Halima Aden Appears in the 2019 ‘Sports Illustrated’ Swimsuit Issue Wearing a Burkini—and You Can Actually Buy It

Update, May 15, 2019:

The 2019 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue is a noteworthy one, for many reasons—it brought Tyra Banks out of modeling retirement, and it features Halima Aden as the first model to appear in modest swimwear on its pages. Two brands designed custom suits for Aden to wear on the shoot. And one of them, Cynthia Rowley, is actually putting the burkini it made for the model into production.

Rowley created a two-piece burkini swimsuit featuring long sleeves, hood, and skirted bottom, in one of her signature colorblock prints. And now it’s up on her e-commerce for anyone to preorder.

That wasn’t originally the plan, though.

“The burkini initially started as a one-of-a-kind, custom piece for Halima, but after seeing such a positive response to the editorial, we didn’t have to think twice about putting it into production,” Rowley tells Glamour. “Thinking of fashion with a global mind-set is important to us as a brand, and we saw this as yet another opportunity to cater to our customers while standing behind the powerful and inspirational message the SI Swimsuit Issue brought to the surface. We design our wetsuits to inspire women to try new things and hope the introduction of our burkini will extend this mind-set to women around the world.”

Set to ship on August 1, the Prism Colorblock Burkini runs in sizes XS through L and retails for $295.

The response to the Cynthia Rowley burkini has been strong, says Rowley: “We’ve already received tons of positive responses. We have lots of followers DM’ing us asking what’s next…. Stay tuned!”

Original story:

She’s only 21, but model Halima Aden has already been “the first” in many different ways: She was the first woman to wear a burkini in the Miss Minnesota USA pageant, the first hijab-wearing model to sign a contract with IMG, and now, the first model to appear in a burkini in Sports Illustrated‘s famous swimsuit issue.

On Monday, Sports Illustrated announced that Aden appears in its annual swim spread, twice. This marks the first time modest swimwear is represented in the issue.

In this shoot, Aden is photographed wearing a modest swimsuit by No Ka’Oi and a multicolor burkini by Cynthia Rowley. Aden’s pages were shot in Kenya, where she lived at a refugee camp before immigrating to the United States when she was 7.

Aden’s inclusion in the 2019 Swimsuit Issue is a major step for representation of modest fashion. “This feature is proving that a fully covered hijab wearing model can confidently stand alongside a beautiful woman in a revealing bikini and together they can celebrate one another, cheer each other on, and champion each other’s successes,” the model said in a statement. “Young Muslim women need to know that there is a modest swimsuit option available to them so they can join the swim team, participate in swim class at school, and go with their friends to the beach. Muslim girls should feel confident taking that step and doing so comfortably while wearing a burkini.”

SI Swimsuit has been at the forefront of changing the narrative and conversation on social issues and preconceived notions. I’m hoping this specific feature will open doors up for my Somali community, Muslim community, refugee community, and any other community that can relate to being different,”Aden continued.

In recent editions, the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue has worked to make its pages more inclusive. It began diversifying the sizes of the models it featured in 2015, when Ashley Graham became the first curve model to appear in it. Since then, Hunter McGrady and Veronica Pome’e have modeled for the magazine.

Rachel Brosnahan, Kate Spade's Niece, Appears in the Latest Frances Valentine Campaign

Kate Spade‘s fashion empire and legacy extends beyond her namesake brand to Frances Valentine, the second accessories line founded by the late designer. Today (January 30) Frances Valentine announced that it is paying tribute to its cofounder with a deeply personal, joyful campaign starring a special member of Spade’s family.

Frances Valentine tapped Rachel Brosnahan, Spade’s niece and star of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, to front a vibrant spring 2019 campaign honoring her aunt’s memory. Brosnahan appeared on the Today show alongside Frances Valentine CEO Elyce Arons to unveil the campaign and discuss her aunt’s lasting impact on fashion.

“When you lose someone you love very, very much, you spend a lot of time trying to think about how to keep their spirit alive,” Brosnahan said on Today. “In Katy’s case, there is so much of her left behind, and this was an opportunity for us to celebrate her life and her legacy and how much she meant not only to us, but to so many other people and the impact she’s had on the fashion industry.”

