Harvey Weinstein Indicted on Rape Charges by New York Grand Jury

On Wednesday, a Manhattan grand jury officially indicted Harvey Weinstein on charges of rape and criminal sexual act, according to the Associated Press.

“This indictment brings the defendant another step closer to accountability for the crimes of violence with which he is now charged,” Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance said in a statement. “Our office will try this case not in the press, but in a courtroom where it belongs.”

In the statement, Vance also thanked the “heroic survivors for their strength throughout this process” and thanked the New York City Police Department for its dedication to the case. The statement ended by urging any other potential victims to come forward with their allegations.

Weinstein did not testify in front of the grand jury on Wednesday. According to Weinstein’s lawyer Benjamin Brafman, he did not have adequate time to prepare his client for testimony.

“After being unfairly denied access to critical information about this case that was needed to defend him before the grand jury, Mr. Weinstein’s attorneys decided that there was not sufficient time to properly prepare Mr. Weinstein,” Brafman said in a statement. Brafman added that he felt an indictment was “inevitable” regardless of what his client may say on the stand due to “unfair political pressure.”

Weinstein turned himself in to authorities last week to face charges.

The disgraced Hollywood producer will now face the accusations brought by Lucia Evans, who says she met Weinstein in 2004. In October, Evans gave an in-depth interview to The New Yorker where she explained that during a one-on-one meeting with Weinstein, she was forced to perform oral sex on him.

“He’s a big guy. He overpowered me,” Evans said. “I just sort of gave up.”

Weinstein is currently out on $1 million bail and is required to wear an ankle bracelet as he awaits trial. To date, Weinstein has denied all allegations against him.

Harvey Weinstein Reportedly Set to Turn Himself in to Authorities on Sexual Assault Charges

Disgraced movie producer Harvey Weinstein is expected to surrender to authorities on Friday, following a lengthy investigation into the sexual assault accusations brought against him, according to reports.

Weinstein, The New York Times reported, is set to be charged by the Manhattan district attorney’s office. The Times further reported that Weinstein will face charges brought by at least one accuser. That person is Lucia Evans, who says she met Weinstein in 2004. Evans told The New Yorker in an in-depth review of Weinstein’s accusers that during a one-on-one meeting with the Hollywood producer, he forced her to perform oral sex on him.

“He’s a big guy. He overpowered me,” Evans told The New Yorker. “I just sort of gave up.”

Of Weinstein’s alleged process of harassing and assaulting women, Evans said, “It feels like a very streamlined process.” She added, “Female casting director, Harvey wants to meet. Everything was designed to make me feel comfortable before it happened. And then the shame in what happened was also designed to keep me quiet.”

According to The New York Times, prosecutors in Manhattan are still actively investigating allegations against Weinstein by actress Paz de la Huerta. She claims Weinstein raped her in her own home in New York City in 2010.

Since the fall of 2017, dozens of women have come forward to accuse Weinstein of misconduct, assault, and rape, including actresses Lena Headey, Gwyneth Paltrow, Angelina Jolie, Mira Sorvino and more. Ashley Judd was one of the first women to go on record with her report, sharing her story in detail with The New York Times in October. Judd told The Times that sometime in the 1990s, Weinstein invited her to the Peninsula Beverly Hills hotel under the guise of a breakfast meeting. However, when she arrived at his room, he was only wearing a bathrobe and asked the young actress if she could watch him shower or if he could give her a massage.

“I said no, a lot of ways, a lot of times, and he always came back at me with some new ask,” Judd said. “It was all this bargaining, this coercive bargaining.”

Weinstein has denied engaging in non-consensual sex with anyone, Reuters writes.

The Woman Who Accused Nelly of Rape Is Dropping Charges

PHOTO: Scott Dudelson/Getty Images

News broke last week that rapper Nelly had been accused of sexual assault by a woman with whom he’d allegedly returned to his tour bus after a concert in Seattle-area Washington. Now, the woman is dropping all charges and halting the resulting criminal investigation.

The alleged sexual assault took place early on the morning of Saturday, October 7 after a Friday-night concert at the White River amphitheater. Seattle-Tacoma Fox affiliate Q13 reported at the time that Nelly went into Seattle after the concert and brought the woman back to his bus.

After the alleged rape, Nelly’s lawyer told The Blast that the rapper was “the victim of a completely fabricated allegation,” adding that it was “motivated by greed and vindictiveness.”

On Friday afternoon (October 13), The Blast obtained a letter they report comes from the woman’s attorney. Her lawyer, Karen Koehler, says that her client reached out to the investigating police department and district attorney to halt the criminal investigation. Her client will also not testify any longer in criminal proceedings, the letter says.

According to the letter, Koehler’s client did not “feel safe enough to pursue criminal charges against a celebrity for an alleged rape.” Koehler writes that her client was immediately contacted by journalists as the news broke, subjected to smears from “the celebrity”‘s legal team alleging she was in it for the money, and, later, the detective in charge of investigating shared information pertaining to the case after promising Koehler’s client he wouldn’t.

“She wishes she had not called 911 because the [sic] she believes the system is going to fail her…She wants this to end,” Koehler writes.

She never wanted notoriety. She never wanted a dime from that man. She wants to go back to school and to graduate.”

The letter continues with a reference to Harvey Weinstein and the women who have come out against him: “One day, maybe our world will change and thirty women will not be needed to (eventually) speak out against a celebrity who has hurt them in order to be believed. But that day has not yet come.”

Nelly Has Reportedly Been Arrested on Charges of Sexual Assault

Nelly was reportedly arrested on charges of sexual assault early Saturday morning, according to Auburn, Washington police, who confirmed the arrest to The Blast. According to the site, a woman called the police department around 3:48 A.M., saying that she had been raped by the hip-hop star on his tour bus. (Nelly, who is touring with Florida Georgia Line, had performed at the nearby White River amphitheater on Friday night.) Seattle-Tacoma Fox affiliate Q13 reports that Nelly went into Seattle after the concert and brought the woman back with him to the bus, which was parked near a Wal-Mart Supercenter.

According to People, police who arrived found “probable cause” to arrest Nelly on charges of second-degree sexual assault, reportedly taking him into custody just after 4:30 A.M.. He was booked into the SCORE jail in Des Moines, Washington and released about three and a half hours later.

“Nelly is the victim of a completely fabricated allegation,” Nelly’s lawyer told The Blast. “Our initial investigation clearly establishes this allegation is devoid of credibility and is motivated by greed and vindictiveness. I am confident, once this scurrilous accusation is thoroughly investigated, there will be no charges. Nelly is prepared to address and pursue all legal avenues to redress any damage caused by this clearly false allegation.”

According to People, Nelly pled guilty to a misdemeanor possession of pot and possession of drug paraphernalia when police reportedly found both in his vehicle while the singer was on tour in Tennessee in April 2015.
