I think it’s safe to say that Cole Sprouse and Lili Reinhart are dating. The two Riverdale stars kept their rumored relationship tight-lipped for months, but after making their red-carpet debut at this year’s Met Gala, they’ve been more relaxed when it comes to talking and posting about each other on social media. If you want proof of this, look no further than Sprouse’s birthday message to Reinhart (she turns 22 today), which features a topless photo of her.
“Both the birthday and the gift. My little muse, happy birthday my love,” Sprouse wrote in an Instagram caption on Thursday (September 13). Alongside it is a grainy photo of Reinhart staring into a mirror. Check out the post for yourself, below:
Reinhart posted an equally-as-sweet post for Sprouse on August 4 (his birthday). “It seems as if the world would still be a stranger to me, if not for you. I’m so thankful that our paths intertwined to form this beautiful adventure~Happy birthday, my love,” she wrote on Instagram, adding a photo of Sprouse in a white tank top and shorts.
News that Reinhart and Sprouse were an item first broke last summer, but neither commented on it for the longest time. In fact, Reinhart wrote a Tumblr post last October criticizing the way fans and the media pick apart her personal life.
“It’s horrifying how invested some people are in my love life. Emphasis on ‘my.’ It is mine. It is private,” she wrote. “If a stranger’s love life is causing you anger, frustration or anxiety…please reevaluate your priorities.”
If anything, it seems the two of them are no longer afraid to share their affection for one another. Happy birthday, Lili!
Lili Reinhart is sitting in a Victorian garden in Irvington, New York. The birds are chirping, and the sun is shining on her blond hair. It’s a scene that makes it laughably easy to conflate real-life Lili with her onscreen alter ego, Riverdale’s perennial “good girl,” Betty Cooper. But the actress wants to make something clear: You may feel you know Betty—but you don’t know Lili. “I’m a very open book about a lot of things,” Reinhart says, “but at the end of the day, if I don’t know you, you’re a stranger.”
Riverdale, for the uninitiated, is the CW’s noir, modern-day adaptation of the midcentury Archie Comics universe. Betty still has her uniform of saccharine colors and a perky ponytail, but this version has a lot more agency. No more fighting with Veronica over Archie’s attention—Reinhart’s Betty is too busy catching serial killers.
It’s Reinhart’s first major role, and it catapulted the 22-year-old Cleveland native to Hollywood next-gen status with a passionate teenage fan base. She’s recognized as Betty everywhere she goes: in Vancouver, where Riverdale films; in North Carolina, visiting her parents; and at difficult, private moments, like a memorial service with her family in Massachusetts. And most encounters share one element. “It’s never like, ‘Are you that person from Riverdale?’” she says. “It’s ‘I know who you are.’ ”
Hold the Labels“I started off the show thinking I have a very romantic, flowy, feminine style,” Reinhart says.“But now sometimes I’ll surprise myself by wearing something completely different and edgy.”Nina Ricci turtleneck,$990. Smythe shorts,$395. Sarah Chloe ring(worn throughout), $118.
There’s a reason her fans (more than 13 million followers on Instagram and Twitter combined) feel they know her. She’s been outspoken on various platforms about deeply personal topics like mental health (she’s battled depression and social anxiety since she was a teen), body image (when Internet trolls suggested she was pregnant, for example, she hit back with a succinct reply: “This is just my body…sometimes I’m bloated”), and #MeToo (Reinhart wrote a Tumblr post about her own experience with sexual harassment).
She even goes there on the issue that’s the hardest for her: her skin. “I cried last night to my mom over FaceTime because of how ugly I felt I looked,” Reinhart says. “My skin has caused me a lot of anxiety and sadness.” Just one zit can ruin an entire day, she says. “I have a specific type of body dysmorphia that stems from acne. I see any acne on my face as an obsessive thing. [It’s] the only thing I can think about, and it makes me want to hide.” Opening up about the insecurities that gnaw at her has helped her find new avenues of support. “Lorde actually messaged me on Instagram when I had spoken out about my acne,” she says, “and she was like, ‘Girl, I feel you. I’m totally on the same page as you.’ It was really comforting and very sweet of her.”
