It Sure Looks Like Meghan Markle Upgraded Her Engagement Ring With a Subtle Redesign

And here it is in January of this year, when she was on an official engagement—pre-pavé diamonds.

We know that Prince Harry originally designed the ring for Markle with a diamond from Botswana in the center and two smaller jewels from Princess Diana’s personal collection on either side. “The little diamonds on either side are from my mother’s jewelry collection to make sure that she’s with us on this crazy journey together,” he said during the couple’s first interview together after their engagement.

“I think everything about Harry’s thoughtfulness and the inclusion of [Diana’s stones] and, obviously, not being able to meet his mom—it’s so important to me to know that she’s a part of this with us,” Markle said at the time. “It’s incredibly special to be able to have this, which sort of links where [Harry comes] from and Botswana, which is important to us. It’s perfect.”

No word on what prompted the new design—but we love the subtle upgrade.

How to Clean Your Engagement or Wedding Ring at Home

We do a lot to our engagement rings—after all, they’re something that goes through each and every part of our day (every day!) with us. And it all has an effect: Everything from applying lotion to scrubbing dishes can dull the sparkle of engagement rings, causing an otherwise crystal-clear diamond or gemstone to appear cloudy.

“The reality is, if you wear your rings every day, you absolutely need to clean them,” says Ryan Elbaz, founder of Majesty Diamonds.

Keeping your ring clean, however, isn’t just about keeping it sparkly. You’re going to want to take a minute while you clean to make sure the ring’s still looking as perfect as the day you got it.

“[Cleaning] also gives you a way to inspect your ring on a regular basis,” explains Stephanie Maslow-Blackman, owner of Metalicious. When it’s sparkling, you’ll be better able to inspect its stones and prongs, looking for a loosening setting or chips in your stone’s surface. And if you do find something, you’ll be able to take it to your jeweler before it’s too late.

Our experts recommend cleaning your engagement ring every couple weeks—or more, if you’re wearing it during household chores and strenuous activities, such as outdoor sports. Simply put: “The more of this you do, the more often you should clean your ring,” says Elbaz. And no, there’s no such thing as cleaning it too much.

That being said, when you clean it, avoid using harsh chemicals (think bleach, chlorine, and acetone) and commercial silver and gold cleaners whenever possible. You don’t need to buy some super-fancy product to get the results you need: Our experts suggest good ol’ soap and warm water to get your ring shining again.

Fill a small bowl with warm water and a squeeze of dishwashing soap, then drop your ring into the dish for a 15-minute soak. “This will loosen any dirt, lotion, or dried soap that has settled into any crevices or behind your gemstone,” says Maslow-Blackman. Once it’s had its bath, take your ring out for a rinse: Run it under a steady stream of warm water—making sure your sink drain is stopped—and turn it around so the water can run over the top and bottom of the ring.

If you want a “slightly deeper, but still natural” clean, Vanessa Stofenmacher, co-founder and creative director of fine jewelry company Vrai & Oro, recommends soaking your engagement ring in witch hazel or white vinegar “for about five minutes.” (She uses half a cup of white vinegar, FYI.)

If you spot any lasting residue, take a soft-bristled or old toothbrush and gently scrub around the stone, taking care to hit the bottom, where the light shines through and really gives your gem its sparkle.

Jennifer Lawrence Just Opened Up About Her Engagement For the First Time

In February, news broke that Jennifer Lawrence and her boyfriend, art gallerist Cooke Maroney, were engaged. The only proof of this fans received at the time was a blurry photo of Lawrence wearing a ring on that finger. But now we have a soundbite confirming the happy news.

Lawrence gave a brief interview to Entertainment Tonight about the engagement this week at the Los Angeles premiere of Dark Phoenix. “Well, he’s just the best person I’ve ever met in my whole life,” Lawrence said about Maroney. “It was a very, very easy decision.”

Watch her explain this for yourself in the video, below:

This will probably be the only quote we get about Jennifer Lawrence and Cooke Maroney’s engagement for a while. The Red Sparrow actress has historically been quite tight-lipped about her personal life. According to Page Six, though, Lawrence was first spotted wearing her ring back in February at a dinner in New York City. “They seemed like they were celebrating and people were talking about [the engagement],” a source told the publication. “The ring was very noticeable. They were sitting back in a corner. She was wearing a cute black dress with white polka dots.”

The couple first started dating back in June 2018. Before this, Lawrence was in a brief relationship with her Mother! director Darren Aronofsky. Prior to that, she dated actor Nicholas Hoult from 2011 to 2014. Lawrence spoke about the latter relationship four years ago in an interview with Diane Sawyer, contextualizing it with the Hunger Games franchise ending.

“These movies had been my life for so long, and they had to come first in everything,” she said. “I was also in a relationship with somebody for five years and that was my life. So my life was this person and these movies, and we broke up around the same time that I wrapped those movies. Being 24 was this whole year of ‘Who am I without these movies? Who am I without this man?’”

No word yet on Maroney and Lawrence’s wedding date, but we’ll keep you posted.

Barack Obama Sent the Sweetest Engagement Note to Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez

After two years of dating, Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez are engaged. And although the blissfully Instagram-happy couple has plenty of fans who have followed the romance since it officially kicked off, it seems like their No. 1 fan is none other than former President Barack Obama.

Shortly after the pair announced their engagement on Instagram, the former POTUS sent the pair an adorable note congratulating the couple on their engagement. Naturally, Rodriguez shared the note on Friday after receiving it (come on, wouldn’t you?).

