See Fenty Beauty's Nude Stunna Lip Paints on 4 Women

When Rihanna launched Fenty Beauty’s Stunna Lip Paint last year—a bold blue-red shade based off her signature look—she didn’t just drop a red lipstick. Rih went all out with a weightless formula that glides on smooth and dries into a velvety matte finish. The brand flooded Instagram with photos of everyone from Slick Woods to Duckie Thot wearing the color to show how versatile it was. And Rihanna even made her own Insta tutorial for it. Honestly, would you expect anything less?

Which is why it should come as no surprise that now, almost a year later, she’s coming in even hotter with four new additions to the Stunna family. This time, they’re nudes for every skin tone. And black—because in Rihanna’s world, you better believe that’s a neutral. As Fenty revealed the colors one by one last week, the fan responses came pouring in. Women of color praised Fenty for finally creating a nude in mind for dark skin (a “universal chocolate brown” called Unveil), which the brand says went through rigorous testing to confirm the claim. The black (surprise, surprise) was also met with similar enthusiasm, if not some slight hesitation.

The question, of course, you probably want to know though is if they’re worth the hype. We had four staffers put them to the test. Read on for their honest thoughts.

Tatcha The Kissu Lip Mask Review: How It Saved My Lips

“Dude, your lips are really chapped,” my younger brother said to me a little more than a week ago, his voice a mix of disgust and concern. If he can be counted on for anything, it’s his brutally honest, unfiltered, and sometimes unnecessary commentary.

I was immediately embarrassed. But more than that, I was frustrated because I had just slathered on lip balm and sealed it in with a coat of Vaseline. It didn’t work. Nothing ever worked.

Eight years ago, when I was a burgeoning beauty editor, I tasked myself with the impossible—and now in hindsight, stupid—mission to test all the new lipsticks, stains, and glosses I had received for that month. In one sitting. I swiped one on, and then wiped it off. Swiped another, and wiped it off. There must have been at least 20. And by the end, I had peeled an entire layer of skin off my lips. They were swollen, red, and just really, really angry. I attempted to soothe them with lip balm and then waited with the hope—oh, the naivete!— that they would quickly calm down.

The next day, the swelling had subsided somewhat, but in its place was a hardened, chapped mess that itched and burned at the touch of anything. My toothpaste made them hurt. So did water. I soon discovered smiling was out of the question; anything larger than a slight smirk led to them cracking and then bleeding. Crying for help, I turned to my roommate who swore by A&D, the diaper rash ointment, for healing cuts and softening dry skin. Desperate, I took her tube (I bought her a new one) and carried it with me everywhere, surreptitiously applying (because, diaper rash ointment) a layer before any activity that involved my mouth. My then-boyfriend, now-husband, will forever associate kissing me with A&D, which is both very weird and very unfortunate.

I didn’t realize what I had done was given myself lip dermatitis or a form of eczema called eczematous cheilitis. A&D helped rescue my lips, but they were never quite the same after that—they’ve been chronically chapped since. I quietly dealt with it by having a mini vessel of Vaseline with me at all times, avoiding irritants (I couldn’t eat spicy food, my favorite, for years), and all other lip products.

I slowly began trying new balms and formulas again, cautiously one-by-one. But it wasn’t until after my brother’s comment, when I tried Tatcha’s Kissu Lip Mask—the first product that wasn’t (1) designed for a baby’s butt and (2) formulated with petroleum jelly—that my lips didn’t completely rebel against.

Tatcha’s founder Victoria Tsai had once also given herself dermatitis from overzealously experimenting with beauty products, which ultimately led to the creation of a clean beauty brand that was free of all bad-for-you properties, like parabens, synthetic fragrances, sulfates, and phthalates. But what makes the lip mask so unique is its texture: It goes on like a jelly but it melts into a non-sticky liquid sheet mask.

What convinced me to try it was when Victoria Tsai, Tatcha’s founder, told me that she’d once also given herself dermatitis from experimenting with beauty products, which ultimately led to the creation of her clean beauty brand. The Kissu lip mask was born in much the same way as all of Tatcha’s offerings: It’s free of parabens, synthetic fragrances, sulfates, and phthalates. But what really makes it interesting is its texture: It goes on like a jelly but it melts into a non-sticky liquid sheet mask. (The formula, I’m told, took a team of scientists more than a year to perfect.)

The mask looks like light pink Jell-O, and it’s contained in the cutest little tub that comes with a tiny gold spatula, which makes the whole experience feel like you’re a fancy giant scooping out dessert.

