This UCLA Gymnast’s All-Beyoncé Floor Routine Is Going Viral

Hello, people! It’s Friday, February 28, and there are only two things I care about today: Lady Gaga’s new song, “Stupid Love,” and UCLA gymnast Nia Dennis’s all-Beyoncé floor routine. I wrote all about the former here, so now I have the mental capacity to stan the latter. And let me tell you, my friends: I am stanning.

Of course, if you follow gymnastics at all, then you know all about Dennis’s brilliance. The UCLA junior is a star—she wrote her name in the air during a recent routine—but this Beyoncé moment takes things to another level. She mashed up several of Beyoncé’s classic instrumentals, including “Lose My Breath” (by Destiny’s Child) and “Crazy in Love.” Watch it for yourself, below, and be transformed.

According to espn.com, Dennis scored a 9.975 out of 10 on the routine, which was one of the highest-scoring numbers of the night. (UCLA played in a duel against Utah.) And get this: It all happened on her 21st birthday.

“I am overwhelmed with happiness and joy, thank you everyone for such positive messages, it means the world to me to have your support. This is so surreal i can’t even believe it! much love always,” Dennis posted to Twitter in response to the routine going viral.

Here are just a few reactions from people living for this moment:

“It’s you!!!! You’re incredible!!!! I seriously have never seen a better floor routine!! I’ve been watching them for 40+years. Your landings…I’m deceased. Amazing job!!” one person wrote.

“That was absolutely amazing! Just showed my kids and now they are jumping around the basement pretending to be you,” posted another.

Ultimately, UCLA lost the duel to Utah by a hair (198.075 to 198.025), but it’s clear Dennis was the winner of the night. You know Beyoncé is currently beaming with pride.

Yes, Jennifer Lopez Still Lets Loose on the Dance Floor

Just hearing what all Jennifer Lopez has going on right now will exhaust you. The multi-hyphenate performer recently began judging season three of World of Dance, which airs Sundays on NBC. She’s in the midst of planning her summer tour, It’s My Party: The Live Celebration. Oh, and she’s about to celebrate her 50th birthday. Throughout her nearly 30-year career in entertainment, every gig has something in common: an emphasis—and passion—for dance.

“The tour is going to be a very special moment in time,” Lopez tells Glamour. “It’s a big birthday for me, and I couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate it than with my fans dancing and singing every night for some 20-something shows.” (Tickets for the tour will go on sale some time in March.)

In this celebratory spirit, we asked Lopez 10 big questions about the world of dance (pun intended), and her answers shed more light on the pop icon we know and love. Check them out for yourself, below.

Is there a dance move you’ve seen on World of Dance that wowed you so much you want to learn it yourself?

There are so many [where I’m like], “I wish I could do that. I need to learn that.” I think just the style of hip-hop right now is what really fascinates me: How quick and fast they move and how isolated the movements are.

What are the best shoes to go dancing in?

For me, sneakers.

Do you prefer dancing on your own or with a partner?

I like dancing with someone, but on my own.

Do you have any sweat-proof makeup tips for people who want to go hard on the dance floor?

No, you just have to let the glisten happen. There’s no way to keep your makeup together—if you’re really dancing. There’s no way. Be sexy!

Is there a choreography breakdown in one of your videos you’re most proud of?

I kinda like all of them! It’s hard to pick just one. I’ve had a lot of dance breaks.

When was the last time you were able to let loose on a dance floor?

The Oscars.

What would you eat to fuel a long night of dancing?

I don’t really have a pre-game food. I don’t think you want to eat too much before you dance.

You’re getting ready before going out dancing. What music are you listening to?

We put on a lot of hip-hop when we’re getting ready.

What’s your favorite dance movie?

West Side Story.

Did you go to your high school prom and, if so, what did you wear? Yes, I went, and I wore a dress that I designed myself and had made by a local seamstress. It was a lace, halter dress with a fishtail at the bottom. It was hilarious.

UCLA Gymnast Katelyn Ohashi's Scores a Perfect 10 on Her Floor Routine and Wins the Internet

Over the weekend, the internet crowned a new viral star: UCLA gymnast Katelyn Ohashi.

On Sunday (January 13), the team’s official Twitter account posted a video of Ohashi’s incredibly energetic and fun floor routine—and now the video of the performance, which earned her a perfect 10 score, has been viewed over 16 million times. To use to the lingo of Marie Kondo, it definitely sparks joy. First, there’s Ohashi’s flawless execution of her tumbling passes and incredible splits. Then there’s her energy, her smile, and her dance moves to a stellar medley of songs that included “Proud Mary” by Tina Turner, “September” by Earth, Wind & Fire, “I Want You Back” by the Jackson 5, “Rhythm Nation” by Janet Jackson, and Michael Jackson’s “The Way You Make Me Feel.”

