Serena Williams Has the Most Epic Response to the French Open's Catsuit Ban


Serena Williams, greatest athlete of our time, has finally spoken about French Tennis Federation’s recently announced ban against the Nike catsuit she wore to compete in the French Open in May 2018.

Williams’ catsuit for the tournament, her first after giving birth to her daughter last year, had a specific purpose: It was engineered to prevent blood clots, which Williams had experienced during her pregnancy. The catsuit was also a hit with fans online, who called it her “superhero suit.” However, the French Tennis Federation’s president recently announced that outfits like Williams’ catsuit would “not be accepted” at the event beginning in 2019.

When asked at a recent press conference what she thought of the recent changes to the dress code, which targeted her catsuit as “too far,” ESPN reported that Williams had a legendary response.

“When it comes to fashion, you don’t want to be a repeat offender,” Williams deadpanned.

It sounded like Williams is taking the news in stride—and the ban won’t stop her from wearing clothes that address her health needs (while looking incredible) on the court. When asked how she would approach future outfits, she said that she’s “found other methods” to prevent the blood clots she experiences.

Williams also put any rumors of beef with the French Tennis Federation’s president to rest: “We have a great relationship,” she explained. “Everything’s fine, guys.”

Before Williams had shared her thoughts on the debacle, Nike came to her defense with a tweet of its own. “You can take the superhero out of her costume, but you can never take away her superpowers,” the brand tweeted on Saturday.

So, by the way, did tennis legend Billie Jean King. “The policing of women’s bodies must end,” she tweeted on Saturday. “The ‘respect’ that’s needed is for the exceptional talent ⁦@serenawilliams⁩ brings to the game. Criticizing what she wears to work is where the true disrespect lies.”

There you have it. Williams has served the last word—and we’re sure she’ll be hitting the court in even more epic attire soon.

Here's Your Epic First Look at the *Mulan* Live-Action Remake


The first pic from Disney’s upcoming live-action adaptation of Mulan is here. Released on Monday (August 13), it features Liu Yifei in character as Mulan, dressed in a red coat and brandishing a sword.

According to a press release, per ComicBook.com, production began this week, with the cast and crew filming in New Zealand and China. There’s also a release date, so mark your calendars: The live-action Mulan will land in theaters on March 27, 2020.

Directed by Niki Caro, Mulan will also star Donnie Yen, Jascon Scott Lee, Yoson An, Utkarsh Ambudkar, Ron Yuan, Tzi Ma, Rosalind Chao, Chen Pei-Pei, Nelson Lee, Chum Ehelepola, Gong Li, and Jet Li, according to the press release. As Teen Vogue previously reported, the new Mulan will depart somewhat from its source material. In addition to replacing Li Shang with a new love interest, Chen Honghui, played by Yoson An, the film will also feature a witch as a villain and a pair of con-artists.

Disney’s Mulan was first released in June 1998 and went on to gross over $300 million worldwide. The animated film has an impressive 86 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

“The budget and the location and the story is offering such scope to me for [an] incredible, muscular piece of girly martial arts extravaganza in China. And I can’t wait,” Caro told Screen Crush in March 2017 when asked about the Mulan remake.

Later that month, she clarified reports the Mulan remake wouldn’t include music. “The live-action is based on that inspirational Chinese ballad and on the animated Disney classic. We’re still exploring the role that music’s going to play in it, but for sure there will be music,” she said at the time.

Beyoncé Wore the Most Epic Dress in What Appears to Be a Vow Renewal Video with Jay-Z


There are five alarm bells going off somewhere, and that’s because Beyoncé and Jay-Z appeared to renew their vows in some new footage from the duo’s On the Run II Tour, the sequel to their 2014 tour together. Of course, being Queen B, she wore the most incredible, Victorian-chic dress to do it in. Consider us floored.

Bey and Jay Z’s new tour has already been the source of worthy news—from Beyoncé’s incredible tour fashion to a video that appeared to show home video footage of their new twins (alas, not the real twins, apparently.) During the tour, a certain video plays on the monitor that has led to some raised eyebrows. It features Beyoncé in a long, white dress—say, the kind a bride might wear to her wedding—and Jay-Z. The clip also includes the words “This is real love.”

Reps for Galia Lahav, the designer behind the bridal dress Beyoncé wears in the video, confirmed with Glamour.com on Saturday that she did wear the dress for the “vow renewal scene.”

Beyoncé’s incorporated home footage from her family life into her videos before, so the video has fans wondering whether they were bearing witness to a real-life vow renewal ceremony for the power couple. After all, Jay Z’s spoken publicly about marriage trouble—including allusions to his infidelity—before, as well as how they’ve worked through it and become stronger as a result. A vow renewal ceremony—and its incorporation into the video for a joint tour with the couple—would make total sense.

B’s dress is the “Thelma,” from Lahav’s “Victorian Affinity” collection, a bridal line designed with Queen Victoria’s 1840 wedding dress in mind. Lahav’s website describes it as “corseted with a sheer back made of a very delicate blush colored chantilly lace over a shimmery background.” It’s embellished with vintage-inspired appliques, Swarovski crystals, pearls, and full, tulle drape sleeves, and comes with a detachable bustle train.

Here Is the Epic Saga of How 'Brooklyn Nine-Nine' Was Cancelled and Then Resurrected


If you’ve been on Twitter lately, it probably seems like Brooklyn Nine-Nine is the only TV show in 2018. Literally everyone is tweeting their excitement about the series being picked up for a sixth season.

But the show’s future wasn’t supposed to be this bright. The comedy, which centers around the…adventures? hijinks? escapades? of a Brooklyn police precinct was beloved by fans who gravitated to any and all of its ingredients: a diverse cast with strong doses of LGBTQ+ representation, a heaping helping of humor, and, like most comedies these days, a boldness to comment on social issues.

