The Hair and Makeup Looks Everyone Will Be Talking About From the 2019 Golden Globes

Oh, red carpet glamour, we’ve missed you! After the annual lull that is the holidays, awards season finally arrived tonight to bring some glitz and great hair inspiration back to our feeds. We’re talking, of course, about the 2019 Golden Globes, which as the first major event of the awards circuit, always sets the tone for the upcoming hair and makeup looks we’ll be seeing between now and the Oscars. (You know your newfound obsession with hair bows? You can thank last year’s Golden Globes for reinvigorating their return.) If we’re being honest, in many ways, the Globes are our favorite red carpet of the year because they’re less uptight and formal. (Yup, it’s the show where everyone is allowed to drink.) What this usually means is that hair and makeup pros are more likely to push the envelope with the looks they create.

This year, we’re happy to report we had a few full-fledged yasss moments: Sandra Oh’s old-Hollywood curls, Chrissy Metz’s red lipstick, and Camila Belle’s lime green eyeshadow. Scroll on for all our favorite looks from the night. We’ll be adding to the list as more stars arrive.

Golden Globes 2019 Red Carpet Fashion Photos: See All Photos

Awards season is upon us once again, kicking off with the Golden Globes. It’s a red carpet that, historically, fashion fans always look forward to—incredible looks are pretty much the norm—but also one where some ensembles speak to the cultural conversation happening in the industry, whether it’s through a pin attached to a gown or jacket or via an all-black dress code. And for an event that celebrates a landmark year in entertainment, with films like Crazy Rich Asians and Black Panther setting new record after new record, this is certainly something viewers want to see addressed. This year, the Los Angeles Times reported ahead of the show that Time’s Up encouraged attendees to wear “TIMESUPx2” ribbons and bracelets, referencing the initiative’s second year and a newly-started campaign to double the number of women in leadership positions—in Hollywood and elsewhere.

Check out every single look from the 2019 Golden Globes red carpet, from host and nominee Sandra Oh to A Star Is Born‘s Lady Gaga.

Here's How to Stream the 2019 Golden Globes

The 2019 Golden Globes are shaping up to be an excellent time. Andy Samberg and Sandra Oh are hosting, which is literally a match made in heaven. Plus, so many of your favorite celebrities are expected to attend, including Lady Gaga, Emily Blunt, Janelle Monáe, and Gina Rodriguez. I’m personally waiting on the edge of my seat to see what Gaga wears—and if she busts out a surprise performance of “Hair Body Face.” (It’s one of the best songs from the A Star Is Born soundtrack, and no one is talking about it!)

People will certainly be talking about the Globes, though: Tonight’s ceremony is the true kickoff to awards season, and it’s arguably the most fun of them all. Maybe it’s because everyone’s seated at tables. Maybe it’s because we don’t waste time on boring categories. Maybe it’s because the celebrities can (and often do) drink. Who knows? Regardless, the Golden Globes are about to be everywhere, so you definitely need to watch.

Don’t have cable? No problem. There are still plenty of ways you can stream the Globes. Below, check out your options:

1. Sling TV or Hulu Live. You can access NBC from these platforms, which means you can watch the Globes.

2. The NBC website and NBC app. You will need a cable login for this, but let’s be real: You can probably borrow your friend’s (or friend’s mother’s). We’re not encouraging you to do that, but we’re not not encouraging you, either.

3. YouTube. Have access to YouTube TV? Then you can watch the Globes. Other services that offer access include DirecTV Now, Century Link Stream, and Fubo TV.

Happy watching! The red carpet for the Globes begins at 6 P.M. ET. Facebook Watch will be streaming it, as well as NBC.com and E! Online. The formal ceremony begins at 8 P.M. ET on NBC.

Gigi Hadid Celebrated Her "Golden Birthday" With Two Custom Golden Outfits

Gigi Hadid celebrated her “golden birthday”—that is, when the age you’re turning is the same number as the day of the month of your birth date—on Monday. She did so in incredible (and epic) company: sister Bella, fellow models Martha Hunt and Cara Delevingne, designer Prabal Gurung, and several members of the cast of Netflix’s Queer Eye. Believe it or not, the miles-long guest list and sparkler-filled Instagram stories weren’t the main attraction from last night’s bash: In true Hadid fashion, the now-23-year-old turned her party into an impeccable fashun moment, and one that paid homage to the “golden” occasion.

Hadid stayed on-theme with not one, but two glittery, golden outfits. (Hey, when it’s your “golden birthday,” you’ve got to go for it.)

First up, there was a Studio 54-esque fringe and sequin gold mini dress by Versace, which the model wore with Christian Louboutin pumps.

Here’s a closer look at her first shimmery golden look, graciously posted by Hadid’s stylist, Mimi Cuttrell.

Even her makeup—from her Maybelline eyeshadow to her nail polish—was gilded.

No celebrity birthday party would be complete without a full outfit change—and Hadid’s mid-fête clothing swap was nothing short of glamorous.

At some point in the evening, Hadid did what we all wish we could when we’re out way past our bedtimes: She put on sweats. But of course, these weren’t any ordinary sweats—we’re talking a custom white Juicy Couture tracksuit, embellished with gold crystal track stripes.

The tracksuit, which was specifically commissioned for Hadid’s birthday, featured 2,300 Swarovski crystals (and a bedazzled “23” on the back of the jacket).

If you’re feeling Hadid’s second party look, you can nab a similar tracksuit—if you’re willing to pay up, that is: Farfetch has customizable Juicy Couture sets, which can be embellished with Swarovski crystals at an additional cost.

