best Red Lipstick That Looks Good on Everyone – Photos

In case you haven’t heard, it’s National Lipstick Day. Since Huda Kattan proclaimed July 29 the “holiday” in 2016, it’s taken on a life of its own as brands clamor to get us buy lipstick in honor of the occasion. The sales this year are excellent, the options are plenty, and narrowing down which to get could literally be a job for 10 people. And we quite do mean literally—given that’s exactly what we did in order to find the best red lipstick worth buying today.

Why red lipstick? Well, of all the questions we’re frequently asked, What’s the best red lipstick? tops the list. It’s no surprise why. Red lipstick has that elusive quality that makes you look “done” in three seconds. There are some so famous, they’re instantly recognizable by look or name alone: MAC Ruby Woo, Dior 999, Giorgio Armani in 400 (also known as “Armani Red”), to name a few. But there are also thousands of other reds on the market, many of which are underrated diamonds in the rough.

To that end, though, while the right red can be an instant look-maker, the wrong red can be a disaster. Add personal preference on finish and texture into the mix, and you’d be hard pressed to find a red lipstick that truly everyone likes. So we decided to put the impossible to the test: We swiped, swatched, and snacked our way through 100 shades to see if one rose above the rest. Spoiler: We actually landed on a few.

The Process

Some people do brackets for sports, we do brackets for lipstick. First we called in a mix of new and classic shades from a range of drugstore to high-end brands. Then 10 Glamour staffers with different skin tones and hair colors (including pink) were given a random assortment of 10 lipsticks a piece. Each of us was tasked with testing our options, then narrowing down the group to the single best red lipstick. We were mainly focused on color, but texture and application were also taken into consideration.

Just a selection of the lipsticks we tried.

Bella Cacciatore

After everyone selected a favorite, we had the whole group try the top 10 shades. If even one person didn’t like a color, it was out of the running. From there, we whittled it down to three truly universally flattering red lipsticks and put the number one to a vote.

The Results

A bunch of the names in the top 10 probably won’t surprise you, but there were a few standout newcomers. Maybelline came through with three shades in the running: Maybelline Super Stay Ink in Pioneer (which one of testers confirmed you can, indeed, sleep in it and won’t budge), along with Ruby For Me and Red For Me, which isn’t too shocking given that the brand actually tested both shades on 50 women across various skin tones to ensure they look great on everyone.

You probably also have these MAC shades committed to memory: Russian Red (an intense matte blue-red our producer, Khaliha, was obsessed with) and the famous true red-blue, Ruby Woo, which someone on staff generally has a tube of at their desk in case of emergencies.

5 Women Try Meghan Markle's Favorite Lipstick

The “Markle Effect”—i.e. the phenomenon of royal stans rushing to buy every outfit Meghan Markle leaves the house in—has been well documented by this point. Who hasn’t seriously considered impulse buying a tuxedo dress? But one of the less discussed abilities Markle holds is the power to make certain beauty products fly off the shelves. Take Tatcha’s Rice Polish, which promptly began selling out after headlines declared her love for it.

Unfortunately, Markle’s becoming royal means she’s no longer able to openly discuss her routine (which is why the source of Kate Middleton’s blowout was nearly impossible to pinpoint for so long). Luckily for us, because of her years spent in Hollywood, we already have some intel on her favorite products and makeup preferences—the biggest being the reason you’ll never see her in red lipstick.

Last year, Markle’s makeup artist Daniel Martin shared with People why she tends to favor nudes over bold shades like red or plum. “She likes to talk and she’s not a fussy person, so she doesn’t want to have to worry about anything,” he said. Naturally, you can imagine this sent the Internet into a tailspin, and rumors flew abound about what her mystery shade could be. And while we’ll never have official palace confirmation, word on the street is that her perfect nude is Charlotte Tilbury’s Matte Revolution Lipstick in Very Victoria.

It’s a makeup artist favorite, constant best-seller, and it’s actually got a rather interesting connection to one of Markle’s wedding guests. Like many of Tilbury’s lipsticks, the shade is named after one of her celebrity muses—which in this case, refers to the woman formerly known as Posh Spice. Very Victoria is designed to compliment Victoria Beckham’s signature smoky eye, and has a dusty-pink tint to give it a bit of warmth, which helps make nudes feel more wearable. It’s also got a reputation for looking great on a range of skin tones.

It’ll probably only be matter of time until Tilbury creates a custom lipstick exclusively named after Meghan. In early 2018, she made a satin-finish tea-rose pink lipstick called The Duchess, inspired by Kate Middleton’s go-to nude. She’s also got a Matte Revolution shade designed after the head of the monarchy, herself, The Queen, a cerise-pink matte that instantly became a top-seller.

Until then, there’s Victoria. To see if the Markle Sparkle carries over to those of us who aren’t legitimate royalty, we had five Glamour staffers put Very Victoria to the test. Read on for our honest thoughts.

I’m a huge fan of every Charlotte Tilbury product I’ve ever tried, and Very Victoria is no different. Firstly, I loved the creamy texture and how moisturizing it felt on my lips, especially for a matte lipstick. As for the color, as someone who usually goes for a bright lip, I actually really loved this one. It picked up the pinker undertones on my skin and wasn’t as brown on my lips as it was in the tube which was a pleasant surprise.

This lipstick is very similar to my all time favorite lip color, Nars Sheer Lipstick in Falbala. They’re both very similar to my natural lip color, but this one is a little more matte and pink. It was easy to put on and didn’t require a lot of effort to make it work, but didn’t have as much hydration as my usual lipsticks.

It’s hard to find a good neutral lipstick but this one is perfect. Not only does it match my lip color nicely, but I thought it actually made my lips look a little bigger. I was also worried it would look strange with my colored eyeliner (I’ve been wearing a different color every day, recently) but it really pulled the look together. This may just be my new go-to.