More Than Meets the Eye Reinhart says it’s time to let Betty Cooper out of her box: “She’s not as innocent as the pink sweaters and Peter Pan collars make her out to be.”Dondup cardigan. But like any young woman navigating social media, Reinhart is trying to find where to draw the line. She likes being open but needs to have some boundaries. “I haven’t really shown the super vulnerable side of myself to my audience,” she says. “If I did that, I wouldn’t have anything left for myself.” So she goes deep only on the issues she feels comfortable sharing. “I talk about my mental health. I talk about depression. But I’m private about the things that I want to be private about.” (Such as her rumored relationship with costar Cole Sprouse. She’s hinted that they’re close—in a recent Instagram post she called Sprouse “my love”—but neither has confirmed they’re a couple.)
And she’s trying to find a way to cope with something largely out of her control: covert photos by fans and paparazzi. “It’s only been two years that I’ve been semi in the spotlight, and it still pisses me off so bad when I see someone trying to sneak a photo of me,” she says. The idea that she can be photographed whenever, wherever, makes her feel “like a zoo animal.” But she doesn’t let it take over her life. “Sometimes I feel like I look like shit. Sometimes I don’t want to talk to anyone. And it’s like, I’m allowed to have those days,” she says. “I’m not going to apologize for that.”
What a Girl Wants“If people could just open their eyes a little bit and see that there’s a much wider range of beauty and shape and weight,” Reinhart says, “there’d be so much more happiness.”Frame sweater, $395
In other words, women are multifaceted. They can share things and keep secrets. They have good days and bad days, and more important, they shouldn’t be labeled or put in a box. Not even Betty Cooper. For Riverdale’s first two seasons, Reinhart’s Betty alternated between a studious do-gooder and a Dark Betty hell-bent on revenge, complete with a black wig and lingerie. “It’s such a strange concept, the whole Dark Betty thing,” she says. If having complicated feelings is “dark,” she says, “[I’d] be Dark Lili all the time.”
In Riverdale’s third season, which premieres on October 10, Reinhart is optimistic that Betty’s two sides will finally unite in a single, nuanced character. “I think she’s not as innocent as the pink sweaters and Peter Pan collars make her out to be,” she says. “She’s evolving into a woman. She has a darker side and she has a lighter side, but they’re not split into two personas. It’s not that crazy for people to have dark sides. Everyone has a dark side.”
As she smiles for the camera in this sunny garden, Reinhart talks about an upcoming, much-needed trip with her family—people she can be her whole self with. It’s days like this, when the weather is nice and the work fulfilling, that all the self-doubts fade into a background haze rather than claim center stage.“It’s just a reminder to myself that there are bigger things happening here,” Reinhart says. Like sticking to her mission of changing the conversation around acne, body image, and mental health. “If people could just open their eyes a little bit and see there’s a wider range of beauty,” she says, “there’d be so much more happiness.”

Who doesn’t love a good Instagram meme account? It’s not just us—celebs apparently get a kick from them too. That extends to a certain Riverdale star, Camila Mendes, who by light of a very telling comment buried in the comments section of a @mytherapistsays post, might have just confirmed that her fellow co-stars, Lili Reinhart and Cole Sprouse are dating.
If you haven’t kept up on the Reinhart-Sprouse off-screen saga, which, TBH, is just as mysterious as Riverdale itself: All signs point to them dating—some heartfelt birthday posts, flirty Instagram banter, and globe-trotting vacations—for several months now, though neither half of the couple has confirmed it.
That hasn’t stopped their co-stars from joining in the fun of the are-they or aren’t-they reports. Remember KJ Apa photobombing their adorable picture at the Teen Choice Awards last weekend? And when Apa’s on-screen girlfriend Mendes came across a “when you third wheel so much you basically become part of the relationship,” meme, it seems like she couldn’t resist tagging her Riverdale besties. A lot of us can probably relate to that third wheel situation, and the eagle-eyed pros over at @commentsbycelebs spotted Mendes chiming in on Friday with a hard same. “@lilireinhart @colesprouse we’re such a cute couple,” she commented on the meme that featured a scene from Ghost.
Cute, right? We kind of wish we were third-wheeling on the adventures of these two ourselves. As for her comment: It could confirm everything or it could confirm nothing—Reinhart and Sprouse could just be super-close platonically. But until one of them says for sure, we’ll just have to keep our eyes out for confirmation of their status.