It’s all very goosebump-inducing. See for yourself. “A ? isn’t enough for this floor routine by @katelyn_ohashi. ?,” the team’s tweet said—and we absolutely agree. What really puts the entire video over the top is when you realize that Ohashi’s entire team is doing her routine on the sideline.

“Trueee?? squad and team goals?,” Ohashi tweeted.

This was only her second time competing with this particular floor routine after debuting it at UCLA’s first meet of the season on January 4. “I’ve never seen her perform like that,” Ohashi’s coach Valerie Kondos Field told the Los Angeles Times. “Ever, in your entire life. I’ve never seen her facial, her performance quality, be that professional, as I saw tonight.” That’s saying a lot considering Ohashi won the collegiate national title on the floor in 2018.

Along with a perfect score and helping secure a win for her team, Ohashi also has a lot of new fans—including Sen. Kamala Harris and Jemele Hill—among others who lit up Twitter with praise for her performance.

And if you’re in LA, you might want to check it out in person next time.

Thanks to Tammy Duckworth, Babies Are Now Allowed on the Senate Floor

Just 10 days after becoming the first Senator to give birth while in office, Tammy Duckworth made history again last night when she introduced a rule change that would allow children (like her newborn daughter Maile Pearl Bowlsbey) under one year of age on the Senate floor. Senators are also now allowed to breastfeed during votes if necessary, ensuring that they would not have to choose between caring for their child and doing their jobs.

In a statement thanking her colleagues, Duckworth said: “By ensuring that no Senator will be prevented from performing their constitutional responsibilities simply because they have a young child, the Senate is leading by example and sending the important message that working parents everywhere deserve family-friendly workplace policies. These policies aren’t just a women’s issue, they are a common-sense economic issue.” According to CNN, Duckworth had been working behind the scenes for some time on the matter and the last time additional floor privileges were granted was in 1977, allowing service dogs on the floor.

Though the change passed with unanimous consent, Senator Amy Klobacher (D—Minn.) told CNN, “It’s been quite a journey.” Apparently some lawmakers raised questions like whether diapers would be changed on the floor or whether there would be a dress code for babies. She continued, “The Senate is steeped in tradition and just like the rest of the country, sometimes things have to change.”

Dick Durbin, the senior Senator from Duckworth’s home state of Illinois said of the change, “I think it will do us good in the United States Senate, every once in a while to see a pacifier next to the antique ink wells on our desks.” He continued, “Perhaps the cry of a baby will shock the Senate at times into speaking out and even crying out on the issues that confront our nation and the world.”

Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee Took a Knee on the Floor of the House to Protest Donald Trump

PHOTO: Bill Clark/Getty Images

After Donald Trump spent the weekend insulting NFL players who protest racial injustice and police brutality by kneeling during the national anthem, anger and frustration over the President’s remarks rocketed throughout the country—even reaching the floors of Congress.

Yes, on Monday evening Texas Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee stood before the House of Representatives and criticized Trump for his recent comments. In case you missed it, the controversy started last Friday when Trump brought up the NFL player protests during a campaign rally in Alabama. ” “Wouldn’t you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say, ‘Get that son of a bitch off the field right now—out, he’s fired,” he told the crowd before spending the weekend (and well into Monday) tweeting about this issue.

“There is no basis in the First Amendment that says you cannot kneel on the national anthem or in front of the flag,” Jackson Lee said. “There is no regulation that says that these young men cannot stand against the dishonoring of their mothers by you calling them, ‘fire the son of a b,’ You tell me which of those children’s mothers are a son of a b. That is racism. You cannot deny it, you cannot run for it, and I kneel in honor of them.”

The Texas Democrat then dropped down on one knee to show solidarity with the NFL players—and forcefully reproach the President.

“I kneel in front of the flag and on this floor. I kneel in honor of the First Amendment,” Jackson Lee continued. “I kneel because the flag is a symbol for freedom. I kneel because I’m going to stand against racism. I kneel because I will stand with those young men, and I’ll stand with our soldiers, and I’ll stand with America because I kneel.”

Jackson Lee is not the only member of Congress to speak out against Trump’s recent outburst. Fellow Congressional Black Caucus member John Lewis (D-Ga.) shared a similar sentiment on Twitter, saying that the NFL players are following “a long tradition.”
