Game of Thrones' Gwendoline Christie Put Herself Up for an Emmy Nomination—and Got It


Game of Thrones received a whopping 32 Emmy nominations for its final season—and the Internet can’t stop buzzing about one of them. Gwendoline Christie, who you know best as Brienne of Tarth, scored a nomination for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series, which isn’t much of a surprise. (I mean, her performance this season was brilliant.) What might surprise you, though, is learning that Christie submitted herself for the recognition—and got it.

Here’s why this is a big deal: Networks are generally the entities that submit actors for Emmy Awards. According to The Hollywood Reporter, HBO entered Kit Harington, Emilia Clarke, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Peter Dinklage, Lena Headey, Sophie Turner, and Maisie Williams for this year’s race—but it did not put forth Christie, Alfie Allen (Theon Greyjoy), or Carice van Houten (Melisandre), even though all three of those performers received nominations. They secured their spots by footing the $225 entry fee and submitting themselves into the race. THR says that it’s not uncommon for actors (or their teams) to do this, but it is atypical for those entries to result in actual nominations.

Christie celebrated her Emmy nomination by posting to Instagram, “CANT BELIEVE IT!!!!!!????!?!!?!!!!!!!!! THANK YOU UNIVERSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! #EmmyAwards #CANITTRULYBEREAL??????????”

Fans on Twitter are, naturally, living for this and using it as a prime example of advocating for yourself. “HBO didn’t submit Gwendoline Christie for an Emmy so she submitted herself and got a nomination. Be your own biggest cheerleader,” one person tweeted.

Emmy Nominations 2019: All Your Game of Thrones Faves Scored Nods


The Emmy nominations came out on Tuesday morning, July 16, and there were some exciting surprises. For one, Game of Thrones racked up a whopping 32 nods—including nominations for all your favorite actors. Yes, Emilia Clarke, Kit Harington, Sophie Turner, Maisie Williams, Gwendoline Christie, Alfie Allen, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, and Peter Dinklage were all nominated for their performances in the final season of Game of Thrones—which means this Emmys red carpet is going to be lit. If this cast isn’t going to come together for one last season in Winterfell, the least they can do is give us cute pics in their gowns and suits. Winter may not be coming, but iconic Maisie Williams-Sophie Turner red carpet moments certainly are.

There were also some major wins for diversity in the Emmy nominee pool. When They See Us, Ava DuVernay’s Netflix series about the Exonerated Five, received several nominations, including one for Outstanding Limited Series. Pose, another critical darling, also earned nods for Best Drama series and Best Actor (Billy Porter). And it’s no surprise that RuPaul’s Drag Race is present in the Outstanding Reality Competition series category. One disappointing aspect to Pose‘s nominations is that the show’s very talented transgender actors were shut out of the nominations. Hopefully the Academy rectifies that next year.

Female creatives were also present in the behind-the-scenes categories—particularly comedy writing, with Amy Poehler, Natasha Lyonne, Maya Erskine, Anna Konkle, and Phoebe Waller-Bridge all earning nods. (The comedy section in general is extremely female-focused, which is incredible.)

This Weatherman's On-Camera Rant About Fans of The Bachelorette Deserves an Emmy


A local weatherman in Ohio named Jamie Simpson was not having it with fans of The Bachelorette on Monday night after they complained about his emergency broadcast interrupting the show.

For context: Tornadoes have caused some serious damage to both Ohio and Indiana in recent days, and Simpson’s report was in service to those affected. But for some people, this still wasn’t a good enough reason to cut away from The Bachelorette.

“I was just checking social media, we have viewers complaining…No, we’re not going back to the show, folks! This is a dangerous situation, OK?” Simpson said on air. “Think about if this was your neighborhood. I’m sick and tired of people complaining about this. Our job here is to keep people safe and that is what we’re going to do. Some people complain that this is all about my ego—Stop. Just stop right now. It’s not. I’m done with you people! I really am. This is pathetic. This is a dangerous situation here.”

He eventually apologized to Bachelor Nation, though, saying, “Alright, I’m sorry I did that. It just really bothers me that we have people that don’t care about other people’s safety around here. That’s just ridiculous.”

Once the video went viral, Simpson continued to put the focus on what really matters: people’s safety. “To all the National media outlets wanting to talk to me,” he wrote on Twitter. “We had an EF-3/4 tornado last night, more severe possibly the next three days…let me do my job please.”

Simpson has a point, people. Yes, I know this week’s Bachelorette episode was important, with its labor simulations and everyone thirsting over Tyler C. But Americans are in danger! They need to know this information more than they need to know about Luke P. hearing God in the shower. Safety instructions trump literally everything, even a rose ceremony.

Even The Bachelorette herself, Hannah Brown, agrees. “Thanks Dayton, Ohio for the love, but be safe,” she wrote on Twitter. “Naders are no joke.”

“He’s ABSOLUTELY right,” one (very smart) person commented on YouTube. “One of the most historic nights in weather history in the area, and this man probably saved some lives with his report.” They took the words right out of my mouth.

