This Hidden Detail From the *This Is Us* Season 3 Premiere Will Wreck You


The This Is Us season three premiere was emotional for several reasons: There was that whole storyline with Deja’s birth father, not to mention Kate’s drama with the fertility doctor who didn’t want to treat her. The focal point of the episode, though, was probably Jack and Rebecca’s first date—which was absolutely abysmal. And that’s not because Jack only had $9 to spend on it, either. He literally didn’t talk to Rebecca the entire time and just stood there stoically, probably wishing he had a mustache. After getting caught in the rain—nightmare—Jack eventually drove Rebecca home, at which point he stared at her pensively and babbled on about his past. That, for whatever reason, inspired Rebecca to kiss him, and their date ended shortly after. How Rebecca had a good time that night is beyond me, but she did—and it kicked off the decades-old love story we now know all too well.

But there was a small detail from their first date that you probably missed. To understand its significance, let me take you back to a pivotal episode from season one: “The Pool.” You remember it: Child Kate is bullied by a group of girls at the neighborhood pool, prompting Jack to swoop in and make her feel better. He does this by giving her a green “magic” T-shirt, which he says makes “your enemies see you exactly as you want to be seen.” The shirt, interestingly, is what Jack says he wore on his first date with Rebecca. “I was wearing this shirt the night I met your mom,” he tells Child Kate. “And she thought I was the handsomest man in the world.”

Now, cut to Tuesday night’s episode. Look closely at the shirt Jack’s wearing underneath his plaid in the photo, below. It’s the same green one he gave Kate at the pool. Showrunner Dan Fogelman and company remembered! We love continuity! And, just like that, I’m crying all over again.

Blake Lively's 'A Simple Favor' Premiere Manicure Had a Hidden Message


The trailer for A Simple Favor is the best that martinis have looked since Mad Men. Starring Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick, the movie revolves around the very mysterious Emily (Lively), her unlikely friendship with Stephanie (Kendrick), and, going by the trailer, Emily’s deep devotion to drinking martinis and looking stylish. It seems like there’s a Gone Girl–type plot in there too, but from the movie’s promo materials, the martinis play a pretty significant role. And ever the supportive costar (and lover of a clever, hidden message ), Lively just showed up to New York’s A Simple Favor premiere with a tiny Swarovski crystal martini on her nails.

To create the miniature martini, Lively’s manicurist, celebrity nail artist Elle, says that she started by painting on two coats of LeChat Dare to Wear nail polish in Black Velvet ($6). She then topped the flat black color with a selection of Swarovski crystals (it wasn’t quite a J.Lo $100 mani situation, though—the jewels cost only $10). Elle says she was literally going to use magnifying glasses to help her create the martini, but they were lost at the last second, so she placed the crystals in three minutes with her naked eyes.

As for her inspiration, Elle says that after she saw martinis constantly popping up in the film’s press shots, she went for it. What’s more, “It doesn’t hurt that Ryan [Reynolds] just bought a gin company, which also plays a big part in the movie,” Elle says.

A tiny martini glass rendered in jewels may not be your definition of a subtle clue, but Elle says that there was actually more to the mani’s hidden message. She stuck to one martini accent nail on purpose: “This was all about her one special glass, which made it more symbolic of the movie. I won’t say too much more, or I’ll spoil the plot.” Interesting.

For the rest of her nails, Lively chose the gunmetal color of LeChat Dare to Wear polish in Rock the Mic ($7), since it uncannily matched the sheer, glittery black shirt she wore to the New York premiere. Elle says, “She’s been wearing suits as a nod to her character in the movie and for female empowerment as well. She’s standing up for there not being a difference for men and women—her suit was actually worn on the runway by a man.”

There Was a Hilarious Hidden Detail at Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's Second Royal Wedding Reception


It’s been exactly one week since the now-Duke and Duchess of Sussex tied the knot at their royal wedding in Windsor Chapel. And although it seemed like the entire world was watching what went down inside the church—Harry’s lip bite, Bishop Michael Curry’s epic sermon, the Kingdom Choir’s amazing “Stand By Me” rendition—the couple decided to make their evening wedding reception a highly private event for their nearest and dearest.

Guests at the reception, of which there were only around 200, were not allowed to bring their cell phones inside—understandably, details of the afterparty hosted by Prince Charles have remained pretty under wraps. But because this was undoubtedly where the real fun was had, we obviously want to know everything we can.

