Kaitlynn Carter on How She Fell 'in Love' With Miley Cyrus

Kaitlynn Carter’s whirlwind relationship with Miley Cyrus was one the biggest entertainment news stories of the summer. The two women got together shortly after Cyrus announced her
separation from Liam Hemsworth. Cyrus is now dating Australian singer Cody Simpson, but not before she and Carter spent a few months in new-relationship bliss.

Now, Kaitlynn Carter is opening up about this experience in an essay for ELLE.com. In it, she reveals how and why she ended up falling in love with Cyrus.

Their romance kicked off during an August vacation in Italy, following Cyrus’s breakup from Hemsworth and Carter’s separation with husband Brody Jenner.

“Until that trip, it had never crossed my mind that I was even capable of loving a woman the way I loved her,” Carter writes in her piece. “But after reflecting on my romantic history, I realized that I’ve never really had a ‘type.'”

She later writes, “I fell just as hard for her as I had the older man so many years before. [Carter was linked to actor David Spade back in 2012.] It was that same familiar force of nature; I didn’t have to think about a thing or overanalyze. It just happened and it felt exactly right. Reflecting back on our three-year friendship, I realized I’d always been drawn to her in a way I wasn’t with other friends, but until that trip it had never crossed my mind to think of her in a romantic sense.”

She blames this partially on our culture’s obsession with putting people’s sexuality in boxes. “I guess technically I could label myself a number of ways. Or on second thought, not at all,” she writes. “Why are we so hellbent on defining each variation of sexuality, anyway? We’ve become a society of labels, even as we claim to be more open-minded than ever.”

Carter’s relationship with Cyrus strengthened her belief in rebuking labels. “While it was short-lived, I’ll remain eternally grateful to my most recent relationship for opening my eyes to this unexplored part of myself, and for inspiring a new level of self-discovery and wonder at all the possibilities of life,” she writes. “I’ve been forced to get to know myself in a far deeper way than ever before, and not just in terms of my sexual preferences. I’ve also been forced to reckon with who I am as a person.”

She adds that her experience with Cyrus was “so much more” than a “summer fling” or “same-sex affair” or any of the other unfair labels people put on it. “This was a profound journey of self-discovery,” she says. “For the first time, I listened to myself, forgot about the ‘norm’ and lived. I hope that everyone, when given the chance, takes the time to understand who exactly their most authentic selves are, untethered from what we may have been taught to believe.”

Miley Cyrus and Kaitlynn Carter Sent Brody Jenner a Joint Birthday Gift

Cyrus and Carter have been seen hanging out together in the wake of the singer’s split from her husband, Liam Hemsworth, including kissing during a trip to Italy. While all seems to be cool with Jenner, yesterday brought the news that Hemsworth has officially filed for divorce from Cyrus.

Jenner has previously spoken out to defend Carter after the photos of her kissing Cyrus went viral. “I feel the need to set the story straight. Kaitlynn and I have been best friends for 6 years, and we continue to be. We, like many others before us and many after us, grew in different directions over those same 6 years,” Jenner wrote in an Instagram post.

Hemsworth, meanwhile, has stayed mostly quiet. “Hi all. Just a quick note to say that Miley and I have recently separated and I wish her nothing but health and happiness going forward,” he posted on his Instagram on August 12. “This is a private matter and I have not made, nor will I be making, any comments to any journalists or media outlets. Any reported quotes attributed to me are false. Peace and Love.”

If One More Person Calls Miley Cyrus and Kaitlynn Carter ‘Gal Pals,’ I’m Gonna Scream

Hi, hello. It’s me, your Friendly Lesbian Media Overlord, checking in on the right way to talk about queer relationships—which, yes, apparently we still need. This week’s case: On Saturday it was announced that Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth are separating after less than a year of marriage. Soon after, photographs of Cyrus kissing The Hills star Kaitlynn Carter, who also recently ended her relationship with Brody Jenner, surfaced.

A source told People the women are “having fun” together while on vacation in Italy.

So okay, this may not be a long-term relationship—but that doesn’t stop me from cringing and going into a “gal pal” spiral when I see comments reducing their potential romance to two besties in need of “girl time” or a “fake” ploy to “mess with their two ex-husbands.”

Here’s what we’re not gonna do: We’re not going to say Cyrus (who has made it clear, multiple times, that she identifies as queer) “can’t be tamed,” call her a “wild child,” or conflate women who love women to feral animals. We’re not going to suggest that being queer is a rebound, a result of emotional trauma that leads to something as insane as trying on a sexual identity for size. We’re also not going to minimize queer female relationships the way we’ve historically done. (Yes, I’m available for hire in LGBTQ media sensitivity training, and I’m very expensive.)

What’s a “gal pal spiral,” you ask? Historically, headlines have dubbed women in same-sex relationships as “gal pals.” It’s reductive, as it insinuates that women who are close or openly involved sexually or romantically are just #BFFgoals. Cara Delevingne and Ashley Benson recently went through the “gal pal” cycle after the two were photographed wearing matching gold bands; reports claimed the women got matching “friendship rings,” despite the fact that Delevingne and Benson confirmed their relationship with an Instagram of themselves kissing labeled #PRIDE. Even after reports surfaced that they got married in Vegas, outlets countered it was only a “friendship ceremony.” Wow, I can’t wait to have a friendship ceremony and hook up with my platonic female partner on our friendshipmoon! Goals!