Sandra Oh Brought Her Parents to the Emmy Awards, and Twitter Is Obsessed


Sandra Oh made Emmy history this year as the first Asian woman nominated as outstanding lead actor in a drama series, thanks to her role in BBC America’s Killing Eve. But it was her parents who stole the show at the ceremony on Monday night (September 17) when they accompanied their daughter on the red carpet.

Joon-soo and Young-nam Oh even joined the actress and Grey’s Anatomy alum in front of the cameras—most notably, to gush about Sandra during an interview with Variety. “I’m so proud of her,” Young-nam said before planting a kiss on her daughter’s cheek.

“Oh my God, that happened on film!” Sandra said in response.

People also noted that Mrs. Oh wore a hanbok, a Korean dress often worn at formal celebrations and ceremonies, to the Emmys. (Sandra actually wore a modern take on a hanbok to the SAG awards in 2008.) For many, Mrs. Oh’s dress was a proud moment of representation. Mr. Oh, meanwhile, looked dashing in his tux.

“Sandra Oh’s mother is wearing a hanbok and has done more for East Asian representation on television than all the broadcasts networks combined,” one Twitter user wrote. Writer and Sleepy Hollow showrunner Albert Kim tweeted, “Sandra Oh’s mom wore a hanbok to the Emmys! There is a hanbok at the Emmys! Throughout the night, the camera panned to Sandra’s parents sitting next to her, and they excitedly cheered her on as her category was announced. Sandra has received five Emmy nominations for her work on Grey’s Anatomy but never won, and many hoped this year would be her big moment. However, The Crown‘s Claire Foy ended up receiving the award. Still, we hope this means Sandra will continue getting recognized for her work—and bringing her parents to award shows, obviously.

This Chrissy Teigen Reaction Is Winning the 2018 Emmy Awards


Chrissy Teigen is the gift that keeps on giving: From her epic Twitter clapbacks to her drool-worthy recipes, Teigen consistently delivers full bellies and belly laughs. But place the supermodel/cookbook author/headband guru in the audience at any awards show, and a new level of hilarity ensues — thanks to her iconic facial expressions and animated reactions.

First, it was her awkward cry face that went viral after the 2015 Golden Globes. Then, her cringing reaction at the 2016 Oscars took over the Internet. And her latest reaction to make its way into meme history? Her response to the opening monologue at the 2018 Emmy Awards.

While co-hosts Michael Che and Colin Jost were delivering their opening monologue, Che cracked a joke about Laurie Metcalf’s Emmy nomination for the embattled Roseanne revival, which was canceled after its namesake Roseanne Barr sent a racist tweet.

“By the way, congratulations to Laurie Metcalf. Please,” Che said to the audience. “I mean, wow. That’s incredible. You know how great an actress you have to be to get nominated for Roseanne now? That’s like nominating a cop for a B.E.T. Award. Doesn’t happen. It would be weird.”

The quip earned laughs and applause from the audience, but the star reaction came from Teigen — who appeared to be trying to hide from the cameraman’s view. But seeing as the Emmys know Internet gold when they see it, the moment was captured and will live on via the following GIF:

Twitter is here for Teigen’s take on the monologue, providing more reactions to her shrug-and-dodge than to the joke itself. “Chrissy Teigen is a full-time GIF and a professional meme,” one user wrote. “The Queen of Memes strikes again,” another tweeted. But perhaps capturing everyone’s feelings is this particular tweet: “But when is Chrissy Teigen getting an award for Best Reaction?”

Black Actors Won All Four Guest Star Emmy Awards for the First Time


The 2018 Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony won’t be happening for another week, but four actors have already made history. They are Tiffany Haddish, Ron Cephas Jones, Samira Wiley, and Katt Williams, who swept the four guest actor categories during the Creative Arts Emmy Awards on Saturday. In addition to this being all four actors’ first Emmy wins, according to CNN, this marks the first time all four awards have been won by black actors.

The best guest actor and actress in a comedy series awards went to Katt Williams for his role as Uncle Willie in Atlanta and Tiffany Haddish for her Saturday Night Live episode last November, respectively, according to Complex. Meanwhile, the corresponding drama awards went to Samira Wiley for her performance as Moira in The Handmaid’s Tale and Ron Cephas Jones as William in This Is Us, according to Deadline.

“I’d like to thank my higher power because without her I wouldn’t be here,” Wiley said during her acceptance speech, according to Deadline. She also thanked her wife, Lauren Morelli, who “every day shows me what real passion is for your work and every hour gives me a reason to bring it,” and gave a shout-out to costar Elisabeth Moss, a.k.a. “the most amazing scene partner a girl could ask for.”

Meanwhile, Cephas Jones thanked his daughter, agent, and This Is Us cast in his acceptance speech, as well as This Is Us creator Dan Fogelman “for giving me the opportunity and being in the room where it happens,” per Deadline. “God bless my mother,” he added. “I know you’re looking down on me.” According to Deadline, backstage, he talked about researching the works of August Wilson and James Baldwin to inspire his performance as William, whom he described as a “flawed man with a checkered past.” “It would have been difficult,” he said when asked if a character like William could have existed “years ago,” according to Deadline. “We are moving forward and moving ahead.”

According to Deadline, neither Haddish nor Williams were present to pick up their awards.
