Nars Orgasm Lip Balm Does Magic for Your Face


You’ve probably heard of Nars Orgasm by now, the iconic blush that’s as close to a universally-flattering shade as the world will ever see. (The magic’s all in the rose-gold tone, which looks bad on no one. Seriously: We checked.) I’ve never tried it—not because I didn’t want to drink the kool-aid, but because I don’t wear much makeup at all. It’s not that I don’t need it. I’m just a minimalist (read: lazy).

Anyway, the runaway success of Nars Orgasm, which debuted in 1999 and is still the best-selling blush in the US, led to more Orgasm-toned riffs from the brand beyond the original, like liquid blush and satin lipstick. It’s just good business sense. But, as with the blush that started it all, none of these Orgasm-inspired follow-ups have really tempted me—until their new Orgasm Afterglow Lip Balm showed up.

I’m aware that I have a lip balm problem. I mean, losing a good one can send me into a existential tailspin. But this particular balm is more than just a balm. It gives off the sheerest tint of gold-flecked, peachy rose, the same exact tone that made the namesake blush famous.

And you wouldn’t think that this would make that big a difference, but trust me, it does. Here’s why: While my makeup routine is more basic than a PSL-stained Ugg boot, it can veer a little too much so—like I just rolled out of bed and barely got my shoes onto the right feet. And while that’s a cool look if I don’t have plans (so, pretty often) it’s far less appropriate if I have a meeting, run into an ex-boyfriend, or find myself in a situation where it’s important that I don’t look like I’ve been dragged out from under a rock against my will.

This lip balm is the most low-effort way to look like I put in some effort. The finish is a slight sheen—not enough to be glossy, but definitely not matte—so it catches just enough light to add brightness. And the warm, rose-gold tone delivers a shade similar to my natural lip color, but with the sort of flush I imagine they’d have if I’d been kissing my boyfriend or, like, Riz Ahmed for nine hours. Plus, it’s infused with monoï oil, which is what gives it that soft, balm-y feel. Think of this lip balm as summer’s retort to the fussy, high-maintenance liquid lipstick of winters past. It makes me look just polished enough for wherever I need to be, and then I can go house a burger without having to check a reflective surface every five seconds.

Odds are that this lip balm won’t reach the same level of stardom as the blush. (Few things will, TBH.) But if you’re looking for a good, summery lip color that’ll work just as well at a weekend BBQ as it will on a date, you’ve found it.

Labello Lip Balm: Why It's Perfect for Chapped Lips


Something about traveling for me invariably means losing lip balm. There was the time I was outside of Taos, New Mexico, stuck Yelping the nearest Walgreens. Another time I frantically searched the aisles of a tiny health food store in Ojai, California. And maybe most memorably, when I was 19 backpacking through Italy one summer, desperately looking for the nearest neon green pharmacy sign. It happens a lot; my collection of lip balms I haven’t lost yet basically serve as postcards from the places I’ve been. The one thing about a lip balm emergency, though, is that you usually can’t be picky—literally anything will do—which has led to a lot of so-so discoveries.

But when I was in Rome earlier this fall, again with insanely chapped lips, I found myself once more looking around another foreign pharmacy. And that’s when I saw Labello, the very same balm I fell in love with (and promptly ran out of) during my backpacking trip so many years before. It’s technically a German brand, but Italians love it. Rightly so, because it’s the cushiest balm on the planet. It’s both no-frills and wildly luxurious feeling. You know how your lips look and feel after a shower—all plumped up and ridiculously moisturized, basically peak hydration? That’s exactly what you get with this balm. The scent is a non-annoying blend of shea butter and almond oil, and it leaves this perfect blurred-out finish. I’m very into the retro packaging with its ‘80s skiing-in-the-Alps vibe. But most important is its staying power. It’s the perfect companion to lipstick, no matter how drying the formula. It does its job well. So this time around I picked up a couple tubes of the classic flavor and a tinted berry one.

I later came to learn the brand is actually a sister to the widely-available-in-the-US Nivea, but I still love my Labello. And, in an even better recent discovery I made, I can get it Amazon Primed to me by, like, tomorrow—who knows when I’ll be in Italy next.

See Rihanna's Fenty Beauty Stunna Lip Paint on 7 Women


If there’s one thing Rihanna’s made damn well clear about Fenty Beauty, it’s that her makeup brand is for everyone. Since Fenty’s launch three months ago, it’s set the bar for what an inclusive line really looks like—and it has the numbers to prove it. (Those figures, by the way? They go to the tune of $72 million in earned media value in a single month. Those are the kinds of sales the major beauty companies of the world dream of.) So it should be surprise to absolutely no one that when Rihanna announced she had a “universally flattering” red lipstick on the way, she wasn’t kidding around. From the teasers we’ve seen on models like Duckie Thot (shown in the clip below) and Slick Woods, Rihanna’s Stunna Lip Paint holds up to its lofty claims.

Still, it’s one thing to watch Rihanna deliver the coolest lipstick tutorial the Internet’s ever seen. It’s another to put it on yourself. So ahead of the lipstick’s launch at Sephora on Thursday (November 23), we got our hands on a tube, braved passing it around during flu season (it’s what you do when you have access to Fenty), and complimented each other to the point it was almost ridiculous.

“I’m a little self-conscious about my lips (people mention their size all the time), so I normally shy away from bright, punchy colors, but this one is fantastic. It went on so easy and has so much pigment that you don’t have to do a ton of layers. It feels good on your lips, not drying, and it’s so light I kind of forget that it’s on.” —Khaliha Hawkins, digital administrative assistant

“I’m honestly not bad at putting on lipstick. I can swipe even the trickiest formulas on in the back of a moving cab without a problem. But putting this on while standing still in front of a mirror proved unusually difficult. I had to go back over spots with concealer to sharpen up the line. But it was time well spent. I mean, look at the finish. The other downside is that it came off on literally everything my lips touched, and yet, somehow, you couldn’t actually tell the difference on my face. “The color is so pretty on everyone—it’s this really flattering blue, almost neutral red. A lot of bluish reds veer very pink on me, but I didn’t get that problem at all. It reminds me a lot of a more forgiving MAC in Ruby Woo. The dry down is matte, but not that super-drying finish we all know and love (or hate). I don’t know why it looks so vinyl-y in the bottle, because it really quickly becomes this soft, flat color on your lips. “I have never said this before, but I need Rihanna to step it up. Only because this lipstick is fantastic, and I want it in every color. The applicator is almost a deer hoof, but a little flatter on the end and delivers a really crisp edge. The color is magnificent, and the finish is visually a true, true matte—totally flat and smooth—but it feels like a satin-finish lipstick or even a tinted balm. Also, it makes my teeth look like I’m paid to promote tooth-whitening products, so yeah, I’m in love.” —Amber Rambharose, beauty editor

“Because I’m so pale, a lot of times I’ll think I like a red, but when I put it on it’s too dark. I love this color, though!
