Here Are the Top Halloween Costumes for 2019, According to the Internet

October 31 is a little more than a month away, but we might already have a sense as what the top pop-culture Halloween costumes for 2019 are.

The global fashion search platform Lyst released its annual report predicting what the most popular Halloween costumes are for the year, based on online shopping behavior, social media mentions, and engagement statistics. There are celebrities, viral sensations, and, yes, politics. Ahead, we break down the 10 biggest trends topping this year’s list.

According to Lyst, there has been a 70% uptick in searches for “the Squad Congresswoman” in the U.S. since the beginning of September. The “Squad,” of course, refers to Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, lhan Omar, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rashida Tlaib, and Ayanna Pressley. (But let’s all just remember to be culturally sensitive, please.) Over in the UK, with a Brexit deadline looming, page views on clothing, shoes and bags featuring the British flag have increased by 138% since this time last year.

It should not be surprising to see Lizzo on this list, seeing as pretty much nobody in music had a bigger year. In the 24 hours after her performance at the VMAs, there was 717% increase in social media mentions for the singer, Lyst reports. Obviously, you need to bring a flute.

Marianne Williamson’s Debate Performance Divides the Internet

Tuesday’s Democratic debates allowed leading candidates—including Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren—to go head-to-head on health care, climate change, and more. While outlets declared Warren and Sanders the standouts, self-help guru Marianne Williamson became the surprise focal point of conversations online.

During her last debate performance, whatever attention Williamson got was attributed to her, uh, eccentric answers on serious political matters. (At one point, she referred to New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern as “girlfriend.”) However, her second appearance won her some actual, legitimate praise. Last night she referred to Trump as a “dark psychic force.” She also made a cogent, passionate argument for reparations in black communities for the crimes of slavery. Slate called Williamson’s take “the clearest—and best—answer” on the topic.

“Well, first of all, it’s not $500 billion in financial assistance. It’s a $200 to $500 billion payment of a debt that is owed,” she began in her response last night. Then she launched into some of the numbers behind “the economic gap between blacks and whites in America” that comes “from a great injustice that has never been dealt with.”

“That great injustice has to do with the fact there were 250 years of slavery followed by another 100 years of domestic terrorism. What makes me qualified to say $200 to $500 billion? I’ll tell you what makes me qualified. If you did the math of the 40 acres and a mule, given that there were 4 to 5 million slaves at the end of the Civil War—they were all promised 40 acres and a mule for a family of four. If you did the math today, it would be trillions of dollars. And I believe that anything less than $100 billion is an insult, and I believe that $200 to $500 billion is politically feasible today, because so many Americans realize there is an injustice that continues to form a toxicity underneath the surface,” she said.

Online, people applauded her directness. By Wednesday morning, media reported that she had been the most-searched candidate during the broadcast. Memes piled up on Twitter, casting her as a peaceful left-field force. Others simply pointed out that she had a good showing.

“Marianne Williamson & Beto for Reparations. She gets another huge applause. I know people might not like hearing it, but Williamson is having a good night. Doesn’t mean she’s a good candidate, just saying she’s having good night. She seems comfortable and confident,” one person tweeted.

However, despite her performance, some social media users urged new fans to take note of Williamson’s damaging comments in the past about vaccines and mental health. (She once said antidepressants were overprescribed for issues of “normal human despair” and backtracked after “misspeaking” about what she had said were “draconian” vaccines.)

Macy's Pulls 'Mom Jeans' Plates After Internet Outrage

You may have seen a controversial plate making the internet rounds this week: a recent tweet from comedian Alie Ward spotlighted a dish with a design that features three concentric circles: the smallest is labeled “skinny jeans;” the middle, “favorite jeans;” and the largest, “mom jeans.” Macy’s is hardly the first retailer to sell something as clueless as portion control plates—Google the phrase and you’ll get about 125,000,000 results—but this version is very, very stupid. Especially for a mom jeans-loving mom.

The implication of the design appears to be “lol, moms all let themselves go and eat way too much! Disgusting! Don’t be like them! Keep your food fitting inside the very tiny circle in the center of the plate and you’ll never have to wear mom jeans!” Aside from the frankly concerning disordered-eating messaging that these plates encourage with their attempt at portion control, these plates also don’t make any real health sense. The amount of space a food takes up on your plate means, absolutely nothing. Having a cauliflower steak for dinner? According to this plate, you’re doomed! Stacked your tiny cheese cubes into a Jenga tower? Congrats on your well-balanced meal.

But the most offensive thing about this plate is the implication that being the owner of “mom jeans” is something shameful. Or that all “mom jeans” are being worn by people—presumably moms—who are not, I guess, taking care of themselves? Who are daring to stuff their mom bodies into jeans? As a mom myself, it’s offensive and also almost laughable.

Honestly, these plates are so bafflingly off-base that I don’t really know what the designer thought mom jeans even were. My favorite “mom jeans” are high-waisted and difficult to sit for long periods in. I would definitely take them off if I was going to eat a big dinner, not put them on—which I would do whenever I wanted to, because a plate is not telling me what to do!

Alex Morgan Lit Up the Internet with Her Tea-Sipping Celebration During the World Cup Semifinals

Soccer star Alex Morgan had a very happy 30th birthday yesterday (July 2).