In the campaign, Brosnahan models Frances Valentine’s “modern vintage” bags and jewelry alongside outfits that are emblematic of her aunt’s well-known penchant for color. Pieces from the collection include leather bags in mustard yellow and red woven basket bags, oversize pendant earrings, and bow-adorned kitten heels.

“I have always loved Katy’s love of colors and accessories,” Brosnahan said in the brand’s look book. “She brightened up every room she walked into. She also loved classic shapes, but by mixing colors and patterns and adding funky accessories, her personality always shone through.”

When it was time to bring that personality to life in the new campaign, Arons told Glamour, Brosnahan was the perfect fit. “Asking Rachel to be in the campaign was very natural. She is part of Katy’s family and part of the Frances Valentine family,” she said. “It was very organic and easy. Rachel enthusiastically agreed to be in the spring campaign and we were over the moon.”

The campaign captures the sense of optimism and joy legions of shoppers found in Spade’s designs—and in the designer herself. “The spring FV collection reflects Katy’s love of color and modern shapes as well as her love of vintage prints,” Arons said. “Katy had a joyous nature and loved creating things that made people happy. [She] gave women permission to be themselves and to be original.”

Brosnahan remembers her aunt’s personality fondly and carries her memory into the campaign. “Katy led with an almost unparalleled kindness and generosity in both work and life, and firmly believed it was one of the keys to her success. She taught me a great deal about passion and drive but never at the expense of kindness,” she said. “She found joy in every corner of her life and work, and that’s something I will always carry with me.”

Brosnahan’s campaign follows special products that memorialize Kate Spade at Frances Valentine. Last fall the brand released the Kate bag, a boxy tote reminiscent of the Sam bag from Kate Spade New York, to honor its founder. At the time, Arons told Glamour that Frances Valentine would always be informed by Spade’s aesthetic. Spade, she said, “was someone who manifested her personality in every product, so there’s a lot of Katy in everything we do [at Frances Valentine].”

Now Spade lives on in her niece’s image. “Having Rachel as the face of the spring campaign would have made Katy smile,” says Arons.

Beyoncé Wore the Most Epic Dress in What Appears to Be a Vow Renewal Video with Jay-Z

There are five alarm bells going off somewhere, and that’s because Beyoncé and Jay-Z appeared to renew their vows in some new footage from the duo’s On the Run II Tour, the sequel to their 2014 tour together. Of course, being Queen B, she wore the most incredible, Victorian-chic dress to do it in. Consider us floored.

Bey and Jay Z’s new tour has already been the source of worthy news—from Beyoncé’s incredible tour fashion to a video that appeared to show home video footage of their new twins (alas, not the real twins, apparently.) During the tour, a certain video plays on the monitor that has led to some raised eyebrows. It features Beyoncé in a long, white dress—say, the kind a bride might wear to her wedding—and Jay-Z. The clip also includes the words “This is real love.”

Here’s the video from the Cardiff stop of their tour on June 6, where you can catch a glimpse of the scene—and Bey’s stunning dress:

Reps for Galia Lahav, the designer behind the bridal dress Beyoncé wears in the video, confirmed with Glamour.com on Saturday that she did wear the dress for the “vow renewal scene.”

Beyoncé’s incorporated home footage from her family life into her videos before, so the video has fans wondering whether they were bearing witness to a real-life vow renewal ceremony for the power couple. After all, Jay Z’s spoken publicly about marriage trouble—including allusions to his infidelity—before, as well as how they’ve worked through it and become stronger as a result. A vow renewal ceremony—and its incorporation into the video for a joint tour with the couple—would make total sense.

B’s dress is the “Thelma,” from Lahav’s “Victorian Affinity” collection, a bridal line designed with Queen Victoria’s 1840 wedding dress in mind. Lahav’s website describes it as “corseted with a sheer back made of a very delicate blush colored chantilly lace over a shimmery background.” It’s embellished with vintage-inspired appliques, Swarovski crystals, pearls, and full, tulle drape sleeves, and comes with a detachable bustle train.

Take a closer look at the dress, sans train, below:

And here’s the back (those sheer panels, tho):

Congrats to the apparently recently vow-renewed couple!