Hadid set quite the high bar for “golden birthday” outfits—or, really any birthday looks from now on.

'SNL' Just Roasted E! Network's Coverage of the Golden Globes

SNL has been known to deliver comedic gold when it comes to crafting skits around zeitgeist-y political and cultural topics—and the episode that aired this weekend was no exception. Where it really shone, though, was when it came time for a skit about E! and what famously went down on the Golden Globes red carpet this past weekend.

ICYMI, E! has been in the headlines recently as a result of a wage gap between its male and female employees. The news first came to light at the end of last year, when longtime E! News host Catt Sadler announced she was abruptly leaving the network after learning that her colleague, male co-host Jason Kennedy, was making nearly double her own salary—despite the fact that the pair had begun working at the network at the same time and juggled comparable workloads.

SNL tends to turn its sharp wit on situations like this, so it naturally devoted one of its sketches to poking fun at the celebrity news network and the difference between the questions it was finally asking actresses on the red carpet and its usual coverage (more about work, less about their outfits). The result? Cringe-y (because these are the times we live in)—but also pretty hilarious.

The hilarious skit begins a Fashion Police-style program titled “The Look” dedicated to dissecting the Golden Globes red carpet (a clear reference to the network’s trademark awards show fashion coverage). But as soon as the male and female co-hosts start the segment, you know the skit is gearing up for an onslaught of gender inequality-based jabs.

It starts when a male and female cohost decide to proclaim their salaries in unison, only to discover—while on air—that the male anchor’s salary is significantly higher than the female anchor’s (a clear throw to Sadler’s recent departure). From there, the anchors attempt real-time commentary on red carpet looks—without actually commenting on anything being worn. “The times are changing and we’re trying to keep up,” Cecily Strong’s character says at one point. “I’m so out of breath.”

Watch the full clip and see the comedic genius in all its glory for yourself, below:

The Full Story Behind Connie Britton's 2018 Golden Globes 'Poverty Is Sexist' Sweater

Of all the black looks to walk down the red carpet at the 2018 Golden Globes, Connie Britton‘s was arguably the most statement-making.

As part of the Time’s Up-backed black-out, the actress wore a Max Mara ballgown skirt with a Lingua Franca sweater to the ceremony. As with all of the latter label’s signature knits, it was embroidered with a phrase across the front; Britton’s read: “Poverty is sexist.”

When images emerged on Twitter of Britton wearing the Lingua Franca sweater without context, many were confused by the sentiment. Go through Twitter, and you’ll find people wondering what she could’ve meant by it and whether it was just another slogan slapped onto a shirt. Then, when the style was attributed back to Lingua Franca (the embroidered script being pretty recognizable), some characterized it as contradictory or even hypocritical, as most of the brand’s products carry three-figure price tags. But a crucial detail was missing in the equation: “Poverty is sexist” is the name of one of ONE Campaign‘s gender equality initiatives, which Britton has been supporting for a while—and the sweater was made by Lingua Franca at the request of the organization.

“The phrase was inspired by ONE Campaigns ‘Poverty is sexist’ initiative, which aims to break down the barriers holding girls and women back as part of broader efforts to end extreme poverty,” Rachelle Hruska MacPherson, founder of Lingua Franca, tells Glamour over email. “We’re so honored and proud to be standing in solidarity with so many incredible women, both on the red carpet and everywhere.”

ONE Campaign requested that Lingua Franca make a sweater with the name of its campaign to give as a gift to Britton, she explains. The brand has received inquiries about recreating the sweater post-Globes (anyone can order a custom style via email), and will be donating $100 of each purchase (each sweater usually goes for around $380) to the Campaign for Female Education, “in support of their work ensuring women and girls get the education they deserve.”

The price tag was highly scrutinized in the aftermath of the Golden Globes. “The response [to Britton’s sweater] has been largely positive but we’ve definitely had some negative comments—more about the price than the actual saying,” Hruska says. However, as soon as there were detractors on social media, there were just as many folks responding to set the record straight on the brand’s ethical practices: Though the price can feel prohibitive to many, it’s due to Lingua Franca’s commitment to paying their workers fair wages, sourcing responsibly, and giving back to charitable causes. (Plus, Britton and Lingua Franca found supporters in Sally Kohn, the National Women’s Law Center, who backed up the sweater’s statement.)

“We never set out to make mass products for low- or mid-level pricing (fast fashion),” Hruska explains. “That’s just not us. We stitch everything by hand on luxury cashmere (sourced ethically, using clean energy and fair trade) and care deeply about paying all of our employees and our embroiderers (who all work locally in NYC) a living wage. We also care about our brand as a platform for creating dialogue and inspiring change, not selling tons of sweaters.”

Britton, too, went on the record to clear up any lingering questions about her Golden Globes look.

This won’t be the last time you see Lingua Franca involved with conversations of gender equality in Hollywood. The brand created two sweaters partnership with Time’s Up—a collaboration that actually came through Instagram. After posting a picture one of its knits with embroidery reading “Time’s Up” on its social channels, Hruska says that “Reese [Witherspoon] contacted me through a friend to request them for her executive team.” Lingua Franca then decided to produce them “as a fundraiser for the Time’s Up Legal Defense Fund, to which we donate $100 of each sale.”

The Lingua Franca x Time’s Up collection already has some pretty famous fans: Meryl Streep wore one the pieces on Ellen.

Not a bad endorsement.