Charlotte Tilbury Pillow Talk Review – Why It's Best Pink Lipstick Ever

I’ve always wanted a trademark lipstick like Taylor Swift—a “red lip, classic thing” that immediately registers as mine. It didn’t necessarily have to be red. Any shade would do, if it had the elusive 24/7 wearability of a so-called signature.

Singling out a lipstick I’d want to wear day in and day out—and that spoke to who I am at the same time—became my beauty obsession early this year. Like a freshman at college orientation, I took a “try everything once” approach to my hunt. I’ve tested cherry and candy apple reds; “universal” nudes with mauve and orange undertones; and, in a Chilling Adventures of Sabrina-inspired moment of edginess, matte blacks and dark blues. Lipstick speed-dating introduced me to shades I wouldn’t have sampled otherwise, but they felt more like occasion lipsticks than an everyday pick.

On the other side of those tests, I knew the most “me” shade would fall somewhere between a nude and a pink. It had to be both polished and a little preppy—something that says I get my inspiration from pop singers (see above) and Kate Spade editorials. I eventually turned to the Glamour beauty team for lipstick guidance and got an immediate recommendation: Charlotte Tilbury’s Matte Revolution Lipstick in a shade called Pillow Talk.

Honestly, I was a little underwhelmed by the light mauve pink in the tube. This? This the lipstick people rave about? While the packaging was beautiful, the color itself didn’t seem like anything extraordinary. Then I put it on.

Mattes I had tested on my lipstick journey left my lips flaky and dry. Charlotte Tilbury’s lipstick glided on with a cashmere softness on the first try. I couldn’t believe the quality. No, really—just look at the Slacks I sent our beauty assistant, Bella, about it.

It was love at first swipe.

Out of the tube, the tone has a subtle glow. One coat enhances my natural lip color; two or three more, and I have a pink lip that’s just shy of a berry tone. In other words, it’s exactly what I was looking for.

After that first test, I started wearing Pillow Talk every day. Most mornings, I swipe on two coats of it and get moving. When I have more time, I line and fill in my lips with the corresponding Pillow Talk Lip Cheat lip liner. It adds a hint of volume—and my lipstick doesn’t budge through my morning and afternoon coffees with the extra grip.

I’m not the only one who’s named Pillow Talk my desert island lipstick since giving it a try. I share an obsession with Amal Clooney, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Kate Moss, apparently. Then, there are the several thousand #pillowtalklipstick posts (and counting) singing the shade’s praises on Instagram. The fandom is so intense, Charlotte Tilbury even created an entire Pillow Talk collection featuring blush and eyeshadow palettes that riff on the mauve-pink shade—which promptly sold out (and was quickly restocked) when it launched last season.

I have yet to try the entire collection, but it’s only a matter of time—Pillow Talk is worth every cent. This natural, tawny pink always goes on smooth and, somehow, hydrates my lips. It’s low-key enough to wear to meetings or appointments, but the buildable tone can look “done” enough for drinks after work. People from my mom to the cashier at my neighborhood Walgreens have told me it suits me. I have to agree: I can’t see myself wearing anything else.

See Kim Kardashians' KKW Red Lipstick on 5 Different Women

Kim Kardashian has made an empire off her image. Want her contoured cheeks? There’s a KKW contour kit for that. Her smoky eye? Try this palette. Those curves? She literally immortalized them as fragrance bottle. One thing she isn’t known for, however, is a red lip. (In the fam, that would actually be five-year-old North.) But that hasn’t stopped Kim from launching a new line of KKW Beauty red lipsticks and matching liner in time for Valentine’s Day.

The Red Créme Lipstick (which comes in four shades: Classic Red, Hot Sauce, Candy Apple, Cherry Pop) has the same creamy formula and modern packaging as the brand’s famous nudes. But it’s the Classic Red that really shines in the collection—which we mean quite literally with its satin finish. With a holiday marketed around red and pink right around the corner, we put the hero from KKW’s reds to the test. Read on to see what our editors thought.

Kim Kardashian Defends Decision to Let Daughter North Wear Red Lipstick

Kim Kardashian is once again faced with defending her parenting decisions on the internet after posting family photos that featured her five-year-old daughter, North West, wearing red lipstick.

The photos of the Kardashian-West crew were from the family’s annual Christmas Eve party which, this year, featured snow machines and sledding. As with most things Kardashian, people online had a lot of opinions about why a little girl was wearing makeup at all. No stranger to mommy-shaming when it comes to her daughter’s beauty choices (like straightening her hair), Kardashian was quick to let everyone know exactly where she stood about her daughter’s look.

“A little too much! Makeup and posing! How old is she? And a lot of attitude,” one commenter wrote about North. “Famous or not it’s odd for a 5 year old to be wearing lipstick and makeup. Nice family pics tho,” said another.

Some Instagram commenters questioned why North wasn’t wearing children’s makeup. But as Glamour reported earlier this year, kids’ makeup is not regulated and so it actually may be better to let your children wear the grown-up versions which must adhere to stricter guidelines.

But others were absolutely here for it. “North is serving looks! That girl is going to take over one day ?,” one commented. Another called North a “future beauty guru.”

It turns out that prediction may be correct as Kardashian confirmed that not only did her daughter pick out that red lip all on her own, but that the shade will be coming soon to her KKW Beauty line. (That’s certainly a new way to announced a product launch!)

As someone who spent her childhood playing in her mom’s makeup, I say, let her have fun and get made up for a fun family party. And I must say, her taste is impeccable because that is a really good classic red and now I can’t wait to see the rest of the collection. Hopefully, North will earn some royalties.