According to Vanity Fair, James Corden and Serena Williams allegedly played beer pong, and George Clooney, Kate Middleton, Meghan, and her mother Doria Ragland all took part in a dance-off competition. Prince William also apparently roasted his brother in his best man speech.

Now, a new detail has emerged, and it proves this couple has the best sense of humor. Meghan Markle’s close friend, Jania Gavankar, shared the hilarious way Meghan and Harry poked at their respective American and British nationalities during their reception.

According to the True Blood actress, each table at the reception at Frogmore House was named after a food that’s pronounced differently in the United States and in the United Kingdom.

“Potato, potato, tomato, tomato, oregano, oregano,” Gavankar told the magazine in a quote that doesn’t entirely translate well to print. “It was so sweet. There were so many nods to the beautiful mashup of two cultures.”

She also said the “family and chosen family” who were selected to attend the reception “danced until the wee hours. We partied and celebrated and ate sliders at 2 in the morning,” she said. “It was such a beautiful day and a carefree night, and it was a very powerful day in history. And I think everybody felt it across the world.”

The Sweet Hidden Detail in Meghan Markle's Wedding Veil


Meghan Markle, now officially the Duchess of Sussex (!!!), was a truly regal vision in her custom custom Givenchy Couture wedding gown, first-ever tiara, and light makeup at the Royal Wedding. But some of the most gorgeous, touching features of her bridal look are hidden in the details—specifically, in that almost 16-and-a-half-foot veil.

According to a statement from Kensington Palace, Marke wanted to have all of the U.K. Commonwealth countries with her “on her journey through the ceremony”—a tall order, but one Clare Waight Keller, the designer of her wedding dress, was able to execute. In order to represent the 53 Commonwealth countries, Waight Keller created a veil “representing the distinctive flora of each Commonwealth country united in one spectacular floral composition.”

The palace said that the team spent “significant time researching the flora” to create the veil, and that Keller oversaw the work to make sure each and every flower was unique. The veil itself is made from silk tulle, with flowers embroidered in silk and organza.

“Each flower was worked flat, in three dimensions to create a unique and delicate design,” according to the statement from the palace. “The workers spent hundreds of hours meticulously sewing and washing their hands 30 thirty minutes to keep the tulle and threads pristine.”

The representation of the Commonwealth countries isn’t only meaningful as a symbol of British rule—Prince Harry and Meghan will be focusing on the countries as part of their official duties as Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

On top of the flora from the 53 Commonwealth countries, the Givenchy team included “crops of wheat delicately [embroidereded] and [blended] into the flora, to symbolise love and charity” at the front of the veil, per Kensington Palace.

What’s more, Markle incorporated two of her personal favorite florals into the design: the wintersweet, which grows in front of Nottingham Cottage (where she and Harry live), and the California poppy, the state flower of Meghan’s birthplace of California.

The Hidden Message You Probably Missed in Blake Lively's Met Gala 2018 Outfit


Though it may have seemed as though Blake Lively flew solo at this year’s Met Gala, her family—husband Ryan Reynolds and daughters James and Ines—were with her in spirit. More specifically, she carried them with her: Lively had a Judith Leiber clutch custom-made with the Reynolds family crest.

If you look closely, you’ll see that Lively’s rhinestone-embellished handbag has intricate scenes depicted on either side. On the front, it’s classic “sacred heart” iconography behind a veiled woman, in keeping with the theme of this year’s Costume Institute exhibit, “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination”; on the other, there’s a riff on a medieval family crest, which, at the very center of a scroll, reads “Reynolds.”

The Reynolds crest is in the shape of a cross, and on each of the four points there’s a jewel with a letter in the middle: B, R, J, and I—the first initials of each member of the Reynolds-Lively family. Does this count as James and Ines’s first Met Gala appearance?

The clutch paired perfectly with the rest of Lively’s breathtaking ensemble: She wore a crimson Versace gown with a gold, richly embroidered bodice, bejeweled straps, and an extra-long train—all of which took more than 600 hours to create by hand. Besides the meaningful handbag, she accessorized with a golden, halo-esque headpiece, Christian Louboutin pumps, bright green earrings, and a stack of gold bracelets.

Reynolds attended the 2017 Met Gala in human, rather than bedazzled accessory form. Inside the event last year, he shared a sweet love note to his wife via the popular Humans of New York Instagram account: “She always responds with empathy. She meets anger with empathy. She meets hate with empathy. She’ll take the time to imagine what happened to a person when they were five or six years old. And she’s made me a more empathetic person.”