Morgan and the U.S. Women’s National Team defeated England in their semifinal match and will move on to play the winner of today’s matchup between Sweden and the Netherlands on Sunday (July 7). During the 31st minute of the first half, Morgan scored a goal putting the U.S. ahead 2-1, which ended up being the final score.

But it was her epic celebration that still has everyone talking today. After her goal, Morgan headed toward the sideline and mimicked sipping a cup of tea, complete with an extended pinky finger. Of course, tea is basically the national beverage in the U.K., so the message was pretty clear.

I, for one, thought it was brilliant—as did many others on social media, where “tea” connotes much more than just a drink.

“THAT ONE PLAYER FROM ENGLAND DID THE GOGGLES AND ALEX MORGAN WAS LIKE “OH OKAY WE’RE TALKING SHIT NOW” AND THEN SCORED A GOAL AND TOOK A SIP OF TEA HAHAHAHAHAHAHA,” writer Shea Serrano tweeted. And the USWNT’s official Twitter handle got in on the action too, writing, “No. 13 on her birthday. In honor of those 13 colonies. That’s. The. Tea ?????? Go on, @alexmorgan13, what a birthday!”

Because it happened so close to Independence Day, the colonial and Boston Tea Party references were flying around, as well.

Of course, not everyone was as pleased. The USWNT has already been accused of being too “cocky,” which I find to be nonsense, especially as they keep backing it up with incredible play on the field. And as many have pointed out, would we be making such comments about a men’s team? Though some Brits had a good sense of humor about it. “Oh, come on @alexmorgan13 – if you’re going to troll us you could at least dunk a biscuit in that tea. #doitproperly,” one wrote.

Your Internet Boyfriend Is Obviously One of These 14 Guys

Your first crush is a rite of passage. The fixations that follow it are just life. Nervous, awkward, sublime. Disastrous. Transcendent. Here, we celebrate infatuations, obsessions, and passions in all their exquisite splendor. Meet our It’s Just a Little Crush series. Isn’t she divine?

Internet Boyfriend (n): A famous or semifamous male person whom your entire Twitter feed has a crush on at the same time. Often a newcomer who at least seems like a feminist. Arrived on the scene with a breakthrough project that made the world go, “?.” Can be in a relationship, despite Internet Boyfriend status. Can’t be married.

How to use it in a sentence: Noah Centineo is this week’s Internet Boyfriend, but I heard the star of that new Netflix rom-com has serious IB potential.

The advent of the Internet Boyfriend (circa 2008) has been explored at length elsewhere, and in truth there is no one definitive account. But what makes an Internet Boyfriend? That’s easier to assess. Because while Internet Boyfriends come in a wealth of looks, aesthetics, and levels of fame, true specimens do share several essential common traits. Of course, an Internet Boyfriend is lovable and charismatic, but so are tons of dudes.

The Internet Boyfriend takes it one step further: If he met your parents, he’d offer up a crumb crake that he’d baked himself—no questions asked. He doesn’t have some weird complex about splitting the check and will happily talk You fan theories with your friends. He’d never leave you on “read.”

At present, Noah Centineo is the Internet’s current BF. His performance in To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before made an entire generation of jaded Netflix users believe in romance. But 2018’s Internet Boyfriend can’t hold the top spot forever. With 2019 comes a new slate of men who look like they’d really love to meet your mom and saw this Maya Angelou quote on Instagram that reminded them of you.

Here we spotlight 13 of them.

UCLA Gymnast Katelyn Ohashi's Scores a Perfect 10 on Her Floor Routine and Wins the Internet

Over the weekend, the internet crowned a new viral star: UCLA gymnast Katelyn Ohashi.

On Sunday (January 13), the team’s official Twitter account posted a video of Ohashi’s incredibly energetic and fun floor routine—and now the video of the performance, which earned her a perfect 10 score, has been viewed over 16 million times. To use to the lingo of Marie Kondo, it definitely sparks joy. First, there’s Ohashi’s flawless execution of her tumbling passes and incredible splits. Then there’s her energy, her smile, and her dance moves to a stellar medley of songs that included “Proud Mary” by Tina Turner, “September” by Earth, Wind & Fire, “I Want You Back” by the Jackson 5, “Rhythm Nation” by Janet Jackson, and Michael Jackson’s “The Way You Make Me Feel.”

It’s all very goosebump-inducing. See for yourself. “A ? isn’t enough for this floor routine by @katelyn_ohashi. ?,” the team’s tweet said—and we absolutely agree. What really puts the entire video over the top is when you realize that Ohashi’s entire team is doing her routine on the sideline.

“Trueee?? squad and team goals?,” Ohashi tweeted.

This was only her second time competing with this particular floor routine after debuting it at UCLA’s first meet of the season on January 4. “I’ve never seen her perform like that,” Ohashi’s coach Valerie Kondos Field told the Los Angeles Times. “Ever, in your entire life. I’ve never seen her facial, her performance quality, be that professional, as I saw tonight.” That’s saying a lot considering Ohashi won the collegiate national title on the floor in 2018.

Along with a perfect score and helping secure a win for her team, Ohashi also has a lot of new fans—including Sen. Kamala Harris and Jemele Hill—among others who lit up Twitter with praise for her performance.

And if you’re in LA, you might want to check it out in person next time.