Alas, it was cancelled on Thursday by Fox, and a once-quiet cult following went into an overdrive panic, creating viral hashtags like #ByeBye99 and #Renew99 to beg someone—anyone!—to pick it back up again. Below, please enjoy the saga of Brooklyn Nine-Nine‘s death and resurrection, told with extreme emotion by fans’ tweets. It’s a heartwarming reminder that sometimes good things do happen, even in 2018.

On Thursday, Fox announced that the show was cancelled.

Grieving fans began the #Renew99 hashtags, and turned out to Twitter in an outpouring of grief (and shade).

Many pointed out that in terms of representation, it was a rare bird in the TV landscape.

“#brooklyn99 is consistently funny, tackles current issues in complex, nuanced ways, has a cast that is MOSTLY people of color, has fully fleshed out characters, and one of the best coming out storylines in modern TV. It’s one of the few shows where I saw myself. #renew99,” one person wrote.

“You can’t talk about this show without talking about its cast. White leads were outnumbered. Two black men. Two Latina leads. Two queer mains. None of them stereotypes, all of them wonderful. A show that enthusiastically embraced kindness and was funny as HELL,” tweeted another.

“Brooklyn Nine Nine, Lucifer, and The Mick showed that Latinos are more than stereotypes. We are detectives, scientists, proud members of the LGBTQ community, funny as hell (especially the females!) and even directors,” echoed someone else.

People embraced the “anger” stage of grieving.

Even Luke Skywalker was crying.

People outright begged, making extremely valid points.

As the hours wore on, fans moved into the “bargaining” stage.

The show was bargaining too: Rumor had it it was looking for a home elsewhere, but Netflix and Hulu had both passed (Hulu, remember, picked up The Mindy Project after Fox canceled it). Netflix had reportedly passed because of a rights issue with Hulu. Rights, schmights, am I right?

But then, in the late hours of Friday night, news broke that NBC had listened to the Interwebz. They had picked it up for 13 more episodes.

Everyone freaked out.

One user pointed out an uncanny plot parallel.

The cast and crew of the show went wild.

A Woman Accidentally Texted Sarah Michelle Gellar Her Engagement News and Got an Epic Response


After her boyfriend recently popped the question, Georgia resident Charlyn Willis did what any newly engaged person does: She picked up her phone and told her family the good news. But in what she thought was a text to her sister, Willis ended up disclosing the announcement—and her engagement ring selfie, of course—to someone slightly outside of her inner circle: None other than Buffy actress and Cruel Intentions scene-stealer Sarah Michelle Gellar.

After receiving the text, Gellar responded in an epic (and unsurprisingly cool) way: by posting Willis’ photo to her own Instagram story and Facebook page asking followers to send well-wishes to the bride-to-be. “This is #CharlynWillis. She got engaged yesterday, and meant to text her sister, but in all the excitement, got me instead,” wrote Gellar on Facebook. “Please help me say congrats to Charlyn. (And her fiancé whose name I don’t know).”

If that’s not the most legendary way to tell the world that your fiancé put a ring on it, I don’t know what is. And apparently Willis thinks so too. “I guess the best way to announce your engagement is to have a celebrity do it for you,” she wrote in a Facebook post this weekend, later following up with: “Thank you Sarah…You’ve truly made my engagement experience even more of a life changer! Please know when we set a date, I’ll be reaching out to invite you, Freddie, and the kids! ????”

In the end, if Willis does end up inviting the Gellar/Prinze Jr. family, that’s going to be one hell of a wedding…thanks to one hell of a wrong number.

This Epic 'Riverdale' Theory Will Help You Understand That Confusing Black Hood Reveal


SPOILERS AHEAD!

Hello, and welcome to another edition of Riverdale Fan Theories, Particularly and Especially Those Having to Do With the Black Hood. During last week’s mid-season finale (see our recap, if you’re so inclined), we finally found out who it was. It was not Sheriff Keller. It was not Hiram Lodge. It was not Hal Cooper. It was also not Betty’s long-lost brother or Kevin or a mercenary for Archie’s mom, Mary Andrews, which pretty much leaves it to be a random character like a janitor. And, hey-oh, it turns out it was the janitor, Svenson. So that was disappointing—at first. Because as it turns out, it might not be him after all.

As some fans on Twitter pointed out, it is only the mid-season finale: Why would they expose the Black Hood and wrap a major plot line so early?

“There’s no way Svenson is the real Black Hood. My theory is, the REAL Black Hood wanted Svenson to die the same way his sin was made — by killing the wrong man,” proclaims user @iiClockworkii. “Also, this is only the mid season finale, it’s only halfway over. There’s no way.”

If you recall, Svenson was the sole survivor of the Riverdale Reaper murders. When a group of townspeople asked him who the Reaper was, he identified the wrong person—and that innocent guy was killed. It seems the same thing might be happening with Svenson. He was accused of being the Black Hood and was killed—but he might be innocent. Might be.

So next up is the excellent and very valid point raised by @mallorydui, who writes that the Black Hood is someone who wanted Svenson to experience what the innocent man whom Svenson wrongly blamed for a crime had to go through. Karma, y’all.

The “frame-Svenson” theory gained further ground on the Twitter as well…

…with some adding that Archie is the key to knowing who the Black Hood is—after all, he saw the Hood’s eyes the night his father was shot.

If these users are right—and in a show with this many twists and turns, we’re not putting a very weird fake-reveal behind the showrunners—fan theory season isn’t over yet. Which is great, because that’s kind of what we live for with this show.
