13 Can't-Miss Movies and Shows Happening This Week


Sundays can be scary. The weekend is almost over, and the anticipation of what’s ahead over the next five days can be crippling. There’s even a cute phrase to describe this paranoia: the Sunday Scaries. And if you have them, don’t fret: There are so many good TV shows and movies to watch this week that will help you make it to Friday. Nothing makes the word week go by faster than knowing you have a new Netflix true-crime series to look forward to.

Sunday, January 21

24th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards : Kristen Bell hosts this annual awards show, which honors only actors—both from film and television. It will feature all-female presenters. 8 P.M. ET on TBS/TNT

“Proud” by Rita Ora: OK, so you can’t “watch” this, but you can listen. Ora just dropped this incredibly catchy song, with lyrics inspired by submissions from the Open Mic Project (a forum that encourages disenfranchised people to use their voices). Murder Is Forever: This new true-crime anthology series is based on James Patterson’s best-selling novel. In the first episode, a church-going couple’s tranquil existence is interrupted when a hitman shows up at their door. 10 P.M. ET on ID

The Alienist: A serial killer is on the loose in this gripping period thriller, starring Dakota Fanning and Luke Evans (a.k.a Gaston). 9 P.M. ET on TNT

Tuesday, January 23

Bellevue: This popular Canadian show, about a detective (Anna Paquin) who searches for a missing transgender teen, is finally coming to America. Clear space in your queue accordingly. 10 P.M. ET on WGN

We’ll Meet Again: In a press release (per People), the host of this feel-good documentary series, Ann Curry, said it’s about helping “people separated by conflict, war and humanitarian disasters find each other again and reveals untold stories of courage, survival, friendship and even love.” 8 P.M. Waco: This miniseries depicts the real events that happened in Waco, Texas in 1993, when the F.B.I seized the compound of a religious leader named David Koresh. 10 P.M. ET on Paramount

We’re officially in January, so you know what that means: It’s cold AF outside. Well, for most of us, anyway. There are some people who’re lucky enough to live in California or New Mexico and can laugh at the rest of us freezing our buts off. For most of us, though, this is a trying time. And there’s only one way to cope: Staying inside, bundling up, and watching these 13 TV shows and movies airing this week. Sweat pants—and a parka—are required.

Sunday, January 7

75th Annual Golden Globe Awards: This is the first major televised awards show of the year. Seth Meyers is hosting, and he’s already promised the show will be politically charged. In a post-Weinstein world, damn straight it better be. There’s a huge, necessary shift happening in Hollywood right now, so it’s fitting that awards season reflects that. Hopefully the Golden Globes sets the bar high. 8 P.M. ET on NBC

Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen: When you’re finished with the Globes, tune into the return of Cohen’s nightly dish-fest, which features the most delicious celebrity interviews and tea. 11 P.M. ET on Bravo

David Bowie: The Last Five Years: This documentary explores the last five years of Bowie’s life, in which he returned to the spotlight after a decade-long hiatus and produced some of his most important work to date. 8 P.M. ET on HBO

The Conjuring: This paint-by-numbers haunted-house film is elevated by truly bone-chilling performances from Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson, who play the real-life ghost-hunting duo Ed and Lorraine Warren. Available on Netflix today

America’s Next Top Model: Tyra Banks returns as the host of this long-running franchise, so brace yourself for maximum levels of smizing. 8 P.M. ET on VH1

17 Can't-Miss TV Shows and Movies Happening This Week


You’ve been waiting five months, but it’s finally here: The return of Riverdale. Yes, everyone’s low-key (but should be high-key) favorite TV show is back October 11, and things are looking scary…but also steamy. Um, that Archie-Veronica shower scene, anyone?

Actually, a slew of The CW’s hit shows return this week, including Supergirl, Jane the Virgin, and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. If you’re not a fan of these, though, there’s still plenty of good TV premiering to help you avoid social interaction. Mr. Robot is back, along with Madam Secretary and the BET Hip Hop Awards. Plus, the Dynasty reboot premieres Wednesday, and that bonkers-looking Netflix drama about serial killers (Mindhunters) hits your queue on Friday. And there are still nine TV shows and movies I haven’t even mentioned yet!

Sunday, October 8

Madam Secretary: The fourth season of Téa Leoni’s gripping political drama kicks off tonight. It’ll be interesting to see what Donald Trump shade, if any, makes it into this next chapter. 10 P.M. EST on CBS

The Collection: A period drama about fashion set in post-war Paris? Sign us up. Expect loads of opulent gowns. 10 P.M. EST on PBS

Monday, October 9

Valor: Valor stands out from the slew of military dramas on television because of its central female character, Nora (Christina Ochoa), who must help her platoon save two soldiers from a hostage situation. 9 P.M. EST on The CW

Supergirl: Mon-El’s pod is now in a wormhole; Rhea is dead; and Alex popped the question to Maggie. There’s a lot of drama going into this season-three premiere; we’re excited to see how it unfolds. 8 P.M. EST on The CW

Tuesday, October 10

BET Hip Hop Awards: Kendrick Lamar, DJ Khaled, and Cardi B lead the nominations for this awards show, which celebrates hip-hop’s best and brightest stars. 8 P.M. EST on BET

The Flash: With an energy storm rising and Barry (and Grant Gustin’s abs) out of the picture, tune in to see how Central City will get by without their scarlet speedster. 8 P.M. EST on The CW

Wednesday, October 11

Dynasty: Reboot culture is in full swing with Dynasty, which explores the tense dynamic between a rich twenty-something and her potentially gold-digging stepmom-to-be. Expect lots of cattiness and camp—but here’s hoping it’s not too reductive. 9 P.M. EST on The CW

Mr. Robot: Mobley and Trenton may have found a way to reverse some effects of the 5/9 hack—but with Dom getting closer to connecting the dots, Elliot bleeding out from his gunshot wound, and Tyrell back on the scene after a season in the shadows, the stakes have never been higher. 10 P.M. EST on USA

Riverdale: It’s back! The CW’s breakout hit from last fall returns for season two, and there’s a lot on the line. Is Archie’s father dead? Will Jughead’s move to the South Side affect his relationship with Betty? Will Cheryl Blossom receive the screen time and shine she deserves? TBH, that last question is the only one I care about. 8 P.M. EST on The CW

Thursday, October 12

I Love You, America: Sarah Silverman’s new variety show finds the comedian getting to the root of America’s issues via a series of field interviews with people across the country. Expect humor and, let’s be honest, awkwardness. Available on Hulu

Arrow: The sixth season of arguably the best piece of entertainment in the “Arrowverse” premieres tonight. Stephen Amell’s jawline, as always, takes center stage. 9 P.M. EST on The CW

Friday, October 13

On the Record: P!nk — Beautiful Trauma: P!nk talks motherhood, her career, and the future in this refreshingly candid music documentary, which is named after her next album. Available on Apple Music

The Babysitter: Growing up, did you ever wonder what your babysitter did after you fell asleep? This movie gives you the answer, and it’s terrifying. Tune in to watch Bella Thorne play a cheerleader who worships the devil. Available on Netflix