It’s meant to be used as an overnight treatment, so I applied it at night right before bed. And in the morning, when I saw that it didn’t make my lips worse, I patted on some more. And a few more times in the afternoon. Three days later, after regular use, my lips—for the first time in eight years—were chap-, scale-, and itch-free. This must be what a normal human with functioning lips feels like, I marveled. This must be what my husband, who never uses chapstick or balm or any type of lip salve and never has had to suffer the agony of having chapped lips in his life, feels like.

So why does it work so well? “It’s a combination of the active ingredients and the form,” Tsai explains. “The jelly formula absorbs more easily than waxes, delivering active ingredients like Japanese peach seed extract, three Japanese rose extracts, and Japanese Camellia Oil, which nourish, repair, and protect the lips.”

And with that, my eight-year-long lip saga has come to an end. So suck on that, little brother.

Women Are Praising Rihanna for Creating a 'Universal Nude' Lip in Chocolate Brown

Rihanna and her team have proven time and time again that Fenty Beauty is here to shake up the beauty industry and push for more inclusivity. This time, the brand is taking on the idea of a “universal nude” by offering a new shade of its Stunna Lip Paint in a rich brown chocolate. Rihanna secretly wore the latest Stunna Lip Paint—which is called “Unveil”—at her Savage x Fenty fashion show during New York Fashion Week, and the brand took to social media on Friday to announce the addition: “@badgalriri tested SEVERAL shades before landing on this rich chocolate brown that looks good on EVERYBODY!”

“Get ready for this universal chocolate BO$$ nude, that comes in your favorite lip paint formula and dries in a soft-matte finish,” another Instagram caption reads. “One swipe of this liquid lip is enough to get you a long-lasting lip that’ll catch every eye!”

Soon after, women on Twitter were quick to note what this means for women of color and share their appreciation. “Rihanna dropped a ‘universal nude’ in a shade called ‘chocolate’. We are the Fenty default,” one fan wrote. “Never in my life have I been part of the standard or default. Rihanna really did that,” another praised.

As Glamour pointed out earlier this year, consumers have begun to demand a more inclusive selection of nude makeup. The popular social media hashtag #notmynude called out most “universal” shades for excluding women of color, an issue that Fenty Beauty has addressed since the company’s start. Fenty’s inaugural 40-shade foundation range earned the brand praise—not to mention Time magazine’s award for “Invention of the Year“—and led other brands to follow suit with inclusive shade ranges of their own.

Fans can get their hands on it themselves for $24 at Sephora and Fentybeauty.com.

It Sure Looks Like Lip Kit Queen Kylie Jenner Went Makeup-Free on This *Vogue* Cover

Kylie Jenner just turned 21, and celebrated not only with a fully booked weekend of festivities but also with a Vogue cover, as you do. Jenner is also a billionaireearning in two hours what most Americans make in a year—having created a virtual empire from her lip kits, which have blossomed into full-on makeup collections. Makeup has always been a part of the Kardashian look, and Jenner is one of the sisters who leans into it the most: The women in the family tend to wield contoured faces, feathery lashes, and, especially in Jenner’s case, full lips (she’s recently gotten rid of her lip filler, however).

So when the September cover of Vogue Australia was revealed, it was a big surprise that Jenner’s look wasn’t all strobing and baking and contouring—no judgement, just par for the course with the KarJenners. Instead, Jenner looked…almost makeup-free?

She’s photographed with an artfully wavy lob and a stripped-down version of the look we normally see from her: There might be a bit of blush and lipstick (lip gloss, even) going on—we doubt it’s totally, 100-percent free of makeup—but it’s a relative smidgen.

Her makeup artist also ‘grammed about the cover, implying that the look came down to some (incredible) moisturizer: “This is So Major!! @vogueaustralia I would love to Say Makeup by me! but its Really Moisturizer by Ariel?❤️ i feel beyond blessed to be apart of this moment with you @kyliejenner ❤️#makeupbyariel #kyliejenner”

We’ve seen more and more pared-down looks on magazine-covering celebs lately: Ariana Grande let her freckles show on the July cover of British Vogue; Christina Aguilera did the same for Paper earlier this year. These covers are symbolic of seeing these women—all of whom were on the verge of a major change (a new album for Aguilera, a new album plus an engagement for Grande)—in new lights.

