Glamour Is Taking the Pledge to Stay Home. We Hope You'll Join Us

A few weeks ago—maybe even a few days ago—being asked to stay home with not much to do but watch Netflix and cycle through your collection of sweatpants might have sounded pretty good. Fun, even. But that was then, and this now: A new reality we’re grappling with in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. The most frightening and frustrating part of this reality is that we’re being urged by lawmakers to remain inside our homes to limit contact with others, even those we love. The mandate isn’t in vain: Staying home is the single most important thing we can do to slow the spread of the Coronavirus and to protect those in our communities who are most vulnerable to it.

An exception to this rule is, of course, health workers, emergency-response personnel, grocery store employees, pharmacists, and others whose essential jobs we depend on. They must go out to perform life-saving tasks, and for that we should all be grateful.

They’re doing their part, and you can do yours: think positively. Be patient but upfront with your children. Read a book. Brainstorm ways to help your local businesses which might be struggling. Take this opportunity to reflect. There will be plenty of time to cheers with your friends in bars, ride the bus, linger over long dinners, and hit the beach for a much-deserved vacation. The future is bright, but the present is challenging.

The good news is that we’re all in this together, so the Glamour team is joining our colleagues at Vogue and taking the pledge to stay calm, to stay safe, and—if you can—to stay home. We hope you’ll do the same.

Share this post and caption it with a ? and your pledge to #StayHome.

The Crown Fans Can Stay at This Filming Location—Complete With Corgis and a Royal Butler

If you’ve ever dreamed of living like a member of the British royal family, now’s your chance.

Fans of both the real-life royals and the fictionalized ones on The Crown can now rent the massive home known as The Earl of Fitzroy—exterior shots of the residence were featured in the second season of the Netflix show. But, those who rent it won’t just be gaining access to the home; they’ll also gain access to an entire royal lifestyle too. But, fair warning, that lifestyle will cost you.

“We’ve been getting a bit overexcited about the release of The Crown’s third season,” Plum Guide, the rental company in charge of the listing, wrote in a blog post. “So, to celebrate we’ve created the ultimate experience of frivolity and excess worth over £50,000 in one of London’s most splendid homes.”

That “frivolity” includes access to a personal butler, a delicious banquet dinner, as well as a royal-worthy horse and carriage ride through Fitzrovia Square. Those who also shell out almost $65,000 for the luxury accommodation will also have afternoon tea surrounded by several regal corgis. And they won’t have to worry about picking up the wrong spoon as guests will also receive training (just like Meghan Markle reportedly did) from one of the world’s leading etiquette instructors, William Hanson. Guests will also reportedly be greeted with a box full of goodies from all the Queen’s favorite brands.

But if you want in on this action you better act fast since The Royal Experience at Earl of Fitzroy will only available in December. (Guests also must commit to a seven-night stay.) Hopefully, the house comes with its own Netflix account so guests can stream season three of The Crown while getting waited on hand and foot too.

You Can Now Stay at Casa Amor Villa From ‘Love Island,’ so Goodbye to All My Money

As my beloved Ovie might say, I’ve got a MESSAGE.

Islanders: Casa Amor is now available for a “Love Island Experience” package, which includes a luxurious seven-night stay at the satellite villa #CoupleGoals #StartGrafting.

Jokes aside, those familiar with the U.K. version of Love Island will recognize Casa Amor as the gorgeous property that sits adjacent to the reality series’ main villa in Mallorca, Spain. For the uninitiated, Casa Amor is introduced halfway through each Love Island season—this summer the female cast members were sent as a surprise…where they found a new group of hot guys ready to lure them away from their current partners. It shakes the show up in a big way. And, more important, gives us yet another stunning home to lust over.

The “Love Island Experience” package includes a seven-night stay for two adults in the real Casa Amor villa with a lot of romantic details: rose petals on the bed upon arrival, breakfast in bed every morning, a date night with dinner and wine, three personal training or yoga sessions, and a spa treatment. It’ll come at a cost though: The villa booking price starts at £5,503 per week (around $6,708), and it’s an additional £998 ($1,217) per couple for the Love Island experience.

How to Quit Your Job and Stay Friends With Your Boss

When I first moved to New York City, I worked in book publishing, where I assisted two lovely women (Michelle and Jen, hi!). As clichéd as it sounds, we became like a little family during my year at the company. Once, they took turns cradling me in their arms when I showed up violently hungover to our office Christmas party. (I was 22, and it was the holiday season—what can I say?) Our weekly check-ins became like mini therapy sessions. We even exchanged framed photos from The First Wives Club, our favorite movie, with our faces photoshopped over those of Bette Midler, Goldie Hawn, and Diane Keaton.