Delevingne was also gal pal-ed with Michelle Rodriguez when photos of the women kissing surfaced in 2014. Ireland Baldwin once kissed her “gal pal” Angel Haze. And never forget the time Kristen Stewart kept things “low-key in a denim jacket and skin-tight jeans as she steps out with live-in gal pal Alicia Cargile.” Live. In. Gal. Pal!

Here's What's Really Going on With Miley Cyrus and Kaitlynn Carter

Just hours after news of Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth’s breakup made headlines on Saturday night, August, 10, PDA-filled photos of the singer and newly-single Kaitlynn Carter started circulating the web. In the pics, the two are seen kissing on a boat during their vacation getaway in Lake Como, Italy, which prompted some to wonder if this new relationship has anything to do with Cyrus’ split with Hemsworth.

However, a source told People, the women met through mutual friends and are “just having fun” together.

Carter also announced her split from husband Brody Jenner two weeks ago, confirming the two “have decided to amicably separate,” adding that “they love and respect one another, and know that this is the best decision for their relationship moving forward.”

On Friday, August 9, Carter posted a pic with Cyrus captioning it, “rock the boat, don’t rock the boat baby.”

The model’s ex even commented on the photo, writing, “Hot girl summer,” which seems to suggest they’re on good terms.

She also shared another group shot on a boat.

And a video to her Instagram Stories.

Meanwhile, Cyrus’ older sister Brandi is also on the trip with them and has shared photos of them together.

The “Mother’s Daughter” hitmaker has been documenting her trip on social media, too, and recently shared a photo without her wedding ring, which is what initially sparked break-up rumors.

Cyrus’ rep later confirmed the news of her and Hemsworth’s separation after less than one year of marriage.

Vanessa Kirby Could Be Replaced by Helena Bonham Carter on 'The Crown'

The third season of The Crown promises to be especially bittersweet. On one hand, as the Netflix series jumps forward in time, we’ll have to say goodbye to the award-winning cast we’ve come to know and love, who will be replaced by an all-new set of actors so that the characters can age appropriately without the crew’s having to painstakingly apply any cosmetic or CGI magic to Claire Foy. On the other hand, the new cast is shaping up to be pretty excellent—and the casting news just keeps getting better.

British newspaper The Evening Standard reports that Helena Bonham Carter is “all but confirmed” to replace Vanessa Kirby as Queen Elizabeth II’s impulsive younger sister, Princess Margaret, in the new episodes. HBC, who is perhaps the perfect choice to follow in Kirby’s incredibly hard-to-follow footsteps, was reportedly previously considered for the role of the middle-aged QE2 before the powers that be decidedly (correctly) that she was a better fit for the clever, moody, and dramatic Princess Margaret.

The rumored casting decision is all the more auspicious in light of Bonham Carter’s own ties to the royal family. According to The Evening Standard, her Oxfordshire home, Mill House, was once the residence of Margaret’s lady-in-waiting Jane Stevens. Additionally, Bonham Carter previously played Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, in 2010’s The King’s Speech, which will undoubtedly serve her well if she really does play Elizabeth’s daughter on The Crown.

Only one member of the new cast has been officially confirmed so far: In what promises to be an equally spectacular casting choice, Olivia Colman is slated to replace Claire Foy as Queen Elizabeth II. Colman, who, like Bonham Carter, has also played the Queen Mother before (in 2012’s Hyde Park on Hudson), recently spoke about how thrilled she is to play the current monarch on the hit show. “I have remained ridiculously excited since [finding out],” she told the Radio Times. “I’m trying to be cool.”

In other casting “news,” Matt Smith recently proposed that Selena Gomez should play Meghan Markle on The Crown—despite the fact that Markle most likely won’t show up on the series until the fourth season or later. Hey, a (TV) prince can dream.

The Original Wonder Woman Lynda Carter Presents Patty Jenkins With Her Woman of the Year Award

On a night filled with countless wonderful women, we were lucky enough to be in the presence of two bonafide Wonder Women. At Monday night’s Women of the Year Awards, the O.G. Wonder Woman, the fabulous Lynda Carter, presented honoree and Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins with her award. Their friendship is actual squad goals (Justice League goals?), and Carter said of Jenkins, “She is a force to be reckoned with and she always has been.”

Carter added, “She got the essence of Wonder Woman because it lives inside her. She took the challenge of this miracle of an ideas and an iconic ’70s TV show and she made the ‘she’ become the ‘we’ on the big screen all over the world.”

In accepting her award, Jenkins acknowledged and thanked the loving, inspiring, and impactful Wonder Women in her own life. “No person’s an island,” she said, acknowledging what it means to have a Wonder Woman to look up to in 2017. Wonder Woman “stands for a new kind of hero who is strong and powerful and can fight the bad guy, but also believes in love and thoughtfulness.”

That sequel can’t come soon enough.