It’s only been a week since Lili Reinhart and Cole Sprouse seemingly made their long-rumored relationship Instagram official, but Sprouse is already taking his digital flirting up a notch. On Tuesday (August 14), after Reinhart uploaded a few photos from her recent cover shoot with L’Officiel Netherlands on Instagram, her Riverdale co-star slid into the comments section to leave a hilariously thirsty message.
As celebrity watchdog account Comments By Celebs dutifully immortalized via screenshot, Sprouse’s flirting was of the vintage variety. “A/s/l?” he wrote, using the abbreviation for age/sex/location that was popular in late-’90s and early-2000s chat rooms.

Reinhart has commented on Sprouse’s photos before, too, but they’re typically more straight-forward. “Damn that’s good,” she wrote on one of his latest artsy shots. She also posted a smiley emoji on his recent announcement that he’d be sharing more of his private, “sentimental photos” with followers.
Earlier this month, Sprouse and Reinhart seemingly confirmed their relationship on Instagram. In honor of Sprouse’s 26th birthday, Reinhart uploaded a photo of him, alongside a caption that seemed to carry more weight than usual. “I’m so thankful that our paths intertwined to form this beautiful adventure~ Happy birthday, my love,” she wrote. And though you can definitely “love” a platonic friend, this certainly didn’t stop fans from declaring Reinhart and Sprouse are Instagram official. Whether or not that’s actually true, however, is still up for debate. Lili Reinhart and Cole Sprouse’s relationship status is still truthfully a mystery, even with all these receipts.
Riverdale co-stars Lili Reinhart and Cole Sprouse have a relationship as mysterious as their show’s twists and turns—and while it’s not for us to ask them to label it, rumors have swirled around them for months. Recently, they shared experienced July’s magical blood moon together. And a few months ago, they attended the Met Gala together, a debut fans interpreted as an indication of certain couple-status. Still, neither has spoken publicly about their personal life.
Until, as many think, Friday, when Reinhart posted an Instagram of Sprouse that involved the words “my love.”
“It seems as if the world would still be a stranger to me, if not for you. I’m so thankful that our paths intertwined to form this beautiful adventure~ Happy birthday, my love,” Reinhart captioned a picture of Sprouse in a gorgeous location.
Fans promptly freaked out. A selection of comments includes:
“can i like a photo 1000x bc wow. i cry. “my love” ?❤️”
“the whole riverdale fandom has officially died bc there [sic] dreams came true and cole and lili are an actual thing which we always knew was gonna happen??”
“Oh my god I’m crying again?????❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ you two are such precious gems???????????”
“OMGG @csandogirl they’re a thing wooo hooo”
“ohh my god this is too cute?❤️”
“AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHGHHHGGH”
The couple’s Riverdale co-stars also chimed in, with Madelaine Petsch writing “F U C K this is cute” (fair) and Vanessa Morgan writing, “?❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️i love you guys”
As people gathered across the country to watch the once-in-a-century Blood Moon lunar eclipse on Frida night, one duo seemed to enjoy it the most of all: Riverdale stars Cole Sprouse and Lili Reinhart. Although there was nothing spooky, per se, about this utter astronomical delight, let it be known that Reinhart and Sprouse were ready for anything and everything, up to and including the end of the world (hey, better safe than sorry).
The costars and rumored couple hung out during the eclipse in Cole’s trailer on the set of Riverdale, and chronicled every last detail of their time together waiting for the moon on Instagram Stories. Or, shall we say, Reinhart (hilariously) chronicled every last detail of their blood-moon-observation sesh.
Reinhart was dedicated to showing her followers a total behind-the-scenes look at their moon-watching, starting off with a photo of them sitting together. “If the world really is gonna end tonight then I’m happy it’s with my best bud,” she captioned the photo.
She followed it up with. “Trying to squeeze in some great conversation on our last night on this planet — am I right Cole? Lolol. #bffs.”
“Asked him to tell me all the things he loves about me,” she captioned the next story. “He’s been silent for 30 minutes. Awww he must be thinking really deeply.”
The good-natured sarcasm continued with a Purge reference, followed by Reinhart trying to hang when Sprouse was decidedly doing his own thing. (Hey, it happens.)
Eventually, Sprouse “kicked [Reinhart] out” of the trailer. “Probs cuz he doesn’t want me to see him cry over the fact that the world is ending and he will miss me so much,” Reinhart wrote, adding three red hearts.