On his personal stationary, Obama wrote:

Jennifer and Alex –
Michelle and I just wanted to congratulate you on your engagement. After 26 years together, we can say that whatever challenges life may bring, sharing them with someone you love makes it all better.
All the best,
Barack Obama

In his social media post, which he shared to both Instagram and Twitter, Rodriguez shared a photo of the note and simply captioned it, “This means the world to us. #44”

As for how J.Lo and A-Rod know the Obamas, Vulture reports that Rodriguez likely first met the former President when he visited the White House back in 2010 with the rest of the Yankees. Lopez, on the other hand, recently shared the stage with Michelle Obama in February during the 2019 Grammys.

But it might just be that the Obamas are simply big fans of the couple just like the rest of us. After all, the Lopez-Rodriguez twosome are a couple who appear to be madly, deeply, truly in love—kind of like the Obamas themselves.

“Everything that we do, we do together,” Lopez recently shared with People in an in-depth interview last week about their relationship. “We’re constantly supporting each other in our individual endeavors and then we’re thinking about all the things that we can build together.” She added, “He knows my dreams and I know his dreams, and together we feel like we’re stronger. He is my biggest collaborator, and my biggest supporter.”

All the Details on Jennifer Lopez’s Engagement Ring From Alex Rodriguez

Over the weekend, Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez announced their engagement. The couple, who have been together for more than two years, shared the happy news on Instagram, via two coordinated posts of a ginormous diamond engagement ring. “She said yes,” Rodriguez captioned the announcement photo of Lopez wearing her shiny new emerald-cut stone.

Not only is the rock stunning, but it’s massive. (Though, to be honest, we didn’t expect anything less with these two.) Lopez’s diamond is an emerald cut—the same stone shape seen on the engagement rings of celebrities like Amal Clooney, Beyoncé, and Anne Hathaway. The Art Deco style has been cropping up again in recent years, both among the A-list crowd and regular-old shoppers.

A.Rod popped the question during a couple’s getaway in the Bahamas, shortly after the pair celebrated their two-year anniversary.

According to Page Six, Rodriguez apparently spent seven months looking for the right ring. “He knew for a long time that he wanted to propose to Jennifer,” a source said. “He wanted to get it right. The proposal has been a long time coming, Alex knew she was the one and has been painstakingly planning everything.” He reportedly sourced the stone outside the U.S.

Neither A.Rod nor J.Lo have revealed the jeweler who created the ring. Speculation as to its value and its weight has been non-stop since Saturday night, with some experts estimating it could be worth anywhere between $1 million to upwards of $5 million.

Speaking to another anonymous source, People reports that the proposal was “very much a surprise to Jennifer,” which was “just how Alex wanted it.”

“Jennifer is ecstatic and so are their families and friends,” the source said. You know who else was “ecstatic”? Most of Twitter.

Even A.Rod got in on the fun.

Congrats again to the lovebirds!

30 Best Engagement Rings for Every Bride

When it comes to fashion, anything goes—yes, there are trends that come up seasonally and Instagram rabbit holes that lead towards a mass yearning for certain “likeable” items, but the fun of it lies in celebrating your own unique sense of style. That’s as true in apparel as it is in jewelry, and as applicable to statement earrings as it is to engagement rings.

In 2018, brides-to-be gravitated towards alternative stone shapes and unique settings in their engagement rings. An anti-traditional approach to this once-super-traditional item has poured into 2019. Yes, classic diamonds will forever have a place in this market, but even the most timeless of engagement ring styles are subtly being revived and revisited, according to four industry pros: Katie Zimmerman, chief merchant officer at Blue Nile; Dayna Isom Johnson, trend expert at Etsy; and Jess Hannah Révész and Chelsea Nicholson, co-founders of the direct-to-consumer brand Ceremony.

“A lot of the trends we’re seeing aren’t necessarily new, they are an updated take on traditional style. The influence of the trends are a mix between customization options and modernization,” says Zimmerman. Shoppers are moving away from round diamonds, which have long been a favorite for brides-to-be, in favor of so-called “fancy-shaped diamonds” (which are cuts other than round), she explains—like oval, pear, emerald, cushion, and marquise: “Fancy shapes have been around for many years, but they are becoming a stronger trend than ever before. I’m seeing it heavy in engagement, rather it be as the single center stone or used in a three-stone setting to mix and match shapes.”

Isom Johnson describes 2019 as the year of “being real” with engagement rings, with brides exploring options that are more aligned with one’s personality than with what’s traditional. “For generations, the diamond has been the ultimate stone for proposing, but today’s bride isn’t tied to the norm,” she says. “Couples are moving away from cookie-cutter bling and opting for one-of-a-kind engagement ring styles instead, which can often come with a lower price tag than a traditional diamond ring.”

Hannah Révész agrees, adding that there’s a “general shift in values” when it comes to shopping for engagement rings, as shoppers become more conscious of ethics, sourcing, and recycled materials, as well as adopt a bigger “focus on design and less on having the biggest flashiest ring possible.” If you or your S.O. are procuring a ring in 2019, she says, it’s about “prioritizing good design, quality craftsmanship, and materials.”

This isn’t to say there aren’t certain stylistic elements that are sweeping the industry. According to these experts, some popular elements include vintage-inspired bezel settings and art-deco details; toi et moi (a French term for “you and me,” referring to two stones) and three-stone rings; and simple bands replacing a center-stone ring altogether. Should you pick out something that feels of-the-moment now and have your tastes change down the line, it’s all good—you can always re-set a stone: Zimmerman says to “[not] be afraid to try a trend because down the road you can trade up. The best thing about a natural diamond is it carries value. You can reset your diamond into a new setting or change the way it looks and feels on your finger with added bands.”

Whether you’re set on a fancy-cut solitaire, are drawn to the simplicity of a band, or simply want to go all-out maximalist with your engagement ring, check out 10 styles that will prevail in 2019.
