Designer Karl Lagerfeld: 'I'm Fed Up With #MeToo'

In a new interview with Numéro magazine, famed fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld—the man behind Chanel, Fendi, and his eponymous line—had some harsh words about the #MeToo movement.

“I’m fed up with it…What shocks me most in all of this are the starlets who have taken 20 years to remember what happened,” he said when asked about the topic. “Not to mention the fact there are no prosecution witnesses.” The 84-year-old German designer does, however, say that he “cannot stand” Harvey Weinstein.

As for whether or not #MeToo or Time’s Up have affected his work? That’s a hard no from Lagerfeld. “Absolutely not,” he says. “I read somewhere that now you must ask a model if she is comfortable with posing. It’s simply too much, from now on, as a designer, you can’t do anything. As for the accusations against the poor Karl Templar [creative director at Interview magazine], I don’t believe a single word of it. A girl complained he tried to pull her pants down and he is instantly excommunicated from a profession that up until then had venerated him. Its unbelievable. If you don’t want your pants pulled about, don’t become a model! Join a nunnery, there’ll always be a place for you in the convent. They’re recruiting even!”

Lagerfeld’s no stranger to making controversial statements. Last year, his allusion to the Holocaust when condemning chancellor Angela Merkel’s immigration policies on a French talk show sparked outrage, as did a cartoon he drew for a German newspaper, featuring Merkel and Adolf Hitler; before that, he built up quite a long history of body-shaming comments, as well as a feud with Meryl Streep.

His comments on #MeToo weren’t the only eye-raising things from his Numéro interview. On designers claiming they feel overworked, he said, “The worst thing about all of this, is that they try and blame me for their problems with working overtime. Azzedine [Alaïa], for example, before falling down the stairs, claimed that the supposedly unsustainable rhythms in fashion today were entirely my fault, which is absurd.” Before adding, about Alaïa, “I don’t criticise him, even if at the end of his career all he did was make ballet slippers for menopausal fashion victims.” When asked who between Virgil Abloh, Jacquemus, and Jonathan Anderson he’d take to a desert island, he responded, “I’d kill myself first.”

The interview concludes with this: “When I was young, my mother always said to me that I was stupid, she called me ‘Mule’. I’ve probably just been overcompensating ever since. And I’m not surrounded by idiots, I have fantastic teams. So, when it comes to the retarded and other ignoramuses, I don’t see them, I don’t know them…”

Celebrities Pay Tribute to Iconic Fashion Designer Azzedine Alaïa

The fashion world has lost one of its greats. Designer Azzedine Alaïa has died of heart failure in Paris at the age of 77, according to WWD. The Tunisian-born fashion designer was best known for his precise tailoring that fit the women he dressed like a second skin. So if you’ve ever spent a night out feeling amazing in a body-con dress, you have Alaïa to thank for that: The designer earned the nickname “The King of Cling,” turning the body-con dress into an ’80s fashion staple and helping to popularize the styles we still wear today.

His fitted evening dresses celebrated the female body, and celebrities like Naomi Campbell (who was so much a part of his inner circle she called him “Papa”), Madonna, Kim Kardashian, Michelle Obama, Victoria Beckham, Lady Gaga, and Miley Cyrus have all worn his creations. Alaïa was celebrated as a genius couturier, and he was often compared to a sculptor because of the way he could shape fabrics.

And of course, you might remember his name thanks to Alicia Silverstone as Cher Horowitz in Clueless. When Cher was asked to lay down on the dirty pavement while getting robbed in a parking lot, she protested, “You don’t understand, this is an Alaïa. It’s like a totally important designer.”

Alaïa’s prominence as a pioneer of fashion, marching to the beat of his own drum, was well known throughout the industry. He often worked at his own pace, according to Vogue, hosting intimate fashion shows in his Paris headquarters weeks after the official Fashion Week was over. This left an air of mystery surrounding his clothing, making it even more popular.

“If we talk about empowering women today, he did it, and he did it his way,” designer Alber Elbaz told WWD. “When women wear Alaïa, you see the woman and then you see Azzedine.”

After news broke on Saturday morning of his death, celebrities took to social media to pay tribute to the late designer.

Dolce & Gabbana Designer Makes Some Questionable Comments About Sexual Harassment

In light of sexual assault allegations made against powerful figures in Hollywood, major players in the fashion industry have come out to express support for survivors and, in some cases, share their own experiences of harassment and abuse while at work. Across the board, the industry has condemned this behavior—except, it seems, for Stefano Gabbana, one half of the creative team behind Dolce & Gabbana. In an interview with Vogue UK, the Italian designer characterized sexual harassment as “not violence”—and that was only the beginning.

When the conversation veered towards the recent wave of accusations made against people in positions of power (in this particular case, the topic was brought up in light of allegations about U.K. politician Mark Garnier), Gabbana said: “It’s not new! Luchino Visconti [the Italian director] asked Helmut Berger [the Austrian actor] and Alain Delon [the French actor] to go in the bed… But listen, you decide. It’s true. Everybody knows. After twenty years you say, ‘Ah! He touched my ass!’ It’s not violence, this.”

He continued: “Who doesn’t do sex? Who doesn’t? It’s a trend. Now the trend is sex. But sex is an old story. We are Italian. We came from the Roman Empire. We know very well.”

Gabbana went on to describe political correctness as “fake, because you don’t have the power to explain what you really think. With respect to everyone, I am not Mussolini. I am not God. It’s just my opinion. But I love when people say exactly what they think. If you don’t agree with another person, you still have the freedom to say what you think.” Early on in the conversation with Vogue UK, he described himself as “not politically correct” and Dolce as “more than me.”

The designer has never been one to hold his tongue. These comments are but the latest entry in a long list of inflammatory statements that have caused controversy. In 2015, the design duo suggested that marriage should only be for heterosexual couples, and that gay couples shouldn’t have “synthetic” children, referring to babies born from IVF; they apologized months after. More recently, Gabbana body-shamed, then apologized for body-shaming Lady Gaga during her 2017 Super Bowl performance. The brand has attracted criticism, too, for agreeing to dress First Lady Melania Trump—and responded to the backlash by staging a tongue-in-cheek “boycott” of Dolce & Gabbana.

Glamour has reached out to Dolce & Gabbana for comment, and will update this story when we receive a response.