When I realized I was ready to move on from that job to pursue my dream of writing here at Glamour, I was a wreck about how to tell them—and petrified that leaving would break our bond. Before I quit, I spent a lot of time thinking about their communication styles and how I could make them feel valued. Gifts and notes were a big part of our relationships, so after I delivered the news face-to-face, I gave each of them a card. I peppered my note with anecdotes about the great times we’d had together, inside jokes, and how their mentorship had prepared me to take on my next role. Now they’re still my biggest cheerleaders. We have dinner at least every other month, they read all of my articles, and I stay just as caught up about their lives. It’s not always easy to let your boss know you’re ready to move on, but the very best ones will still be proud of you, as sad as they are to see you go.

We spoke to former employers and employees who still get happy hour drinks, share memes over DM, and go to one another for advice about how they were able to leave the nest, while still keeping their relationship intact.

Give Your Boss Their Due

“Before I became the editor-in-chief of Glamour, I was the head of social media and director of strategy at CNN. My boss was Meredith Artley, CNN’s editor-in-chief. We worked together for about three and a half years, and I don’t think I could be in this job right now if she hadn’t been my previous boss. When this opportunity at Glamour came up, I was actually really happy in my job—so it was surprising that I was leaving.

“When it came time to tell Meredith I was resigning, she was very excited for me. We both shed some tears, and we were mutually very excited as well as mutually upset that we were no longer going to be working together. But she saw it as a big move for me, because the best bosses are your biggest cheerleaders when you’re with them and when you go onto different, bigger, and better things. It was also really important to me to make sure Meredith knew I wouldn’t be getting this job without her. Don’t be shy about articulating how much this boss meant to you. If you’re leaving because your boss has helped you grow into a place where you can take this next job—like mine did—make sure you say that.

“If you want to remain friends with your boss, make sure it’s not just platitudes when you say you want to stay in touch. I reach out to Meredith all the time. I’m always chasing her for dinner and drinks, so don’t just say it—actually follow up. In my first few months at Glamour, I even went to Meredith for advice about some of the things I wanted to tackle in my new role. Make sure to keep them in your corner.” —Samantha Barry, editor-in-chief of Glamour

Be Real With Them

“I was a project manager at an agency in New Orleans for six months. I worked under the COO, and we were close. She was a great mentor, and I spent most of my days in her office working through problems. When I knew I wanted to leave, I had a conversation with her very early about what I was thinking about for my next step, and was honest that I was toying around with a few ideas. Although she didn’t want me to leave, she was able to give me great advice about following through on what’s best for me. She knew that I needed to spread my wings further and didn’t hold back on encouraging me to leave if I needed to. When I finally put in my resignation, she already knew it was coming. The conversation was mainly filled with advice and encouragement.

Here's Why Kate Middleton and Prince William Won't Stay With the Royal Family for Christmas

‘Tis the season to be merry—and to figure out where the heck you’re going to put everyone who’s coming to stay with you. As it is with us normals crowded in one-bedroom apartments, so it is with the royals in their castles, and this year, who’s staying with whom might not be what you’d expect.

In case you didn’t get the invite, Queen Elizabeth is hosting one of her famous royal Christmases (which have been compared to no less than “Downton Abbey on speed“) at her Sandringham estate in Norfolk, about two-and-a-quarter hours north-east of London. Apparently, although the manor is definitely the size you’d expect for the royal family, there are enough people staying in its 29 bedrooms that there’s no room to fit Kate Middleton and Prince William plus their three kids.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, however, will be staying at Sandringham—which is a pretty nice gesture for one’s first Royal Christmas as a full-fledged duchess.

It’s not the first time the Gen-X royals have decamped to Sandringham for Christmas, either: It’s something of a tradition. Last year, everyone gathered for Christmas church services in nearby King’s Lynn and subsequent celebrations back at the estate—and it looked like they had a holly jolly time indeed.

Because this news is coming amid rumors of royal strife between Markle and Middleton, some are quick to tie these sleeping arrangements to the duchesses’ divide—but let’s not make any hasty judgements just yet. After all, with the three junior royals Kate and Will have in tow now, a little extra space might be just the thing to keep the holiday stress down.