Jenner’s life, of course, has been full of milestones lately: Besides the whole billionaire thing, she’s also setting into to being a mom—and wearing hair extensions worth $8,000 for her 21st-birthday look. Whatever’s coming next, it certainly seems like she’s ready for it.

Kylie Jenner Reveals She Got Rid of Her Lip Filler

The basis of Kylie Jenner’s $420 million makeup empire might have started around her famously Juvaderm’ed lips, but it’s looking like her interest in the pillowy look is deflating. On Instagram Sunday night, Jenner revealed that she’s done with filler—for now at least.

The speculation first started when fans began commenting that she looked an awful lot like the “Old Kylie” in a new photo she’d posted; to which the new mom responded, “I got rid of all my filler,” which was captured on the Comments By Celebs account. Of course, Instagram and Twitter blew up in reaction to the announcement.

If there’s one person who can be singlehandedly credited to the rise of fillers—for better or worse—it’s Jenner. When the then 17-year-old revealed on Keeping Up With the Kardashians that her lips had been enhanced (and not just overlined, as she previously claimed), it virtually changed beauty standards overnight. “When she first talked about her minimal cosmetic procedures I saw a new trend of younger women who suddenly felt empowered to unapologetically want to look more beautiful. It’s like Kylie singlehandedly gave a whole generation the ticket to a more enhanced version of themselves,” Dr. Simon Ourian, the man behind Jenner’s signature lips, said in a WWD interview late last year.

It sounds like hyperbole, but he’s not wrong. In the year following Jenner’s reveal that she’d gotten injections, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons reported a double-digit increase in the number of lip procedures performed. Some clinics even reported they had a 70-percent increase in inquiries about injections the day after that famous KUWTK episode aired.

Where talking about cosmetic enhancements was once considered taboo, the stigma attached to it dissolved. Not only that, injections became a status symbol. “I had treated hundreds of celebrities before but very few of them were bold enough to share their secrets with such transparency,” Dr. Ourian added. “Her influence was much that what was once a taboo has now become a bragging right. People want to brag about having their lips done. My social media patients put up a selfie with me so that they can say they came to our office.”

The reactions, suffice to say, have been coming in hot and fast on social media, with responses ranging from everything including how great Jenner looks to wondering whether this means injections are dead or not.

While it’s too soon to tell what—if any—effect her move will have, knowing her influence, if she says injections are dunzo, it could be the end of the Insta look as we know it. Or at least the beginning of a Kylie “Natural Lips” Kit.

Alicia Silverstone Just Resurrected Cher Horowitz for Lip Sync Battle

Cher Horowitz is back. Four years after Iggy Azalea cosplayed as Alicia Silverstone‘s character in Clueless for her “Fancy” music video, Silverstone’s returning the favor. The American Woman actress appears on this week’s episode of Lip Sync Battle, and she performs—you guessed it—”Fancy.” And not just that: She wears Cher’s classic yellow plaid outfit—the one Azalea wears in the “Fancy” video—in the performance. So, essentially, Silverstone is tributing Azalea’s tribute to her. Meta!

The fateful homage-within-a-homage will air this Thursday’s on Lip Sync Battle, where Silverstone goes head to head with her American Woman co-star, Mena Suvari. According to a press release, the battle immediately follows an episode of American Woman on Paramount Network.

In the preview clip, below, Silverstone walks down a set of makeshift stairs while mouthing the opening to Azalea’s “Fancy.” Her back-up dancers are all made up as era-appropriate extras from Clueless, too. One dancer even dressed as Cher’s best friend, Dionne, in her equally-famous blue plaid skirt suit and straw top hat.

The crowd, of course, eats it all up, as does Lip Sync Battle‘s co-host, Chrissy Teigen. “Modern-day Cher,” she says in the clip. “This is amazing. I had no idea how badly I needed to see that. Again!” (Same.)

Check it out for yourself, below:

We got a sneak peek of Teigen’s fangirling last October, when the episode was actually filmed. At the time, the Lip Sync Battle host and Twitter sage tweeted a photo of herself and her daughter, Luna, posing with Silverstone. “How am I supposed to sleep?” she wrote in the caption. “I think I’ve asked for 2 photos in my entire life. @AliciaSilv and beyonce.”

Given how long we’ve been waiting for this pop cultural milestone to happen, it’d better knock our knee socks off. Based on Teigen’s reaction, though, it seems like it’ll be everything we hoped for, and then some.

Lip Sync Battle returns this Thursday, June 14 at 10:30 P.M. ET on Paramount Network.
