Finally, Band Tees Are Cool Again

There are two kinds of concert-goers: Those who have the good sense to skip the merch table and those who insist on buying an overpriced T-shirt at every single show. I’m the latter, of course. How else will people know that I’m so cool I go out on weeknights sometimes? How else will they realize I have great taste in music and definitely, maybe heard about that band before they were big?

I still remember the rush of buying my first concert tee, way back in 2006 at a show featuring The Academy Is…, Panic! At the Disco, Acceptance, and Hellogoodbye. (A slightly embarrassing lineup to me now, but I was 16 and angsty about…things, I guess.) It was the first time my parents let me drive to a show in the city unsupervised. I was there with my best friend and my crush. This was LIVING, and I wanted to mark the life-changing milestone with a shirt. I picked one that had a purple monster on it because I was 16 and dumb. I think every concert tee since has been chasing that first high.

The point is: I have a lot of T-shirts and no savings. But that’s okay, because band tees are cool again! (The trend was declared “dead” in 2016, after Kendall Jenner was spotted at Coachella wearing a Megadeth shirt.) Thanks to the one-two (and three- and four-) punch of A Star Is Born, Bohemian Rhapsody, Vox Lux, and Rocketman this fall is all about wearing your musical tastes on your literal sleeve.

And there are so many options to wear your band love. Pick up a vintage find on Etsy, à la Lady Gaga (her character in A Star Is Born, Ally, wears a Yes tee), or go modern with a Beyoncé crop top. Either way, a Look Is Born.

How to Shop for Bridal Lingerie That Feels Cool, Not Corny

Bridal lingerie can be broken down into two categories: what you wear underneath your wedding day look, and what you change into afterwards.

“Brides are either looking for solution pieces to go under the dress, or for gorgeous sets for the honeymoon and time thereafter,” explains Lyn Lewis, CEO of Journelle. The handful of delicates worn before the festivities begin—silk robes, chemises, camis, and so forth—also fall into this category. The way you shop for each of these, though, can be quite different: “As gowns have become less structured, what one wears [underneath] is often nude, very simple, and shaping,” says Emily Bendell, founder of Bluebella, differentiating that from the “beautiful, ivory, and lacy” pieces some change into afterwards. “I tell brides to separate out in their minds their dream wedding dress and their dream wedding lingerie,” she adds, since usually “one [isn’t] worn with the other.”

“Bridal lingerie customers are usually very traditional—people really want romance and softness,” Helena Stuart of Only Hearts tells Glamour. When it comes to shopping for those special pieces, she applies the same philosophy she uses for everyday undergarments: “Comfort first.” Plus, if you’re into the idea of bridal lingerie, she recommends buying pieces to be worn over a few days, for a very clever reason—”most brides think only of their wedding night, but often newlyweds are too wiped out to really enjoy it.”

This particular type of lingerie isn’t one that’s necessarily touched by trends. According to Stuart, it’s “still very classic and traditional”—though, you’ll see designer play with silhouettes and fabrics. (“What I’m enjoying right now is an interest in simpler shapes, cut from quality materials,” she adds.) But that’s part of what makes it special, argues Sandra Rose, Head of Merchandising, Planning, and Product Development at Journelle: “What makes bridal lingerie so fun is that it’s not always subject to the broader trends taking hold in the intimates world. It’s all about finding something special for the bride-to-be; something that makes her feel her most beautiful on her special day.”

There has been some innovation in bridal lingerie design: Lewis believes it’s “getting more modern—we used to see mostly feminine cuts and silhouettes, and there are still many great options options of this ilk, [but] now there are also lingerie pieces in bridal white that are modern or more whimsical.”

Customers are looking for alternatives, too. “I feel that people are moving away from traditional silk styles [and] are looking something more fresh, contemporary that suits today’s modern woman,” notes Ela Onour of Else. “The fabrics are lighter, more comfortable, and the styles enhance natural shapes rather than being padded and heavy.” She highlights the rise of longline silhouettes and bodysuits over the traditional strapless bra as an example. The latter in particular is a good option for someone who wants to stray from textbook notions about bridal lingerie, and go for something you can wear in a variety of scenarios—Heidi Zak of ThirdLove suggests “[wearing] it with a skirt for the rehearsal dinner” or “[packing] it for the honeymoon,” since it’s “equal parts lingerie and layer.”

And it might not be a bad idea to think beyond your wedding itinerary while you’re shopping for these special pieces—in fact, Bendell encourages brides to think beyond the ceremony and honeymoon because, “if you’re treating yourself to beautiful lingerie, choose something you can wear again—[something] romantic and beautiful that doesn’t only scream ‘bride’.”

Leaving Netflix in July 2018: These Movies and TV Shows Are No Longer Cool for the Summer

If I had my way, I’d watch Hilary Duff’s seminal classic A Cinderella Story every day. And with Netflix, I had that possibility. The movie’s been available for streaming on Netflix for a while now, but the gravy train is about to end. That’s right: A Cinderella Story is leaving Netflix streaming at the end of July. This is more devastating than the time Sam’s evil stepmother (Jennifer Coolidge) forged a Princeton rejection letter and gave it to her. Remember that? And those weird, warm cookies she offered Sam as a consolation? What a monster! (But also: What a performance. Jennifer Coolidge is supremely underrated.)

Also monstrous is the fact that Bring It On—and its many, many sequels—is leaving streaming in July. What, is Netflix trying to erase all traces of my youth?! What am I going to watch now?

Best White Blouses and Tops for Spring 2018: Cool and Modern Designs for this Season

As far as “wardrobe staples” go, the white blouse feels incredibly familiar: Most people have one hanging in their closets, though it’s not always (okay, really, ever) the most exciting thing in there. It feels to plain or stuffy to be worn on its own, so you start packing on the accessories and the sweaters to embellish, pretty much until the shirt is out of sight. But the white blouse isn’t simply a handy layering piece—it’s one of the most underrated garments in your wardrobe. And this season, brands are giving shoppers more and more reasons to treat it like a statement piece: button-downs with ruffles and cutouts, elegant tops fashioned out of mixed fabrics, and other new riffs on a well-known category of clothing make it feel brand-new. You definitely don’t want to hide these under a sensible knit. Check out 23 revamped versions of the familiar white blouse that are anything but boring.

Lady Gaga's Braid at the 2018 Grammys Is So Cool It Hurts

Drawing the biggest names in the music world, the Grammys red carpet is basically a carnival of drama. No one does that better than Lady Gaga, and her 2018 Grammys look didn’t disappoint. Last year saw Gaga go dark with a rock and roll theme and PVC leather (complete with a fake tattoo for the occasion), but this year, the only thing that’s stayed constant is the color black and her love of spectacle. To top off her ornate black Armani Privé gown, Lady Gaga went with a look that’s all about contrast: black and pale makeup, platinum hair, and a braid that’s wrapped in a literal black corset.

Created by Gaga’s go-to hairstylist, Frederic Aspiras, her hair is nothing if not on theme. Aspiras pulled Gaga’s long, white-blond hair into two complex French braids on either side of her head, and then laced the sides together with black ribbon until they met on her braid’s tail. Corset braids (while certainly not new) have had a resurgence thanks to Instagram, and black ribbon is in the middle of a huge red carpet moment. Gaga’s version blends the two trends in a way that’s so cool it hurts.

As for the makeup, her artist Sarah Tanno went with a balmy pink Marc Jacobs lipstick (Cream & Sugar to be exact) and a shimmering lavender highlight to keep the vibe from veering too heavy. Gaga’s been experimenting with her aesthetic over the last few years, but this combination is a straight-up return to her Mother Monster days.

We’ll just go ahead and leave you with these photos. Enjoy! (As if you couldn’t…)

Barack Obama Gives Dancing Tips For Cool Dads Everywhere

Leave it to former President Barack Obama to make us nostalgic for bad dance moves. (Were times ever so simple?) The first preview for the upcoming Netflix show My Next Guest Needs No Introduction with David Letterman — on which Obama will appear as a guest— was just released, and people on the Internet are already obsessed with his return to television.

In a short clip from the episode, which debuts on January 12, Obama gives some tips for dads who are trying to bust a move and casually name drops Prince. “This was probably three or four months before he died,” the 44th president explains, referring to Prince like it’s the most casual moment ever. “And Prince asked Sasha to come up and dance, and she’s an excellent dancer. Then Sasha pulls me up, which surprises me because she always mocks my dance moves. I have dad moves,” he adds.

But, like everything else in life, the former president has a strategy for how not to embarrass your daughter in front of Prince. “I think the key is what we call ‘staying in the pocket.’ I think everyone here knows dads who get out of the pocket. And they’re trying stuff that they can’t really pull off…they start doing karate kicks and all that stuff.” Of course, the king of dad jokes also has great “dad moves.” Safe to say Obama is not a karate-kick kind of guy.

Letterman’s new talk show was announced earlier this month and will air monthly with a new guest on every episode. After Obama, George Clooney, Malala Yousafzai, Tina Fey, and Jay-Z are all scheduled to appear — clearly, the show really lives up to its title. The debut episode will be the first time 44 will appear on TV since he left office almost exactly one year ago. Just think: a whole hour of new Obama content awaits us all.
